Watching Jalen Hurts never get under center stay back in shotgun and just shred. Even against a real defense he would be a bad boy.
Enos needs to leave Williams back there til we get an O line.

If the Canes go on a roll, I will point to the post by Soup yesterday (and maybe some Divine intervention) that marked the turning point in this season.

Otherwise, I pray God brings me peace too because I predict I will be one angry junk yard dog if the Canes dont win the Coastal Division

Aero,
Carter was one of my favorite players coming out of high school, then he looked great on special teams.
Now he looks confused with coverage and his tackling seems to get more sketchy every game.

Lingard goes to Georgia or Wisconsin he would thrive. Here he is just rotting on the bench.

I love Mallory's passion for being a Cane but he is instant death at the worst possible moment. Playmaker's kid doesn't get many snaps?

Question - why cant we just play our best players - rather than playing games; why is patchen playing over Rousseau and hill? Maybe we win both or at least one of our losses if they are playing vs patchen;
Now hes talking about how great bolden is BUT he says can he tackle etc - just play these guys (we already know knowles and carter are not cutting it)
What Im saying is I want to see the best most exciting players playing who give us the best chance to win - Ive seen nothing in patchen, knowles or carter that show that they should be playing more than potential superstars
Im also going to say (and Ive said this numerous times before) that as much as we like deejay and camron, lingard is the real deal and we need to play him or he will be starting at Georgia or bama in a yr or 2

Baker took responsibility for the defensive breakdowns against Central Michigan during Mondays press conference.

I dont think we necessarily had a great game plan going into it, he said. Credit Central Michigan. I thought they did a better job coaching than I did. So it starts with me. I think, looking at it, and really having a bye week and looking at the entire season, I think we identified multiple things that we can do better, especially as a play caller.

Enos
" When youre under center you never have to take your eyes off the configuration of the secondary."

No sense looking at the pass rush that looks like its coming straight in from Cape Kennedy, the o line will make quick work of that...

"Gee this is sweet having the laces right where I like them while I lay here on my back."

solarcane

Enos shotgun or under center

I think theres certain parts of your run game that are better underneath center rather than in the shotgun匈 think theres certain play-action passes that are better underneath center rather the shotgun as well. When youre under center you never have to take your eyes off the configuration of the secondary.

You never have to have that moment or two where you have to have your eyes come down (to receive the ball) like in the shotgun. Theres certain things the quarterbacks are more comfortable having their eyes down the field the entire time.

And, theres a lot of times those quarterbacks want to have the ball in their hands right now rather than waiting. When youre underneath center you have it immediately in your hands. You have the laces already shaped in your hands and youre able to make some quick throws out of it that way.

Theres benefits being under center and theres certainly benefits from being in the shotgun. We will always continually evaluate what were doing out of both from the standpoint of a self-scout situation.

"Lets hope that Enos and the Miami Hurricanes offensive coaching staff does continue to evaluate if Williams is better under center or in the shotgun. It is an advantage to be multiple on either offense or defense."

solarcane

Enos O line

We moved the guys all around last week(Freshman starter) Zion (Nelson) is doing a nice job. Being a left tackle and being 18 its hard. In a lot of other places, he might be on the scout team right now, getting big and trying to figure out how to go to class and everything. We think hes improving daily. We have a lot of confidence in Zion.

The big thing is hes gotten beat off the ball. We have to help him maybe with cadence and snap counts and things like that to help him. But certainly, when hes been in trouble this year, its been because hes been late off the ball and thats about it. His technique and fundamentals are getting better. Again, hes a good player.

But we kind of moved a lot of guys here, there and everywhere this week, but were pretty much back to where we were, and we feel good about the five moving forward. Were just going to keep coaching them to play hard, give great toughness and get better every week. All of those guys again its a process, theyre getting better.

We used last week as a practice week. We went against our (first-team) defense a lot, a lot of live, good-on-good work, put these guys in tough situations and again its a process. Theyre going to get better. Weve got build this offense from inside out.

There has been some suggestion that Enos is not helping the offensive linemen enough in the schemes and play calling. Some analysts have suggested that Miami use the shotgun more often if not exclusively. Enos squashed that idea during the press conference on Monday. Enos said they will always be balanced on offense.

That was in response to a question about Miami redshirt freshman quarterback Jarren Williams being under center or in the shotgun. Enos elaborated about the reasons behind his decisions to have Williams in the shotgun or under center.

The Miami offensive coordinator stated different plays work depending on being under center or in the gun. Whatever happens, going forward, Miami needs to figure out a way quickly what the best protection scheme is for Williams, The Hurricanes cannot afford another performance like Florida when Miami allowed 10 sacks.

Enos

One-third of Dan Enos first regular season as the Miami Hurricanes offensive coordinator is over, and the results so far have been a mixed bag. Theres marked improvement from a year ago, but 2018 set a low bar to cross. There have been games when Enos needed Miamis defense to lift up his offense, but there have also been moments when the offense has outperformed the defense.

After four games and a second bye week, Enos has a substantial sample size on which to judge his offense. The final question to end his weekly news conference Monday in Coral Gables was simple: Do you feel like you have the right scheme?

Absolutely, Enos said. We think that these guys are really starting to understand it better and better the more we do it. The bye week was again good for us to do it. I think the more reps our quarterbacks get, the better theyre going to play and, again, I think the big thing is if plays dont work, theres really three reasons why: Its a mental error, its a physical error or its a structural error.

TOP ARTICLES

Alcohol isnt cheap at Dolphins games. But $724 for two beers? Thats criminal,
cops say.

To be quite honest with you, whenever theres a structural error, I kind of stand up here and tell you guys it was a structural error. Weve got to clean up really the mental and the physical side of things, and again thats what happens in offensive football. If you have 10 guys do what theyre supposed to do and one guy doesnt, the plays not going to be efficient.

Its a familiar refrain. Former coach Mark Richt spent 2018 preaching something similar as his offense struggled and finished near the bottom of the country in most national rankings.

Diaz hired Enos in January in part because of the assistant coachs track record with developing quarterbacks, but also because he could make Miamis offense more innovative and dynamic. Through three games, the overhauled offense looked the part the Hurricanes had jumped more than 50 spots in the national rankings for total offense despite starting a redshirt freshman quarterback and two freshman offensive linemen before it crashed apart Sept. 21, when they managed only 303 total yards against the Central Michigan Chippewas at Hard Rock Stadium. The running game, previously the Hurricanes strength, unraveled and Miami averaged only 1.5 yards per carry. The offensive line, already the Hurricanes weakness, gave up four sacks and played perhaps its worst game of the year.

More than a week removed from ugly 17-12 win, Enos addressed his offenses deficiencies for the first time and cited the running game and offensive line as the two primary culprits for what went wrong at Hard Rock Stadium. The running backs didnt run north the way they have most of the year, the coordinator said, and the offensive line was simply overmatched by Central Michigans front.

Weve just got to get guys to make routine plays right now back from last week that we didnt do in the couple games before that, Enos said. When we were making routine plays, we were moving the ball much better.

Blake Baker expects changes in the Hurricanes defense this week. This is what he said

All our guys can do a good job playing press man, says UM defensive coordinator

University of Miami defensive coordinator Blake Baker talks to the media during a press conference at the Schwartz Center for Athletic Excellence at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida on Monday, September 30, 2019. BY MATIAS J. OCNER
A lot has changed since Miami Hurricanes defensive coordinator Blake Baker took over ahead of the start of the 2019 season.

The team lost its leading tackler in defensive back Jaquan Johnson, in addition to defensive lineman Joe Jackson, who recorded a team-high 8.5 sacks. And after ranking first in the nation in passing yards allowed last year, Miami ranks 49th against the pass through four games.

In his weekly press conference, Baker spoke about the Hurricanes defensive struggles and some of the differences in the Hurricanes coverages from last season to now.

TOP ARTICLES

Alcohol isnt cheap at Dolphins games. But $724 for
two beers? Thats criminal, cops say.

Miami plays much more man-to-man coverage this year, compared to under then-defensive coordinator Manny Diaz when the Hurricanes played zone nearly 50 percent of the time. Baker said the reason for the change in the teams defensive approach is a combination of the teams personnel, and how theyve adjusted for the run-pass-option.

I think with as much RPO game out there in college football, thats a common answer from a defensive coordinator standpoint, Baker said. Obviously, you have to have the guys that can do that, and I believe we do, and then also, just maybe from a personnel standpoint, who we have, I think all our guys can do a good job playing press-man, so its probably a combination of the two.

Despite a run defense that allows just 2.06 yards per rush (sixth-lowest yards per attempt allowed), the Hurricanes struggling secondary is allowing 209.8 passing yards per game (6.66 yards per attempt).

The defensive staff has tried different options. With sophomore Gurvan Hall starting all four games at safety, Amari Carter and Robert Knowles have shared time at the position opposite him.

Hall leads the team with 28 tackles (13 solo), and he has a sack and 2.5 tackles for loss, while Knowles and Carter have 17 tackles and 12 tackles, respectively.

The secondary will get a needed boost Saturday against Virginia Tech (2-2, 0-2 ACC) with the addition of redshirt sophomore safety Bubba Bolden, who transferred from USC after the 2018 season.

I think for sure from a depth standpoint they can provide a huge boost for us, Baker said of the two additions to the defense. But also, just a spark. Their energy, they both had two really good weeks of practice. I think their role is gonna be determined through the flow of the game, so I cant give you a snap count on either one of them, but both of them have played really, really well the last two weeks in practice and they both have a really good energy about them.

I expect to see both of them on the field on Saturday.

Though the Hurricanes No. 13 defense has barely looked like the dominant force that many had grown accustomed to in the past, it has had success in stopping the run and getting off the field on third down.

Miami is ranked fourth in the country in third down defense and No. 6 against the run, allowing 59.8 rushing yards per game.

Baker said he thinks the team played well on third down all year until last weeks matchup against Central Michigan. The Chippewas converted on six of 10 third downs, which is the highest third-down conversion percentage the Hurricanes have allowed all season.

I expect to see some different things on Saturday in our third-down package.

THIS AND THAT
Baker said hes been pleased with Gregory Rousseaus production on the field.

Rousseau played the most snaps that he has all season against Central Michigan, and Baker said thats a result of Rousseau getting more comfortable with what the coaches have asked of him.

And Baker said he expects that hell continue to play more as he continues to produce on the field.

Cornerback Christian Williams has impressed Baker.

He said the freshman has shown more improvement than any of the other first-year guys from a competitive edge standpoint.

Baker added that he and fellow freshman TeCory Couch still need to get a better understanding of the defense and the adjustments that the coaches make during the games, but theyve built confidence with the defensive staff each week.

3- almost forgot: an institution like the ncaa, needs to also look at the interests of the student . . . in the dewan huell (finally remembered his name) case, they should have made clear transparent progress at an early stage . . . they could have knocked him out of some games and given him some community service, where dewan (and OTHERS!) would have benefitted from the disciplinary action

the ncaa is simply a closed club, seemingly with it's own prejudices and definitely with a total lack of awareness
. . . "unfairness" seems to be it's middle name;
ooops alpine repeating himself

to sum up: burn it down; build a new one: the NNCAA!!!

i agree with you, 86, that this will probably open a pandora's box of unforeseeable problems that will shake up sports for the next decade or 3, in a way that will probably not be good for the game

. . . i don't follow this closely, but two things that have irritated me about this amateur college stuff:

1- the ncaa is a closed club with zero transparency; no one seems to know why certain cases get handled quickly and/or leniently; others need lots of time and/or big punishment . . . nor does it feel like the process of investigation is fair
. . . and this makes it hard to support this structure
. . . i already forget the name of our bb center last year: but the way they unfairly handled his case made me want to shoot a double bird in their direction

- also, the dollars are out of control in college athletics . .. it feels like there need to be some kind of "socialistic constraints" on those profitting from amateurs: maybe a much higher "education tax" or something, for all salaries (coaches, trainers, athletic directors) earned beyond $500,000? 1 million? 2.5 million? i don't know, but i'm sure it's impossible to keep out corruption the way it's being handled at this time ...
those wanting the big bucks should move on to the profi leagues

FAIRNESS & TRANSPARENCY need to be the two main currencies of amateurism . . . and they're not . . . and we know from the samson story what happens when two pillars collapse . . .

I can't wait to see how this "well intended" law creates a complete cluster F#%$ in basketball, basketball and eventually baseball to a lesser degree.

When 5 star QB Johnny gets $3 million and wears a mink coat, seven gold necklaces and a few carat diamond earrings to practice, has 5 girls at his side and drives a Mercedes to the OL protecting him get NOTHING let's see how that turns out.

Then they will claim "income inequality" and pass another "law" to make sure all players get paid the same amount.

Then Johnny QB will say hey I'm the star and I want more than the third string DT and then what law will they pass?

You can't legislate your way out of this fine mess you have gotten into. Just watch.

Williams unquestionably had the better game against the Tar Heels. The Hurricanes redshirt freshman QB was 30-39 for 309 yards with two TDs, obviously no interceptions and a passer rating of 172.1 against the Tar Heels.

Lawrence was 18-30 for 206 yards, one TD, no interceptions and a 128.7 passer rating against the Tar Heels. Lawrence did add 11 carries for 45 yards against North Carolina. Willams had six carries for negative nine yards against the Tar Heels. Four of Williams carries against UNC were sacks. Three of those by Tomon Fox.

Lo heading for the transfer portal?

Navarro reported that family members of Lingards have reported on social media that the sophomore is growing impatient and is unhappy having to wait to make his 2019 season debut. The Miami football staff wants to bring Lingard along slowly and smartly. according to Navarro.

Some of our Positional Coaching (OL) in particular has sucked in particular for years as well.

Are you sure it's not because you pissed off a member of the Corleone family?

Sorry for the delayed response. Just got back from Italy. Rafting the Chattooga and fishing in North Georgia was some good times, however, if rafting is in the cards, there won't be any shirtless pics of me for a while. The Italian food and wine was too damn good.

If Manny wants to steel the nerves and quicken the reflexes of his players in the off season, I would suggest letting them drive for a few hours in Naples. The hairs on my white knuckles stood straight up.

"Ohio State is overrated"

"Did someone get the license plate of that truck that just ran us over"

- Nebraska Fans Sunday morning...

Go Canes!!

Our recruting rankings aren't much different than UNC's over the last four years.

Think that 2 win season last year was a little misleading, they've been decimated by injuries several times.

speaking of canes-fins connection . . .

how is it that they both have the same two glaring weaknesses:
OL's and kickers!!!!!!!!!!

I will say this once again for the people in the back until the 4 Star Players play like 4 Star Players we won't get to the elite level. That's way more important than Guys that actually were good here that left early. I don't understand how y'all excuse make for these 4 Star busts who haven't did didley poo here but y'all stay clowning guys that were good who left early. I can't relate with y'all on that thinking at all. Go Canes! Beat VT!

Norton was the player that lost his arm. I really liked him, and thought he and McIntosh were a force. They should have both stayed for their senior seasons, and along with Gerald Willis III, this defense would be the best in the country.

Willis is still on the Dolphins practice squad. I am rooting for him. He only played one season here, but I like how the coaches worked with him and allowed him to work through his issues.

I saw him at a Canes camp, and I did a double take because I expected him to be bigger. Willis was in great shape though, and its amazing what he could do at his size. His brother, Landon Collins is a great safety. I dont know what he is listed at, but I think his size may work against him at the pro level. Maybe the right system could benefit him. But Willis was a heck of a DT for us in college

When the culture truly changes...the Tar Heels will change. Once that culture is in place, we roll.

Just curious...is that a quote from first year UNC head coach Mack Brown?

Just when you think you have a lock on being the most impatient, unrealistic, selfish fan base in college football, along come the Hokies and put their left foot in and shake it all about.

"This is the end. Yup, Friday evening ended the 2019 football season. Actually it ended with our loss to Boston College on August 31st. I said, back before that game, that IF Virginia Tech won it, the team will have turned the corner and it could be a really good season. Like many programs, the IF didnt occur, and so we go to the ELSE condition. This team has not made the turn, and now each game is going to be a from scratch battle. The Hokies 2019 season is over. The 2020 season begins next week in Coral Gables."

And if the Canes lose one of the next three home games, the Canes might be effectively eliminated from the Coastal Division race
