The New Miami found old ways to lose a football game in their 24-20 loss to the Florida Gators in Orlando on Saturday night.
Numerous penalties, a few dropped passes and one costly turnover can do that to a young and developing team.
We had predicted a final score of Miami 34 - Florida 17. And if not for the above mentioned mistakes it very well could have been.
The Hurricanes certainly look much improved over last year's debacle in Dallas when UM was out-manned and out-played decisively by LSU. They were always in this game and had their chances to steal a win but could not manage to come up a big play when it mattered most or score enough points to change the outcome. Simply put, twenty points is not going to get it done against the big boys in 2019.
This very young Miami team has a new head coach and a new starting QB but clearly still lacks the confidence or play makers (or both?) needed to pull off a road upset against a top 20 team.
The Florida Gators are not likely to win the SEC or the National Championship but had just enough talent and coaching to beat Miami in the college football 2019 season opener.
It is very likely Miami will be much improved by the end of the season and the results will reflect this as the Hurricanes chase an ACC title game date with likely opponent the Clemson Tigers.
Until then we encourage UM fans to be calm and Cane on. There is hope in Coral Gables again as The New Miami shows signs of being a work in progress.

Enos was hard on Jarren at the press conference, and he didn’t sugar coat his mistakes. IMHO, Enos’s harsh criticism leads me to believe that Jarren is his guy. He is putting pressure on him to get better because he knows he can play better.
This is what a lot of good position coaches do, although they usually do it privately rather than publicly. IMHO, if Enos didn’t think Jarren had potential to be good, he would either coddle him or replace him without criticizing him. Enos and Jarren will work hard to get this offense fixed.

There's hope... but NO SILVER LINING! We didn't beat the Gators on their worst day. We're 0-1, and THEY now have bragging rights for a few years. This sucks.

Time for Coach Patke to enter the transfer portal (I know it's for players only, in that case, imagine a teleporter or railroad tie covered in tar) Charleston Southern would be an appropriate landing spot.
Posted by: Old Skool | August 25, 2019 at 10:06 AM
When Patke was promoted form water boy to Special Teams coach I said at the time that this was Diaz's biggest mistake and a sign of poor judgment IMHO. Patke has NO experience coaching ST and very limited experience coaching ANYTHING at all. This was nothing more than promoting a good and loyal friend.
See Richt and son example.

When your supposed three BEST and most experienced defensive players grade out like this you got no chance. Oh and it also helps to score more than 20 points. That is all.
Posted by: 86Cane | August 27, 2019 at 05:26 AM
1. PFF graded Donaldson out with a 87.8 pass blocking grade. It appears Donaldson is thriving at his natural position.
2. With Gaynor and Scaife also grading at 62.6 respectively, it appears the Canes don’t have an offensive line problem, the Canes have an offensive tackle problem.
Posted by: BigWindyCane | August 25, 2019 at 11:46 PM
1. "Natural position" being Guard not tackle like someone on here said. Niow, who was that?
2. This we already knew.

I don't think he was hard on him inasmuch as he was honest about his play. He did not come out and say this loss is Jarren's fault, rather he pointed out all the mistakes that need correcting which apparently are not evident in the practices. He is the starting QB. He can either handle that kind of critigue or he can't, if he can't then..... Like Soup says, lead, follow or get out of the way.
If anyone pointed fingers about how the game was lost it was Diaz who called out the defense for actually losing the game.
Thanks again CMR for never playing JW15 last year.

I agree 100%. Not sure who makes the decision to play/not play WRs, whether its Stubbs, Enos or CMD himself, but I didn't understand the rotation. I did notice that on offense, fewer players were rotated in across the board, whereas the defense played their two deep.
The criticism has focused on Martel's 15 snaps, but JT dropped a TD, Osborne fumbled, Harley had one catch and couldn't make anything happen and it otherwise was an underwhelming day from all the WR corps that did play a lot of snaps. I really didn't see a #1 WR on the field on Saturday, but maybe that will change as the season progresses. I remember when Ahmmon Richards was a freshman, and it took several games before Kaaya and the coaches realized that Richards, not Coley, was the true #1 WR. As a matter of fact, defenses realized it before Kaaya did, but once he did, the offense became more prolific.
Also, the Canes WRs were going up against two future NFL corners in Henderson and Wilson. In addition, Jarren had his first start and failed to connect with JT when he was open a couple of times.
That said, it does seem that Stubbs could rotate his group more, especially when the starters are underwhelming. I am hoping he does rotate more WRs starting Sept. 7, so we can see what Wiggins, Pope, Hightower and Payton can do.

windy,
I saw Osborne and Martell open short a couple times. I'm sure Thomas was open deeper but Jarren was on his back by the time that happened.
I still feel the stars got in a few of our younger receivers eyes and college is a lot tougher than they thought.
Their coach said he isn't coaching their talent he is coaching their technique.

You can tell the blob sidtards so easy these last few seasons by who's trying to spin the most to sell the future since the past is still dried up.
Poor Darryl can't even crack a joke at how poor the opener was played by Miami without getting dogpiled by the top tier posters anymore, it's going to be an even longer season if gallows humor isn't allowed to fly here!

Very disappointing. The blocking we knew would be bad. Stupid penalties what is new? We used to get them in the heyday, but either overcame them or were so far ahead it was nothing. That is not the deal now. Fumble, missed kick, holding penalty in RZ really hurt.Ugly football!!!!!
Blades may think he is a BA....he is not. He tackle poorly....he missed big on that stupid first TD....had we been alert on ST it dont happen...and 7 dont look like the fool he is. His penalty at the end for USLC....just stupid. Calling him out...grown up and learn to tackle....and shut yo mouf!!!
D leaders 3 LBs not ready too slow to fill!!!
Only positive was no quit...still not a lot different since Fiesta....same Miami except the kids kept plugging.....move on to UNC!!!

The sloppy stuff really bother me. Poor blocking technique....10 sacks...shame. False starts, delay of game, holding, missed chipper fg, fumble, 4th down conversions, poor tackling...lot of arm tackling, yapping, talking in the huddle.....just unacceptable. I can accept getting beat....but the sloppiness and apathy FB....NO!
They were mine, I would have got off the bus put pads back on and run their asses off....getting beat is one thing...not giving a damn is WRONG!!!
Run those clowns into the ground Sunday....then move on!!!

One of my regrets is not hooking up with fellow canespacers at the game. But i thought I saw Native hanging with the UF band leader for a bit....

Who was saying earlier this summer that we were ready for Clemson? That would be a massacre. I think if we get to that point to have to play them for ACC....forfeit the game.....we are miles from that level at this point. The OL is going to be a big problem all year....you just cannot win with that kind of play. If you were a back or QB...or WR....seeing that line play....would you even consider coming here? It kills your skill position recruiting...cause they know they will get dusted.

I'll say this, what did we have to lose by playing our back up OT'S? I mean Nelson is still stuck in his stance for all I know, while DE is standing over our qb smoking a butt and drinking coffee.
Posted by: Herbieibis | August 28, 2019 at 09:53 PM
The Canes have two weeks to prepare the the trip to UNC. I will watch closely to see if there is any improvement in the play of the OTs, and whether the other players clean up the issues I saw in the opening game against the Gators. Improvement is critical, and I believe in Jimmy Johnson’s prediction that the coaches will get these players better.
If I see improvement at UNC, I will feel more confident in my original prediction that the Canes will continue to improve as the season progresses, and that a 10-2 or 11-1 prediction is still possible with this relatively weak Coastal Division schedule.

Posted by: solarcane | August 28, 2019 at 04:47 PM
Now, where do I even start?
1. The Swiss Cheese Gang seems to have become a permanent fixture in Coral Gables. When will the madness end?
2. Not going to go all "Turf Face Jr." just yet on our young inexperienced QB. He has all season to prove this moniker wrong. Or unless the wheels fall off and we lose another one before FSPoo. Don't think that will happen IF we improve, like most teams do, the most between game 1 and game 2 and then steadily from then on.
3. Knee deep in hoopla? Shyte we all fell for it once again and were at least up to our hips and some others, who will go unnamed for now, were up to their necks with even a few over the heads in the hoopla. Time will tell and we will see but for now I will choose to remain very hopeful and mostly optimistic.

I guess we are going to find out if Diaz is a "Send A Message" coach or a "Just Win Baby" coach real early in his tenure. I am already concerned about this. Here are a few reasons why:
1. Diaz and Enos will never have more time to prepare for an opponent than they had to prep for Da Gatahs. Are you going to tell me that they didn't have ONE special play for the offense, much less speedy and highly rated pine riders like Pope, Hightower or Wiggins, when we needed it most even IN SPITE of the OL?
2. Now I said a long time ago that as fans it is only our job to cheer for the team to win and not make personnel or play calling decisions, that is the coaches job, BUT when Osborn plays EVERY snap and newly converted Martell plays more than the three pine riders COMBINED, then you gotta start scratching your head just a little. Burns and Lingard didn't even play? Lingard I get because they injury from last year but they were touting Burns all Summer long.
So again, we will see and time will tell but I do believe that there are some questions starting to creep into our collective minds. Not criticisms, just honest and curious questions about things that make you go hmmmm...

Now back to drinking some SERIOUS beer in Germany.
Interesting facts:
1. In medieval times people in many towns, cities and Countries in Europe often drank more beer than water because beer was safer than drinking the water. Smart people.
2. People in what is now the Czech Republic drink more beer per capita than those in Germany. And it is in the hundreds of gallons per person per year.
That's because I drink for the Czech team. Now if OGV drinks for the German team things might even up a bit, but until then we got them beat!
Posted by: 86Cane | August 29, 2019 at 10:46 AM
I would agree with 86; you put a guy in who could not win the QB position and he really did nothing....but ya leave 3 burners sitting? Martell may be a good guy with a looker for a gal, but that matters to me none!!!!
Get these kids in the game get them the ball...and the OL coach needs to get in there and work....get Mt. McKenney and others to lend a hand, talk them up....but coach their tails off...push them to be better...it takes work not just lip service!
We cannot go all year with that kind of play. Williams will be out....Martell and Porn Boy will be out too....you cannot let a QB get hit like that.....the technique and footwork was shameful...got to get better quick!!!
