HilviewCane a Simple Google Search can answer your questions. But one thing is for sure in life most people want affirmation not information. In the time that some people can write essays on here they could do the same research and have legitimate information to bring to the discussion but instead we get a bunch of nonsense 😂😂 😂😂 😂😂 😂.

The problem is that they give up so much study time to be a student athlete. These guys put up an insane amount of time crafting their sports skills. It's why it so hard to excel academically for most.

Also Miami is one of the most expensive schools in thy country. What are instate costs at UCF,FSU,UF,FIU,FAU other state schools across the country? Their degrees cost are much lower.

If anything if you are giving these kids "full rides" allow them to just focus on football the first 3-4 years. Then cover their tuition, room and board after their playing eligibility is over. Right now it's too hard to get full use out of their scholarships academically. Let them play ball if they get drafted great if they don't cover all of their expenses after once they are working to earn degrees.

Covering as many degrees as they want is a gift but this current system exploits them. Despite what coaches say everyone knows the sport is the number 1 priority while they are in school. We don't have a blog on the academic component of their "student-athlete" experience. They are being short changed by an industry making billions off of them. What's worse is it isn't necessary. It's just exploitative. To have a guy like Dabo talking about exploitive kids while taking home over 10 million a year is disgusting.

You could take 2 mill per year off his salary and give each FB an extra 2k a month. He would still have 8 per year. Do the base extra compensation for the team and let the best make money from endorsements/boosters whatever.

The NCAA is the bad guy here and the system that holds it up. We can't claim the scholarship is the be all end all compensation when they lose 20-30 hrs of potential study time that devalues their degrees.

Perfect Pair--SOUPSTER & SOLAR
I've been gone too long. Arrived home in Michigan Thursday. Lots of stress in Florida, of my making. I bought a brand new condo in Satellite Beach. Oceanfront, 2200 sq ft. OCEANA OCEANFRONT CONDOMINIUM. 6th floor, 32 ft. oceanfront balcony, accessible from living room and master bedroom. Or MADAM, MISTRESS bedroom!! Air mattress here I come. My Richard helped me out and used inheritance too. Too much info, I know, but I am a Florida resident and voter now. When I get the deed, I will register it.
Too far from the U and football, but if our dreams come true, and the CANES are in a huge bowl game, I will fly to whatever airport and Tom or another Canespacer can pick me up, and away we go.
I will be happy just to be able to see them on TV.
Hope everyone is well.

Undergraduate Tuition
Tuition for University of Miami is $47,040 for the 2017/2018 academic year. This is 69% more expensive than the national average private non-profit four year college tuition of $27,755. The cost is 230% more expensive than the average Florida tuition of $14,261 for 4 year colleges. Tuition ranks 101st in Florida amongst 4 year colleges for affordability and is the 2nd most expensive 4 year college in the state. Price does not vary by residence.

The school charges an additional fees of $1,444 in addition to tuition bringing the total effective in-state tuition to $48,484.

Housing Costs
On campus room and board is provided by the school at a cost of $13,666 per academic year. Students electing to live off campus elsewhere in Coral Gables should budget at least this amount.

Books and Supplies
The estimated annual cost for books and supplies is $1,000.

Other Living Expenses
If living on-campus, students should budget for $3,124 in additional living expenses. Off-campus students should budget for $3,124 in other miscellaneous living expenses.

Total Costs
The annual tuition and living expense budget to go to University of Miami was $66,274 for the 2017/2018 academic year. The cost is the same for all students regardless of Florida residence status as there is no in-state discount.

86Cane

Projected 4 Year Degree Price
4 Year Sticker Price: $265,096
Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4
$66,274 $68,615 $71,038 $73,547

Based on published tuition prices, we estimate the current cost of a 4 year bachelor's degree and living expenses at University of Miami to be $265,096 - assuming graduation in normal time. The estimation assumes a 3.5% annual increase over the next 4 years which has been the recent trend for this school.

For 90% of these college football players getting a full scholarship, room, board, training, coaching, travel, medical care and more is the absolute best possible opportunity and outcome for them.

Nobody is forcing them to play college football.

For every ONE of them that would turn it down there are at least 1000 more who would take that offer in the blink of an eye. To make it seem like the are suffering, being abused or being taken advantage of by the system does not hold water.

86Cane

Give every college athlete that fulfills predetermined requirements, finish their degree and competes four years eligible for a one time payout AFTER graduating.

Incentivizes graduation, maintains some semblance of amateurism and gives graduates a kick start after they finish.

You guys who don’t want players to get anything more from the mult billion dollar industry created off the sweat and labor off the sweat of their backs care more about how it would affect you not them.

Yep they could but here is the thing. My problem is it being against the rules. Everybody else is getting wined and dined. Coaches are, ncaa officials are, school administrators are. Let's be real the best players often get compensation outside of the boundries anyway. There is no reason to go to Clemson or Saban's car dealership extension football program otherwise.

Allow the kids to get paid and stop victimizing them. Yankees can pay more and don't always win etc.

It's the hypocricsy of the system. EVERYONE ELSE GETS PAID except the players. The greatest value of the scholarship isn't recognized in my opinion because so much possible study time is used for practice. Maybe if the athletes good get free degrees including room and board for life that would be better. Not just tuition but room and board also. Then they would have freetime to study while pursuing degrees later and can actually focus on grades and learn something. The current system is bs.

I think your friend would be an exception to the rule Hill.

Texas boosters could wine and dine potential professional 18 yr old college students and offer twice the money Miami could.

On social media you see
a lot more pictures of kids throwing wads of money around more often than degrees for marine science.

I agree with everyone that coaches are way over paid.
I also think that the college players that people feel sorry for will be making a ton more than they are in 3 years if the players have any talent.

Not necessarily true. My best friend took 1/3rd of his potential salary to live in LA over Eastern Washington state. To live in Miami with some change in your pockets is better than living in most college towns. It's why doctors in Miami, LA, New Yorks etc. often make less than those in smaller towns. Living other places is not nearly as enjoyable.

HillviewCane

90 % of degrees don't even cost 1/4 of that.

A guy like Dabo is a hypocrite. This is the same guy who said.

"But as far as paying players, professionalizing college athletics, that's where you lose me. I’ll go do something else, because there's enough entitlement in this world as it is.” He is making over 10 million a year in salary and endorsements to coach football and is talking about entitlement? It makes Dabo look like an entitled POS.

For me personally the biggest thing for me is the mind blowing hyporcrisy. It's just like coaches wanting to be able to move at will and players having transfer issues. It's a lack of balance and fairness. Not equality but fairness.

Outside of Urban Cryer when is the last time you seen a coach laying in the hospital with health issues from the sport.

These kids work really hard and it's not an amateur sport. Not with all the money being made. We pay kid actors, kid entrepeneurs etc. But these athletes can't even get outside income...in a way that's above board.

It needs to be addressed. Don't know if there is a perfect solution and don't think it has to be perfect but an effort should be made to address it.

BigWindyCane

No Canes drafted in the first three rounds. Jackson and Homer could have benefited from another season in Coral Gables. Lots of dreams smashed today.

IMO, Willis and both Jacksons will go early on Day 3. I still think the Canes have four drafted. Maybe five. But a high number will make NFL rosters because they are better than their record

Herbieibis

I guess beauty is in the eyes of the beholder when it comes to what we think k is talent compared to the NFL. No Canes taken through 3 rounds. Maybe we need to adjust our evaluation on what talent is.
Surely Jackson and Willis should already be gone.

My point is college athletes are making hundreds of millions for coaches, ADs, bowls, TV networks and universities just to name a few.

In a supply and demand society everyone generating that kind of money is compensated accordingly, except college athletes.

In what world is it fair for Dabo to make $10-15 million a year including endorsements and Trevor Lawrence be ineligible and a pariah if a booster buys him a free meal.

Instead assistant coaches are stuffing 10 grand into a pair of sneakers and mailing them to a recruit, risking only the kid’s eligibility, while the HC talks nonsense on TV about amateurism while cashing a $500k a month paycheck.

It’s disgraceful.

Pro franchises only exist in their current form because of corporate socialism. They are not subject to market forces.

When Joe Robbie built Joe Robbie Stadium for the Dolphins he was for a time the owner of one of the most valuable franchises in the NFL.

Nowadays it's a curse for a pro franchise to own their own house. They way they maximize returns today is to have the local municipality build you your house, assume all liability for the house, but garner no return on the investment.

Not sure if you all noticed but when Ross updated Hard Rock with "his own money" (complete B.S. when you factor in the tax abatements that he received) he also "donated" Hard Rock to the city of Miami Gardens. He keeps all the profits, the city assumes all the liability, and when it's time for a new house he can pack up and leave Hard Rock for greener pastures and have a new "sucker" build him a new house.

I give props to San Diego for letting the Chargers go. That community had finally had enough and they told the Chargers to scram.

Sarasota 'cane

One of the big issues I see is we confuse folks who are stewards of other peoples money (Executives of public corps, board members, public officials, school presidents, etc.) with business OWNERS. If you OWN a private business then you can self-regulate because it's your money.

If you are a steward of other peoples money (Public corp, state agency, state schools, etc.) then you are subject to oversight and regulation. The issue as I see it is the foxes are sitting on each others boards and they are regulating each other with a wink, wink.

UM will never be able to pay the money for a HC that a state school pays because they have to use their own money. It's self-regulating.

In the states with D1 football programs the Head Football coaches are the highest paid employees in every state. Doctors/scientists come in 2nd, but in the $500k range.

The problem isn't capitalism or market forces, it's the boards and regulators that have failed us. When I hear people say we need fewer regulations across the board it drives me nuts. Unbridled capitalism will lead to the kleptocracy that we are currently dealing with. The foxes are guarding the hen houses.

I agree that sports salaries are out of control for both players and coaches. Just don't know how to fix it except for a salary cap for teams, players and coaches in all sports? Ideas?

I think at this rate MLB will collapse first followed by NBA and Hockey and lastly NFL.

When it comes to colleges I can't for the life of me understand why the State legislatures don't pass a cap for head coaches salaries at say 5 million. How much does the Governor of South Carolina, Alabama, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Florida Make?

UMike

I'm hoping Enos will play call around our weaknesses and use our talent to move the ball. Not just call the same calls all game hoping they work. Freshman LB's Huff and Brooks will undoubtedly see playing time, and they are good prospects so we will see. Joyner making the move to LB will help as well. But it is an area of concern with debt.

2. Prediction: 9-3 once the injury bug starts to bite.

1. Agreed.

2. Agreed.

Unless the new offense can sustain drives, get more first downs and produces 30+ points/game. Then all bets are off.

IF we come out on the opening drive against UF and drive the ball down the field and score or even if we score on an 60 yard explosive play that they worked on all Summer then you will know that this may in fact be TNM.

IF we come out against the Gators and go three and out the first few drives, punt poorly, give up field position, expose the defense by keeping them on the field the whole game like last year and go down 10-0 then you will know that (for now at least) TNM is just another cute yet meaningless slogan.

Go Canes!!

💯

If Shaq and Pickney hadn’t returned our defensive outlook would be waaay different.

And pray we stay healthy on Defense especially at LB.

LB is huge! Great starters, no backups. I believe I read our LB's will have to play every down. I don't care how we spin this, it will be hard to beat the big boys with bubble gum, bailing wire, and duct tape.

And our offensive line is still "offensive" until they prove otherwise.

Prediction: 9-3 once the injury bug starts to bite.

Go 'canes!!

Lol The Gators are preseason Top 10 so who the Hell is underrating them lol. Come on Man. FSU is a bigger Crap Show than Us so lol on that as well. I hope we win 10 Games but until we get our QB settled and performing better than the past 2 years, Better O-Line Play, Better Special Teams especially Punter and Place Kicking, Get our Turnovers down again. We have turned the Ball way too much the last 2 seasons. Do those things and Yes we can win 10 or more Games. And pray we stay healthy on Defense especially at LB.

I think the Gators and FSU will both be better than many think. We should win at least 10 though.
