Terrance for the WIN!

raizecane

outstanding......

BigWindyCane

Latest generation of former Canes having a solid summer league. Lonnie Walker looks good and is ready to take the next step. Bruce Brown got the second triple double in the history of summer league games, and Dewan Hernandez also had a double double. It looks like three former teammates have a chance to make the NBA. Not many programs can boast of that

solarcane

The changes James is referring to are the new offensive coaching staff, the major impact Feeley has made in the weight room and conditioning and making several new hires to the recruiting staff.

I like everything I see this off-season. But the real test will begin in about 6 weeks, in Orlando on August 24th.

I feel pretty good about the Canes front 7. The LBs and DLs should be a strength. I saw them practice, and they look pretty impressive.

With the exception of Bandy, the DBs are first-time starters and they will have to stop Franks and a pretty good corps of WRs at UF.

Our starting QB (who I think will be Perry) will have to execute the offense and avoid mistakes. The starter for that first game will be thrown in the fire, and if he doesn't succeed, there are others waiting to step in and take the reigns. With the exception of Donaldson (#55) and Scaife (#51), the Canes OL will have first-time starters. Corey Gaynor had one start as a freshman, so I don't really count that. IMHO, Coach Barry and OC Enos will develop a game plan that does not expose the new starters on the OL, and takes advantage of their strengths.

The running backs should be phenomenal this season, if healthy. Dallas is returning and should improve, and Harris and Lingard will be threats to take it to the house every time they touch the rock.

Jordan and Mallory are future NFL TEs, and I think Thomas and the WRs will step up. But it all depends on QB play.

The true test starts on August 24, and I can't wait.

solarcane

Windy,
With the four plays Richt called last year, and the center had to call the formations when Perry was in because the coaches didn't trust him,

The more I read about Martell watching more film than Perry and Williams

The fact that Martells high school coach had him read defenses in high school and Perry freelanced when his first guy wasn't open

and it seems to me Diaz really likes how Martell carries himself

I get the feeling Tate will start against Florida.

CGNC

Solar - I am with you - they were talking on sports radio (QAM) the other day and basically the person they had on said that Tate has the offense down.

solarcane

CGNC,
Hi!
Enos said he wants his qb to be a leader and a coach on and off the field.
I think Williams seems a bit introverted and shy. Perry doesn't seem to have the confidence and dedication it takes.

I thinks its Martell then Van Dyke, then some kid in the 8th grade somewhere in Georgia or California right now.jmo

Great to see you around

Tate roiling our to Jordan - TD
Tate - quick pass over the middle to Jett Thomas - TD
Tate - quick screen to ‘fill in the blank’ (lingard, cam, Dallas) - TD

Aero,
Cool,

thirstybuzzardcane

Tate's legs will win him the job. I think any of the QB's will be good under Enos. I'm not too worried about the QB position!

I don't think Perry will be able to line people up fast enough in Enos multi formation offense'
I don't think he will change the plays to the defense.

I think Perry is a better passer than Tate, but the most telling thing to me is this:

Tate came AFTER Enos was here, that tells me Enos didnt think any of the current guys could run his offense.

Go Canes!!

Posted by: solarcane | July 15, 2019 at 10:38 AM

Very true. Regardless of what happens, it’s refreshing to have three legit options instead of what the backup situation has been here since about when moved from the OB.

BigWindyCane1

I really want the best QB to win. IMO, Perry is the QB to beat because by what I have observed, read and heard, Perry was ahead of Martell and Williams coming out of spring practice.

But Martell and Williams will be given every chance to win the job, and if they are better, I hope they will. It appears each QB has his strengths and weaknesses, but nothing is stagnant. Under a good OC like Enos and weapons like the Canes have, average QBs can thrive.

With Enos as OC, I am not concerned about who starts, because Enos will have this offense ready to score points when the season starts.

There will be a lot of pressure on the starter on August 24th. The UF game is a high-pressure game, and it isn't a time to learn what we have. The UF game will be the fire, just like the LSU game was last season. Whoever starts will be under fire, and if the starter doesn't perform, there will be fans calling for the backup to start the following week against UNC.

herbieibis

The smarter QB will start not necessarily the most talented, a game manager if you will.
The Herb is still sticking to 24-23, DA U! First game jitters and a new system is not a recipe for an offensive explosion the first game.

solarcane

I got a lot more confidence in Enos knowing which Qb is the guy than I did with CMR and son.

Manny probably has a 75% idea of who starts but the later the Gators know anything the better.

I think the guy that knows the offense and can get us into the best play will start over the best passer or runner too Herb.

AeroCane

This is the reason most of us are saying Tate
Williams will Never be a starter at the U - he can not perform under pressure Jmo
Perry is Perry but Tate has the ‘it’ factor and will get the ball to the key offensive weapons!

Old Skool

He can not perform under pressure

Posted by: AeroCane | July 15, 2019 at 07:44 PM

TWSS
However, judging from the drop-dead gorgeousness of his girlfriend, one guy who can perform under pressure is Tate. Perhaps Brazilian women have a sixth sense for great quarterbacks (See Gisele Bundchen) and Tate's lady has decided to make a long term investment. Lucky guy! Great development for the players and McKinney. They should do more of that. The OL need all the help they can get. It’s a positive sign that they reached out to him, and that he responded. Hopefully, it becomes an offseason habit. I hope this pays dividends. OL Need to be ready for 8/24. Don’t want another LSU-type opening performance

From what I heard, Perry has been leading the QB battle all off season. Behind the scenes, it's a situation where Williams or Martell have to beat Perry out. The whole all 3 are even is public "coach speak".

Apparently, current and former players had written Perry off after last season. Then, his work ethic and preparation for spring basically shocked the program. The word is he's kept it up since.

If I were a betting man, I would put my money on Perry...

TIFWIW

CoCane

Remember this is what I "heard"

Martell
Mostly looks good from the shotgun and still isn't consistent with that either. Accuracy isn't as bad as Rosier but only marginally better. The most shifty runner of the QB's.

Williams
Accurate and super talented passer. Folds under pressure though. Throws too many interceptable passes when things breakdown. Good but not elite arm strength.

Perry
Not quite as accurate as Williams. Not as shifty as Tate on the run but can break it open with strait line speed. Calm under pressure, arm strength, measurables and better preparation has kept him ahead.

I got the feeling Perry is the starter, it just hasn't been announced yet...

86Cane

Posted by: CoCane | July 16, 2019 at 08:31 AM

This is what I read and heard too. Martell is listed at 5'10", and Tyler Murray showed that height doesn't always matter as much as it used to, but I am not sure if Martell is the same thrower that Murray is. But Martell might be the best runner at the QB position that the Canes have ever had.

IMO, Williams has a stronger arm than Perry, and he is not as good on deep throws. Williams seems to be more consistently accurate in drills, especially when he is not being rushed. Another issue with Williams is that when the play is live, he doesn't seem to be as ready as Martell and Perry, although does seem to be improving.

Based on what I see, Perry is the starter but if Martell or Williams can beat him out, so be it. I don't have a rooting interest because they are all Canes, but Perry appears to be the most talented, and more capable of running the full playbook in terms of passing and running. Perry can make all the throws.

Terrance Sullivan

Well we will know the answer one way or the other a month from now. All I know our QB, OL, WR, and ST has to get better or we will be 7-6 again IJS.

CoCane

BWC,

I talk to a couple of former players that I grew up with from time to time. Perry has the biggest arm. That's not an opinion but a fact. Apparently, Perry makes throws that Jarren and Tate can't. Jarren is the most accurate and text book when it comes to throwing. Jarren's biggest problem is remaining poised when the bullets are flying.
I don't know all of the circumstances. Maybe Perry's live game experience is an advantage. That doesn't mean Enos and Diaz won't pick 1 of the other 2, projecting they'll settle down after taking some lumps. It just sounds like Perry is that dude. We'll see

BigWindyCane1

When Frank Gore terrorized Florida high school football

419 yds in one game, couple thousand yds rushing season

Smh

Oct 2000
Coral Gables running back Frank Gore continues his rampage over opposing defenses.

Gore smashed three more Miami-Dade County records in a 34-14 win over District 11-6A foe Southwest a week ago in a makeup game at Tropical Park. Included in that game were touchdown runs of 56, 42 and 51 yards.

Gore's 419 yards in that game bettered his mark of 377 that came in the season opener against South Miami. Before this season, former Palmetto star Markeith Cooper held the record with 361 against Braddock in 1995.

Gore also set records for all-purpose yards in a game (474) and rushing yards in a regular season (and he took only seven games to accomplish it). In putting his name on the all-purpose yardage record, Gore also surpassed Cooper, who managed 434 against Braddock -- 361 rushing, 56 on kickoff returns and 17 on punt returns. Gore had 55 receiving yards against Southwest on top of his 419 rushing yards.

Gore has rushed for 1,915 yards on 193 attempts. That already puts him well ahead of Cooper, who gained 1,886 in 10 games.

The Cavaliers standout also looks to have a good shot at the mark for yards in a season including the playoffs. Miami Southridge graduate Darren Davis ran for 2,401 in 15 games in 1994, and his brother, Troy, rushed for 2,211 with a county-high 34 touchdowns in 15 games in 1993.

Great post Solar. The Davis brothers were legends, but Frank Gore was the best high school RB I have ever seen. Gore was obviously productive, but he always had incredible instincts and unparalleled vision, and this was before his knee injuries. Gore was also a hard worker. He was better than Cook, Duke, Magahee and any other South Florida HS running back I have seen.

Hopefully, he will be in the NFL HOF soon.

So according to your logic lets say we beat Florida and Florida State and beat Bethune Cookman yet lose the rest of our Games and go 3-9 and have the worst record at UM since the last year of Carl Selmer in 1976(3-8) and the first year of Lou Saban in 1977(3-8).
