The University of Miami -- in conjunction with the University of Florida, Florida Citrus Sports, ESPN and CFB150, Inc. – announced Thursday that the Hurricanes' season opener against Florida in the Camping World Kickoff has been moved to Saturday, Aug. 24.
The game, which will be held at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, was originally scheduled for Aug. 31. The date change was approved by the NCAA Thursday. The matchup will be televised by ESPN at 7 p.m. ET.
Manny Diaz's first game as head coach of the Hurricanes will also be UM's first meeting with Florida since 2013, a 21-16 Miami home win. The series started in 1938 and this is the first time the two teams have played at a neutral site in the regular season since Miami's 32-20 win at Tampa Stadium in 1984. Miami leads the overall series, 29-26, and have won seven of the past eight meetings.
"ESPN approached both UM and Florida with the unique idea to broadcast this matchup as the culmination of a daylong celebration of college football's 150th anniversary season," Director of Athletics Blake James said. "After consulting with Manny, we agreed that this would be a tremendous opportunity to showcase Hurricanes football – both our present team and our long, storied tradition – on a national stage.
"I want to thank the NCAA, ESPN, Florida Citrus Sports, CFB150, Inc., and the University of Florida for their cooperation and support throughout this process. We understand that the new game date could affect Hurricanes fans who had already made travel plans for the original game date. We will work diligently with any of those affected to help ensure that they can still attend the Camping World Kickoff and have a great experience."
Both schools have had conversations with primary air carriers asking that they provide relief for fans who need to change their plans. Florida Citrus Sports is also in contact with the Orlando tourism and lodging community and will enlist their support to accommodate travel revisions prompted by the change in date.
What A Bleep Show! Both UF and UM should be ashamed of themselves.

Honestly don’t see what the big deal is. Everyone is getting almost six months notice and it actually makes the game even more of a marquee matchup.
We’re officially kicking off the D1 football season.

The only problem, we lose a week of practice.
Posted by: Herbieibis | March 07, 2019 at 08:41 PM
We don't lose any practice time. We will be allowed to start fall practice a week early.

I think Florida has to definitely be favored. They have continuity...at least more so than we do.
On the positive side Florida will have nothing to scheme against. There’s not much film on Tate, and last year’s Miami offense film is meaningless.

Go Canes don't be. Jackass. Some of us have to request time off from work set up flights, Hotel Reservations etc. And UM, UF, etc knew they had petitioned to have the Game on August 24th but they didn't say jack bleep about it to the fans pushing the August 31st date. A obvious deceptive move when all they had to do back in December is say the Game might be on August 24th or August 31st or September 1st plan accordingly we will update you as soon as possible. But they didn't do that. Last year they moved the Game from Saturday September 1st to Sunday September 2nd but they let that be known a year in advance before they sold the first ticket by either school. Go Canes get your head Outta your Arse. Congratulations U win the Dumbass of the Day Award U should slap yourself. Freaking Pathetic just like UM and UF for running a Mickey Mouse operation.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | March 07, 2019 at 09:30 PM
And last year we had time to set up Hotel arraignments, flight arrangements or travel arrangements, set up work request time off etc. And everything was smooth. This year it's a cluster bleep. Unprofessional as hell. Great job UM and UF way to give the double barrel Middle Finger to your Fan Base.

Good rant on the fans getting dicked by pulling the rug out from under them with no regard for the changes thousands of people will have to make in their own schedules.

Solar Thanks Brotha I appreciate it. It's unreal how tone deaf UF and UM are. Sad.

Elites?
Give me a break man.
I'm currently an employer, and have been an employee in my lifetime.
Sorry, SIX MONTHS is plenty of time to change what will probably be ONE day off for most people. And 99% of hotels can change your stay date without penalty.
I do feel badly for anyone charged a change fee to rearrange a flight but the vast majority of people who go to that game are driving, you two included 86 and Terrance.
Both schools are also offering refunds on tickets purchased, no questions asked if the change makes it impossible to attend.
You all make it seem like fans got 24 hours notice to change everything.
Butch up man, you sound like babies. Stop being outraged just to be outraged.

You are absolutely right! Our defense matches up very well with their offensive scheme. IMO we could've beat Florida/Mullen in 2008 if we didn't have so many young guys playing. We actually shut Tebow down!
Diaz knows Mullen well and will have a huge advantage because of that. I like us a lot in this game. First team to 21 will win!
Florida lost a lot on their OL as well. They are replacing 4 starters. My buddy who is a Florida fan is really worried about their OL.

Having the game Aug 24 will make your flights and hotels cheaper. You have to remember that the original date was on a Holiday weekend which is busy in Orlando.
The only problem I see is people who have to take off work, but there is plenty of time to request the 24th weekend off. Having that extra day on the Holiday weekend probably helps as well.

If I spent a couple grand to go all the way to Texas to have the shyt stomped out of me, I'd feel a lot better about the BOT if they considered cutting me a little slack once or twice a season.

Lost in all the huffing and puffing by some about the date change, was this excellent point.
They'll be favored but Felipe Franks still sucks and didn't have a single great game against a quality defense last year.
They were the 2017 version of the Canes. Some miracle comebacks against some average teams and one quaity win against LSU. A game Franks was awful in.
They also lost four of five offensive line starters. Gonna be a great game.
Can't wait.

I hope so. A win will be huge for us.
A Florida win helps cement the notion that they are the FL program on the ascent, and a potential successor to Alabama. It solidifies recruiting progress made by Mullen. It also reduces our margin of error to zero for the rest of the season
A Miami win pops an illusionary balloon that is inflating vis a vi Florida’s ascent. It’s early enough to change minds for primary recruits and gives us instant credibility. It also greatly increases the odds that we are a Top 4 team when we make it to the ACC championship.

Yep:
▪ UM (13-16, 5-12 in the ACC) completes its worst regular season under Jim Larranaga when it plays at Virginia Tech at 7 p.m. on Friday on ESPN2.
Miami views what happened this season as a perfect storm of unfortunate events: the NCAA suspension of Dewan Hernandez, the departure of Mt. Saint Mary’s transfer guard Miles Wilson and a season-ending injury to Deng Gak. That compounded the fact that Lonnie Walker and Bruce Brown left early for the NBA.
Larranaga mentioned that at this time last year, UM was the third seed in the ACC Tournament. “We were looking forward to having that kind of year until these disasters occurred,” Larranaga told Joe Zagacki on WQAM’s Hurricane Hotline this week.
Though Wilson’s exit was never explained at the time - he would have been an asset as a scoring wing player - Larranaga said he simply “dropped out of school.”
Here was another hurtful factor that Larranaga didn’t mention: UM believed it was on the verge of landing at least three quality recruits before reports surfaced that incorrectly linked Miami to the Adidas scandal. One of those players, four-star Jalen Carey, is a freshman point guard at Syracuse.

Posted by: solarcane | March 08, 2019 at 04:24 PM
LOL...I’m just imagining the media hyperventilating about Florida under Mullen. But he’s no Saban.
For one thing, he doesn’t have the enhanced recruiting budget. Second thing, he doesn’t own a player friendly car leasing business.
Posted by: TonyCane | March 08, 2019 at 06:50 PM
I think Mullen is trash. I wouldn't want him here!
Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | March 08, 2019 at 07:57 PM
Anyone (other than me) watching the Canes lose to VT tonight?
So what, if it's a blow out? So what, if we lose all our ACC road games? Coach Larrañaga must be saving the "good stuff" for the ACC tournament. Damn, the Old Man is a genius! Right?

Gotta find a way to take series from the big name opponents to make more of this season and start earning respect again, in spite of doing their jobs vs. all of the little guys. Still, last year they couldn't beat those guys either.

LSU’s men basketball head coach Will Wade was caught on an FBI wiretap, offering to pay a handler to recruit current freshman Devonte Smart. Coach Wade is suspended by AD Joe Alleva, and LSU fans boo the AD? No one is upset at Coach Wade? This is more SEC hypocrisy!
If SEC fans are at a point where they universally endorse openly paying handlers, and such payments are routine and expected of their head coaches, then I think we are at a point where the pretense of amateur college sports should be abandoned.
As some of the bloggers have suggested here, if the major programs aren’t going to respect the amateur athletic rules, it’s time to reform the college system and pay these college athletes who bring revenue to these schools

Bad day if you are a Raider fan like me. I think A. Brown is a good player...but an idiot as a person, a lung cancer for the team, a disrupter and a fool with a horrible haircut. Gruden is also an idiot...he won the SB with Dungeys players and fell off after that. fine announcer...he and his brother suck as coaches. Gruden said Brown hardest worker ever seen...even more than Jerry Rice. What BS.....Brown not even close to rice in any way.
Personally, I hope he gets a knee blown out cause he is a jerk!
Another Pornboy and Potboy.....me guy. I hate me guys wish them worst no matter who they play for.
I would rather be .500 than have morons on my team. All those Steelers are jerks Ben Rapistberger is a jerk, Bell a jerk, Brown a jerk. Despise them...and Tomlin is a jerk who has no ball to control his players to a point of TEAM first!!

9-6 win for the U, in spite of an ugly 9th, giving up 4 and ending the game finally with 2 runners on. Still, a series win over GT at home.

I don't know the specifics, but it has to be close, Native. Regardless, 12-3 beats the pace of last year's 7-8 by a landslide.
