The problem is that they give up so much study time to be a student athlete. These guys put up an insane amount of time crafting their sports skills. It's why it so hard to excel academically for most.

Also Miami is one of the most expensive schools in thy country. What are instate costs at UCF,FSU,UF,FIU,FAU other state schools across the country? Their degrees cost are much lower.

If anything if you are giving these kids "full rides" allow them to just focus on football the first 3-4 years. Then cover their tuition, room and board after their playing eligibility is over. Right now it's too hard to get full use out of their scholarships academically. Let them play ball if they get drafted great if they don't cover all of their expenses after once they are working to earn degrees.

Covering as many degrees as they want is a gift but this current system exploits them. Despite what coaches say everyone knows the sport is the number 1 priority while they are in school. We don't have a blog on the academic component of their "student-athlete" experience. They are being short changed by an industry making billions off of them. What's worse is it isn't necessary. It's just exploitative. To have a guy like Dabo talking about exploitive kids while taking home over 10 million a year is disgusting.

You could take 2 mill per year off his salary and give each FB an extra 2k a month. He would still have 8 per year. Do the base extra compensation for the team and let the best make money from endorsements/boosters whatever.

The NCAA is the bad guy here and the system that holds it up. We can't claim the scholarship is the be all end all compensation when they lose 20-30 hrs of potential study time that devalues their degrees.

HilviewCane a Simple Google Search can answer your questions. But one thing is for sure in life most people want affirmation not information. In the time that some people can write essays on here they could do the same research and have legitimate information to bring to the discussion but instead we get a bunch of nonsense 😂😂 😂😂 😂😂 😂.

See even you acknowledge the cost at most schools isn't the same as UM.

I get the fear of not wanting to lose the joy received from college football.

I hear what you are saying about value in scholarship. There is value.

However in a sense of trying to understand your point of view. Why are you so against ways that can possibly pay the players a bigger piece of the money they make for schools, networks, cable suppliers, advertisers etc. etc.? Why should they be kept at the bottom of the scale for compensation? Why not try to improve the system.

I mean so many of these kids are pushed to major in crap degrees where they will have a hard time finding employment. Their degrees aren't as valuable as we pretend. If they were allowed to get degrees for life I would consider that a form of compromise with value but as it currently works...not so much.

Since most don't make it to the NFL they would probably be better off in most cases going to an in-state school and placing that time spent on the sport focusing on their degrees. Making sure they have good GPAs and marketable skills.

It would be better than short changing their "student" experience to play the sport.

Congratulations Michael Jackson getting drafted by the Dallas Cowboys!

thirstybuzzardcane

For 90% of these college football players getting a full scholarship, room, board, training, coaching, travel, medical care and more is the absolute best possible opportunity and outcome for them.

Nobody is forcing them to play college football.

For every ONE of them that would turn it down there are at least 1000 more who would take that offer in the blink of an eye. To make it seem like the are suffering, being abused or being taken advantage of by the system does not hold water.

Soup gets it! Why do you think the whole Clemson DL came back for their Senior year? It was for the love of the game. They would've been all multi millionaires if they left early

This was never an argument or point of contention. You are oversimplifying the issue.

1. You are assuming that all football players want to go to college to get a degree. I would be willing to bet that upon entering college over half of the football players have NFL dreams and no intention of getting a degree.

2. Secondly, saying that they should just choose a State school because they are cheaper than a private school is not the reason players choose a school because of #1 above. Most choose a school that either gives them a chance at early PT or the chance to showcase their talents on the National stage or has a great winning tradition or a great head coach.

So $265,000 at UM for a 4 year degree PLUS all of the perks and benefits of being on a team (travel, hotels, coaching, weight training, seperate food and nutrition program, medical care and treatment, etc.) does probably come close to $400,00 over 4 years.

You tell me what other job most of these high school grads, many with very limited skills, are going to get that will "pay them" $400,00 over their first 4 years of employment while traveling all over the United States just to play a game that they love?

At this point "people" are going to start making assumptions about the reasons why. Not talent.

TonyCane

86Cane, political forces will ultimately take care of this. Let’s say the Democrats won in 2020. Several candidates are promising free college tuition. With that will come the requisite revenue gathering to pay for it. What will not come is college cost control.

Fast forward another few years. Taxes have gone up, and continue to rise. And Alabama is now paying their new coach Dabo Swiney $25M per year. They’ve also just invested $350M on a new player complex filled with luxuries for the players only. Meanwhile taxes continue to go up to pay for this expenditures. Football, with its health issues, will be a prime target for pressure.

Terrance Sullivan

Wowza Willis didn't get drafted didn't see that one coming.

AfriCane

OMG! They hated on Willis. Anyone with inside info on what happened? One of the top DEs on the number 5 defense in the CFL?
If I were him, I’ll give the middle finger to free agency & the NFL & head to the CFL.

TonyCane

Nor did I. He should have been the first Cane drafted. I’m hoping Miami signs him as a RFA.

solarcane

Let me throw this out.
With 65 players getting another $25,000 a game what do season tickets
go for?

AfriCane

I’m so upset about Willis! WTF???

solarcane

Willis was really working hard to be a better human being. Seems like the NFL public relations folks are holding his feet to the fire no?

AfriCane

Solar, F that! There was a guy that was arrested for a break in. He was dismissed. Went to another school, and still got drafted in the 6th.

AfriCane

Honestly, with Willis not drafted, I don’t think I care for the other guys that were. Willis was the heart of our 5th overall ranked defense last year. I’M HURT DAWG!!

solarcane

Afri
I feel you man I was proud as hell of Willis and Diaz turning his life around.

Herbieibis

Willis not being drafted is a dam travesty. Looks like all teams got together to give him the middle finger. What a joke.

solarcane

Willis signing With the Ravens right now FA
Lewis and Reed must have stood up and bitched

AfriCane

And someone’s going to tell me kaperneck was wrong that NFL teams don’t conspire.

AfriCane

For real solar. Please send link to story.
He’s got to be a priority FA though!

AfriCane

I just really wonder what they were looking at!!

Thanks solar. GMs were sleeping on the job when they didn’t draft GW. It’s just makes no sense. Well, Baltimore got a deal, a steal, and a pissed off cane.
It almost made me cry.
Fock this bullsheet. !!!

Alex D

What's good Legion/Canespace? Long, long, long time no post. The NFL must have got wind on possibly why Willis was suspended for a year or he may have a possibly failed a specific test at the NFL Combines? Something is definitely not right, especially when small school unproven linemen were being selected before him. Just my take. Late.

As long as they have escalator Soup doesn't care how much they go up.

TonyCane

Malik to the 49ers!

Go Canes!!

How in THE HELL did Willis not get drafted.

solarcane

Poor Russel Wilson 140 million for four years, that poor sumbish got robbed not being paid to play college ball. How the hell will he make ends meet?
I wonder when that oh yeah moment comes to people that want college players paid?

solarcane

I WOULDN'T BET AGAINST IT IN 2019

DJ Dallas throws 2 passes to Tate Martell during the season.

KJ Osborne is ACC player of the week before Jeff Thomas or Brevin Jordan

With a game on the line in field goal range we pass to Mallory or Osborne

JCane

One run scored in the 2nd holds up for a 1-0 win over VT for a 30-14 record, 10th straight win over the Hokies and game 3 tomorrow prior to a 3 game set next weekend vs. Bethune Cookman. Pitching has been solid in these two games while the bats have gone to sleep.

Would love to know the real story as to why Willis wasn't picked. Physical skills clearly weren't the reason.

TruCane81

No payment system needed.

Just stop blocking the players that are good enough to get paid off of themselves.

Autograph signings, appearances, endorsements etc...

THIS!

It is difficult to convince most people that these young guys should get a cut of the billion dollar industry built on their talent. Trying to convince them is a lost cause.

But barring players from making their own money is criminal, and the fact people think it is ok alludes to underlying biases I do not wish to stir up discussion of.

If a college freshman on scholarship wants a job or starts an online business profiting from their image, content, or lifestyle there is nothing to stop them, but an athlete loses eligibility for their own ideas and products?

The hypocritical and disingenuous nature of college sports “amateurism” really gets under my skin. For some reason people really hate paying athletes, even though the money is rooted in television advertising. Get millions of people to watch you perform your job every week and you will make the big bucks, too. So much vitriol. I wonder why.......

solarcane

Ok here is another idea, pay them a flat nationwide average salary.

Have them pay ss and income tax.

Have them pay for their own room and board, and a monthly property maintenance fee.
Your company pay your mortgage and grocery bill and mow your lawn?

Have them Pay for 25 percent of their medical. Give them a better deductable
For each season without a claim.

Have them file for workman's compensation if they miss practice or games due to an on the job injury.

Have them pay their own doctor bills for injuries not related to practice or games. Pickup basketball games, screwing around etc.

Withhold a game missed portion of their salary for non team related injuries causing them to miss practice or games.

Have them Pay for their transportation to home games, practice, special events.
Your company pay you to come to the home office everyday?

Have them pay for their transportation
meals and lodging to volunteer work, community service, and place of worship.

Lay them off without pay if game attendance drops below a prior season.

Have them pay income tax on anything they profited on.

Give them a seasonal performance bonus for exceptional work, take out income tax.

Give them raises based on performance.

Pretty much treat them like part of the adult workforce.

solarcane

If we start paying college players because they bring a profit to a college, when do we start paying IMG Academy players.

If you have a concession stand at your high school field how much do you pay your players?

How much does each St Thomas kid get from tee shirt sales?

Surely kids that play in the Little League World Series should get a check from ESPN.

AfriCane

If anyone can get a story from www.theathletic.com. I saw a piece on Twitter that GWIII had a fight with the son of a Raven’s OC when he was in Florida. But I couldn’t read everything because I can’t see the Wole post because a subscription is needed.

I don’t know much about why Willis wasn’t drafted. Seems very odd. There will be a lot of speculation about it because it cannot be explained based on his performance and talent. I thought he would be at least a third round pick.

My guess is that his multiple suspensions in college had something to do with it, and I am sure NFL teams questioned Willis about the suspensions during interviews, and if Willis’s answers weren’t plausible, he will not get drafted. In this era, some of the best NFL players get kicked off of NFL teams due to behavioral issues.

Another oddity is that I read in the Herald that Willis refused to have a group workout with the Dolphins and Willis (or his agent) insisted that the Dolphins spend one of their individual workouts on him. IMO, that probably hurt his draft stock too.

There are a few other issues I could speculate about, but I won’t. I thought some NFL team would take a chance, especially my Dolphins. I was very very wrong about that.
