Im thinking the next Hurricane watch party should be hosted by alpine......

Posted by: raizecane | September 19, 2019 at 07:58 AM

host of a "hurricane watch party??!!

- i assume i would yell, "WATCH out alabama!"?

- or maybe you're talking about one of those parties where everyone's looking at their watches, trying to figure out who has the most time?

- or, . . . well, maybe i let you explain what this is and what a host does

. . . i'm not sure if this comment is a backhanded compliment or a really smooth way to say "shut up"

solarcane

alpine,

I really enjoy your wit and your perspective on the Canes and life in general.

The more people share their opinions the more interesting the blog becomes.

There are a few folks on here with tremendous first hand history of the rise and fall of the Canes.

There are folks on here that could blow people away doing stand up.

There are people on here that can share knowledge about just about anything.

Glad you are here.

Alpine,
Yeah we do have have those guys coming back in the secondary but I would think most teams probably carry 14 to 16 total DB's. At present I think we have maybe 10.

Posted by: Herbieibis | September 18, 2019 at 06:05 PM

i see your point, but we were supposed to have 14 ... then nigel bethel and, surprisingly, derrick smith hit the road ... and the ncaa was able to use bolden as a proxy for shackling the canes once again ... so we're down to 11 1/2

next year we lose knowles, finley and probably bandy = @ 9 returnees; hopefully, we'll streak the rest of this year and that'll help us in the 'cruiting game

alpine

that mini-rb, who made the last TD: murphy

Harry Miller

Terrance, I went to all most all the games in 1955 and 1956 when Andy was the coach, Sam Scarnecchia was QB and my favorite player Don Bosseler was fullback back. He was all american and drafted by the Washington Redskins who then became my favorite
NFL team.
Those were really great years.

Whenever Travis Homer or DJ Dallas pull off a real long run, I always feel they are going to get run down at about the 5 yard line, and we shall.

Wouldn't have to rely on the kicker so much if we wouldn't choke inside the 20. Not counting the Betty Cookman game.
Posted by: Herbieibis | September 18, 2019 at 06:05 PM

I am SO SICK of KNOWING, that if a long run gets stopped on the 3 yd line, or an interception goes out at the 1 yd line, (instead of taking it all the way in... ), it will only result in a "TRY" for 3 points. It's truly sickening...
Our Red Zone, and 3rd down offense, is OFFENSIVE... (in a poop smell way.)

Something you would probably never know about if you weren't a Canespace family member

Alpine,
Yeah we do have have those guys coming back in the secondary but I would think most teams probably carry 14 to 16 total DB's. At present I think we have maybe 10.
At LB maybe Jennings will make it back. Wilder is gone and Steed had his second severe knee I jury.
For at least the last 3 years, we've been getting by with razor thin depth at corner.
Now getting to that no chip shot making Baxa. If I'm not mistaken he missed a makeable FG against LSU but can't recall for sure.
Doesn't matter, the dude has the tips. Ain't no ice water Tru Dem veins. Shyts done melted before he trots on the field. This would be a good game to let the back up kicker try one.
Wouldn't have to rely on the kicker so much if we wouldn't choke inside the 20. Not counting the Betty Cookman game.

things to think about before going to bed:
how can a guy with 9 letters in his name have 7 of those letters be "a" or "b"? the other 2 letters: a "u" and an "x"

doesn't seem possible, but check out our kicker

g'nite! (european time)

alpine

herb, LB definitely looks thin:
patrick joyner, sam brooks & avery huff is all

except for the twilight zone three:
waynmon steed, bradley jennings, de*andre wilder

i think at least one is already gone; maybe two? can't keep track of them and don't count on ever seeing them
they shouldn't have gone swimming in Injury Sea, without taking off the concrete shoes they were wearing

alpine

cgnc: appreciate it (tips his cap)

alpine

herb, regarding CB:
even if bandy goes pro next year, we have:
d.j.ivey & al blades come back + keontra smith, te'cory couch & christian williams . . . not huge depth, but not huge concern yet, unless injuries hit again
would be cool to have bandy return, though

OL: hadn't really thought about that, go
. . . but next year, since george brown already jetson'd out, we only lose tommy kennedy (seems debatable whether that will really be a loss)

- strange statistic (and not including kennedy, since he's a transfer):
only 2 of the 5 OL, who have been hurricanes for 3 yrs. are starters (donaldson & gaynor); then we have a 2-yr. guy in d.j. scaife and the two fresh yearlings

That's the message The Herb got from listening to Manny early on, play his players and the ones busting their tails and run the ones off who ain't die hard Canes. He is basically playing for the next 2 years. What ever good comes from this year is what it is. Our Dee line at tackle is average at the present and we need an up grade in quality. Got plenty of bodies, Finally but is there anyone on the roster that is a disruptive force? To thin at CB, DE and Lb. See help coming at DE but quality at DB and LB for 2020 I don't see, Yet!

We can actually do it and maybe have it be one of the strengths of our team for the first time in a loooong time.

Terrance Sullivan

Here is something that I didn't know and I am embarrassed that I didn't know this but not Surprised considering the Great Grandfather of UM Football Andy Gustafason 1956 Miami Hurricanes went 8-1-1 in old Burdine Stadium(1937-1959) and finished with the #6 Ranking in The Nation! Our 1954 Miami Hurricanes Team Finished #9 in The Country That Year with a 8-1 Record! Charlie Tate 1966 Miami Hurricanes in The Orange Bowl(1959-2007) finished 8-2-1 and Number 9 Final Ranking! Then Howard Schnellenburger 1981 Miami Hurricanes Finished #8 in the Nation with a 9-2 Record(I thought this was our Highest Final Rated Team Pre 1983 National Title Season also under Howard(The GrandFather of UM Football). I am glad to be wrong and to be stand corrected. I love to go back and check our History and Look at the stats and Figures. U don't know where you are going unless you know where you have been. From Tamiami park to Moore Park to Burdine Stadium(Orange Bowl) to Joe Robbie Stadium(Hard Rock Stadium) From Cub Back to Manny Diaz, This is the 94th Season of Miami Hurricanes Football and let's see how it unfurls. We didn't start out as A Blue Blood Program we were the Outsiders but when you Play for 10 National Titles in 20 Years(1983-2002) winning 5 Of Them(1983,1987,1989,1991,2001) and having several other Top 5 and Top 10 Teams plus the Cultural Impact on the College Sports and Sports Landscape as a Whole. This Small Private University in Coral Gables(Suburban Miami) is unbelievable. The Goal Is To Get Back to Greatness again and only Smart Leadership,Hard Work, Attention to Details, Incorporating the Fan Base, Alums, and Hurricane Family around the Nation, will that be accomplished Again! Go Canes!

DAMN, that Pirate is SMART!

solarcane

Mike Leach on things Mark Richt never quite got.

There’s nothing balanced about the 50 percent run, 50 percent pass because that’s 50 percent stupid. When you have five skill positions, if all five of them are contributing to the offensive effort, then that’s balanced. But this notion that if you hand it to one guy 50 percent of the time and you throw it to a combination of two guys 50 percent and you’re really balanced, then you proudly pat yourself on the back and tell yourself that, well then you’re delusional

solarcane

Stuff Windy likes

"Dallas is averaging 15.7 yards per carry on those outside runs to the left.

too bad, cause skipper chuck came to the church i went to (univ. baptist in coral gables) ... something about a parade and floats and such ... i didn't get so excited, but my parents did ... so somewhere at the bottom of a box in the attic is a photo of me & dahlia & skipper chuck on a small ferris wheel

... later on, i accidentally threw a rock thru a church window while trying to impress that same dahlia girl

Sarasota, Miami has chances for greatness but completely flubbed then away:

2001: Draft a CB instead of Drew Brees, when CB was the best position in the team
2006: Trade for an injury ruined Dante Culpepper as QB instead of signing FA Drew Brees
2008: Draft an offensive lineman #1 overall instead of Matt Ryan
2017: Draft Charles Harris instead of DeSean Watson
2018: Draft Minkah instead of Lamar Jackson

In addition, they’ve had terrible allocation of resources:

2002-2004: Three first round draft choices and one third rounder on HBs!
2004-2009: Five second round draft choices on QBs. Only one (Chad Henne) lasts more than two seasons

This will be the most unpopular thing ever posted on Canespace.

Lewis and Irvin are two of the all time Miami football greats, that said

I have always thought Ray Lewis and Micheal Irvin are 100 percent all about themselves.

They use their Cane legacy mostly to stay in the spotlight.

They know what to say and how to act in front of Cane fans and the camera for sure.

Their off the field in private antics are mostly swept under the rug by sports fans.

Rohan Marley is the real deal. Every bit as ferocious as Lewis. Marley has given so many people jobs with fair wages, donated his money to his community and none of it done in the public's eye.

When Irvin or Lewis are doing or giving something you can bet they will have a press conference before and after.

This is just my honest opinion

I agree with you about Jimi Hendrix.
When people compare this guy to that guy about being the best at something there can always be arguments made for different folks.

There are only two exceptions to this in my book
Jimi Hendrix and Muhammad Ali

sully,
There is no comparison between this years team and next years as far as experience goes.
Jarren will be a second year starter next season.

the offensive line will be much better.
the running backs will be fine, the receivers will be elite.

Diaz will be in his second year HC.
We will start the season ranked.

You dont see Wagner being half the team Bethune is, or Michigan State being half the team Florida is?

Wake Forest is the hardest team we play next season. We shouldn't be surprised by them like teams are this year.

This is about as easy a schedule as I ever remember playing

I see no difference in 2019 or 2020 schedule. I mean I say 10-3 next year. I am not overly impressed with our Roster. Just Keeping It 100! We are a Average Football Team! That can be a Good Football Team! We are Not A Great Team and We Darn Sure Not A Championship Team. Championship Teams Top Tier(Clemson,Alabama), Second Tier(Oklahoma, Ohio State, LSU, Georgia) Third Tier(Auburn, Texas, Notre Dame). Then U have the Great Teams which are about 10-16. We could get to a Great Team status next year between 10-16 like 2017. But Best we can do this year is get to Good Status like Top 25(like in 2016). Maybe get into Great Status Next Year like 15th.I hope to be wrong but I dont see Championship Status at best until 2021.Go Canes! Beat CMU!

Sarasota 'cane

The Dolphins may crap the bed but it won't be for lack of trying.

The Cleveland Browns seem to be on the right track with their franchise QB and a ton of draft picks.

Miami has been a middle of the road team since Shula left. They were "too good" to get a crack at the top prospects and they have been paying too much for free agents as well.

They need a new nucleus of talent and they have decided to do it from the ground up. When Johnson traded Hershel Walker and brought in Troy Aikman they only won one game their first year. They were "popping bottles" 2-3 years later.

And with the # of picks they have amassed in 2020 and 2021 they can move up and down the draft board as needed for years just like the Patriots do.

There are no guarantees that this will pan out, but they are at least making the effort to find a real solution.

alpine

not just a great player; "minkah" was also the best name in the locker room

FIVE STAR FOLLIES...

Early life
A native of Miramar, Florida, Howard attended Miramar High School. Playing wide receiver as a freshman,[1] he was one of the targets of quarterback Geno Smith. He was converted to defensive back in his sophomore year and remained at that position. Regarded as a five-star recruit by Rivals.com, Howard was listed as the No. 1 cornerback prospect in his class.[2]

Professional career
Cleveland Browns
After going undrafted in the 2016 NFL draft, Howard signed with the Cleveland Browns on May 5, 2016.[3] He played in 15 games with three starts recording 20 tackles and one pass defended.

On April 20, 2017, Howard was released by the Browns.[4]

Jacksonville Jaguars
On April 21, 2017, Howard was claimed off waivers by the Jacksonville Jaguars.[5] He was waived on September 2, 2017 and was signed to the practice squad the next day.[6][7] He was released on September 8, 2017.

Miami Dolphins
On December 21, 2017, Howard was signed to the Miami Dolphins' practice squad.[8] He signed a reserve/future contract with the Dolphins on January 1, 2018.[9] He was waived by the Dolphins on May 10, 2018 with a failed physical.[10]

They have so many draft picks next year (14 total, 3 in the 1st round)) don't be surprised if they opt to trade a few more of them. And they're stacked in 2021 as well.

The Dolphins org should've done this after Wannstedt was fired. That's how long this "open wound" has been festering.

Cut the head off...

Really hard to compare QB’s across different eras as the game changes. “Pro style” used to mean a vertical passing game - higher risk higher reward than the dink&dunk passing the San Francisco O introduced. Philosophies have changed so much that it’s better to compare to contemporaries than try across eras.

But.... Kelly was the best overall. NFL HOF. Put U on the big boy map. Kosar did the most with the least - most success with least physical talent. Highest football IQ. Had more success in the League than people recall. My 2 personal favs

Seriously depressing. Can U imagine being a season ticket holder?

BRIAN FLORES TRADED TO NEW ENGLAND

Miami, FL (AT) - Following a breakth taking day that saw the Miami Dolphins trade 2018 first round draft choice Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Dolphins announced forty minutes later that they had traded head coach Brian Flores to New England for a 2020 third round draft choice.

I think Enos runs the score up against his old school Saturday after reading this.

“The big reason I left was that the president at the time and the administration—I was putting my heart and soul into the program and they were not putting their heart and soul into Dan Enos, if you will,” Enos said. “When you put your heart and soul into something, and you give it everything you have, you want people giving you that same type of backup in return. Enos

"If the opportunity presents itself and it's an unbelievable opportunity, I would certainly consider it. But again, I'm very, very happy doing what I've been doing"

Go,
yea I think you are right about Kosar being smart he seemed to be calling his own plays at times out there to me.
Getting the Flutie deal and The Maryland comeback must still piss him off, he was a real competitor.
He hasn't aged well I hope he is doing OK

Go Canes!!

On a side note, the best QB, while at UM, not after in the pros, is Bernie Kosar.

Dude was clutch, had swag coming out of his pores, was smart and was a winner.
