Competition is one of the cornerstones of The New Miami and the most highly anticipated position battle of fall camp finally has a victor.
Head coach Manny Diaz announced Monday that redshirt freshman Jarren Williams will be the Hurricanes' starting quarterback when the season begins against Florida on Aug. 24. Williams earned the starting nod over redshirt sophomores N'Kosi Perry and Tate Martell.
"All three guys showed tremendous improvement and development, which is a credit to their hard work and the work of Dan Enos and his offensive staff," Diaz said. "We believe we can win with all three guys, however, we feel like Jarren has the greatest upside due to his passing ability, his instincts and his determination.
"As we move into preparation for the Florida game we will continue the competition to determine who will serve as the backup quarterback."
Williams will be the first starting quarterback of the Diaz Era, accomplishing a goal he set for himself years ago.
"It means the world," Williams said. "This is something that I've always strived for growing up. It's been my dream since I was a kid. When I was six years old, I used to sit in front of the TV and watch Michael Vick play. That's a dream I have always had and I've strived for it. Having the opportunity to lead this team is the opportunity of a lifetime and I am going to take full advantage of it."
After playing in just one game as a true freshman a year ago, the 2019 season will be the first chance the college football world will truly get to see Williams in action. The former U.S. Army All-American and consensus four-star recruit described what he brings to an offense as a starting quarterback.
"I feel like I'm an elite passer," Williams said. "I can make all the throws, even in tight windows. What a lot of people don't know is that I can extend plays with my feet. I'm not a slow guy. I can tuck the ball and get 15 yards. I can make a guy miss, but I am a pass-first guy. I stand in the pocket and trust the pocket and get the ball to my receivers."

Have zero issues with how the QB race played out.
Manny did just what he said he'd do.
Have zero problem with how the QB comp played out.
Everyone started with a clean slate. They competed throughout the spring and fall. Everyone was given an opportunity to win the job.
Williams did it best and he looks from the outside to have been the right choice to lead this team.
Now go get him ready for 8/24.

Now that the QB position is set, I would like to know how the OLs and WRs, and DBs depth chart look.
On OL, it appears that Nelson is locked in at LT, and Donaldson, Scaife and Gaynor will handle the inside. RT seems to be the only position that is unsettled. I wouldn't want to see too much shuffling on the OL at this point because it is time to prepare for UF.
At Safety, I would think that Hall and Carter are the starting, but from viewing the scrimmage videos, I also saw that Smith and Knowles got some reps with the 1s, and Bolden is on the way. Looks like safety is going to to be solid, and more playing time seems to be going to the striker position, and also nickle and dime dime packages over playing the third LB. I am also eager to see who the 4th and 5th CB might be because Couch has really played well.
Starting LBs and DEs are probably the strengths of the team, but it appears that DTs Ford and Miller are playing on the next level now, even with Silvera out. This season, the DL is definitely bigger, more athletic and deeper than last season. I saw them once field level in the Spring, and I was thoroughly impressed - the most impressive looking DL I have seen in over a decade. IMHO, the Canes LBs and DLs might be the best in the ACC. They are going to be a problem for everyone the Canes play this season, and noone will be more pleased than Shaq and Pinckney, who can run untouched and rack up more tackles and TFLs.

Like any Cane fan during the off-season, I have watched numerous highlight videos over the last couple of months, and it is almost painful to see all the talent we have had and wasted. I honestly think that changes under Diaz.

LOL Shout out to Sarasota for the Valhalla reference.
Competition is a good thing. But I cannot fathom why the twitter hatred towards Tate Martell - yeah, he may have posted something he shouldn't but so have many others. This is a kid/man who wants to play football. IMHO, had he not transferred here the other two may not have been inclined to work as hard. Just my $0.02

Those three games Williams should've, would've, could've played in without burning his redshirt are huge in hindsight. We had nothing to play for at the end of the season so I'm a little salty he didn't get to play any garbage time, otherwise know last season as quarters 1-4 of every game we played in!!
Our defense will keep the opposing teams honest, we just need to give them a break from time to time to be competitive!!

Valhalla (pronounced “val-HALL-uh”; Old Norse Valhöll, “the hall of the fallen”[1]) is the hall where the god Odin houses the dead whom he deems worthy of dwelling with him.
According to the Old Norse poem Grímnismál (“The Song of the Hooded One”), the roof of the “gold-bright” Valhalla is made of shields, and has spears for its rafters. Seats made of breastplates surround the many feasting tables of the vast hall. Its gates are guarded by wolves, and eagles fly above it.[2]
The dead who reside in Valhalla, the einherjar, live a life that would have been the envy of any Viking warrior. All day long, they fight one another, doing countless valorous deeds along the way. But every evening, all their wounds are healed, and they are restored to full health.[3] They surely work up quite an appetite from all those battles, and their dinners don’t disappoint. Their meat comes from the boar Saehrimnir (Old Norse Sæhrímnir, whose meaning is unknown[4]), who comes back to life every time he is slaughtered and butchered. For their drink they have mead that comes from the udder of the goat Heidrun (Old Norse Heiðrun, whose meaning is unknown[5]). They thereby enjoy an endless supply of their exceptionally fine food and drink.[6] They are waited on by the beautiful Valkyries.

Derrick Smith (Safety) enters transfer portal. Probably not a starter but was making big strides in camp as would have been in the rotation.
My thoughts are he is upset that he won’t start and he’s the type to quit easy. Exactly what CMD is talking about weeding out on the team and getting rid of.

Exactly. Plus, even if Williams struggles in the first game against the Gators, it's with the knowledge that it's his first start ever, it's the college season opener, it's against a top 10 team, and it's with the entire offense playing under a completely new offensive scheme and playbook. If he loses that game, it's not some big indictment on him. However, he will have gained valuable experience, and by the time Miami plays FSU, he and his teammates will have had time to gel on offense and get comfortable with it, making it more efficient. So the writer seems to think that having the most talented of the three QBs getting playing time to be comfortable with the offense by the time he plays FSU is in FSU's favor?

Miami beat FSU with different QBs each year and you somehow believe this is an advantage for FSU? By the time Miami plays FSU, whoever is starting will have played in more games than the past two seasons combined. So experience won't be a factor for Miami.

Not sure why anyone would think that the selection of Williams as the starter is good for the Seminoles. While experienced, Perry didn't exactly tear it up last year and Martell's persona could be more impressive than his actual skills. Williams sounds pretty good to me and I'm a die hard Seminole. I look for our game in 2019 to be a real battle (as they usually are) and kudos to the Canes for the QB selection they've made.

Really? Canes have at least 5 receivers that need double coverage (good luck with that) and arguably one of best defenses !! Right they need a QB who is calm and will not lose the game for them. Miami will get stronger fast through out the season. Also whoTF wants Blackman or Franks ... Jesus Franks was worst QB under pressures in the ENTIRE country and Miami DE’s will rock his world. Blackman is going to get pummeled I fear.Do your homework because you are just terrible analyst

I'd have to agree with the other comments. Miami chose the best-performing QB. Had they just given the job to Martell "as promised" or went the "experience" route with Perry, I would have agreed with you. Instead, Diaz went with the best player, feelings be damned. I don't think this would make the team easier to beat by a long shot.

On one hand always hilarious to watch the semenholes wake up and smell the wafting fumes of the roaring trash fire their football program continues to remain to be. GD will be along shortly to slurp them when they're down because that's the sidtard directive and he has to follow it.
On the other hand, finding yet another way to lose on the road to aforementioned trash fire program instead of escaping with the win would run counter to the narrative that promoting from within of this last regime that went .500 last season with mostly their roster was a smart idea when Butch was winning more games with less talent across the ocean.

College Game Day...kinda
You have to pay full Disneyworld admission, 109 bucks, you can not bring any sign, horn, megaphone, etc.
You can smile discreetly and throw up the U, but be courteous to the 90,000 people in the park looking at their phones.

From today's NYTimes regarding researchers who performed before and after scans of football players before and after the season
After the scans were complete, the players began playing. During all subsequent practices and games, they wore helmets containing specialized accelerometers that tracked the number and intensity of every head impact and how the athletes’ heads moved when they were hit.
At the end of the season, the researchers gathered the helmet data and re-scanned players’ midbrains. Two of the athletes had sustained concussions; their information was removed.
The other 38 players had not been concussed but had whacked their heads with regularity, their helmets recording a total of 19,128 impacts, some slight and others packing a wallop.
When the researchers next compared the scans and the helmet data, they saw a disconcerting pattern. Most of the players’ midbrains were subtly different. The area’s white matter, which is the tissue that connects neurons, was slightly less healthy now, the scans showed.
“There was a kind of fraying” of the tissue, Dr. Hirad says.

ESPN already ruined its first GameDay broadcast of the 2019 football season

ESPN is taking its cross promotion to the next level for the start of the college football season, and although it’s all happening at “The Most Magical Place on Earth,” fans probably won’t be thrilled about this.
For the first College GameDay show of the season for Week 0 — Saturday, August 24 when there are just two games — ESPN, whose parent company is Disney, will broadcast from the Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World in Orlando. It’s ahead of the first game of the season, Miami vs. Florida at Camping World Stadium, which is only a few miles away from Disney’s resort.
This seems like not a terrible idea at first, right? Lee Corso would pair perfectly with Mickey Mouse for a cheesy segment about football while more-tame-than-typical fans cheer in the background.

The problem is the fan experience for this show sounds awful.
First, signs — which are more synonymous with College GameDay than anything else — are not allowed. That’s a Disney World rule, and similarly, things like banners, flags, horns, whistles and artificial noise makers are also prohibited.
OK, fine, whatever. But fans with tickets to the Saturday night game can still show up and make a ton of noise in the background, right?
Of course they can, but for the price of admission to the theme park, which is famously expensive. So that means for adults looking to attend GameDay at Disney, tickets for the Magic Kingdom on a Saturday are $133 — and $127 for kids.
But that’s not all.
There is no real access to the commentators or GameDay set for fans on site. According to ESPN’s fan guide, those in attendance “may catch a glimpse of the live broadcast as it takes place at the elevated train station on Main Street, U.S.A.” — which may or may not be close to the set.
So, to recap: If you want to attend the first College GameDay broadcast, it’ll cost more than $100 — more than $250 if you don’t want to go alone — you can’t bring a sign or flag and you can watch the show from a train station inside the Magic Kingdom that’s an unknown distance from the set.
Sounds like a great way to ensure people don’t show up.
The sea of rowdy fans with their energy and chants and face paint and signs and flags help make GameDay as a TV show. It’s entertaining and fun, and people watching at home love looking for the funniest/most insulting sign. For The Win writes about the signs every week because they’re usually hilarious.
But with the Week 0 broadcast set up, ESPN has stripped away a huge part of what college football fans love about the show.
But at least things will be back to normal for Week 1, when GameDay will be at Clemson for the following Saturday for the defending champs’ opener against Georgia Tech.

Competition is one of the cornerstones of The New Miami.....
although it started at UM in 1980...and worked good until 2003 and was gone for about 16 years!!!! Nuff Said!!!
I think the QB competition was great....every position should always be up for grabs....if a guy cannot do it then its open....always!!! I think this "Old/New Miami" has been long overdue. Clappy, Onion, AlPa and CMR just figured recruit the stars, and whoever does not de-commit because the rot had set in visibly pay them based on stars and HS stats. That stuff is a part of the plan in ways, but the college game is all different as is the NFL.
You have to force competition to bring out the best and to win Titles..National titles!!!!....Schnell, Jimmy, Ericson and Butch proved it....those other guys not so much.
Hats off to Manny and Co....and JW15. Sounds like the young man worked hard kept his mouth shut and earned the slot!!
