Squaring off against third-ranked Virginia Saturday afternoon at John Paul Jones Arena, the University of Miami men's basketball team posted one of its best defensive efforts of the season, but it was not enough to take down the Cavaliers in a 56-46 defeat.
The Hurricanes (9-12, 1-8 ACC) were led offensively by Chris Lykes (16 points), while the sophomore guard was joined in double figures by redshirt sophomore forward Sam Waardenburg (10 points) and redshirt senior Zach Johnson (10 points). Senior centerEbuka Izundu finished just shy of a double-double, closing out the afternoon with eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds. As a unit, Miami only turned the ball over a season-tying low seven times, while forcing Virginia to cough the ball up 14 times.
In a defensive clash, the Canes limited the Cavaliers to 42.3 percent (22-of-52) shooting from the field and 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from beyond the arc, while Miami shot 17-of-50 (34 percent) overall and just 4-of-21 (19.0 percent) from 3-point territory. The Cavaliers took advantage on the glass, out-rebounding Miami, 42-24.
Virginia (20-1, 8-1) was led by a trio in double figures, including De'Andre Hunter (14 points), Mamadi Diakite (11 points) and Kyle Guy (10 points).
With Miami trailing by five following the opening 5:46 of action, Waardenburg led the Canes on a personal 7-0 run over the next 3:06 of play, as Miami jumped in front, 11-9. However, Virginia countered with a 9-0 run of its own before entering the locker room maintaining a seven-point lead, 28-21, a lead it would not look back on.
The Hurricanes will return to action on Wednesday when they welcome Notre Dame to the Watsco Center at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
Boom bam bam....
Damn shame we did not jump on KD....great college QB...great leader was surrounded by greats but I love the guy as a player and leader.....I really think he would be a great influence.
NFL pays more...but Buffalo? Cold cold cold....and they suck bad.....nice town JK12 loves it....but they have been so bad for so long...like my Raiders...Oakland is a terrible place....and we suck bad too......

This SB Pro Football stuff is trying....give me CFB all day!
Those stupid NO fans suing to replay the game.....idiots. Missed call bad no call bad...but life and football. They still had chances and failed....no need to add more replay for those calls....pretty soon games will take days to play as every play will need 20 minute review....no!
This SB music stuff....don't have a clue what these people sing....I just don't follow them...but at least the guy for Maroon 5 said he was not a politician and not there to be political.... to me. Second I am tired of this Kap kneeling stuff....Kap was pretty good when he played....but the owners don't want the hassle of his baggage.....he can go political all he wants when away from the game....but if you work for me you leave that at the door...you are here to play not preach politics.....last politics I heard was the 535 jerkoffs in DC and the Azzclown named Rump (cause he is an ass....so is a rump) in the WH....paid themselves, just gave themselves a 10k raise and let REAL Americans suffer in a shutdown over issues that can be solved....
I have no empathy for Kap he made his bed...good player but brought the issues on himself....play ball on the field fool, go all out away from the game that's cool.....

Posted by: raizecane | February 02, 2019 at 12:21 PM
Great point! The Canes need to recruit ballers, not star ratings! CMD and his defensive staff have done a great job with the defense. Pinkney, Shaq, Jaquan, Redwine, MJack, Jackson, Garvin, Rousseau, Harvey and other three star ballers will eventually be NFL starters. Jess Simpson can flat-out Coach. Now it’s time for Enos and the offense to step it up

Posted by: raizecane | February 02, 2019 at 11:29 PM
The Herb says this about stars, better believe they matter. U look at the perrenials in the college play-offs and they ain't loaded with a bunch of 3 star starters.
Three means a C. Making C's on a test are average, same with a player. 3 stars doesn't mean they are not good but to me they are not consistent. Would u want a 5 star 5 Willis or A three 3 star Norton if u had your pick. Norton was good but not in the same category as Willis.
Comparing the NFL to College is about like comparing High School to college.
There are a lot of gems that weren't big names coming out of college that have gone on to greatness. Chalk it up to to better coaching, desire and taking advantage of the situation. Years ago that argument of stars don't matter held weight but not in this day and time.
How many 3 stars did Bama start? How many did Clemson start? Clemson has a few that started.
U who believe it don't matter it don't matter and see what it keeps getting us.
Posted by: Herbieibis | February 03, 2019 at 12:14 AM
Jim Kelly, Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, Warren Sapp, etc. The list of under-the-radar, chip-on-the-shoulder recruits who became Cane legends is too long to count. They were the foundation of the great Canes teams. I don’t recall any Canes legends in the NFL HOF who were five star recruits. Like most fans, I love five star players when we get them, but IMHO, the Canes simply don’t have enough bag men to consistently win those recruiting wars for the five stars. It’s an unfortunate and brutal reality.
If the Canes recruiting strategy is to get more five stars than Georgia, Clemson and Alabama, then the Canes will likely fail every year. If the Canes strategy is to recruit the right players, regardless of star rankings, and develop them into elite performers in the right systems, then the Canes will win games and produce more HOF players.

Posted by: nemo2002 | February 03, 2019 at 08:12 AM
All the fatso era ganes garbage players the usual slurp squad on the blob bent over for were legit zero star recruits.
One star is considered a prospect that usually isn't even evaluated by a subscription selling service and is reserved for everybody who falls in that category or they project as someone who will never be a contributor at the college level.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | February 03, 2019 at 09:59 AM
I would rather have a 3* Aaron Donald over a 5* whoever.
24 out of 44 starters in the Super Bowl were 3* or less.
It's about talent evaluation. If half of a class is 4 & 5* and the other half is properly evaluated 3* or less. You will dominate...

Hmmm. Perhaps we ought to recruit as many 0* QBs as possible in the hopes that one day we hit on that one-in-a-million recruit who may develop (years later) into a top-rated NFL QB?

Posted by: CoCane | February 03, 2019 at 10:27 AM
Yes, definitely!
Unfortunately, however, it's not so easy these days to "properly" evaluate lower-than-3* recruits. It's a crap shoot. Indeed, you may have better odds winning in craps than you have developing "low star" and "no star" recruits into winning college football players.
Posted by: nemo2002 | February 03, 2019 at 10:54 AM
That was just 1 example. There are many others. Ignoring the point to be sarcastic won't increase your intelligence. Sorry...
When more then half of the entire NFL were 3* or less coming out of high school, you better be able to locate 1*, 2*, 3* gems if you can't throw unlimited bags to the 4* & 5*.

Posted by: CoCane | February 03, 2019 at 11:12 AM
It has to be a combination of both.
You do need some elite, can't miss guys on your roster, but you also need a coaching staff that can max out the abilitites of guys once they get on campus.
Just read has FIFTY ONE players on it's roster from North and South Carolina only.
Those states have talent for sure, but if I had to guess Florida is probably churning out more than those two combined.
Someone at Clemson is doing a hell of a coaching job on all those kids, a bunch of which aren't five star guys.
We need to get to the point where our roster is full of talented, hungry 3 and 4 star players who most importantly want to be Canes.
Then and only then can a true difference maker like DeShaun Watson, Tua or Trevor Lawrence put us over the top.
Imo guys like Banda, Simpson and Rumph are doing a phenomenal job developing guys once they get here. Just need that same development on the offensive side of the ball and we will get where we want to be.

💯. I also agreed with CoCane that a mix of the “right” 4-5 stars, with the “right 3 stars is a perfect recipe for success in Miami

Big windy
You’re confusing college with nfl - no comparison
Go Canes - you get it! You need coaches who can coach up the 3 stars but the talent level of high 4 stars and 5 stars is undoubtedly out there.
Also, stop with the Ed reed, Ray Lewis etc were 2 or 3 stars- that was years ago and the film and review and expertise of the last 5 or so years is way better and more detailed.
We need a good combo as Go said, but we must keep some of the south Florida super athletes HOME

Actually, it looks like Taggart was able to retrieve Blackman from The Portal.
Couple of questions:
1) The NCAA handed down a one year postseason ban to Missouri. That means that any seniors can transfer without penalty. Any chance that Kelly Bryant leaves?
2) Have we actually recruited anyone for the basketball team over the last two years, or was all of the new talent transfers? I cant find anything about who Miami signed in 2018.
Posted by: TonyCane | February 03, 2019 at 02:31 PM

We ain't the NFL. Now if u want to brag about being a farm club for the NFL, that's wonderous. U put Tom Brady with any other team coming from college, we wouldn't be talking about him now.
We on here have moaned and groaned for 17 years about the state of this team. I will finish by saying be satisfied with a bunch of 3 stars over more highly rated Ayers. That's what the ACC is, is a bunch of average teams, with average talent, who will rise up every so often and win 9-10 games a couple years and then sink back into being average or below. Check UNC out. I think Dabo and Clemson have figured out the way to go and the way to stay.

One thing about recruit rating now is
everyone knows a great deal more about every available player because of social media saturation.
If every person on here was truthful I doubt anyone really knew much about Kenny Dorsey until he ambled out on the field in that big ass white sweatshirt and terrorized other teams.

I don't know how we are going to finish high school wise but we should get Hill and Phillips thru the waiver wire. We should then have 4 or 5 ships left. Stars are a ranking system for HS players, not a 5 year, 100k warranty.
If ER and RL were low stars, they sure ended up good. Ending up in the HOF does not mean they over achieved, but that people who did not recruit them did not see the hidden talent and ability, the willingness to learn and be coached....and fundamental skills.
Stars can be deceiving. A guy may come out as a 5 star, say J12....but when they get to college, their physical limitations, game intelligence, fundamentals, willingness to learn and be coached prior coaching, and current coaching may limit their ceiling. Jacory, while a nice kid, was not an elite QB at all. He had some skills and fundamentals but not enough to be elite. His UM coaches....not good....the players around him...the same....some skills but not elite. Those teams were average as individuals and as a group...players and coaches.
An ER, who people judged lower, had hidden talent, was taught new skills, honed his fundamentals to expertise, had really good coaches, competed and played with other extremely talented players which rubs off, and went to a school with highly competitive program.
ER was a good player who became a great player via hard work great coaching, competing and playing with greats, strong fundamentals, in a great program....he got better.
There are 5 stars who do have it and you know they will go far....others come in lower rated and they develop into 5 stars at the college level.
Hard to judge them as they go to the NFL as it is the elite of all.....a whole different concept....it becomes a job....$...but the ideas is similar....perhaps a little easier to judge or rate...but still....
Tebow, Manziel, Dorsey....acclaimed in college...not successful pros. TB12.....last pick in draft....as good as it gets.....Jerry Rice.....pretty good...Hersch Walker....cant miss....average career....
You never know on all of them....at both levels...

Two things I took note of from SB....that have always been in my game.
since I started playing at 7, whomever I played for stressed heavily that "if you win the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, you will have a very strong chance of winning". Its just a fact; you got to rule the trenches. The Pats did a great job of blocking; 154 yds on the ground. They pressured Goff all day. Pats did not convert 3rd downs well....but they shut the Rams down on O. They ran and passed enough, played D...and won. They controlled the lines.
Two did you notice their D front and attacks....a lot of the scheme was the old 46 Bear D with the movement, blitzes and picks....designed to stop runs Rams 62 yards...and get the QB rattled...4 sacks, numerous hurries pressures hits knockdowns ....controlling the line making QB ineffective.
The difference between Pats and 31 other teams....they adapt, they execute fundamentals , and they have no egos.
Game was low scoring...but old school punch your face execute fundamentals win as a team....selfless....it works!

▪ As National Signing Day approaches Wednesday, there is uncertainty inside UM about whether the Canes will add any new commitments.
Ouch!

OL Darius Washington has it down to Miami and FSU (currently committed to Miss. State); CB Emerson is down to Miami, Miss. State (currently committed); RB Richards is down to Miami, Auburn and Florida and DL Bogle is down to Miami, Florida and Alabama (currently committed).
If the Canes get all 4, it will be a GREAT (and I really mean GREAT) NSD, and the Canes would have a chance to finish in the Top 25 recruiting rankings. if the Canes get 2 of the 4, then I would still be satisfied. Getting zero would be a tough NSD.
Once the recruits are signed, I think CMD will go after a few more transfers.

About time to knock the cobwebs and dirtdaubers off the Bad Bowla Grits and put our nose in the wind.

Full moon in February is TU 2/19 and March is TH 3/21 and April is FR 4/19. It has been colder than usual so the bedding and bite may be delayed this year into March and April?

We need to go after the best players....but do not always agree with the rankings. some of the sites have really good people who know the coaches and players, programs, and the game.
Some people just write to read their garbage in print. In general they are people like Bayless or Cowherd non starters just talk....so many of the sites are the same.
Clappy was a good OC....but they recruited based on the sites....do not think they even bothered to see a lot of kids...look at the failures....Kyle and Kirby....not what they were projected...RS got all the NW crew....not that good overall....Willie Williams looked great...but no go.
It happens....but where we could get the really good ones and the sleepers...we are not getting either of them any longer...or at least not enough of them. Manny and co are hustling this year...late start but i think they are onto something. They are working. Rumph was a good player and coaches well...If I was him, I would lean on my UM experience more....talk up the great ones shhow them clips, drive the point home that we WANT TO GET THERE AGAIN!!! Use you past to build now and the future!
Not sure what KD11 was...but he was a smart leader who had other greats around him. Kaaya was a 4,....but once in college he was good...but not a difference maker. Neither guy was a great athlete, had great physical abilities...Dorey had an odd release, not real mobile, not big or strong....but took what he had and put it with what was around him.....and led by example. Kaaya had more tools perhaps...but nowhere near the talent and coaching....or that leadership ability....guess you never know until its on the filed ya find out.

Other teams' detritus? Why bother? The best transfers have already found new schools.
But it's always good, I guess, to keep at least one scholarship open just in case another prospect become available.
So, you may be right - especially, if we strike out with the remaining targets on NSD, and if Coach Diaz can still find an experienced transfer student to add some much needed depth in a position of need.

Former Georgia Tech OL PARKER Braun (who was first team All ACC last season and second team All ACC his sophomore season, and has great leadership qualities) is looking to transfer, I think. Miami is/was in the mix. If he is available, he is exactly what the Canes has needs on the offensive line.
Posted by: BigWindyCane | February 04, 2019 at 09:02 PM
Never hurts to have the OL get better with experience and leadership....it has been an area we have been so average at....Go Manny!!!!

When was the last time we got lucky on signing day?
The Herb hasn't ever felt the love from Richards.
Feet good about Emerson a couple weeks ago and several sites had him flipped but now nothing. If Bogle doesn't come, this time, the dude just discoed on our dime, while sucking on a red sucker. Washington is the least likely to flip to us.

BTW...Just for the record, I am a strong Nebraska lean, but am also considering FAU, UCF, FIU and Miami.

Semi-reliable sources say that you are a silent lean toward UM.

Reading on Yardbarker, that the U has had 84 decoms since 2015. No one else is in the same stratus sphere. LSU has 33 in the same time frame.

I try not to excited until the ink is dry. "Lucy" has been snatching the football away from us for the last 15 years when we try to kick it!

Francois has had many "incidents / Issues" so I don't think If I am FSU, I would take him back.

Shea Dixon, LSU insider:
Sources indicated to the Geaux247 staff on Tuesday evening that Williams and his camp were torn because Miami was pressing him hard to be the top cornerback in their class. Right now the Hurricanes only have one cornerback committed in Te’Cory Couch, who is ranked No. 340 nationally - well behind Williams.
Because of that, Williams shifted from LSU to Miami. On Tuesday morning, I put in a Crystal Ball prediction for Miami after going "cloudy" on Monday night.
We saw for months that Williams talked about LSU after Alabama, but the chance to be at a school like Miami as “the guy” in the class has evidently pulled on him late in the game.
We expect Williams to sign with Miami on Wednesday.
Also:
This is coming from solid sources on the LSU side. He got some late reservations over the depth chart at LSU vs. Miami and knows he can play early in Coral Gables. Expect him to ink with the Hurricanes barring a late shift.
