First!

AeroCane

I say no!
It’s amateur athletics
They are already living better than any other kid on campus ie free tuition, room, food and tutoring - leaving school with no debt and a degree!
If they want to ‘get paid’ more, then come to the U which has a higher tuition than let’s say Alabama, Florida, FSU etc
JMO at 5:00 AM

raizecane

show me the money......

solarcane

I think they should not only get paid,
I would experiment with letting them sub contract actually playing in games.
Let them hire a guy to go to class, and another guy to practice and play in games.

HillviewCane

I don't know how we can seriously call it amateur when coaches are making 10 million a year and billions have been made in ad revenue.

Serious question do you think athletes at Clemson get paid? I remember when they started getting 4 and 5 stars all of a sudden and wondering, "why in the world would you go to Clemson?"

Go Canes!!

Lingard back this week, Bolden vs Virginia Tech.

Enos mojo
ACC passing percentage
#1 Williams Miami
#3 Perry Miami

BigWindyCane1

Mark Pope had 3 receptions for 92 yards, as well as a 21-yard run that came on a ‘jet’ sweep.

"Pope made all those plays while playing just 11 snaps on offense against Bethune-Cookman. According to Pro Football Focus, Pope graded out as the best Hurricane on the offensive side of the ball on Saturday."

BigWindyCane1

Wiggins looked pretty fast on his jet sweep, and Hightower also looked good catching the ball. Payton made an outstanding catch across the middle, and also had a nice run after the catch.

The Canes have a nice crew of backup receivers. JT4 and Osborne are solid starters, but the backups seemed to play as well, if not better against Bethune. This Enos offense is set up to produce big plays, and gifted playmakers make big plays. I am anxious to see how (or if) the young WRs are utilized from this game forward.

IraqiCane

I also say no, and I also do not agree with any coaches getting paid millions of dollars that come from tax payers.

The Game this Past Saturday accomplished 3 Main Objectives (Even though the less traveled Road Variety) 1. Won by at least 56 points(63-0 Final Me Like A Lot). 2. Hartley, Pope, Hodges, Wiggins, Got plenty of Burn and Performed Well( A Sight For Sore Eyes). 3. Perry came in and played well. Martell played and so many others got to Play. Love That Robert Knowles has stepped his Game Up. And The Icing On That Beautiful Orange and Green 🍰 was Jimmy Murphy Touchdown and Team Celebrating It. College Athletics at it's Finest. I actually missed the unfortunately I was Heading to Flannigan's. But was listening to it on WQAM. Thank U Go Canes again for the Great Tickets Brotha! KYCane always a pleasure hanging with U Brotha! I hate I missed CGWPB formerly known as CGNC. Look forward to seeing U Maniacs again this Saturday at The Rock Daddy Woooo! Go Canes! Beat CMU!

CGNC

Loved that Bethune-Cookman band!

Posted by: BigWindyCane | September 15, 2019 at 11:27 AM

Did you see when they made a horse?! Also, every time our band would play they would drown us out with their 24 tubas, it was really funny

CGNC

I don't really know what the college players get, but they could probably use more. Some of them come from really poor backgrounds. And some have kids, like Deejay.

TSully - we got there around 3:30 - where does everyone park? How is Kenny? Am I the blogger formerly known as CGNC?

See everyone next weekend!

How much should Jimmy Murphy get paid? Can you even believe that he is playing college football and NOT getting paid??? How abusive!

I wonder as he was running in the ball for his TD: "What is this score worth in dollars? I am due a raise now that I scored!"

Supposedly the peak number that I've seen bandied about is $250K for a certain prominent 5 star recruit who did not go to the ACC this year.

CGNC Yesssss I Call U CGWPB Now Formerly known as CGNC. KYCane and Myself got their around 2:00. Kenny wasn't there but is supposed to be there this Saturday. Lol Yeah BCU band did drown our Band out lol! Love BCU Band they were jamming the whole time.

Posted by: TonyCane | September 16, 2019 at 01:27 PM

If the "big boys" are paying 250k for blue chip recruits then we are officially Georgia Tech and/or Army now, both of which have 5 historical "Natty's" of their own.

solarcane

SMU was so far ahead of the curve when it comes to players getting a paycheck in 2020

" besides the 47,000 dollars, eight of those players were paid an additional $14,000 from September to December 1986. The slush fund was due to be discontinued when the 13 players had all left the school. These payments were made with the full knowledge and approval of athletic department staff. "

Sarasota 'cane

Imagine telling a recruit,

"If you come to OSU we will guarantee you 10,000 autograph signings at $100/each and 40,000 jersey sales at $20/each!"

"They said that?" Well we here at Florida will guarantee you 20,000 autograph signings at $200/each and 50,000 jersey sales at $30/each!"

It's untenable and unenforceable.

86Cane

How many players will "hold out" of Spring practice for more $$$? I know I would and sleep in.

HillviewCane

Well on a positive note. Maybe more of this would have delayed the legal steps being taken now.

Honestly if it was truly amateur it wouldn't bother me. Your softball league etc is amateur. Coaches, admin etc volunteering. Sure. However there is too much money for football and basketball to even joke in that manner.

ACC Rookie Player of The Week
Jarren Williams Qb Miami Hurricanes

TNM

solarcane

ROOKIE – Jarren Williams, Miami, R-Fr., QB, Lawrenceville, Ga.
Williams delivered a standout performance in the first win of his career in Saturday’s 63-0 win over Bethune-Cookman, finishing near 80 percent on completions (19 of 24) with a career-high three touchdowns and no interceptions • Williams, who had a career-long 54-yard pass in the win, has thrown six touchdowns and zero interceptions to start his career

VfB_Cane

Re: Williams

Level 1: People will know your name if your stats are looking good.
Level 2: You will be be respected if you win games, again and again.
Level 3: Admiration comes when you have both, the numbers and the wins.
Level 4: You will become a legend if you win on the biggest stage, preferrably a championship.

Dorsey was the last Hurricane QB to get to Level 4, since Brock Berlin no one has risen above Level 1.

Terrance Sullivan

VFB stop that nonsense right now!

Terrance Sullivan

2003 our Team was stacked NFL Record 6 First Round Draft Picks Brock Berlin 12 TD's 17 Ints sure we went 11-2 because of Brock Berlin Great Play that Year. Possibly one of the worst takes on this blog in recent memory! Brock Berlin last year here he had good statical year 22 TD'S to 6 INTs but the Team finished 9-4. Brock Berlin Stats at Miami 34 TD'S to 23 INTs and U pumping that F Bleep Up. Get All The Way The Bleep Outta Here. Love Double B but that's F Bleep U and others are talking VFB. Stop It Now.

86Cane

Whoever pissed in Terrance's Wheaties please report to the principal's office. Bring your playbook.

Terrance Sullivan

Soupster Just Calling A Spade A Spade Brotha. 34 TD'S to 23 INTs ain't even Good Stats that's Malik Rosier Territory and no one considers him Great. The Talent U have around U makes a Huge Difference. Just Keeping It 💯.

VfB_Cane

TSully - read again before your blood pressure goes to unhealthy levels LOL

Where did I say that Berlin was exceptional? On my scale, Berlin may have been level 2 (double digit wins + OK stats).
All I said was that no one has been better than Level 1 ever since. Wright, Harris, Morris, Kaaya etc. -- that's where the nonsense starts.

VfB_Cane

And, if you ask me (you didn't, but anyway), the U has had 8 great QBs: Mira, Kelly, Kosar, Testaverde, Walsh, Erickson, Torretta, Dorsey.
Thers's a considerable drop-off after that.
So claiming that Berlin has been one of the better one's among that rest is not saying much, IMO.

86Cane

TSully...lighten up Francis!

Terrance Sullivan

Okay cool. Sounds like a plan. See some of U on Saturday! My Fault for actually thinking we were having a legitimate discussion since it's just for Kicks and Giggles I nominate Malik Rosier and Kyle Wright for this list as well lol.

VfB_Cane

If half reading my posts, then shouting "Nonsense" all over the place is a "legitimate discussion" to you, fine. I'm outta here.

roachcane77

I say pay ALL athletes the same, at EVERY school, and EVERY level... regardless of their gender, or sport.

Pay them enough to take the place of a part-time job that they would be able to have if they had the time, or were allowed to work during their seasons...
No bonuses for particular positions, or success of their program.

I also hate hearing about our Olympic athletes having to work at Home Depot because they can't pay their bills. Their hours training should be compensated. They are representing our country, and competing against "professional" athletes from most of the other "State sponsored" athletes around the world. Most of them are NOT in high profile sports that gain them "sponsors."

That's my opinion.

Terrance Sullivan

It's all good. It's over. Let's Kick CMU Arse Saturday! Go Canes!

solarcane

Mentioning all the Cane legend Qbs
They get better the farther into the past they dwell

Testeverde 48 tds
Walsh 48 tds
Toretta 47 tds
Kosar 40 tds
Harris 70 tds Yea 70

Dorsey completion pct 57
Harris 60

Walsh and Dorsey are my all time favorites but they had way better offensive lines than anybody

No telling where J12 really ranks but he was really just as talented as some national champ qbs here.
I'm just sayin

Windy I was thinking the same thing lol,
I just posted something about Qbs just to try and get them going again.

BigWindyCane

Enos is looking like the “QB Whisperer “ that the Canes have been looking for. Williams gets freshman of the week completing 79% of his passes in a game, and Perry is at70%. No one thought this would be possible at this stage. Kudos to Enos and the offensive staff, and they have only scratched the surface.

#CoachingMatters!

Go Canes!!

Excellent post.

Revenue sharing where the players who do everything they're asked to do, including graduating, should get a piece of the billions others are making off them.

Go Canes!!

On a side note, the best QB, while at UM, not after in the pros, is Bernie Kosar.

Dude was clutch, had swag coming out of his pores, was smart and was a winner.

solarcane

Go,
yea I think you are right about Kosar being smart he seemed to be calling his own plays at times out there to me.
Getting the Flutie deal and The Maryland comeback must still piss him off, he was a real competitor.
He hasn't aged well I hope he is doing OK

solarcane

Enos

"If the opportunity presents itself and it's an unbelievable opportunity, I would certainly consider it. But again, I'm very, very happy doing what I've been doing"

FSU a few?

solarcane

I think Enos runs the score up against his old school Saturday after reading this.

“The big reason I left was that the president at the time and the administration—I was putting my heart and soul into the program and they were not putting their heart and soul into Dan Enos, if you will,” Enos said. “When you put your heart and soul into something, and you give it everything you have, you want people giving you that same type of backup in return. "

BRIAN FLORES TRADED TO NEW ENGLAND

Miami, FL (AT) - Following a breakth taking day that saw the Miami Dolphins trade 2018 first round draft choice Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Dolphins announced forty minutes later that they had traded head coach Brian Flores to New England for a 2020 third round draft choice.

DallasTX Cane

Posted by: solarcane | September 16, 2019 at 03:16 PM

Seriously depressing. Can U imagine being a season ticket holder?

DallasTX Cane

Really hard to compare QB’s across different eras as the game changes. “Pro style” used to mean a vertical passing game - higher risk higher reward than the dink&dunk passing the San Francisco O introduced. Philosophies have changed so much that it’s better to compare to contemporaries than try across eras.

But.... Kelly was the best overall. NFL HOF. Put U on the big boy map. Kosar did the most with the least - most success with least physical talent. Highest football IQ. Had more success in the League than people recall. My 2 personal favs

Sarasota 'cane

What's happening to the Dolphins had to be done.

I'm fully on-board with what they're doing for their future. It's a dumpster fire and it's been a dumpster fire for years.

They have so many draft picks next year (14 total, 3 in the 1st round)) don't be surprised if they opt to trade a few more of them. And they're stacked in 2021 as well.

The Dolphins org should've done this after Wannstedt was fired. That's how long this "open wound" has been festering.

Cut the head off...

FIVE STAR FOLLIES...

Early life
A native of Miramar, Florida, Howard attended Miramar High School. Playing wide receiver as a freshman,[1] he was one of the targets of quarterback Geno Smith. He was converted to defensive back in his sophomore year and remained at that position. Regarded as a five-star recruit by Rivals.com, Howard was listed as the No. 1 cornerback prospect in his class.[2]

Professional career
Cleveland Browns
After going undrafted in the 2016 NFL draft, Howard signed with the Cleveland Browns on May 5, 2016.[3] He played in 15 games with three starts recording 20 tackles and one pass defended.

On April 20, 2017, Howard was released by the Browns.[4]

Jacksonville Jaguars
On April 21, 2017, Howard was claimed off waivers by the Jacksonville Jaguars.[5] He was waived on September 2, 2017 and was signed to the practice squad the next day.[6][7] He was released on September 8, 2017.

Miami Dolphins
On December 21, 2017, Howard was signed to the Miami Dolphins' practice squad.[8] He signed a reserve/future contract with the Dolphins on January 1, 2018.[9] He was waived by the Dolphins on May 10, 2018 with a failed physical.[10]

alpine

fins talk: driving off one of your best players by making him learn 6 positions is not a great way to begin

alpine

not just a great player; "minkah" was also the best name in the locker room

Sarasota 'cane

The Dolphins may crap the bed but it won't be for lack of trying.

The Cleveland Browns seem to be on the right track with their franchise QB and a ton of draft picks.

Miami has been a middle of the road team since Shula left. They were "too good" to get a crack at the top prospects and they have been paying too much for free agents as well.

They need a new nucleus of talent and they have decided to do it from the ground up. When Johnson traded Hershel Walker and brought in Troy Aikman they only won one game their first year. They were "popping bottles" 2-3 years later.

And with the # of picks they have amassed in 2020 and 2021 they can move up and down the draft board as needed for years just like the Patriots do.

There are no guarantees that this will pan out, but they are at least making the effort to find a real solution.

alpine

re: sarasota post
- in my 1st post i should've also mentioned, that i am totally on board with the current philosophy of remaking the roster and getting picks ... i just suddenly got a bad feeling in my stomach watching this minkah-thing go down
- i'm also a kenyan drake fan and am disappointed he's not being used more
- i admit to being pleasantly surprised that the defense made so much improvement between the 1st and 2nd game

solarcane

ESPN

Amongst all the Power Five schools in the country, the FPI ranks Miami's remaining schedule as the easiest in the country.

If you think this years schedule is a joke you are going to love next years.

Terrance Sullivan

I see no difference in 2019 or 2020 schedule. I mean I say 10-3 next year. I am not overly impressed with our Roster. Just Keeping It 100! We are a Average Football Team! That can be a Good Football Team! We are Not A Great Team and We Darn Sure Not A Championship Team. Championship Teams Top Tier(Clemson,Alabama), Second Tier(Oklahoma, Ohio State, LSU, Georgia) Third Tier(Auburn, Texas, Notre Dame). Then U have the Great Teams which are about 10-16. We could get to a Great Team status next year between 10-16 like 2017. But Best we can do this year is get to Good Status like Top 25(like in 2016). Maybe get into Great Status Next Year like 15th.I hope to be wrong but I dont see Championship Status at best until 2021.Go Canes! Beat CMU!

sully,
There is no comparison between this years team and next years as far as experience goes.
Jarren will be a second year starter next season.

the offensive line will be much better.
the running backs will be fine, the receivers will be elite.

Diaz will be in his second year HC.
We will start the season ranked.

You dont see Wagner being half the team Bethune is, or Michigan State being half the team Florida is?

Wake Forest is the hardest team we play next season. We shouldn't be surprised by them like teams are this year.

This is about as easy a schedule as I ever remember playing
That doesn't guarantee we don't fk up though.

VA Cane

a penny for your thoughts solar reckon Ray was doing "The Dance of The Dead?" Ray was a great Cane and player, but his false narrative and fake crap is far too much for me to watch or listen to. Fact is he was involved in a murder, hew settled with families, and got away with it.

I always have said Rohan ST26, Ed Reed, Shock, Dan Morgan JV and KD11 are my favs....Rohan was incredible!!!! Ray was great got his signature in Bburg in the day....but character is not his thing.

Good points TSully....we open 0-1 in 21 Bama....but we can get better....we been saying it a long time now...getting better....I hope so. Not encouraged by playing these weak teams but you do what ya got to do.

solarcane

VA
This will be the most unpopular thing ever posted on Canespace.

Lewis and Irvin are two of the all time Miami football greats, that said

I have always thought Ray Lewis and Micheal Irvin are 100 percent all about themselves.

They use their Cane legacy mostly to stay in the spotlight.

They know what to say and how to act in front of Cane fans and the camera for sure.

Their off the field in private antics are mostly swept under the rug by sports fans.

Rohan Marley is the real deal. Every bit as ferocious as Lewis. Marley has given so many people jobs with fair wages, donated his money to his community and none of it done in the public's eye.

When Irvin or Lewis are doing or giving something you can bet they will have a press conference before and after.

This is just my honest opinion

I agree with you about Jimi Hendrix.
When people compare this guy to that guy about being the best at something there can always be arguments made for different folks.

There are only two exceptions to this in my book
Jimi Hendrix and Muhammad Ali

Sarasota, Miami has chances for greatness but completely flubbed then away:

2001: Draft a CB instead of Drew Brees, when CB was the best position in the team
2006: Trade for an injury ruined Dante Culpepper as QB instead of signing FA Drew Brees
2008: Draft an offensive lineman #1 overall instead of Matt Ryan
2017: Draft Charles Harris instead of DeSean Watson
2018: Draft Minkah instead of Lamar Jackson

In addition, they’ve had terrible allocation of resources:

2002-2004: Three first round draft choices and one third rounder on HBs!
2004-2009: Five second round draft choices on QBs. Only one (Chad Henne) lasts more than two seasons

Sarasota 'cane

well done, making his p'nut gallery!

during those years, i watched a lot of saturday a.m. cartoons, but during the week i played with army men in the morning (pre-kindergarten times)
. . . and unless sick, i seldom hit up the skipper chuck/capt. kangaroo/mr. rogers scene

too bad, cause skipper chuck came to the church i went to (univ. baptist in coral gables) ... something about a parade and floats and such ... i didn't get so excited, but my parents did ... so somewhere at the bottom of a box in the attic is a photo of me & dahlia & skipper chuck on a small ferris wheel

... later on, i accidentally threw a rock thru a church window while trying to impress that same dahlia girl
... there's more chemistry to pre-pubescence than people give credit to
