The Old Miami > The New Miami

The New Miami IS the Old Miami...the OLD OLDER Miami. The ‘70’s called and said Thanks for bringing THEIR Canes back CMD!

solarcane

I think the only Legend of the Fall on this entire team is Coach David Feeley.
The Canes to me have never been able to play in the fourth quarter for a decade like they do now.
Look for a big school to hire him right off the deck of the Titanic.

DTX,
The saddest part is Burger King isn't paying your way through the gate to witness this train wreck, people are dishing out big bucks to see this trash.
Canes fans should move the tailgate to Haulover beach, party their azz off and just watch a top ten game on TV

Old Skool

I had to miss the game for a funeral on Saturday. Looks like I had a better time.

Oh my.

Already a pick 'em. Watch that line wildly oscillate like Fake Lames being left on the air strip at Pittsburgh PA after being fired in shame.

Well the present isn't a great place to be and the future is uncertain at best. Great job on the draft picks BTW. We still had some really good talent over the years and this shows it. 2004 was a record setting year in the NFL draft.

You can have them. Email me: mw32779@gmail.com

Aero - unless they get rid of Blake James, nothing will change.

Ha, I had my friend at work come in to my office, he is an FSU fan and he goes, "you have got to get rid of that AD". Even they know.

CGNC

I don't know if CMD is accepting - he is going to get back involved with the defense or so says The Herald.

BigWindyCane

@StateOfTheU
I believe the film backs this up. There were vertical shots with Jarren in the game. He just.....doesn't have the arm Kosi does

@Manny_Navarro
Asked if N'Kosi's involvement allowed for a more vertical passing game and more Jeff Thomas... "I don't know about that. The vertical plan was there from the get go." 🧐

BigWindyCane

Jarren’s problem is not just his arm. Jarren is always a split second late on deep balls because he has to see the receiver open before he throws the ball, and that delay adds about 15-20 more yards needed to make his deep throws. Jarren not only can’t make his throw earlier, he also has poor anticipation as to how to place the ball on the deep throw.

I don’t think he can make the deep throws, and I am sure all the ACC Defensive Coordinators see the same thing.

A few comments:

1. Enos has him frozen up with the "No turnover" mantra.

2. He lacks awareness and "anticipation".

3. If the FANS can see it you KNOW that the ACC DCs can see it.

Terrance Sullivan

CGNC Thank U I will do that on Wednesday. I appreciate it very much.

Lacks prototypical height to be able to see over the line down field. So you get him confirming what he thinks he glimpses over the head of the line play and by then it's too late.

He might end up a decent game manager though, and Dorsey was the king of that, so still a little early to let a shitty start to a game wave a white flag on his playing career to just this point so far.

DallasTX Cane

Food for thought:

1. It’s a team game. Many things need to be done right by many players on every play to be successful. So many things being done “less than right” by all parts of this team makes it difficult to pass judgement on individuals. How do you truly believe the great Ken Dorsey would fare playing behind this OL? But even if he would be reduced to suckage status, that doesn’t mean either current option is good or has proven anything other than the lack of ability to rise above the circumstances.

2. CMD certainly hasn’t come out of the gate full throttle. But it is also extremely rare that a 1st time HC doesn’t go through some serious growing pains. Belichick wasn’t good at Cleveland and Saban’s 1st gig wasn’t LSU. Does that mean CMD will turn out good or great? Far from it. More fail than succeed. And it hasn’t been even average so far. But to think there wouldn’t be serious growing pains and lessons learned for a guy with 0 HC experience is or was delusional. Does that make him a bad hire? Yes. In the short run definitely. Jury is out about the long run.

3. As a former Big Ugly (current also but way past my prime lol), u all have heard me preach OL many times over the past decade +. It’ll never matter how many skilled and talented “skill” players we have until the OL is fixed. And we haven’t attracted the NFL HOF level skill talent in years - that is the level that can overcome poor OL play...not to the point of carrying a team to a NC or even CC, but to top ten level. We’ve needed an average OL to reach division champ status and a really good OL to go any further. What we’ve had has been seriously below ave. What we have had this season is serious crap. Build the OL or figure out how to work around it, as in go Spread always so all they have to do is pass protect. Until we do one or the other, our offense will continue to struggle and it won’t matter who is the QB.

4. The ACC will continue to work against us - not the ACC itself, drop the conspiracy bs - as in the best players want to play against the best for the best programs. It looked for a brief moment a couple of years ago that the SEC was slipping and the ACC rising. Alas, UA, UF, UG, AU, LSU, etc. have proven otherwise. Combine those programs with the resurgence of the Big 10 - OSU never falling off, rise of Wisconsin, Penn St, Michigan as perennial underachieving but top 20, etc. and the ACC barely tops the PAC-12 in the competition to the bottom. How many top kids now want to play in the ACC?

Sorry for the length of this post. Been meaning to express some of this for a while. Great articles lately SOUP and great all around posts from Da Gang.

86Cane

DTX...good post.

86Cane

DTX...the things that make me go hmmmmm...

1. The apparent lack of game planning and preparation going into games. We come out flat way too often and with no clear strategy to start the game. We make other teams look as if they have no weaknesses and we turn first time starters into All Americans for the opposing teams. Meanwhile they make us look like a HS team because they HAVE identified our weaknesses. That is coaching plain and simple, not players.

2. As the season goes on the team should be getting better but instead it appears they are getting worse. After the UF game they two weeks to get ready for UNC. The biggest improvement in any team in any year is usually between games 1-2. But NO, not for Miami!

3. They had two weeks to for the VT game. And once again it looked like Miami never practiced, never worked on a game plan and just winged it. Next thing you know thay are down 28-0 and the game was all but lost. When was the last time we played a meaningful game against a quality opponent and were UP 28-0. Go ahead, I'll wait.

4. The OL has had numerous coaches who supposedly know what they are doing but no improvement can be found from Golden on. These players knew how to block in HS but forget when they get to college? Sure the talent they go up against is much better but still they can't all be that bad all the time. Unless we can find a way to coach or recruit our way out of this mess then we will be stuck at suck for along time. And even then you are talking 3-4 years from now by the time they develop and gain experience. And that is only IF we can recruit at that position.

Three more years of stuck at suck because the OL can't block anybody does not bode well for Manny or Miami or the fans. Gotta have something to cling to to have any hope at all. Give me something, something I can use?

alpine

dtx & 86: good posts

. . . both of you seem to have OL experience; can wither of you explain to someone who doesn't, how it's possible to have so many evidently decent bodies on the OL (some have 4 stars almost all the rest have 3), who can not be coached up to play in college? even with "very good caliber/resumé" coaches? even with past canes OL greats sometimes giving them feedback?

i'm just not getting how it's possible, that our lines CONTINUALLY seem to be worse than even the central michigans of the world . . . and this is WITHOUT being burdened by injuries

what are the coaches doing wrong? is it purely technique?

i'm beyond smh; i'm just jaw-drop, shell-shocked that this can continue & continue & continue
. . . is it something manny is doing wrong?

i'd love a whole blog on this topic and everyone can analyse, discuss, cuss, fart and anything else

THANK YOU!

Go Canes!!

Williams’ shoulder has to be bad. Not even throwing today.

solarcane

DTX good points.

I think as Canes fans our most common ailment is our patience is shot.
We have probably given numerous HCs too little time to change the culture

I think of all the coaches Manny really wants Miami to excel more than any of them.
I think he knew this was a throw away season from the get go.

In hindsight he should have canned TNM ad campaign, gone more humble, and said that it was gonna be at least three years til we really competed.

I'm on board for two more miserable seasons but with obvious progress across the board.

Lingard redshirt

I think Lorenzo has had a lot of external pressure of people trying to pull him in different directions and I thought that he came in and met was like, ‘Look I know I am not in danger of getting hurt on the field, but I also know who I am as a runner and it’s not always there.

So I think the fact that we had a great honest conversation–I love Lorenzo Lingard. He loves football. He loves Miami. He works every day in practice. I thought it showed maturity coming in and talking.”

1. I'm certainly NOT an expert but IMHO there are 5-7 obvious things that could be affecting the OL performance: talent, depth, technique, scheme, coaching, strength/conditioning, communication.

Not sure where the problem lies but it may be one of those ALL OF THE ABOVE answers to these areas of potential problems. I guess you could add play calling to the list as well. Coaches have to learn what their players are capable of, what their skill sets are and try to run plays to their strengths and to try to cover their weaknesses.

Quick example: If you know Zion is getting beat physically, or on the corner or out of his stance then you got to get him some help. Options would include lining the TE up on his outside to help block the DE, cover the outside corner and give him time to react to the snap and eliminate the problem. Another option is to line up the RB on his side next to QB in shotgun and have the RB help block the DE or at least chip him on his way out to the flat.

If you watched the Colts vs KC game on Sunday night you saw some of the best OL execution, coaching, scheme and talent on display. They used slow motion to show the pulls, traps and drive blocking the Colts OL were putting on the KC DL and it was flipping amazing.

3. The fact that this issue has gone on for so long and across players and OL coaches is simply mind boggling. I doubt anybody has an answer for this except that our recruiting has missed, missed and then missed some more but I think that is way over-simplifying the issue.

Buy again, I am no expert. And the things I mentioned above are pretty basic football 101. I will let others who know more chime in.

86Cane

i'd love a whole blog on this topic and everyone can analyse, discuss, cuss, fart and anything else

I think the 5 things are 2 tackles. 2 guards, and 1 center, replace them and you are on your way to a better o line

Go Canes!!

In my wildest imagination I never thought this o-line would be as bad as it is.

Its most likely the worst in all of the Power 5.

That being said, there is ZERO reason to EVER be down a combined 49-3 to two bad ACC teams.

Compound that with coming all the way back to take the lead late in those games, only to lose both and only one conclusion can be reached.

So far Manny’s tenure has been an epic failure.

alpine: I think that’s the $100,000 question. I don’t know the answer and evidently neither does anyone else, at least anyone we’ve hired. I will say that the OL is weird. The best ones combine good to great individual athletes with a sense of teamwork and trust that isn’t needed on the DL. Communication and smarts is vital. That’s where experience comes in. Nothing is impossible but the best OLs tend to be groups with a lot of experience that have played together (or basically together) a lot. That’s why I couldn’t figure out the decision to start a QB that’s never played squat in college behind a line starting 2 freshmen. Sure those guys are all the future but against a legit, experienced DL like UF’s?? Baptism by fire but basically telling the newest grunts to take point. Good luck not getting killed.

DallasTX Cane

Canes have been searching for identify on offense for a decade. They had identity on D but seem to have lost it. Same old same old... pray CMD is The Guy and is figuring this sheet out. Every season that goes by without forward progress makes it more difficult to get “back”. Ask USC, Nebraska, etc. and don’t be deceived that paying the players will help even the competitive landscape for The U. The CA law will benefit the big schools immensely. If I am Jerry Jones (and every school has 1 or more) and Arkansas passes a law like CA’s, it’s going to be SO easy to ensure a certain players jersey or photo or whatever is purchased thousands of times...how much “legal” $$ can we put in your pocket young man?!? It’ll dwarf the current pay scale.

Not saying players should or should not be able to benefit financially from their likeness. Just saying don’t bet on that to even the field for the little ol U

Go Canes!!

Tony is the shidz fo sho

Herbieibis

The OH lines biggest problem, no true OT. We have maybe 2 true OT's on the whole roster and they are slim and none. (Nelson and Herbert). That is what is pathetic!
Nelson, as I have said many times, is not ready, especially physically. He's at least another 25 to 30 lbs. away from having the weight he needs.
Offensively we are stuck in a dam time warp with hanging onto the pro style. THE ONLY time we should run a pro style is when we need one yard or less or inside the 5 and only for one play.
What happened to Ruelus George? Must be in Manny's cast away pile.
Da U has had trouble getting any kind of talent on both lines. Every year it's a pain staking adventure to get them and if we do get, keeping them. Lost 2 to Florida last year. Then there is development, which we can't seem to do, no matter who the coach is. This is where our big money needs to go to both line coaches, Period.
Last, we have piss poor recruiters. We have no finishers on the trail. Maybe when they are in their late 30's they may have figured it out.

Another annoying Canes Thing fact

And here’s something more recent: UM entered Saturday’s loss to the Hokies with 10 active players who were rated by ESPN among the top 100 recruits in their respective classes over the past four years. Virginia Tech entered with one - Doug Nester, a backup offensive lineman rated 72nd in the 2019 class.

regarding the lingard-transfer discussion on this blog (go & aero, i think), this SI story speaks directly to it

it's also just a well-written article for those interested in the quick-changing nature of the game of college football:

groovy fact!

i have that anthology on LP and haven't had a working lp-player in almost 9 years, despite keeping a large collection of plastic = haven't heard it for a long time, though i've had it since the late-70's

. . . but the end of that "hey jude" song, with pickett sending it to the heavens, was one of the best musical orgasms of all time

Capacity 2018 = 65326

'Announced' at the home game against #24 Pitt to close the regular season = 59,606

Does this look like a 91% capacity crowd to you?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bxIzfdzzmM

Probably close by late 2nd half.

So around 59,905 announced is the range probably this season. Not difficult to imagine UVA will travel as well or better as they normally would as this is their best road game destination against a team they feel they can play with so maybe more?

Big East charity case series was slanted in UM's favor recently historically, not so much now, and the Hurricanes were on a hot streak in conference home openers, not so much now. How's the short week for UM to prepare contrasting with how the extra week for UVA had for the same task will provide the story of how spicy a blob 86 will provide for a weekend of Fake Lame talking points. UM hasn't had to go overtime in a while and UVA had two games in a row go to shootout OT last year to end the regular season on a losing streak, maybe try and drag them out into the deep water and let speed prevail running on fumes with a rabid home crowd providing the determination to get the first ever top 25 win on the new old Miami coach's record? If the offensive line gels--LOL

Couldn't finish it without being overcome in hilarity, the new old new old Miami . . .

Gotta a soft spot for Jelly, Jelly by the Allman Bros. Band (Eat a Peach). Used to play that cassette almost every night when I went to bed in my dorm room on 7th floor Mahoney. Jelly, Jelly was at the end of one side, and usually the last sounds I heard before fading off... Good days...

Mavis Staple and Bob Dylan were going to get married one time, they are the best of friends to this day.

Alpine,

Thanks for sharing that article about the new redshirt rule. Although we can take Lingard and McCord’s word that they want to return, redshirting certainly keeps their options open so it seems that now all of our redshirted players are at risk of transferring, if that is their true intention.

The Canes and CMD desperately need a win against Virginia on Friday. Winning the Coastal Division is no longer my goal for this poorly coached and poorly prepared team. Bowl eligibility is my goal. If CMD is more involved with the defense and Perry is starting, I still have some hope for a win.

Big Facts!

To me Perry moving around and throwing a pick trumps Williams sacked 5 times an losing 40 yards of offense

I am not feeling an inner peace and tranquillity like after a really good bowel movement, but I do think we have a shot at winning this one.

I think a meth head has a better chance of scoring teenth in front of a police station then the canes have at winning Friday night.
