I agree that it's probably time for Coach L to retire, but he is the same man that won our ACC Title and was simply hobbled by the Adidas scandal IMO.

You cannot lose the amount of talent that coach lost as a result of the scandal and expect things to keep chugging along like normal. There's no "next man up" when you lose that much talent in one whack.

I agree that it's probably time for Coach L to retire, but he is the same man that won our ACC Title . . .

Yeah, but he won that (2012-2013) ACC title with some senior players that he inherited from Coach Hamilton.

Simply stated, Coach Laranaga doesn't recruit better than most of the other coaches in the ACC, including Coach Ham at FSU. That's the main reason why UM doesn't have a better men's basketball team - and why Coach L really needs to go.

Coach L will return. Next season could be another tough one, but they should be a little better. The Canes are simply not as talented as past teams, so the Canes might struggle against Carolina, Duke and the truly talented teams. A 7th place finish or better in the ACC next season will be a very successful season with the talent Coach L has coming back.

"Train Kept A-Rollin'" (or "The Train Kept A-Rollin'") is a song first recorded by American jazz and rhythm and blues musician Tiny Bradshaw in 1951. Originally performed in the style of a jump blues, Bradshaw borrowed lyrics from an earlier song and set them to an upbeat shuffle arrangement that inspired other musicians to perform and record it. Johnny Burnette and the Rock and Roll Trio made an important contribution in 1956 – they reworked it as a guitar riff-driven song, which features an early use of intentionally distorted guitar in rock music.

In 1965, the Yardbirds popularized the song as an early psychedelic blues rock song, due largely to Jeff Beck's fuzz-toned guitar work. Theirs soon became the most copied arrangement with recordings by a variety of musicians. After guitarist Jimmy Page joined the group, the Yardbirds recorded an updated version with new lyrics as "Stroll On" for the film Blowup in 1966. With a highly charged rhythm section and a dual lead guitar attack by Beck and Page, it is seen as a forerunner to heavy metal music.

When the Yardbirds broke up in 1968, "Train Kept A-Rollin'" was adopted as a concert opener by Page's new band, Led Zeppelin, during its early (and again later) touring years. The song also became an important part of Aerosmith's early live repertoire and in 1974, they recorded it for their second album. Their version is actually a two-part song – the first has a slower, groove-oriented arrangement, while the second uses that of the Yardbirds. Aerosmith turned it into a hard rock standard and a staple of classic rock radio; it remains one of their most popular tunes. "Train Kept A-Rollin'" has been performed and recorded by numerous other artists.

86Cane

In 1974, Aerosmith brought "Train Kept A-Rollin'" into the hard-rock mainstream.[37] Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, and Tom Hamilton had performed the song prior to joining Aerosmith. Perry recalled, "'Train Kept A-Rollin'' was the only song we had in common when we first got together. Steven's band had played 'Train' and Tom and I played it in our band ... It's a blues song, if you follow its roots all the way back ... I always thought if I could just play one song, it would be that one because of what it does to me".[37] Perry's band began performing the song regularly after he had been moved by the performance of "Stroll On" in Blowup; Tyler recalled his band opened for the Yardbirds in 1966:

I had seen the Yardbirds play somewhere the previous summer with both Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page in the band ... In Westport [at their supporting gig on October 22, 1966] we found out that Jeff had left the band and Jimmy was playing lead guitar by himself. I watched him from the edge of the stage and all I can say is that he knocked my tits off. They did 'Train Kept A-Rollin'' and it was just so heavy. They were just an un-fuckin'-believable band.[38]

Good to see the team finally hitting the baseball. It's only taken 3 years. Defense is so so and we got to be better holding runners on. Right now we are to easy to run on. Pitching has been okay but still to many walks.

Pre 72 I liked the Stones anything after not so much. Give The Herb a great slide guitar player to listen to and it's all good!

herbieibis

Looking at Clemson's 2020 class with 9 verbals. Already have 5 offensive linemen committed plus 2 Dee Tackles. The 2 areas we usually have trouble recruiting, although we do have a couple Dt's committed for once.

BigWindyCane

Happy St. Patty’s Day. Spring practice starts next wee for #TNM, and the Coach Manny Diaz era takes the practice field for the first time

JCane

Canes lose both of the last two vs. UNC, blowing another big opportunity on the road vs a ranked opponent, as they did vs. FU, to take a series after winning the opener. Lots of big hits given up early to lose an early three run lead off a HR today.

Terrance Sullivan

Yeah that was disheartening JCane

86Cane

So what U are sying is that the UM baseball team is better but not good enough to beat the better teams 2 out of three games just yet?

I can dig it.

BWC...I agree with you. EVERY coach in college basketball should be required to be 70 or older. My only question is why didn't Miami hire a 70 year old head football coach to replace the young, spry 58 year old Mark Richt since that seems to be all the rage these days?

I second that motion.

BigWindyCane1

IMO, the NCAA should implement a rule to allow all players to transfer without repercussions if their head coach leaves. Coaching changes are beyond a player's control, and can impact a player's experience as a college athlete.

But the NCAA won't do it. The highly-paid coaches won't like this rule to be implemented, but it is the least the NCAA can do to help the amateur athletes get the most out of their college experience.

If you think about it, Urban Meyer recruits Martell to be his QB, then Meyer announced he is retiring. It is only fair that Martell not be punished because his coach leaves.

It is going to be a great spring for #TNM

BigWindyCane1

Good question. The Canes missed out on Bobby Bowden (89), Howard Schnellenberger (85), Lou Holtz (82), and Jimmy Johnson (75).

Butch Davis is only 67, so in three years, he will be ready to coach the Canes again ;-)

ACC head coaches 70 and older who made the NCAA tournament this year:

Jim Boeheim (74)

Leonard Hamilton (70)

They made the NCAA tournament because they consistently recruit good players. UM is not in the NCAA tournament because our head coach seemingly lacks the ability (any longer?) to recruit enough good players, and not merely because of his age - although that may be a factor too.

VA Cane

Herb,
I think from 69 to 73 The Stones are untouchable....with Mick Taylor/Keef as the players, and Charlie and Wyman holding the beat...Bobby Keys Jim Price on horns...and Nicky Hopkins on piano....I have nearly every show from those tours...CD vinyl....and many bootleg cassettes...they were incredible...after Mick Taylor left...74...still good but never like 69-73! The Dolphins got rid of Tannehill and picked up FitzTragic from the Bucs?

Am I missing something here? Does Fitz have a connection to the new coaching staff?

The dolphins plan is to fail spectacularly in 2019 with hopes of finally getting a franchise QB next year or 2020.

TonyCane

I hate the Fitzpatrick pickup. I had rather that they roll with Luke Falk this year and go 1-15 or 0-16. I would rather them trade or cut anyone not on their rookie deals this year. They have been bad for TWO decades. It’s approaching Green Bay and Tampa Bay 70s and 80s level of bad. They have to get the top pick in the 2020 draft. A meaningless 4 win season just perpetuates the sorry state of the Dolphins franchise.

And it has to be 2020, because I have a strong feeling that the lockout may wipe out the 2021 season...with Lawrence remaining in school.

This is going to be a really interesting competition.

BigWindyCane1

Video of Martell looks good. Martell definitely got better coaching. Glad to hear that Perry is turning heads. Hopefully, we have a real QB competition and some outstanding play at the most critical position.

As for Cam Davis, I think DeeJay Dallas will have to split reps with Davis and Lingard because they bring a home-run threat every time they touch the ball. This could open up the offense in many ways.

thirstybuzzardcane

We'll see a lot of 2 back sets, Windy. We have too much talent not to.

thirstybuzzardcane

I think any of our QB's will be just fine. The coaching did not help them at all

Two questions:

1. Is it within NCAA rules for Miami to have a good QB?

2. Who wants to bet that the refs throw a flag the first time a UM player goes in motion? They will not believe their eyes and will automtically think it is illegal motion?

Terrance Sullivan

LMBAO at it was all coaching fault and the players are blameless for last years debacle. Pure Comedy.

You're dumb if you really think the coaches didn't put our QB's in terrible positions! When you run the same 5 plays out of the same formation the whole game, your QB's are toast!
