Yeah like baseball.

solarcane

What is baseball?

Coach Enos before any of them throw a pass in front of him.

You must be responsible and diligent and prepared and you must have your act together.

The message, he explained, was “setting the tone of what the standard is going to be, what I expect from them from an accountability standpoint on and off the field to be a championship quarterback and leader of this team.”

Seems like Williams was as big a clown as the rest of them but lower key.

Enos loves Martell says he is a leader of men

Go Canes!!

A six-pack of Canes notes on a Tuesday:

▪ When longtime recruiting guru Tom Lemming was in South Florida recently to watch Manny Diaz run his first junior day as UM’s head coach, one thought kept coming to mind:

“He is a young version of Dabo Swinney, Nick Saban and Urban Meyer,” Lemming said of perhaps the three most successful college football coaches of the 21st century.

Lemming, who has interacted with hundreds of college coaches in four decades evaluating high school talent, sees something special in Diaz.

“Manny is one of the best recruiters in the country,” Lemming said. “Miami will be a top 10 team next year [with their recruiting class]. Manny is enthusiastic, hard working and aggressive. Some coaches have golf as hobby. Manny will have recruiting as a hobby. He’s very personable, connects with the kids a lot better than most in his profession.”

As departing senior Sheldrick Redwine told NBC-6: “Players love [Diaz]; they all respect him.”

Lemming, incidentally, has high regard for Mark Richt but didn’t have the same regard for the entirety of the former UM staff — in terms of recruiting ability — as this one.

He believes this staff will be more effective landing top players.

▪ Lemming believes UM landed a gem in Belen Class of 2020 four-star running back Don Chaney Jr., who’s a non-binding Canes commitment.

“Chaney has been part of my all American team for freshmen, sophomores and juniors,” he said. “He’s muscular, gained a lot of weight since I first saw him. He can make an immediate impact for them [in 2020]. One of better running backs in the South.”

UM’s 2020 class is rated third by Rivals.

▪ In ESPN’s initial listing of its top 300 recruits for 2020, UM has commitments from the players who are 59th (Belen’s aforementioned Chaney Jr.), 91st (Doral Academy defensive end Samuel Anaele), 100th (Palm Beach Central receiver Bryan Robinson), 103rd (Hollywood Chaminade Madonna defensive tackle Willie Moise), 169th (Naples tight end Dominic Mammarelli), and 271st (Miami Southridge receiver Marcus Fleming).

So six of UM’s nine commitments are in ESPN’s top 300.

▪ Close associates of UM players say they love new strength and conditioning coach David Feeley, that he’s motivating and knowledgeable and that players are making gains in the weight room.

A bunch of players were frustrated with former strength and conditioning coach Gus Felder, with one noting that players would sometimes show up to work with Felder and he wasn’t there, or that the doors would be locked at certain hours, preventing former Canes players from using the facility.

▪ The Twitter account @PickSixPreviews had posted some fascinating stuff about what schools have produced the most draft picks at certain positions this century.

UM ranks first in tight ends drafted (12) and offensive linemen drafted (18, tied with Notre Dame and Wisconsin).

UM is sixth in defensive linemen drafted this century (19; LSU is first with 24) and seventh in linebackers (14; Ohio State is first with 19) and sixth in receivers with 13 (LSU is first with 18) and sixth in defensive backs with 21 (Ohio State was first with 28).

▪ Quick stuff: According to Canesport, UM is no longer in the mix for two-time All-ACC offensive guard Parker Braun, a grad transfer who is considering Texas, UF and Ohio State.... UM’s basketball game at Duke at 4 p.m. Saturday will be a full national telecast on CBS, with Spero Dedes and Clark Kellogg on the call. Miami plays at Wake Forest on

The Florida Gators versus Miami Hurricanes 2019 season opener could be moved up a week to Aug. 24, a source told the Orlando Sentinel.

The game is slated for Aug. 31 at Orlando’s Camping World Stadium, but the date change would better showcase the first matchup between the long-standing rivals since 2013. It also would mark the earliest start to the football season for either school.

Before the move can happen, however, the NCAA would have to approve it. A decision is expected soon.
Soup may get it all:

The game will pit UF second-year coach Dan Mullen against former assistant coach Manny Diaz.

Diaz, who will be in his first season replacing Mark Richt, was Mullen’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Mississippi State in 2010 and again in 2015.

This will be the first meeting between UF and UM in six years, when the Hurricanes edged the Gators 21-16 in South Florida.

UF had won the longtime rivals’ previous meeting, in 2008, to snap a six-game losing streak in a series that began in 1938. The Hurricanes lead the series with a 29-26 record.

The date change will move the game from Labor Day weekend, when most college football teams open their seasons.

UF has opened the season on Aug. 30 three times, most recently in 2014 at home against Idaho — a game eventually canceled by severe weather.

Miami’s earliest start was on Aug. 27, 1984, as defending national champions against Auburn. The Hurricanes defeated the Tigers 20-18 in East Rutherford, N.J.

Terrance Sullivan

Ha GC that would definitely seal me not coming for real and just stay at home and watch on TV considering I am going to The @UNC Game and all Home Games. So as it looks now I will Go to @UNC all Home Games and @Duke so 8 Games works for me. If they make those changes I can cancel all Hotel reservations except a couple for those that are going to the Game and we can do our Canespace Fall Weekend Reunion for VT weekend.

IF we beat UF in August by the score of 34-13, on what ever date they decide to play (LOL), then we will be crowned instant champions of the college football world. From then on we will never lose our grasp on the reigns of college football championships from then until enternity or everybody be damned.

And so it was written on this date 2019 Feb 28.

Herbieibis

The Herb says this: Manny is doing a great job so far BUT if the product on the field is trash, it's going to be the same d thing on the recruiting front. There are still a lot of nay Sayer recruits in Florida that are non believers, by the what I've seen so far. We can't get them all but ultimately, in order to help them make their mind up we have bust Florida's azz in the opener.

86Cane

The next Urban, Dabo and Saban.

ere is where things stand on a potential date change for the UM-UF football opener
BY BARRY JACKSON AND SUSAN MILLER DEGNAN

ESPN and an organization celebrating the 150th year of college football are trying to persuade the NCAA to move the University of Miami’s opener against the Florida Gators in Orlando from Aug. 31 to Aug. 24, and a decision is pending.

The NCAA is considering the request, and ESPN and the two schools hope to get an answer quickly, though the NCAA hasn’t told the parties when a decision will be announced. The NCAA must approve it because it would require moving up the date that the two schools are permitted to begin practice.

If the game is moved to Aug. 24, it would be on ABC or ESPN in prime time. UM says it was told the game will be in prime time if it remains Aug. 31.

“It’s the 150th year of college football and they [an organization called CFP 150] along with ESPN are looking to have a marquee matchup to open up the year,” UM athletic director Blake James said by phone early Thursday morning, declining to say whether it’s something that UM and UF would like to see happen or the likelihood of it happening.

Asked about potential issues for fans who have purchased tickets or made travel plans, James said: “If this were something that were to happen, a lot of things have to be figured out. Those are issues.”

UM released this statement at midday Thursday: “This past December, Miami, Florida and Florida Citrus Sports were approached by ESPN, who had the College Football 150th organization’s support (the entity overseeing the upcoming season-long celebration), to explore interest in moving the Camping World Kickoff game in Orlando to August 24 as part of a special kick off day celebrating the sports 150th anniversary season.

“This is a unique and rare opportunity that would showcase college football, both storied programs, and the state of Florida. In January, a waiver was submitted to the NCAA seeking approval to move the game under this premise. Both schools, along with ESPN, College Football 150th Anniversary organization and Florida Citrus Sports, understand that fans, and the teams themselves, need time to make necessary arrangements should the waiver be granted. A decision is anticipated shortly.”

Kevin Weiberg, executive director of the College Football 150th Anniversary organization, also known as CFB150, told the Miami Herald on Thursday that UM and UF submitted the waiver request “jointly.’’

“We always knew that if there was going to be another game moved to August 24 that it would require approval by the NCAA through a waiver process because the season is already 14 weeks in length, Weiberg said. “When ESPN informed us they were looking to do something like that, we just thought it would be a terrific promotion for the start of the college football season with a focus on the 150th anniversary.

“The addition of a high-profile FBS game just provides a terrific launch to the anniversary season.’’

Two other college football games are being played on Aug. 24: Samford vs. Youngstown State in the 2019 Guardian Credit Union FCS Kickoff in Montgomery, Alabama; and Arizona at Hawaii — both FBS schools.

ESPN believes UM-UF would be ideal for Aug. 24 because of the historical significance of the matchup and the tradition of the schools and because the schools are close geographically and would make it logistically easier to move.

It’s also a game that was arranged by ESPN, which made it a logical game to request to move to Aug. 24. ESPN wants to surround the game with CFP 150 programming.

If the change is granted, UM would have a week off before its Sept. 7 game at North Carolina. UF would have a week off before playing host to Tennessee Martin on Sept. 7.

CFB150, an organization formed to “celebrate 150 years of college football’‘ in 2019, per its website, has partnered with the College Football Playoff “to celebrate the good in the game.’‘

A video trailer that highlighted the partnership was released at the recent CFP National Championship game between Alabama and eventual winner Clemson.

“College football has shaped our lives for 150 years,’‘ the video begins. “It has provided educational opportunity, It has developed future leaders. It has impacted communities....Through 2019, we invite you to join a year-long celebration at CFB150.org and @CFB150. The College Football Playoff and College Football 150th anniversary, partners in celebrating the good of the game.’‘

SPRING FOOTBALL UPDATE

James told The Miami Herald that UM hopes to have three scrimmages during spring football, with one in Miami-Dade, one likely in Orlando and one in a city to be determined. The Miami and Orlando scrimmages are expected to be open to the public, and the third might be, as well.

He said it’s possible that none of them will be designated as a spring game.

Hard Rock Stadium is unavailable for UM’s spring game because of a concert.

Is that date gonna put us at a disadvantage?
You would think when installing a new offense every week would be helpful....

I read that part of the request to the NCAA would be to start Fall practices a week early. Starting early would also give the Canes an extra bye week.
