Squaring off against third-ranked Virginia Saturday afternoon at John Paul Jones Arena, the University of Miami men's basketball team posted one of its best defensive efforts of the season, but it was not enough to take down the Cavaliers in a 56-46 defeat.
The Hurricanes (9-12, 1-8 ACC) were led offensively by Chris Lykes (16 points), while the sophomore guard was joined in double figures by redshirt sophomore forward Sam Waardenburg (10 points) and redshirt senior Zach Johnson (10 points). Senior centerEbuka Izundu finished just shy of a double-double, closing out the afternoon with eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds. As a unit, Miami only turned the ball over a season-tying low seven times, while forcing Virginia to cough the ball up 14 times.
In a defensive clash, the Canes limited the Cavaliers to 42.3 percent (22-of-52) shooting from the field and 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from beyond the arc, while Miami shot 17-of-50 (34 percent) overall and just 4-of-21 (19.0 percent) from 3-point territory. The Cavaliers took advantage on the glass, out-rebounding Miami, 42-24.
Virginia (20-1, 8-1) was led by a trio in double figures, including De'Andre Hunter (14 points), Mamadi Diakite (11 points) and Kyle Guy (10 points).
With Miami trailing by five following the opening 5:46 of action, Waardenburg led the Canes on a personal 7-0 run over the next 3:06 of play, as Miami jumped in front, 11-9. However, Virginia countered with a 9-0 run of its own before entering the locker room maintaining a seven-point lead, 28-21, a lead it would not look back on.
The Hurricanes will return to action on Wednesday when they welcome Notre Dame to the Watsco Center at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
The Rams offense looks like the u's from this past season, hopeless!

Don't know what to make of this but all of the sudden Quashon Fuller is now linked to Bama. Do this mean what I think it do? Does this mean that Bogel is ours?

Going off topic but if you have a chance to watch the Foo Fighters show from Saturday night in Atlanta it's off the chain! Zac Brown and Tom Morello sit in with the band and they do a cover of Black Sabbath's War Pig, then Perry Farrell comes out and they all play Jane's Addiction Mountain Song.
Roger Taylor from Queen plays drums on Under Pressure! It's the rock and roll show of the year by far!! You can watch the whole on Twitter at the Direct TV page.

Stars are a ranking system for HS players, not a 5 year, 100k warranty.
If ER and RL were low stars, they sure ended up good. Ending up in the HOF does not mean they over achieved, but that people who did not recruit them did not see the hidden talent and ability, the willingness to learn and be coached....and fundamental skills.
Stars can be deceiving. A guy may come out as a 5 star, say J12....but when they get to college, their physical limitations, game intelligence, fundamentals, willingness to learn and be coached prior coaching, and current coaching may limit their ceiling. Jacory, while a nice kid, was not an elite QB at all. He had some skills and fundamentals but not enough to be elite. His UM coaches....not good....the players around him...the same....some skills but not elite. Those teams were average as individuals and as a group...players and coaches.
An ER, who people judged lower, had hidden talent, was taught new skills, honed his fundamentals to expertise, had really good coaches, competed and played with other extremely talented players which rubs off, and went to a school with highly competitive program.
ER was a good player who became a great player via hard work great coaching, competing and playing with greats, strong fundamentals, in a great program....he got better.
There are 5 stars who do have it and you know they will go far....others come in lower rated and they develop into 5 stars at the college level.
Hard to judge them as they go to the NFL as it is the elite of all.....a whole different concept....it becomes a job....$...but the ideas is similar....perhaps a little easier to judge or rate...but still....
Tebow, Manziel, Dorsey....acclaimed in college...not successful pros. TB12.....last pick in draft....as good as it gets.....Jerry Rice.....pretty good...Hersch Walker....cant miss....average career....
You never know on all of them....at both levels...

About time to knock the cobwebs and dirtdaubers off the Bad Bowla Grits and put our nose in the wind.
Posted by: NativeCane | February 04, 2019 at 01:38 PM
Two things I took note of from SB....that have always been in my game.
since I started playing at 7, whomever I played for stressed heavily that "if you win the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, you will have a very strong chance of winning". Its just a fact; you got to rule the trenches. The Pats did a great job of blocking; 154 yds on the ground. They pressured Goff all day. Pats did not convert 3rd downs well....but they shut the Rams down on O. They ran and passed enough, played D...and won. They controlled the lines.
Two did you notice their D front and attacks....a lot of the scheme was the old 46 Bear D with the movement, blitzes and picks....designed to stop runs Rams 62 yards...and get the QB rattled...4 sacks, numerous hurries pressures hits knockdowns ....controlling the line making QB ineffective.
The difference between Pats and 31 other teams....they adapt, they execute fundamentals , and they have no egos.
Game was low scoring...but old school punch your face execute fundamentals win as a team....selfless....it works!

▪ As National Signing Day approaches Wednesday, there is uncertainty inside UM about whether the Canes will add any new commitments.
Ouch!
Posted by: nemo2002 | February 04, 2019 at 02:14 PM
OL Darius Washington has it down to Miami and FSU (currently committed to Miss. State); CB Emerson is down to Miami, Miss. State (currently committed); RB Richards is down to Miami, Auburn and Florida and DL Bogle is down to Miami, Florida and Alabama (currently committed).
If the Canes get all 4, it will be a GREAT (and I really mean GREAT) NSD, and the Canes would have a chance to finish in the Top 25 recruiting rankings. if the Canes get 2 of the 4, then I would still be satisfied. Getting zero would be a tough NSD.
Once the recruits are signed, I think CMD will go after a few more transfers.

We need to go after the best players....but do not always agree with the rankings. some of the sites have really good people who know the coaches and players, programs, and the game.
Some people just write to read their garbage in print. In general they are people like Bayless or Cowherd non starters just talk....so many of the sites are the same.
Clappy was a good OC....but they recruited based on the sites....do not think they even bothered to see a lot of kids...look at the failures....Kyle and Kirby....not what they were projected...RS got all the NW crew....not that good overall....Willie Williams looked great...but no go.
It happens....but where we could get the really good ones and the sleepers...we are not getting either of them any longer...or at least not enough of them. Manny and co are hustling this year...late start but i think they are onto something. They are working. Rumph was a good player and coaches well...If I was him, I would lean on my UM experience more....talk up the great ones shhow them clips, drive the point home that we WANT TO GET THERE AGAIN!!! Use you past to build now and the future!
Not sure what KD11 was...but he was a smart leader who had other greats around him. Kaaya was a 4,....but once in college he was good...but not a difference maker. Neither guy was a great athlete, had great physical abilities...Dorey had an odd release, not real mobile, not big or strong....but took what he had and put it with what was around him.....and led by example. Kaaya had more tools perhaps...but nowhere near the talent and coaching....or that leadership ability....guess you never know until its on the filed ya find out.

Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | February 04, 2019 at 02:16 PM
Other teams' detritus? Why bother? The best transfers have already found new schools.
But it's always good, I guess, to keep at least one scholarship open just in case another prospect become available.
So, you may be right - especially, if we strike out with the remaining targets on NSD, and if Coach Diaz can still find an experienced transfer student to add some much needed depth in a position of need.

Former Georgia Tech OL PARKER Braun (who was first team All ACC last season and second team All ACC his sophomore season, and has great leadership qualities) is looking to transfer, I think. Miami is/was in the mix. If he is available, he is exactly what the Canes has needs on the offensive line.
Posted by: BigWindyCane | February 04, 2019 at 09:02 PM
Never hurts to have the OL get better with experience and leadership....it has been an area we have been so average at....Go Manny!!!!
Posted by: VA Cane | February 04, 2019 at 09:10 PM
When was the last time we got lucky on signing day?
The Herb hasn't ever felt the love from Richards.
Feet good about Emerson a couple weeks ago and several sites had him flipped but now nothing. If Bogle doesn't come, this time, the dude just discoed on our dime, while sucking on a red sucker. Washington is the least likely to flip to us.

Reading on Yardbarker, that the U has had 84 decoms since 2015. No one else is in the same stratus sphere. LSU has 33 in the same time frame.

Oh, for whatever reason I thought it was Tuesday.
Posted by: Old Skool | February 05, 2019 at 10:20 AM
Shea Dixon, LSU insider:
Sources indicated to the Geaux247 staff on Tuesday evening that Williams and his camp were torn because Miami was pressing him hard to be the top cornerback in their class. Right now the Hurricanes only have one cornerback committed in Te’Cory Couch, who is ranked No. 340 nationally - well behind Williams.
Because of that, Williams shifted from LSU to Miami. On Tuesday morning, I put in a Crystal Ball prediction for Miami after going "cloudy" on Monday night.
We saw for months that Williams talked about LSU after Alabama, but the chance to be at a school like Miami as “the guy” in the class has evidently pulled on him late in the game.
We expect Williams to sign with Miami on Wednesday.
Also:
This is coming from solid sources on the LSU side. He got some late reservations over the depth chart at LSU vs. Miami and knows he can play early in Coral Gables. Expect him to ink with the Hurricanes barring a late shift.
