Huff and Cam Williams are academic red shirts.
Don't be surprised if Linegard jumps ship. If he does their is no loyalty. It's gotten to be like a bunch of brats, that don't get their way, they pout or run away. Don't know the situation but unless he had an ACL tear last year, dam he should of been back yesterday from most other knee surgery.

From what I read, he wasn't able to step back onto the practice field until August. DJ, Cam, and Burns are probably ahead of him by default.

I'm fine with holding him out for another week or two and make certain he's up to speed. It's a long season, and we're still thin at HB. Burns has a injury history, so if Cam or DJ go down we're going to need Lorenzo.

BigWindyCane

A win is a win. Hopefully, it’s something to build on. I thought the starters and backups played well. JT isn’t the #1 receiver, it’s OSBORN. I wanted to see more explosive plays from our starters. DeeJay was great, and the OL is steadily getting better.

It was good to see that Pope and WIGGINS can be explosive. HARLEY also had an explosive play.

I got a chance to see that Jarren is still a split second hesitant, and IMO, Jarren has to see the receiver is open before he throws it. That must change against better opponents, and I think it will as Jarren learns to trust his teammates and the offense.

BigWindyCane

Payton made a nice catch too. Hopefully, Pope is ok

BigWindyCane

Watching the FSU v Virginia game. If the Canes don’t continue to improve, I think we are going to have a hard time beating both teams

They’ve improved I think in each game, which is certainly what you want to see. VA...as a coach would you agree?

A win is good for the kids...fans..coaches....but it is hard to hide gaping holes against good teams. Tony I saw the end of the FSU game and was sad to see the Noles lose.

NOT!

Go Canes!!

Ahhh myslf imposed ban is officially over.

Good win yesterday. We executed out game plan, the young guys got some burn and the offense, particularly the offensive line, got some much needed reps in.

As far as last week at UNC goes...that was your Mulligan Manny, end of story. No more giving games away like that. Period.

In that game, our young team got punched in the mouth early by a hyped team at home. The rest of that game plyed out like I thought it would. They battled back like an old time Canes team, outscoring them 23-3 (should have been 28-3) to have that game in hand, only to piss it away on that absurd 4th and 17 play.

Unacceptable. As are the mind boggling, self inflicted, game changing errors this team continued to commit. Eradicating those plays should have been priority #1 for this staff and they failed.

Don't get a PAT blocked, field a fair catch on a punt, make a chip shot field goal, catch a 2 point conversion, stop a 4th and 17.

If they had just done the basic requirements of their jobs, we are 3-0 not 1-2. Not all of that falls on the coaches. The players needed to execute fundamental plays they've been doing their entire lives.

Anyway, four more at home to keep ironing things out and building on the little bit of postive momentum this blowout created.

Don't F it up Manny and Co.

AeroCane

Makes me sick we lost to the Effing gators and Felipe franks

BigWindyCane

For the offense, I liked seeing the explosive plays out of the run game and pass game. Still need better third down and red zone conversions, but I saw some steps forward.

DeeJay showed once again he is a consistent threat to score in the run game. Pope, WIGGINS and Harley showed explosive plays in the passing game (Pope would have scored if the long pass wasn’t underthrown). OSBORN is Mr. Reliable and Payton showed great hands and catch radius down the middle of the field.

Enos has some weapons to work with. Let’s see if Enos can build on what we saw yesterday when we take on CMU next week

Well, we beat a very poor FCS team that basically beat themselves at every turn. (Penalties, dropped passes, etc., etc.)

We had "flashes" of good play, but still many unanswered questions as far as I am concerned...

FINALLY saw some offensive variety...aka. jet sweeps, but it's really hard to gauge our progress, when we're playing competition of THAT level.

All-in-all... "ho hum" is the level of excitement I am feeling this morning. No mention of the Canes on either SportsCenter or College Football Final... as it should be... We're irrelevant in the national picture right now, (as is the ACC in general, save for Clemson.)

Hope our players and coaches continue to work hard and get ready for the "few" meaningful games remaining on our schedule. Only time will tell...

Sure hope Lorenzo Lingard is OK... He could be a game changer for us in the future.

Happy for the walk-on Jimmy Murphy... wish the entire squad worked as hard as this kid.

Looks like they should have hired an OFFENSIVE "analyst" this week. LOL.

BigWindyCane

I agree RoachCane. Jimmy Murphy was probably the story of the day as far as Enos is concerned. Getting the hardest working player a TD is significant, and will be a valuable lesson to others.

BigWindyCane

As for the defense, turnovers, tackles for loss and sacks are down so far this season, but the run defense is solid. The pass defense has been horrible, but played a little better and showed signs. Safety play needs to improve, and it appears Knowles (believe it or not) plays better than Carter and Hall. Boy do we miss Derrick Smith (transferred) and Bolden (eligibility issues). The freshman Keontra Smith looks the part, but not sure he is ready yet.

Indeed. But in the soon to come world where surging college tuition costs (Baylor for instance went from $9K/yr in 1990 to $69K/yr in 2017) comes into conflict with salary expenses for college football teams that also comes into conflict with the next economic downturn - something will give.

I could envision NFL teams sponsoring select colleges - like the Atlanta Falcons providing $5M/year to the Alabama Crimson Tide. I still think Miami might be reasonably positioned with their national brand and the fact that it is a private institution, not subject to state budgets and budget deficits.

Herald:
"Lingard is not listed on the two-deep depth chart, but would have likely gotten to play in the blowout in Miami Gardens if he was healthy. Diaz said the sophomore suffered an injury in practice this week, however it is not connected to the knee injury which cut short Lingard’s freshman season in 2018."

Saw someone say on Twitter that he had concussion-like symptoms after practice.

Hillview Cane...we will see what happens. I know that you WANT it to happen, that much is clear. I am in the opposite camp, which is also clear.

There seems to be two different approaches right now: 1. Let the players make money if they can (Cali); OR 2. Pay the players a wage, stipend or salary (SC).

The Cali law passed and the SC bill is being presented for a vote but has not yet passed and may or may not. Which do you favor and why?

This! I'm not sure if UM has the right to push back on scheduling, but UM has not been the team that ESPN and the ACC has been thrusting into these kickoff classics and whatnot since 2003.

Until we are truly "back" then let the other ACC teams carry that load. We need to fix this s*** for real before we agree to those games that do nothing for our program and only benefit the broadcast networks and the ACC bottom line. Don't we open against Alabama next year? It's stupid given the State of the U.

Yea wait til 9/4/21 when we play Bama.....CMD might get fired like AlPa if we take one on the nose...ouch!
I just do not like any of the bigger college teams playing these childrens teams.....we should be playing other ACC teams instead....we should play Clemson Syracuse BC Wake instead of beating these sandlot teams and acting like its something big. I find it embarrassing to celebrate a with over a little team...they do it for the money....we do it to pad our record and stats.....sad way to play football. You dont need a tuneup game, you need to play an equal or better team...to get better....not get hyped about beating a team with no business being on the same field. Now a Boise or Appy State or a Utah might really get us our ass kicked.....but thats competition. JMO regarding a very average lackluster non fundamental executing program. We are very average at best right now...tough to watch this brand of football.

I'm not celebrating the win, I just think UM hasn't been ready for primetime for years. As CGNC said if we were playing UNC this Saturday instead of last week we'd be in a better position to win the game.

BEFORE YOU GET TOO EXCITED...

Temple’s 20-17 win on Saturday over then-No. 21 Maryland hasn’t earned the Owls a Top 25 ranking, but it did enable them to pick up points in both the Associated Press and USA Today polls.

Temple earned seven points in the AP poll, which would have placed the Owls tied for No. 33. The Owls also earned seven points in the USA Today coaches poll, which placed them 35th.

TonyCane

Miami's estimated scholarship roster total stands at 78 players. This includes four walk-ons who were granted scholarships within the last twelve months. So where does this stand historically? Let's exclude the walk-ons, and do an apples to apples comparison:

2019: 74 players
2018: 80 players
2017: 77 players
2016: 76 players
2015: 83 players
2014: 72 players
2013: 74 players
2012: 79 players
2011: 77 players
2010: 83 players
2009: 72 players

So only twice in a decade did the Hurricanes even approach the 85 man scholarship limit. Why is this? Let's look at attrition entering each season:

2019: 31 players
2018: 21 players
2017: 25 players
2016: 27 players
2015: 16 players
2014: 26 players
2013: 25 players
2012: 31 players
2011: 22 players
2010: 15 players
2009: 31 players

Five times in a decade we have seen more players depart than the Hurricanes can sign in a class. Against 95 players signed over the last four years, we've lost 104 players. Here we see the impact of three coaching regimes in five years take effect.

And another stat - of our signing classes how quickly did they attrit out? The numbers at times are grim, particularly during the Shannon and Golden eras. Focusing on players who left within one or two years of National Signing Day:

2018: 25 signed, 06 depart (24% departure rate)
2017: 25 signed, 05 depart (20% departure rate)
2016: 21 signed, 08 depart (38% departure rate)
2015: 25 signed, 08 depart (32% departure rate)
2014: 29 signed, 08 depart (28% departure rate)
2013: 21 signed, 05 depart (24% departure rate)
2012: 34 signed, 14 depart (41% departure rate)
2011: 19 signed, 07 depart (37% departure rate)
2010: 29 signed, 10 depart (34% departure rate)
2009: 19 signed, 02 depart (11% departure rate)
2008: 32 signed, 09 depart (28% departure rate)

The rapid attrition has smashed Miami's ability to build veteran leadership and sapped the organization's efforts to build depth. This is something that has to be lowered under Diaz.

So where does that leave us in 2020? We have a likely 11 players who will be leaving due to graduation. Four additional players - four of the 2019 transfers (Osbourne, Kennedy, Hill and Nnoruka)- will also graduate. Couple these fifteen players with the seven open scholarships, and we should have at minimum TWENTY TWO players to sign in 2020. Early departures to the NFL by players such as Dee Jay Dallas and Jeff Thomas will open additional slots. The key to getting above 80 will be avoiding a wave of transfers after NSD.

FIRST YEAR COACH FROM NORTHERN ILLINOIS BEATS #21 RANKED TEAM IN 2ND GAME AT TEMPLE:

Rod Carey, who served six years as the head coach at Northern Illinois University, was named Temple University’s head football coach on January 11, 2019.

Carey, who was named NIU’s head coach in December 2012, has coached the Huskies in six bowl games, including leading the Mid-American Conference power against Florida State in the 2013 Discover Orange Bowl. He has compiled a 52-30 won-loss record at NIU with an impressive 38-10 record in conference play.

“We are very happy to announce that Rod Carey will take over as the next Temple head football coach,” said Temple University Director of Athletics Dr. Patrick Kraft. “Rod is a proven winner with a history of success as a head coach at the FBS level. He has won four regular season titles and two MAC Championships at Northern Illinois while taking the Huskies to six bowl games, including the 2013 Orange Bowl. He has also recruited and coached All-American players at NIU.

"He possesses all of the qualities you want to see in a person and in a coach. He is a quality man of great character and a caring individual. He is the perfect person to keep Temple Football’s momentum moving forward.”

Ok I see the potential disaster looming with Temple.

Their bitter hatred for Manny Diaz, the guy that tells his recruits they must be loyal to The U after committing and close their recruiting visits.
. Not to be confused with Manny Diaz the scumbag that fled Philadelphia in the middle of the night and left 80 Temple players without a coach, with no warning.

I have only read the summeries and would have to see the product but I think I like the SC product better becuase it appears to guarentee more athletes will get some form of compensation in that system since the schools will pay something in addition to allowing outside compensation.

I have a question do you think athletes aren't getting paid at Clemson?
