Hurricane Fans,
We have officially completed another successful season at The U!
Thirteen of our 18 programs advanced to NCAA postseason play. Our women's indoor track and field team won the ACC title for the third time in four seasons. Two Hurricanes captured individual NCAA championships – Michelle Athlerley in the women's indoor pentathlon and Estela Perez-Somarriba in women's tennis. In addition, two UM divers – David Dinsmore and Briadam Herrera – placed second at the NCAA Championships.
Overall, Hurricane student-athletes earned four ACC Player of the Year honors, 68 All-ACC selections, 11 individual ACC titles and 35 All-America accolades. Randy Ableman was named ACC Men's and Women's Diving Coach of the Year and Amy Deem was named ACC Indoor Track & Field Women's Coach of the Year.
Our accomplishments are a tribute to the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes, coaches and staff, as well as the continued support we receive from donors, alumni and fans to make it all possible.
We're just two months away from the launch of the new ACC Network, which will provide us with a tremendous platform to help promote and showcase our teams, our student-athletes and our University to a wide audience. Two of our first three football games will be televised on ACCN -- our conference opener at North Carolina on Saturday, Sept. 7, as well as our home opener against Bethune-Cookman on Saturday, Sept. 14.
Last week ACCN announced its broadcast schedule for fall Olympic sports, including UM's soccer and volleyball programs. Our home soccer game against Pittsburgh on Sunday, September 29 will be on ACCN at 7 p.m. Two Canes volleyball games – Wednesday, October 30 at Florida State and Friday, November 15 at home against NC State – will also be televised on ACCN.
Multiple providers have already agreed to carry ACCN, including DIRECTV, Fios, Google Fiber, Hulu, Optimum and PlayStation Vue. But there are still providers that haven't yet decided to carry the network, including Comcast, Dish, AT&T U-Verse and Spectrum. I encourage Canes fans to visit getaccn.com to see if their provider is planning to carry the network. If not, they should call that provider and demand ACCN! We want everybody to be able to watch every Canes game for every sport this coming season.
In addition to her thrilling national championship triumph, Estela also won the prestigious Honda Sport Award for Tennis, presented annually by the Collegiate Women Sports Awards for the past 43 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA-sanctioned sports. Estela is the fourth student-athlete in Miami history to win the elite award, including the third tennis player. Congratulations to Estela on her remarkable season!
Jim Larrañaga added Bill Courtney to his staff last week as an assistant coach. Bill, a former head coach at Cornell, most recently served as an assistant at DePaul, and he has also coached at Bowling Green, George Mason, Providence, Virginia and Virginia Tech. Welcome to Coral Gables, Bill!
Three Hurricane greats will have their names on the 2020 ballot for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame. Defensive lineman Jerome Brown and linebackers Ray Lewis and Dan Morgan are among the 76 players and five coaches from FBS included on the ballot. The announcement of the 2020 Class will be made in January in New Orleans. Congratulations to all three men and their families on this tremendous honor!
We are excited to announce that both of our basketball teams are going on a 10-day tour of Italy in August. The men's tour (August 9-18) includes visits to Rome, Florence and Como, while the women's trip (August 7-16) features stops in Rome, Florence and Venice. The men will play four games and the women will play three, with each team having at least one game per stop.
While our Greentree Practice Fields were being resurfaced, all of our on-campus spring football practices took place in the beautiful Carol Soffer Indoor Practice Facility. I want to again extend my heartfelt thanks to Carol Soffer and her family for the lead gift for this magnificent facility. We have already raised more than $38 million but are not done yet -- and we still need your support. Your donations will ensure that this facility continues to be one of the best in the country. Visit Give2IPF.com to pledge your support.
For the latest information on each of our varsity teams, please be sure to visit HurricaneSports.com or follow us on Twitter @MiamiHurricanes. I hope your summer is off to a wonderful start and I hope you enjoy this month's magazine!
Go Canes!

Of course I have Spectrum, the worst cable provider by far of all the crappy providers.
FIOS has the best network and the worst customer service, Comcast has the best repair service, decent network, but the most criminal bait and switch billing, and then there's Spectrum...a turd in a punch bowl. The worst by far.

DIRECTTV here in north Georgia Sota.
Good service, competitive prices I can't complain. Having Canes sports and ACC stuff available big plus for sure.
Posted by: solarcane | June 27, 2019 at 03:10 PM
I'm in an apartment right now or I might switch to Direct TV. The big issue with Direct TV in Florida is it cuts out when it rains, and it always seems to rain during "the big game".
I was in a bar in Sarasota one Sunday watching NFL games and the TV's were dropping like flies during a storm!
Once 5G rolls out we should at least have an added layer of competition. My apartment has an exclusive with Spectrum, but Comcast is available in the neighborhood. I'm sure (I know) they are getting a kickback for the monopoly.
If we had true free market competition I have no doubt the U.S.A. would have the best networks in the world.

Sota,
Yea I have had to go out and scoop snow out of the dish a couple times.
Direct mounts most of their dishes on poles about 5 ft off the ground here to avoid law suits from the good ol SEC boys toppling off their trailers into the bass pond.

I have Spectrum but was much better when under the Brighthouse name. Every service has its pros and cons. I have been looking to cut cable for along time and PS Vue seems to be the best option for me.Just need to pull that trigger soon.....
I wonder if Apple TV will carry the ACCNW.....

Raize Yea I would go with Playstation Vue as Well.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | June 28, 2019 at 10:58 AM
So if you get the Core package with Playstation Vue for $49/month, do you still need to add the sports pack for an extra $10? It looks like most of the sports channels are already there so I'm confused why you would need to add a sports package.
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | June 28, 2019 at 02:59 PM
SaraSota I doubt you would Brotha. I expect the 49 Dollar Core Package will Cover It. Just Sign Up for it around August 21st. Thats what I plan to do.

Speaking of satellite dishes, did any of you have one of those giant Home dishes back in the 1980s? Just curious what you picked up. There’s house about three miles from me nestled in the woods that still has an old giant dish embedded in the ground. Wonder if it still works?
Posted by: TonyCane | June 28, 2019 at 06:44 PM
Tony Cane hey probably still do.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | June 28, 2019 at 06:49 PM
So I'm doing the Playstation Vue Core Package free trial for 5 days, $49/month after that. I'm running it on my Roku on my big TV and I like it!
It's got every sports channel plus all the regional sports channels. It sets up local and regional based on zip code.
It's also got a DVR, and I'm playing it through an AV receiver so all the Dolby surround stuff seems to be working fine. With the ACC Network launching soon this seems like a great alternative for cord cutting Hurricane fans!
I think the cost savings is negligible, but I can't wait to shift my TV money away from Spectrum. It's got a lot of sports, but for some reason the NFL Redzone is an add-on. Not a big loss since the NFL Network is included.

Posted by: 86Cane | June 30, 2019 at 07:43 PM
Here is a secret on WR patterns:
1. U never just try to run AWAY from the defender.
2. You try to run AT them, get them "wrong-footed" and then break and accelerate away from them.
Write it down, take a look around...

Five members of the University of Miami women's tennis team earned All-ACC Academic Team distinction, as announced Friday afternoon by the conference office.
Headlining the group is Estela Perez-Somarriba, who received ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year recognition. She is joined on the list by Daevenia Achong, Ana Madcur, Lucia Marzal and Daniella Roldan, as Miami had the second-most honorees of any school.
34700
"Estela is as successful off the court as she is on," Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. "She truly embodies what it means to be a committed student-athlete at the highest level."
Perez-Somarriba is the fourth Miami player to earn the league's top scholar-athlete plaudit, joining Stephanie Wagner (2015), Bianca Eichkorn (2010, 2011) and current associate head coach Laura Vallverdu (2009).
A Hurricane has claimed the award in five of the 12 years it has been presented, three more than any other program. Perez-Somarriba is the fourth player to win ACC Player of the Year and ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the same season, joining North Carolina's Hayley Carter (2016, 2017), Eichkorn (2011) and Georgia Tech's Kristi Miller (2008).

Del Castillo Adds Two Freshman All-America Honors
Jun 28, 2019
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Miami Hurricanes' rookie Adrian Del Castillo picked up a pair of Freshman All-America honors on Friday, appearing on the Baseball America 2019 College Baseball Freshman All-American Team and the D1 Baseball Freshman All-America Team.
Selected as the first team designated hitter by both publications, the versatile Del Castillo's impressive offensive numbers helped him distinguish himself as one of the top freshmen in the country. The complete 2019 Baseball America Freshman All-America Team can be found HERE, while D1 Baseball's Freshman All-America Team can be found HERE.
His selection by Baseball America and D1 Baseball give Del Castillo four Freshman All-America distinctions. He also was named a Perfect Game Freshman All-American and was joined by right-handed pitcher Slade Cecconi on the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Freshman All-America Team. Del Castillo was also named ABCA All-Region, adding to the bevy of honors collected following an excellent freshman campaign.

Redding comes aboard DE Analea leaves. Continues a trend for us. Never seen a team have so many kids decomits year after leave.
Posted by: Herbieibis | June 30, 2019 at 09:31 PM
I have a theory about this decommitment, which I will share here.
First, Analea changed schools at least three times in the last year. I noticed that a couple of high-profile recruits from Carol City have done this over the last couple of years. This changing schools could be a red flag, even if his transferring is unrelated to academics.
Second, in the case of Analea, I am not sure if he dropped the Canes or the Canes dropped him. I also see new DE commits (Quentin Williams from NC) and targets (Chantz Williams, a top 100 recruit from Orange Park, FL) coming in this class, so it appears that the Canes are not missing a beat to say the least.
Third, South Florida is generally loaded every year with 4-5 star recruits, and the NFL ranks are loaded with players who played high school in South Florida. The numbers speak for themselves.
College coaches at major programs see these trends, and successful programs send their coaches down to recruit year-round. The major programs really start pressuring the local recruits they want at the end of the junior season and beginning of the senior season. Many of these competing programs have been more successful on the field recently than the Canes.
IMO, many of the highly talented local South Florida recruits commit to the Canes early because the Canes might be the first major program to offer them. The Canes enjoy the early advantage of location and proximity to these recruits, but when the other major programs like Alabama, Georgia, OSU and the like start recruiting them, it is tough to keep them in the fold when the Canes finished 7-6 last season, and the highest drafted player in 2019 was the fourth round. I say this because most of the decommits over the last few years have been local.
Fourth, I don't think the local coaches, influencers, parents and programs are interested in steering players to play for Miami. I think there may be many reasons for this, but I noticed that other major programs have gained a foothold, and the local coaches seem to welcome the attention.
That said, CMD is doing a great job with #TNM, and his staff is recruiting well. Right now, CMD has 14 of his 18 commits from Florida, although not all from South Florida. In addition, CMD has shown that he is willing to go to NC, Georgia or Texas to find high-quality players when the local recruits are balking.
The only way CMD is going to consistently win these recruiting battles with the major programs is to win games on the field this season and put players in the NFL. If the Canes are successful on the field, they will get almost any recruit they want.
With this 2019 schedule, the Canes really should be 11-2 or 10-3, at worst this season. Anything less, and we will see defections of local commits again before NSD.

One issue with Playstation vue is they do not have a contract with Viacom so you do not have A&E, Comedy Central, MTV, etc. Saw some forums that they will be coming, but there is no ETA.
Also the local stations decide whether to allow Vue to broadcast their programming, and as such NBC in the Tampa Bay area is not available (Because of Comcast). Now all the NBC cable channels are available so I do not think you will miss any football games as NBCSports is available. You can watch college football and Sunday Night NFL football on that channel, but if you watch TV shows on NBC Network you will need an antenna, if the signal is available.
With that said this is a great sports streaming service for football. You get all the sports channels to include All the ESPN channels, FS1 and FS2, CBSSports, NBCSports, Big 10, SEC, and the new ACC network. And in Florida you get both FoxSports regional channels. There are also 2 MLB channels, and an NBA channel.

Also no PBS on Playstation vue, but you can watch that channel on their app for free on your streaming device.
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | July 01, 2019 at 11:04 AM
SaraSota Fire Up The Antenna to get all local channels and PBS etc. In The Tampa Bay Market you will probably get around 60-80 Channels over the Air. Heck I get 40 Channels over the Air here in The Montgomery Market which is much much smaller than the Tampa Bay Market.

We don't need a roster full of 5 Stars to beat this year’s schedule.
We have more talent than anyone we’ll play in the Coastal by a ridiculous margin. We just beat FSU back to back years with our QBs completing about 40% of their passes.
UF will be the best team we play.
No excuses.

Posted by: CGNC | July 01, 2019 at 02:52 PM
Sarasota, Go and CGNC,
I agree 100%. The Canes have higher ranked recruiting classes than any of its opponents on the current schedule. Maybe UF and FSU are close, but no other opponent is in the same ball park.
The Canes schedule this season is favorable. Only one higher ranked opponent, and Virginia Tech, and Virginia at home. If the Canes finally play up to their expectations and their recruiting class rankings, the Canes should have 10+ wins, the Coastal Championship and a Top 25 ranking this season. I know it is a lot of pressure to put on a first year Coach Manny Diaz, but these are the facts.

Posted by: nemo2002 | July 01, 2019 at 06:43 PM
Can UM beat Clemson this year? Maybe...
Will UM beat Clemson if they meet in the ACCCG? Not likely!
10 wins and a spot in the ACCCG would be a phenomenal season for Manny in his 1st year as HC. And it's doable.
