I'm with Terrance. Beat UNC. I'm glad we have an extra week to prepare. We can fix a lot of what went wrong on Saturday before the UNC game.

Go 'canes!!

Yes Sir

MLAlumni1970

Will the game be televised in Florida in 2 weeks??

canezilla

Way more gaytor fans at the game, Nightmare getting out of that area, Miami should be able to handle the coastal, Anything after that no way

solarcane

That's just like people complaining about Tate getting reps at WR. Mark Pope and Mike Hartley need to step the Bleep up. Florida top 2 corners were concerned with KJ and Jeff

sully
This is correct. if Williams had any time at all to get to his 3ed receiver Martell would have been catching passes Hartley should have worked to be on the field for.
Martell probably works harder than Hartley, even though Hartley has all the tools to be starting.

We still have a few guys that think they are entitled because of their high school careers.

solarcane

OGV,

We could possibly be seeing the emergence of

Turf Face and Jitters part two, with Williams and Kosi

solarcane

Believe me Manny will be gunning for Mack Brown for firing him.
Giving up 550 yds in one game does call for a little reprimand though.

2001 Canes O line best in college football history

McKinnie
Haji-Rasolui
Romberg
Bibla
Gonzalez
Joseph
Wilkins
Rodriguez
Fantigrassi
Carey

How the heck do you get a line good enough that Joseph backs up McKinnie and Carey backs up Gonzalez?

herbieibis

Aside from Osborne, all them WR's need to step up. We have all this speed and so called talent and yet they can't get open. Maybe they were but Williams had somebody in his grill all night long. It just blows The Herb's mind watching college football games, that these teams have WR'S running wide open and 90% of the time we catch it and hardly ever get yards after the catch, save for a bubble screen. When's the last time we caught a ball on a slant over the middle and ran 20 or more yards with it?

herbieibis

I get you Big Tee about dem $ star bust, the few that we have but Searles, didn't do those boys no favors. Goes back to recruiting also bringing in guard type plyers and not getting kids that can play tackle. Move Sciafe back to tackle and Campbell inside where he belongs. I think we could then get by with one greenhorn tackle as opposed to 2.

solarcane

Press saying Enos taking the loss harder than anyone on the team....
Pissed

DAN ENOS NOW ON JARREN WILLIAMS: "He did not play well enough for us to win the football game, that’s first and foremost

solarcane

For sully

"Martell clocked a blazing 3.96 in the 20-yard shuttle the summer before his senior season at Bishop Gorman. He added a 36.8-inch vertical jump. For a comparison, current Miami wide receiver Mike Harley, who operates primarily out of the slot, ran a 4.0 in the short shuttle coming out of high school and had a 34.4-inch vert."

UMike

On the pass that Thomas dropped in the end zone...if Williams looks to his left he has Martell wide open for TD. Tate ran a great route but Williams looked right the whole way.

Terrance Sullivan

Good Stuff Solar and Herb!

Terrance Sullivan

JW got to check off and come back to Tate for the TD. Even though Jeff should have caught that TD pass!

Terrance Sullivan

Herb, Solar are yall joining UMike and Yours Truly for the UNC Game in Chapel Hill in 12 days!

BigWindyCane1

" Campbell’s pass blocking grade was a 43.7."

So basically if he was a restaurant he would have poisoned an entire city.

Posted by: solarcane | August 26, 2019 at 10:24 AM

Campbell wasn't very good. Nelson had a 1.5 pass blocking grade. I have never seen a pass blocking grade that low.

Again, we didn't have an offensive line problem on Saturday, we had an offensive tackle problem. It can only get better as the season goes along -- it has to get better because it cannot be worse.

Turf Face and Jitters part two, with Williams and Kosi

Posted by: solarcane | August 26, 2019 at 12:39 PM

This made me LOL! I hope it is not true!

CGNC

I am thinking that I got Perry confused with Williams in the spring game the other year - one of them was pretty mobile - but JW did not look like it Saturday night.

Enos is right - he did NOT play well enough. But Enos did not really help him when he was struggling. Throw a deep ball to get them to back off. Diaz on QAM earlier blaming the defense for missed tackles.

CGNC

Solar, Martell is probably thinking "Glad I didn't get that starting job" lol.

Terrance Sullivan

No we had a Offensive Line Problem I saw far too many times The RG and LG Blocking Air while the C get bull rushed especially after a UF Time Out! SMH!

Terrance Sullivan

Solar Okay Cool! Yessss the Game and the Bethune Cookman Game will also be on ACCN!

JT is good, but the Canes really haven't had a #1 receiver since Ahmmon Richards, and perhaps also Berrios in terms of being capable of making plays for your QB and your team.

JT's muffed punt was obviously critical, and the dropped TD catch is what your #1 receiver is supposed to make, even against Henderson. This was the type of game against a rival where legends can be made. There are few opportunities, and you have to make the most out of those opportunities when they present themselves.

As far as the other receivers like Harley, Pope, Hightower, etc., it is hard to catch the ball when you are not in the game and you are not targeted.

As was mentioned here on this blog and also by both CMD and Enos, there were a few deep throws and checkdowns that were there, and those were not made for a variety of reasons. Whether it was the QB didn't see it, held on to the ball too long or (as more often the case) the tackles allowed a pressure or a sack. All of that played a role.

Frankly, I have never been a big fan of JT's attitude, but he is talented. I am pulling for JT but I need to see more before I label him a true #1 WR. The season is long and he will be given his opportunity to shine.

Martell reminds me of Edelman or Berrios

KYcane

Field position sucked as well

The 4th fkd up special teams play no one mentioned was the turds downing the ball inside the 5

Sarasota 'cane

We knew we had o-line issues going in. IMO the the 3 glaring Special Teams gaffes (fake punt, muffed punt return, and missed FG) cost us the game. Those 3 gaffes cost us 17 points in a game decided by 4 points! That's what I'm struggling with today. For all our weaknesses UM lost on 3 coachable mistakes.

Those ST problems and penalties can be fixed, the o-line problems are going to linger for at least another season or 2.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda...

Go 'canes!!

herbieibis

Tee, don't know yet about the game. I can go but have to work the next day. Only 3:15 from home but being at 8 and getting home 2:30-3, just don't know yet. U going. Would love to meet some of U guys. Definetly going to Duke.

herbieibis

The catch in the end zone would have been a tough one but the good WR's haul that in. Ball thrown before he turn his head, no doubt TD but it was thrown a little late.
Thought Williams played about as good as expected. Took a beating like Francois did against Bama a few years ago.

WR routes have to be sharper. Glad Enos pissed. Hell this is game we should have won. Just got to get over the dam hump of losing road games against good teams and also playing like slobs.

All fixable stuff but a lot of leaks to plug.

Looking at Rivals recruiting because that is what The Herb loves to do, as of right now our favorite teams, Clemson, LSU, Georgia, Bama and OSU have a combined total of 39 of the top 100 players and counting.

Terrance Sullivan

Herb Yes Me and UMike will be there. I totally understand if you cant make it I will be at Duke Game as well so We can link up there if you cant make UNC Game!

I don't really think it is because it's been a while and Ralph's overlooking a few key things into why those predecessors are probably going to end up the worse duo. Their lines were better by several margins compared to the two current ones Perry and Williams have had blocking for them first of all. Skill position talent was down though for Turf Face and Jitters which just brought out the ample plethora of worse in both of them. Also, while Perry has social media use issues just like Turf Face, he at least shows some potential to this point, while Williams is slightly less of a quitter than Jitters so far. Marve/Harris is probably the better QB duo comparison that's fairer to the current roster but it is tough to argue too hard against it also because it takes a lot of bad play to break a Turf Face single game sack record admittedly! Guessing the starter job is open against the always tough 'bye' opponent this week.

Posted by: CGNC | August 26, 2019 at 03:03 PM

Oh come on, only five of them on the first TD UF scored, that's not even more than half the defense! If only there was somebody in charge of teaching all these seniors on defense on down the roster these last few seasons on the staff who could have coached them up better on how to bring the ball carrier down, that would have fixed that problem, now who could have been responsible for that at Miami under the previous regime, hmmmmm . . .

herbieibis

OGV,
Part of the problem is our DB's look like tooth picks. Our db's need to be in the 190 range. Dam if most of them look like they weigh 175 if that.

I'm thinking you cope with stuff pretty well already just by sticking with them Canes, that book will bring out the best in you

solarcane

Solar, Martell is probably thinking "Glad I didn't get that starting job" lol.

CG,
Yea Martell was the first to congratulate Williams when he got to the sideline. Tate probably said "Keep it up dog, I can dig this not getting blasted on my ass every play"

I think Williams has a great shot at most sacks in a season if he concentrates.
I got a feeling we are gonna see a few balls thrown 10 rows up in the seats next game just to keep Enos from running on the field and strangling him.

Turf Face was a hopeless romantic and bona fide Lady Killer in his Walter Mitty universe. I think Williams actually wants to be Big Man On Campus
for all the right reasons. (see what I did there?)

solarcane

Didn't Amari and Blades get props for their tackling all summer?
I thought 5 would have trouble covering guys, but he couldn't tackle either.

herbieibis

Looks like no changes yet on the Oh line per Diaz. I guess it's the school of hard knocks for Nelson, Campbell and of course the beneficiary of this learning on the job is Williams. He'll learn to start grabbing some face mask and telling them to block.

herbieibis

Solar,
They had the Deon Sanders syndrome.

herbieibis

I believe Coach Diaz is sinking or swimming with these starters and we either win with them or we are losing but the outcome will be for the betterment of the team down the road. Being a former coach, I love the attitude, may not make the fans happy, but this team in the end will be better for it. Got to grow up sooner or later and the message here is step up or get stepped on.

raizecane

Enos said at press conference that Williams was responsible for 5 of the 10 sacks. Missed a lot of wide open receivers as well.......said his QB play was "uncharacteristic" from how he practiced.

solarcane

herb,
You could tell when Diaz was saying one day these guys will be sophomores that he knows after all the good and bad this season, Clemson is going to beat us by what ever they feel fitting and next year we might beat a good team once in awhile.

herbieibis

I think in laymen terms, he's saying it ain't always going to be this way, so enjoy the bumpy ride until new tar gets laid down, which will be just in time for the season opener against Bama in 2021. The big key though, can he be a finisher in recruiting. We all know The U's albetros has been the line play and being able to recruit quality.
Next year will be a little rough, as we have to replace Pink, Shaq, McCloud and Romeo. looks like Steed and Bradley have a long road back and that's an If, so our LB's will be greenhorns.

solarcane

When you know you have become irrelevant to your fan base.

A higher percentage of homes in Spartanburg SC watched the UF UM game than the percentage of people in Miami Ft Lauderdale.

Reminds me of Golden's last days

TonyCane

First games of notable head coaches:

PETE CARROLL (at USC)
09/01/2001 (W) San Jose State (3-9) 21-10

NICK SABAN (at Toledo)
09/08/1990 (W) Miami, OH (5-5-1) 20-14

BOB STOOPS (at Oklahoma)
09/11/1999 (W) Indiana State (non 1A) 49-0

JIMMY JOHNSON (at Oklahoma State)
09/08/1979 (W) North Texas (5-7) 25-7

URBAN MEYER (at Bowling Green)
09/01/2001 (W) Missouri (4-7) 20-13

KIRBY SMART (at Georgia)
09/03/2016 (W) North Carolina (8-5) 33-24

SCOTT FROST (at UCF)
09/03/2016 (W) S Carolina State (non-1A) 38-0

LES MILES (at Oklahoma State)
09/01/2001 (L) S. Mississippi (6-5) 9-17

Unless Florida drops off the map this year and severely underperforms, non of the above had as tough of a game one as CMD. Most had close games, and the only two blowouts were against non-1A schools.

CoCane

Bottom line:

If the frosh OT's improve game to game, this team will be a big problem...

solarcane

Tony yea,
think of red shirt Freshman Kosars first start...
loses to Florida by like 20 some points, how did the rest of that season go?

💯

The freshmen offensive tackles are the glowing weakness on the team right now, but that won’t last forever. They can and must improve. But I also believe that the Canes need some improvement in every position on offense and special teams, and the defense can also improve. For example, CMD pointed out that Redwine and Jaquan would have made the tackle on Toney’s long TD run, and would have intercepted or deflected that long throw by Franks to Hammond near the end of the game. CMD referred to Jaquan as the eraser. Hall and Carter might be more talented, and may have a higher ceiling, but they will have to grow up quick.

Overall, the talent is there and I believe Jimmy Johnson is right in his assessment that this team will be better by the end of the season under this coaching staff.
