We need to make a statement right out of the gate by busting up the Crocs. This should set the tone for the 19 season. Can't come out and lay another egg.

If we lay the boom on Florida, there is no doubt we run the table. We will probably lose against Clemson in the ACC championship, but if we keep it real close, we might get a spot in the playoffs!

thirstybuzzardcane

It doesn't matter who our QB will be, our offense will be 10x better with Enos as OC!

From what I am reading and hearing, it appears that the new Canes offensive coaches are recruiting at a whole new level than CMR did. The Canes are recruiting good players at every position, QBs, OLs, RBs, TEs and WRs. They really seem to know the coaches and have identified good players at all the positions. I really like the group of commits for 2020 and 2021. If the Canes can keep them, and continue to get others of the same caliber, the Canes will be competing for national championships soon.

Dear friends, glad to say I can open that way.

I received some news tonight that I cannot call good. My Mother, Katherine, is almost 90. She broke her hip the first part of November, then while in rehab she had a serious stroke.Since my Dad passed in 2010, she has had some health issues, but normal at first. About 2 years ago, due to her family history of diabetes, she started dialysis 3x per week. With the stroke and her age, the dialysis has been cut back severely. She has a sore on her back that has gotten into her spine...if it was a limb, they would amputate, but location of it certainly does not allow the procedure.
They are stopping the dialysis as she almost died yesterday from the stress of it. We are bringing in hospice, keeping her comfortable. She has a week to 2 weeks most.
She is my mom, my best friend my hero. She raised me right in all ways; my failures are mine. She has a MA from William & Mary...smartest person I have even known....because of her love of others and an open mind. She taught me to drive, she saw every sandlot, HS, college game I played in...with all the athletes in our family, she knows about sports, teams, rules as much as anyone. Everything I accomplish or do well is from my parents; my failures, which are many...are mine.
This is difficult....perhaps more than when my Dad passed. I love her so much, but it is her time to shine. I want her to live and soar forever ....and she will friends. Death is part of life...it is going to happen. She is just existing, not living. I want her to be happy like she was when I was a kid. I want her to be with my Dad...they were married 62 years. It is not an easy time, but I know it is time for her to enjoy eternal life. Who am I to be selfish and want her to stay here like that? That would be so s3elfish....and that will never be me. Besides....she was fitted for her wings long ago.
Thank each of you for giving me an outlet to share with you. This is what CS is about...family!
There is nothing like CS; never will be.
Thank you friends,
VA

VA My prayers are with you my friend.
I lost my mother in law just a couple months ago, the dearest kindest soul I have ever known.

Your mom will obtain her greatest gift from her Savior and be united with your dad for eternity, there is no gift greater than that.

She knows when her work here on earth is finished, she knows you will carry on and make her proud.

Peace of the Lord be with you through these difficult times.

VA Cane

I am going down Thursday morning....my Dads birthday he would have been 90....be with her, chat....make her laugh. There are no real worries...everything is planned and in place.
I am at peace with it, and there is no anger or blame...its life. She has had a great life....my dad and her were incredible...they really lived a grand life. Its been hard since 2010 when he passed. They are each other....i always said Mom and Dad...they will always be one. She is not in pain, or anxious....its just time. I fully believe in The Almighty; he has what is best for her. I have learned so much from her; all I do i got from them. when my Pop came to speak to my teams...she came too. All I know is from them. I am good with her flight, and I am glad i have you all for support. It means alot.

We who have lost a parent can understand how difficult what you are going through is.

Be strong, VA.

We are with you in spirit that you can make it through any outcome in this situation for the better.

Go Canes!!

A six-pack of Hurricanes notes on a Tuesday night:

▪ UM coach Manny Diaz told WQAM’s Joe Zagacki and Don Bailey Jr., on Hurricane Hotline this week that more than 60 players are showing up to involuntary workouts and staying after work is completed.

“We’ve made this a place where our guys want to be again,” he said. “If they do it out of obligation, you’re not going to get this extra bit out of them....

“We want an extraordinary standard of living. We want to be the envy of college football. [For the players], we want all their friends to be jealous they’re not Miami Hurricanes. I want every other coach in the country to wish they could coach on this staff at the University of Miami.”

Diaz said “hiring David Feeley as our strength and conditioning coach has done more to change our culture than anything.”

▪ Diaz already has made one position switch on his roster.

Cornerback Gilbert Frierson, who redshirted last season as a freshman, said he has been moved to the striker position. Frierson likely will compete with Derrick Smith Jr. to back up Romeo Finley.

Frierson’s move to striker leaves UM with six scholarship cornerbacks: Trajan Bandy, D.J. Ivey, Al Blades Jr., Nigel Bethel and freshmen Christian Williams and Te’Cory Couch.

Finley, playing the new striker position, was targeted 15 times and allowed only five completions for 61 yards this past season, with two interceptions and no touchdowns yielded, according to Miami Herald correspondent Daniel Gould. And what’s more, Pro Football Focus said Finley never missed a tackle all season.

But Smith allowed five receptions on six targets for 62 yards.

Frierson appeared in one game and allowed two completions in three targets for 49 yards and a touchdown pass.

▪ Diaz said “if we had signed all high school kids, we would have had a miniscule recruiting class a year from now.” Plus, signing more than a handful of transfers filled immediate needs.

Incidentally, Diaz is now following linebacker Rahyme Johnson on Twitter; Johnson announced last week’s he’s transferring from UCLA. He was a four-star recruit out of a Los Angeles high school - Rivals’ 20th-best outside linebacker in 2017 - but had only five tackles in three games over two seasons.

Diaz didn’t address last Friday’s dismissal of three recruiting officials – including player personnel director Matt Doherty – in the taped WQAM interview but said: “We have to win in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach. We have to do a better job than we did this past year. But all the great Miami teams were always supplemented by great players from [elsewhere].”

This UM class had one player from Miami-Dade (fewest for a Canes class this century), three from Broward and none from Palm Beach.

▪ UM ultimately decided to take only one tight end in this case (Larry Hodges) and new tight ends coach Stephen Field said he’s “confident in what we have” on the roster right now at tight end.

Field likes what he has with Brevin Jordan, Will Mallory, Michael Irvin and Brian Polendey, with Hodges now joining that group.

He said he met with Irvin and he’s “working his butt off.”

Field said: “I want to deliver on the guys we already have here in my position group, making sure they’re holding up the standard of Tight End U because we have the best tight end standard in the whole world. I want to make sure the former tight ends that played here, had that standard, that we do the same thing on the field.

“Obviously they had some success this year. I told them I don’t want to just be good, I want to take good, turn it to great, take great and turn it to elite. And that’s what is going to take us to the level we need to be. The University of Miami can be an elite program that people fear to play every week, and that’s where we want to take the program.”

▪ On his plans for UM’s offense, new coordinator Dan Enos reiterated to NBC 6’s Chris Fischer that he will use shifts and motions and “change tempos on people” – with some huddling and some no-huddle.

“We have to build a foundation and then figure out what our players do well and then figure out a way for them to be successful,” Enos said. “That’s what good coaches do.”

Of the Enos hiring, Diaz told WQAM: “Bringing in Dan Enos is a major step in that direction. He’s a guy multiple SEC teams tried to hire to be their offensive coordinator a year ago. And Alabama wanted him to stay. To [go to] work for a first year head coach was a massive statement of how strong this brand is.”

The goal now, Diaz said, is “get the offense rolling and the quarterback position [back on track]. If miami’s quarterbacks play great, Miami plays for championships in January.”

▪ Quick stuff: Jiimmy Johnson visited with UM coaches on Tuesday night... Running back Lorenzo Lingard is ahead of schedule after knee surgery and should be ready for the start of the 2019 season…. Former UM players on Alliance of American Football rosters: linebacker Tyriq McCord (Atlanta); defensive tackle Anthony Moten and cornerback Ladarius Gunter (Orlando,... Cincinnati signed Brad Kaaya after he was cut by the Colts.

Posted by: Joe | February 13, 2019 at 01:27 PM

Absolutely we are!! I think we're the favorites!

VA Cane

Interesting portal a lot of guys available....I do not think, I know....every one of these kids should be immediately available to play as long as the grades are at least a C. If lower sit a year and get to 2.0. If a guy transfers then he cannot transfer again unless sitting a year. I think that would be fair. I also think we need to stress GPA....if you are not at a 2.0 gpa...probaly should not be playing.

Joe

I have a feeling that the NCAA will do something to change the transfer rule after this crazy offseason.

VA Cane

Thanks CGNC and TSully....I appreciate it very much. I am very much at peace with it; Serenity Prayer is for many moments. She will be fine and is resting. I know she will be with my dad her parents and relatives and will be happy forever!
She always expects all 3 of us children to give it our best. She would be very disappointed in us if we were falling apart; my brother and sister struggle with death. I am here for them; I know what she expects.
I have learned so much from her in 60 years; even when my Dad was gone; until her dialysis treatments she came and spoke to my teams...because her and Dad did it forever she kept doing it. She was so eloquent and my kids love her. She told them that sports were important and great....that they were so big for my Dad, uncle, godfather, brother and sister...but life family and school came first..where you think I got that?....and she loved telling them no matter how tough I seemed, I had a soft heart and loved them! Have heard from a lot of my guys...guys who were kids when I started 40 years ago who knew her to my new guys.
Sports are more than a game for some; they have been special for our family and we always have been proud of all we have done.
I have an incredible family here; thank you all for your support...makes a big difference!

VA Cane

Joe I think they should; coaches leave these kids like it is nothing. I have moved twice when I physically moved...i hated it. They are older, but still they are kids. Yes they have to deal with it.
Lets be fair; if a guy wants to leave, he should be able to do so. He should be able to play immediately...I think he needs a 2.0 GPA for immediate play...that shows me he is there for school as well as sports. Most likely he will not be a pro...few really are...but get the degree or at least show you are working...thats why you are there.
If less that 2.0 GPA...he can transfer, but sit a year...work on the grades and keep the eligibility.

If a guy transfers...then transfers again after that year...then sit a year regardless of GPA.

I want kids to have freedom, but somewhere there has to be a tie to school grades responsibility accountability...just cause you go to Bama Clemson OK OSU PSU ND MI...UM...does not mean grades dont matter. Thats why you go to school.

Both my HS and college kids last year had a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.....n9ot all...but nobody was failing out or restricted....thats my greatest accomplishment....so many of my guys getting an education!

Harry Miller

VA cane bless you and all your family. Just think
when your Mom opens her eyes she will be in Heaven with Jesus and smiling down at you.

TruCane81

The transfer deal is easy to make fair for all parties.

The elite programs should not be allowed to use the all America and all conference teams for cherry picking the nations best players, so no “ free agency”.

The rule should be similar to the redshirt rule but slightly adjusted.

If you allow unrestricted transfers based games played, coaches will just throw players on the field for meaningless snaps to violate the spirit of the rule.

All teams should record all snaps for all players. Once a threshold for snaps in a season is established, any player under that threshold should be allowed mostly unrestricted transfers with MAYBE an option for the school to deny based on conference and rivals.

This allows players to not get their pro prospects destroyed by being buried on the bench of a loaded roster or a vengeful coach putting them in the doghouse..

Imo once a kid has been redshirted he should be able to transfer without sitting.

They shouldn’t be forced to sit two years. If after a reshirt a kid isn’t happy or isn’t good enough, he shouldn’t have to give up another season.

thirstybuzzardcane

The only problem I have with JJ comment about Diaz, he said the same thing about Golden!

DallasTX Cane

Gotta understand JJ is doing the school a solid by lending his legitimacy and publicity to the new regime. Same as he did when Goldie was hired. Posted by: HillviewCane | February 13, 2019 at 06:19 AM

No, but our win over Florida at the end of August will boost us up. Running through the ACC will get us into the Top 5 by year's end. An upset of Clemson gets us into the Top 3.

TonyCane

Those are some good ideas.

One thing I saw last week was Jim Mora talking about how UCLA will not benefit from the Portal. Apparently it is extremely difficult - if not impossible - for players to transfer to UCLA per school requirements. So for schools in that predicament, when they lose players they have no way of replenishing except through high school signings.

If UCLA continues to have high attrition, it will be as if they were under NCAA sanction.

I was blessed with a call from Sarasota Cane today. He called to ask about my mom how she was and that she was in his prayers. We talked for about 45 minutes. We talked about my Mom , music, a little politics, and of course The Canes!!!

This meant so much to me; he is such a kind person who really cares. It makes things so much easier knowing you have such wonderful family!I cannot thank him enough, along with the rest of you for your kindness. You are all my family and I will never forget how wonderful you all are...you all are special.
Thank you so much,
VA

VA,
Sorry to hear about your MA.
Lost both if my parents 4.5 months apart in 2004. It sucks so badly but u have the spacers, so if u need us we are here. My sister is in the hospital as of this moment. She has COPD BAD, plus a recently diagnosis of lung cancer. We don't know how bad yet but they collapsed her lung doing the test. I'd appreciate all your prayers.
I love this blog and even though I have met no one on here, it feels like I've know most of u all my life.
Had to turn down a coaching gig because of my dam knee but but at 61 that's part of being an old ass former athlete or as I call it a USTA.
