Squaring off against third-ranked Virginia Saturday afternoon at John Paul Jones Arena, the University of Miami men's basketball team posted one of its best defensive efforts of the season, but it was not enough to take down the Cavaliers in a 56-46 defeat.
The Hurricanes (9-12, 1-8 ACC) were led offensively by Chris Lykes (16 points), while the sophomore guard was joined in double figures by redshirt sophomore forward Sam Waardenburg (10 points) and redshirt senior Zach Johnson (10 points). Senior centerEbuka Izundu finished just shy of a double-double, closing out the afternoon with eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds. As a unit, Miami only turned the ball over a season-tying low seven times, while forcing Virginia to cough the ball up 14 times.
In a defensive clash, the Canes limited the Cavaliers to 42.3 percent (22-of-52) shooting from the field and 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from beyond the arc, while Miami shot 17-of-50 (34 percent) overall and just 4-of-21 (19.0 percent) from 3-point territory. The Cavaliers took advantage on the glass, out-rebounding Miami, 42-24.
Virginia (20-1, 8-1) was led by a trio in double figures, including De'Andre Hunter (14 points), Mamadi Diakite (11 points) and Kyle Guy (10 points).
With Miami trailing by five following the opening 5:46 of action, Waardenburg led the Canes on a personal 7-0 run over the next 3:06 of play, as Miami jumped in front, 11-9. However, Virginia countered with a 9-0 run of its own before entering the locker room maintaining a seven-point lead, 28-21, a lead it would not look back on.
The Hurricanes will return to action on Wednesday when they welcome Notre Dame to the Watsco Center at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2.

He is at the perfect school for an immature self centered kid to screw up. After signing day wears off he will be on social media trying to stay in the limelight.

Richt on the addition of quarterbacks Cade Weldon and N’Kosi Perry and how the race will unfold…
“The quarterback position, talking about having two that we’ve signed, one is already here in Cade Weldon and N’Kosi [Perry] on the way - both of these guys are very talented guys. They’re quality quarterbacks that are athletic. Sometimes you have quarterbacks who can run, but they’re a runner who can throw decent. These guys are true quarterbacks who happen to be able to run well, which is a nice dynamic to have. It doesn’t mean you have to have a guy that can run like a deer to be great, because it’s has been happening for years without it. But I do like the fact that they can move. Like you mentioned, Cade is in town and he’ll get a chance to compete this spring. He’ll be in practice, he’ll be in the meetings, he’ll do all those things - he’ll get about as many reps as everyone else on scholarship this spring. It’s a wide open competition. I absolutely don’t have a front runner, in my mind. You would think I would after being here a year, but it’s as wide open as it can possibly be and my guess is it’ll go well into the summer and fall camp before we figure out who it is.”

Thankfully Diaz was able to bring in some really solid grad transfers and Martin, Martell and Bolden are big time guys who will still have multiple years of eligibility left who don’t count in the rankings.
Otherwise it could have been really ugly.
Posted by: Go Canes!! | February 06, 2019 at 02:36 PM
I keep checking back and I'm not seeing a lot of new recruits listed. Are they "flooding" in later, or did "Lucy" yank the football...again?

Louis Hedley seems to be the hot new player.
Expect lots of Harvey Korman gifs from Blazing Saddles "That's Hedley"
Personally, I can't wait to see what happens to the first guy who tries to rough the punter. Hedley's 6'4" 215 pounds and jacked and also somewhere in his mid-twenties. God help the 18 year-old who tries to make his bones against Hedley.

If you count our transfers then we would be around #15. And plus ratings have to do with the size of the class as well.

"Louis Hedley seems to be the hot new player."
Yes, definitely. He's already a fan favorite I guess. "Tie me kangaro down sport"!
I'm glad that The New Miami coaching staff identified and signed the best JC punter who was still available for this class. And it is notable that Manny & Co. plucked him out of Australia, via a JC in California. Impressive!
However, before Canes fans go all agog about this new recruit, we need to be mindful of the fact that none of the universities in California - nor any of the other schools out west - offered him a scholarship. I wonder why?
P.S. Don't be suprised if the Miami-hating NCAA investigates his eligibility, because he previousaly played for a "semi-pro" Aussie Rules FB team.
Posted by: nemo2002 | February 06, 2019 at 04:38 PM
Well another ho hum signing day but we always got the waiver wire to get us back up to snuff.
Bottom line, Manny is going to have to win and not choke against these teams who have no business being close to us.
I know the dude realizes this that's reason for the portal patrol. Thank God he does have that for an option or we would be in a world of shyt.
Had all kinds of ships to offer and no high school takers.
Just like always, there's always next year. With the talent we will have 10 wins is attainable.

Canes is smaller than most at only 16 players.

Posted by: 86Cane | February 06, 2019 at 04:56 PM
Manny should have at least 5 ships still stuffed in his back pocket. Still way behind Clemson but closing thanks to portal. Whom ever he goes after hopefully will have multiple years left. Surprised he didn't go after a few Juccos.
