With The Swiss Cheese Gang up front and Turf Face Jr. Commanding the rear I'm starting to rethink my 11-1, 10-2 knee deep in the hoopla predictions.

CGNC

VA - LOL - the O-line (tackles) and QB were one and the same - neither did the other any favors

But i thought I saw Native hanging with the UF band leader for a bit....

LOL +1

VA Cane

Who was saying earlier this summer that we were ready for Clemson? That would be a massacre. I think if we get to that point to have to play them for ACC....forfeit the game.....we are miles from that level at this point. The OL is going to be a big problem all year....you just cannot win with that kind of play. If you were a back or QB...or WR....seeing that line play....would you even consider coming here? It kills your skill position recruiting...cause they know they will get dusted.

raizecane

One of my regrets is not hooking up with fellow canespacers at the game. But i thought I saw Native hanging with the UF band leader for a bit....

VA Cane

The sloppy stuff really bother me. Poor blocking technique....10 sacks...shame. False starts, delay of game, holding, missed chipper fg, fumble, 4th down conversions, poor tackling...lot of arm tackling, yapping, talking in the huddle.....just unacceptable. I can accept getting beat....but the sloppiness and apathy FB....NO!
They were mine, I would have got off the bus put pads back on and run their asses off....getting beat is one thing...not giving a damn is WRONG!!!
Run those clowns into the ground Sunday....then move on!!!

VA Cane

Very disappointing. The blocking we knew would be bad. Stupid penalties what is new? We used to get them in the heyday, but either overcame them or were so far ahead it was nothing. That is not the deal now. Fumble, missed kick, holding penalty in RZ really hurt.Ugly football!!!!!
Blades may think he is a BA....he is not. He tackle poorly....he missed big on that stupid first TD....had we been alert on ST it dont happen...and 7 dont look like the fool he is. His penalty at the end for USLC....just stupid. Calling him out...grown up and learn to tackle....and shut yo mouf!!!
D leaders 3 LBs not ready too slow to fill!!!
Only positive was no quit...still not a lot different since Fiesta....same Miami except the kids kept plugging.....move on to UNC!!!

You can tell the blob sidtards so easy these last few seasons by who's trying to spin the most to sell the future since the past is still dried up.

Poor Darryl can't even crack a joke at how poor the opener was played by Miami without getting dogpiled by the top tier posters anymore, it's going to be an even longer season if gallows humor isn't allowed to fly here!

windy,
I saw Osborne and Martell open short a couple times. I'm sure Thomas was open deeper but Jarren was on his back by the time that happened.

I still feel the stars got in a few of our younger receivers eyes and college is a lot tougher than they thought.
Their coach said he isn't coaching their talent he is coaching their technique.

I agree 100%. Not sure who makes the decision to play/not play WRs, whether its Stubbs, Enos or CMD himself, but I didn't understand the rotation. I did notice that on offense, fewer players were rotated in across the board, whereas the defense played their two deep.

The criticism has focused on Martel's 15 snaps, but JT dropped a TD, Osborne fumbled, Harley had one catch and couldn't make anything happen and it otherwise was an underwhelming day from all the WR corps that did play a lot of snaps. I really didn't see a #1 WR on the field on Saturday, but maybe that will change as the season progresses. I remember when Ahmmon Richards was a freshman, and it took several games before Kaaya and the coaches realized that Richards, not Coley, was the true #1 WR. As a matter of fact, defenses realized it before Kaaya did, but once he did, the offense became more prolific.

Also, the Canes WRs were going up against two future NFL corners in Henderson and Wilson. In addition, Jarren had his first start and failed to connect with JT when he was open a couple of times.

That said, it does seem that Stubbs could rotate his group more, especially when the starters are underwhelming. I am hoping he does rotate more WRs starting Sept. 7, so we can see what Wiggins, Pope, Hightower and Payton can do.

Go Canes !!

I don't think he was hard on him inasmuch as he was honest about his play. He did not come out and say this loss is Jarren's fault, rather he pointed out all the mistakes that need correcting which apparently are not evident in the practices. He is the starting QB. He can either handle that kind of critigue or he can't, if he can't then..... Like Soup says, lead, follow or get out of the way.

If anyone pointed fingers about how the game was lost it was Diaz who called out the defense for actually losing the game.

Thanks again CMR for never playing JW15 last year.

1. PFF graded Donaldson out with a 87.8 pass blocking grade. It appears Donaldson is thriving at his natural position.

2. With Gaynor and Scaife also grading at 62.6 respectively, it appears the Canes don’t have an offensive line problem, the Canes have an offensive tackle problem.

Hard to argue against this post.

BigWindyCane

Enos was hard on Jarren at the press conference, and he didn’t sugar coat his mistakes. IMHO, Enos’s harsh criticism leads me to believe that Jarren is his guy. He is putting pressure on him to get better because he knows he can play better.

This is what a lot of good position coaches do, although they usually do it privately rather than publicly. IMHO, if Enos didn’t think Jarren had potential to be good, he would either coddle him or replace him without criticizing him. Enos and Jarren will work hard to get this offense fixed.

Posted by: CoCane | August 26, 2019 at 10:07 PM

💯

The freshmen offensive tackles are the glowing weakness on the team right now, but that won’t last forever. They can and must improve. But I also believe that the Canes need some improvement in every position on offense and special teams, and the defense can also improve. For example, CMD pointed out that Redwine and Jaquan would have made the tackle on Toney’s long TD run, and would have intercepted or deflected that long throw by Franks to Hammond near the end of the game. CMD referred to Jaquan as the eraser. Hall and Carter might be more talented, and may have a higher ceiling, but they will have to grow up quick.

Overall, the talent is there and I believe Jimmy Johnson is right in his assessment that this team will be better by the end of the season under this coaching staff.

BigWindyCane

Enos said at press conference that Williams was responsible for 5 of the 10 sacks. Missed a lot of wide open receivers as well.......said his QB play was "uncharacteristic" from how he practiced.

herbieibis

I think in laymen terms, he's saying it ain't always going to be this way, so enjoy the bumpy ride until new tar gets laid down, which will be just in time for the season opener against Bama in 2021. The big key though, can he be a finisher in recruiting. We all know The U's albetros has been the line play and being able to recruit quality.
Next year will be a little rough, as we have to replace Pink, Shaq, McCloud and Romeo. looks like Steed and Bradley have a long road back and that's an If, so our LB's will be greenhorns.

solarcane

herb,
You could tell when Diaz was saying one day these guys will be sophomores that he knows after all the good and bad this season, Clemson is going to beat us by what ever they feel fitting and next year we might beat a good team once in awhile.

raizecane

Enos said at press conference that Williams was responsible for 5 of the 10 sacks. Missed a lot of wide open receivers as well.......said his QB play was "uncharacteristic" from how he practiced.

herbieibis

I believe Coach Diaz is sinking or swimming with these starters and we either win with them or we are losing but the outcome will be for the betterment of the team down the road. Being a former coach, I love the attitude, may not make the fans happy, but this team in the end will be better for it. Got to grow up sooner or later and the message here is step up or get stepped on.

herbieibis

Solar,
They had the Deon Sanders syndrome.

herbieibis

Looks like no changes yet on the Oh line per Diaz. I guess it's the school of hard knocks for Nelson, Campbell and of course the beneficiary of this learning on the job is Williams. He'll learn to start grabbing some face mask and telling them to block.

I think Williams has a great shot at most sacks in a season if he concentrates.
I got a feeling we are gonna see a few balls thrown 10 rows up in the seats next game just to keep Enos from running on the field and strangling him.

Turf Face was a hopeless romantic and bona fide Lady Killer in his Walter Mitty universe. I think Williams actually wants to be Big Man On Campus

Posted by: CGNC | August 26, 2019 at 03:02 PM

I don't really think it is because it's been a while and Ralph's overlooking a few key things into why those predecessors are probably going to end up the worse duo. Their lines were better by several margins compared to the two current ones Perry and Williams have had blocking for them first of all. Skill position talent was down though for Turf Face and Jitters which just brought out the ample plethora of worse in both of them. Also, while Perry has social media use issues just like Turf Face, he at least shows some potential to this point, while Williams is slightly less of a quitter than Jitters so far. Marve/Harris is probably the better QB duo comparison that's fairer to the current roster but it is tough to argue too hard against it also because it takes a lot of bad play to break a Turf Face single game sack record admittedly! Guessing the starter job is open against the always tough 'bye' opponent this week.

Posted by: CGNC | August 26, 2019 at 03:03 PM

Oh come on, only five of them on the first TD UF scored, that's not even more than half the defense! If only there was somebody in charge of teaching all these seniors on defense on down the roster these last few seasons on the staff who could have coached them up better on how to bring the ball carrier down, that would have fixed that problem, now who could have been responsible for that at Miami under the previous regime, hmmmmm . . .

Terrance Sullivan

Herb Yes Me and UMike will be there. I totally understand if you cant make it I will be at Duke Game as well so We can link up there if you cant make UNC Game!

herbieibis

The catch in the end zone would have been a tough one but the good WR's haul that in. Ball thrown before he turn his head, no doubt TD but it was thrown a little late.
Thought Williams played about as good as expected. Took a beating like Francois did against Bama a few years ago.

WR routes have to be sharper. Glad Enos pissed. Hell this is game we should have won. Just got to get over the dam hump of losing road games against good teams and also playing like slobs.

All fixable stuff but a lot of leaks to plug.

Looking at Rivals recruiting because that is what The Herb loves to do, as of right now our favorite teams, Clemson, LSU, Georgia, Bama and OSU have a combined total of 39 of the top 100 players and counting.

herbieibis

Tee, don't know yet about the game. I can go but have to work the next day. Only 3:15 from home but being at 8 and getting home 2:30-3, just don't know yet. U going. Would love to meet some of U guys. Definetly going to Duke.

Sarasota 'cane

We knew we had o-line issues going in. IMO the the 3 glaring Special Teams gaffes (fake punt, muffed punt return, and missed FG) cost us the game. Those 3 gaffes cost us 17 points in a game decided by 4 points! That's what I'm struggling with today. For all our weaknesses UM lost on 3 coachable mistakes.

Those ST problems and penalties can be fixed, the o-line problems are going to linger for at least another season or 2.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda...

Posted by: solarcane | August 26, 2019 at 12:36 PM

Martell reminds me of Edelman or Berrios

BigWindyCane1

JT is good, but the Canes really haven't had a #1 receiver since Ahmmon Richards, and perhaps also Berrios in terms of being capable of making plays for your QB and your team.

JT's muffed punt was obviously critical, and the dropped TD catch is what your #1 receiver is supposed to make, even against Henderson. This was the type of game against a rival where legends can be made. There are few opportunities, and you have to make the most out of those opportunities when they present themselves.

As far as the other receivers like Harley, Pope, Hightower, etc., it is hard to catch the ball when you are not in the game and you are not targeted.

As was mentioned here on this blog and also by both CMD and Enos, there were a few deep throws and checkdowns that were there, and those were not made for a variety of reasons. Whether it was the QB didn't see it, held on to the ball too long or (as more often the case) the tackles allowed a pressure or a sack. All of that played a role.

Frankly, I have never been a big fan of JT's attitude, but he is talented. I am pulling for JT but I need to see more before I label him a true #1 WR. The season is long and he will be given his opportunity to shine.

Aside from Osborne, all them WR's need to step up. We have all this speed and so called talent and yet they can't get open. Maybe they were but Williams had somebody in his grill all night long. According to PFF, true freshman left tackle Zion Nelson allowed seven quarterback pressures while right tackle John Campbell allowed six quarterback pressures. Nelson committed one penalty on the night. PFF gave Nelson a 1.4 (out of 100) pass blocking grade. Nelson did earn a 55.8 run blocking grade.

Campbell wasn’t much better at right tackle, according to PFF, being called for three penalties. Campbell’s pass blocking grade was a 43.7.

On the positive side according to PFF, Donaldson did not allow a single pressure for the entire game. PFF graded Donaldson out with a 87.8 pass blocking grade. It appears Donaldson is thriving at his natural position.

With Gaynor and Scaife also grading at 62.6 respectively, it appears the Canes don’t have an offensive line problem, the Canes have an offensive tackle problem.

raizecane
so its 2:45 AM and I just got home from the game......All I can say is it was a damn home game for Florida with about 50K fans there.....But Canes were represented....I was stuck in the middle of Gator country and did my best not beating the crap out of some of them....phucking idiots. But a couple of them told me I was pretty cool....and I was like "you fuckers are so lucky".

Anyway, I am proud the way we played and the future is bright.
