It took a little longer than they would have liked, but the Miami Hurricanes' bats came alive to push them past Jackson State, 8-1.
The Canes (14-3, 2-1 ACC) struggled offensively early, but Adrian Del Castillo sparked a four-run fifth inning and never looked back. The victory over the Tigers (6-13, 1-2 SWAC) secured a midweek sweep of Jackson State to close out an 8-1 record over the nine-game homestand. It also tied the best start by the Hurricanes since opening the 2016 season 14-3.
"They threw some guys that our guys hadn't seen a lot of," head coach Gino DiMare said. "The velocity was not high. They were throwing a lot of junk at us and our guys struggled. It's not something we've practiced a lot of because we don't face a whole lot of it. Having said that, the fifth inning was huge.
Miami, who was held hitless for 4.1 innings, finally broke through with a big inning off lefty reliever Mario Lopez in the fifth. Del Castillo's RBI single to center was the first Hurricane hit of the night and it drove home Lala to put Miami ahead, 2-1. Alex Toral followed with his ninth home run of the season, a three-run bomb to right that gave the Canes a four-run lead, 5-1.
"I feel like hitting is contagious and once Del Castillo got that line drive to break it open to center field, it boosts the confidence for the next guy and that happened to be me," Toral said. "I happened to get my pitch and was able to do what I was able to do with it."
Del Castillo singled home another run in the sixth, smacking a two-out hit to right off reliever Garth Cahill that pushed home Lala and gave Miami a 6-1 lead. An inning later, Chad Crosbie added a two-out RBI single to right that gave the Hurricanes a 7-1 advantage.
"I was very happy with our bullpen the last two days," DiMare said. "It's something that we've had some question marks and concerns. Last night, Maury, Veliz and Fed all threw great and then you had Mixon come in and throw good and so did Gates. They pounded the strike zone, which is all I can ask of those guys, throw strikes, go after hitters, especially when you have leads and they did that. I was very, very happy with our bullpen."
Miami hits the road this weekend for an ACC series at North Carolina. The Hurricanes and Tar Heels will open the series on Friday at 6 p.m. Saturday's game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start, while Sunday's finale will begin at 1 p.m.

I agree that it's probably time for Coach L to retire, but he is the same man that won our ACC Title and was simply hobbled by the Adidas scandal IMO.
You cannot lose the amount of talent that coach lost as a result of the scandal and expect things to keep chugging along like normal. There's no "next man up" when you lose that much talent in one whack.

I agree that it's probably time for Coach L to retire, but he is the same man that won our ACC Title . . .
Yeah, but he won that (2012-2013) ACC title with some senior players that he inherited from Coach Hamilton.
Simply stated, Coach Laranaga doesn't recruit better than most of the other coaches in the ACC, including Coach Ham at FSU. That's the main reason why UM doesn't have a better men's basketball team - and why Coach L really needs to go.

Coach L will return. Next season could be another tough one, but they should be a little better. The Canes are simply not as talented as past teams, so the Canes might struggle against Carolina, Duke and the truly talented teams. A 7th place finish or better in the ACC next season will be a very successful season with the talent Coach L has coming back.

Great Blog title Soup, that song has quite a history, actually started out in the 1940's as a Cowboy song.
Having a lot of fun watching Dimares boys, hope their bats remain mighty!

"Train Kept A-Rollin'" (or "The Train Kept A-Rollin'") is a song first recorded by American jazz and rhythm and blues musician Tiny Bradshaw in 1951. Originally performed in the style of a jump blues, Bradshaw borrowed lyrics from an earlier song and set them to an upbeat shuffle arrangement that inspired other musicians to perform and record it. Johnny Burnette and the Rock and Roll Trio made an important contribution in 1956 – they reworked it as a guitar riff-driven song, which features an early use of intentionally distorted guitar in rock music.
In 1965, the Yardbirds popularized the song as an early psychedelic blues rock song, due largely to Jeff Beck's fuzz-toned guitar work. Theirs soon became the most copied arrangement with recordings by a variety of musicians. After guitarist Jimmy Page joined the group, the Yardbirds recorded an updated version with new lyrics as "Stroll On" for the film Blowup in 1966. With a highly charged rhythm section and a dual lead guitar attack by Beck and Page, it is seen as a forerunner to heavy metal music.
When the Yardbirds broke up in 1968, "Train Kept A-Rollin'" was adopted as a concert opener by Page's new band, Led Zeppelin, during its early (and again later) touring years. The song also became an important part of Aerosmith's early live repertoire and in 1974, they recorded it for their second album. Their version is actually a two-part song – the first has a slower, groove-oriented arrangement, while the second uses that of the Yardbirds. Aerosmith turned it into a hard rock standard and a staple of classic rock radio; it remains one of their most popular tunes. "Train Kept A-Rollin'" has been performed and recorded by numerous other artists.

In 1974, Aerosmith brought "Train Kept A-Rollin'" into the hard-rock mainstream.[37] Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, and Tom Hamilton had performed the song prior to joining Aerosmith. Perry recalled, "'Train Kept A-Rollin'' was the only song we had in common when we first got together. Steven's band had played 'Train' and Tom and I played it in our band ... It's a blues song, if you follow its roots all the way back ... I always thought if I could just play one song, it would be that one because of what it does to me".[37] Perry's band began performing the song regularly after he had been moved by the performance of "Stroll On" in Blowup; Tyler recalled his band opened for the Yardbirds in 1966:
I had seen the Yardbirds play somewhere the previous summer with both Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page in the band ... In Westport [at their supporting gig on October 22, 1966] we found out that Jeff had left the band and Jimmy was playing lead guitar by himself. I watched him from the edge of the stage and all I can say is that he knocked my tits off. They did 'Train Kept A-Rollin'' and it was just so heavy. They were just an un-fuckin'-believable band.[38]

Baseball is hitting better. Gil is tearing it up so far. Pitching and D have been a mixed bag, but D can be worked on. Can't argue with the record right now, especially after the last 2 seasins.

Good to see the team finally hitting the baseball. It's only taken 3 years. Defense is so so and we got to be better holding runners on. Right now we are to easy to run on. Pitching has been okay but still to many walks.
Pre 72 I liked the Stones anything after not so much. Give The Herb a great slide guitar player to listen to and it's all good!
