O line stuff

.

▪ The Hurricanes, with two offensive line commitments in the 2020 class, are scrambling for more help at the position. The Canes have reached out to multiple linemen in recent days, according to several reports.

One of them is Bradenton-based IMG Academy three-star guard Alex Atcavage, who decommitted from FSU and spoke to UM over the weekend. He’s expected to visit in January.

Also, UM recently offered Jonesboro, Georgia-based three-star prospect Phillip Wilder, according to Wilder. Penn State, Georgia Tech and Texas are among others in the mix, and he likely will visit UM in January.

UM also reached out to Parkland Stoneman Douglas three-star guard Gage Gaynor, and he’s also viewed as a backup plan if Miami wants to add another guard in January or February.

UM has held out hopes of luring Jacksonville-based three star guard Kobe Baynes, a Louisville commitment who will announce his intentions at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

But the Canes have lost hope of flipping four-star guard Chris Morris from Texas A Morris canceled his planned UM visit this past weekend.

At least UM has two legitimate tackle prospects committed in Oakland four-star prospect Jalen Rivers and Chris Washington, a three-star prospect based in Nashville

VA Cane

lot of 3 stars......we have had way too many of them....all the good linemen are gone....yea they want to play in the big time....why go to college to play for a team that may not be able to beat your HS team....or out coach your grade school team?
The good ones are gone now. Trying WINNING...it helps!!

This is how far we have fallen

Plantation American Heritage two-star safety Devonte Brown, who will pick between UM and UCF. Brown’s father, Selwyn, played for UM, but UCF is a formidable challenger. Francois is expected to announce at 9 a.m. Wednesday and Brown at 9:30 a.m.

In the old days
Brown would get a chance to walk on because of his Dad, then work out with the the practice team or get cut all together, now we are fighting UCF for a two star safety.
No I don't think he is the next Ed Reed, there is only one Ed Reed and one Sean Taylor

Go Canes hard ball! #4 in the nation! The Canes baseball team is back at the top of the polls where they belong!

We back!

BigWindyCane1

The OL recruiting Strategy still leaves much to be desired. It’s almost too late to recruit anyone good. The Canes could end up with a lot of two-star projects after Rivers and Washington sign.

Had a chance to see Rivers play at Oakleaf this year. Rivers was a dominant high school OL, no doubt. If Rivers isn’t starting soon, something is definitely wrong.

HerbieIbis

Baseball the complete opposite of football,as far as dominance. Aside from Clemson a bunch of alsorans in football and conference powerhouse in baseball.
It's bad when u need Oh Linemen and all u got to show for a year's worth of recruiting are one stud and one project.

VA Cane

Thats what I say BWC....these kids think about where they want to go....summer camps give them a chance to show their stuff....then they get to see who is going to be relevant as the season.....we after the first 2 losses a lot of doubt crept in....any hope of a reversal of fortune...winning...and attracting top recruits...especially OL...died as the season wound down....then you finish 500 and go to a horrible bowl....
so you have no new strong kids to add to an already shaky leaky OL....so you cannot protect the QB...and pass...and you cannot run the ball....so you are dependent on a D that loses some good players...and they are weaker due to loss....so you stop nobody....and god forbid flip the field or turn the tide with ST.....if Manny is retained like I guess he will be....next year is bad and the future is not bright......you aint gotta wear shades friends!!!

I am not real optimistic about the future of the program....

HerbieIbis

It's hard to be optimistic with this program. No real signature wins, struggle to beat nobodies, can't block, can't stay focused, etc, etc!
We start out, it seems every year in the top 3 in recruiting only to get bumrushed and the next thing u know we are in the teens. We couldn't hold onto a magnet if we were made of metal.
There is no way, I would of kept recruiting Francios. The dude dropped us twice. Ain't going to be much left after this week but scrapes. Manny will out their begging some 3 stars who don't sign early who have been committed to Georgia Southern and Marshall to come play. Ripping off the bottom feeders to get players. Apparently we can't even get a tweener legacy kid to come play, Selwyn Brown's kid. Kids this day and time want eye candy and the latest fads. History means nothing. They don't care about playing in the back yard, even if it means mom and pop can't be at every game. They can see virtually every game on TV.
Even if this is a shitty bowl game they better not lose. They blew this year. UNC is going to keep getting better. They are taking North Carolina HS top recruits. Georgia Tech will get better. This should been a cake walk and we stumbled like a bunch of punch drinks on dollar day.

Topic on ESPN NSD: importance of signing lineman!
SEC signs the most....hands down.....CMD now....and UM since 2003.....if you do not have a strong OL/DL you will not win....you will not compete...you will not be relevant.

Thanks AD and staff.....you are so out of touch ...Most OL signed out of top 300 on ESPN....Bama GA LSU OSU from 2016 2019......wonder why these teams do so well.....IJS.....you have to have the big fellas on both sides to win....fact.....wake up UM....

Mia Chi ‘Cane ‘98

Again why do we recruit O-Linemen from Florida? As I said before recruit these guys from the Midwest, northeast, etc. I bet some would love to play in in sunny warm Miami.

This Miami model from the 80’s/90’s is outdated!

HerbieIbis

Linemen are the life blood of the team. Been on here for years, mainly bitching about the DT position, now it's the offensive line. The portal although helpful, has made us lazy. No sweat if we didn't get so and so, we still have the second signing day and then we have the portal.
Said on here yesterday, u know u have a problem with depth of talent at at least 3 positions and after a year or more recruiting for the 2020 class, you got 2 OH Linemen and one CB.
The linemen in Florida can be tough but CB? Give me a frickin g break. That drawing board is looking pretty empty right now. Scrap heap time.

Of course it is
We have a freaking HC that lost to Fiu and duke in back to back weeks
No imagination nor game plan and of course we know he would rather give OPOY to a lineman rather than deejay or Osborne;
He’d rather play patchen over Rousseau;
He’d rather play a walk on lb than a highly recruited lb (I think brooks)
Etc

86Cane

I will admit CMD is doing better than I thought he would. Still got some work to do but felling pretty good about today so far.

BigWindyCane1

Its one thing to miss out on some good OLs. Its another to strike out on nearly all the OLs from Florida, and also strike out on OLs from other places.

Really, I think the Canes got involved with OL recruiting a little late in the cycle. I am not sure what is going on, but you would think every solid OL recruit (whether in Florida or not) would want to come for immediate playing time. But the issue has been that the Canes are not winning and developing players on the OL.

As VA said, developing players and winning solves a lot of problems, but this OL did not develop at all, as a matter of fact, I could make a case that this OL regressed from last season and from the beginning of the year. This was the worst OL I have seen at the U.

BigWindyCane1

OT Jalen Rivers signed with the Canes! A position of need is in. If Rivers isn't starting next season (barring injury or transfers), I will be very upset.

BigWindyCane1

Still waiting to hear from Chantz Williams, Roberts, Moise and Height.

I agree with Soup in that so far, a solid recruiting day for a 6-6 team.

We did at one time have the number one but most jumped ship before we began the season. Same old story start out like gang busters and start back sliding.
Look, class is not that bad but the positions of need were not addressed thoroughly. Rivers. Will probably need to lose a few LB'S to play tackle.
CB, Clarke has mainly played WR. The dude can fly but probably a Red shirt and at this point we still only have 4 corners 5 if Bandy stays.
Guarantee we see packages for Martell running spread in the bowl game. Now I don't know if they will let him throw but knowing us, it will only be him running.

Height flips to Auburn...

HerbieIbis

Well, I guess that does it for today. We only had one flip. I guess that's a win.
Moise won't sign until Feb. And grades could be an issue.
I guess Flowe hasn't announced yet but that miracle would bring g some life back.
So that leaves us with about 6 or7 ships left.
2 offensive linemen and where we get them from who knows.
2 CB's
1 DE
1 LB
1 best available if we have 7.

86Cane

So the issue of paying the players (allowing them to market their images for profit) came up on ESPN coverage of signing day.

They had a conversation about if it will influence recruiting in that some players may choose some higher profile teams over smaller schools or lower ranked schools to make more $$$.

Or will some players choose a smaller school where they can stand out more and not have to compete with other star players for the marketing $$$ of Nike or Addidas, etc.

They also said they had no idea how the "system" might work. Here are some issues they cited:

1. Will getting paid have any ties to minimum academic standards or performance?

2. How will it work in the distribution of money?

orange 'n green in the vein

Just wait until they find out that the 18-22 year old women's golf/tennis/swimming/gymnastics/football-to-the-rest-of-the-world-instead-of-handegg/whatever athlete is more of a 'marketable face' to most consumers for any company with money to spend on this kind of marketing effort in the first place Tom, that'll be a fantastic coffee whiff to wake up to in the morning for the shitty football program members who think because they can bruise their brains they should get paid to play a kids game.

86Cane

After listening to all of the discussion I had a couple of thoughts.

1. What happens when a 5 star player fresh outta high school, you know a "can't miss" prospect never cracks the starting line, never plays a down up but shows up in a Porsche at practice while his teammates show up on bikes?

2. What happens if a player is making BIG $$$ and a coach suspends or benches a player who winds up losing money because of it? Will the player sue the coach?

3. What happens the first time a player makes more money than the head coach? How does that impact the relationship and dynamic between the coach and the player?

HerbieIbis

Did I see where Baynes committed to us?

Reminds me of a conversation I had with a coworker who is an FSU alumni. When colleges are paying players...some unanswered questions:

1) Are all payments a base salary, regardless of sport? Does Tua makes as much as Augustus, who is on the crew team?

2) Is there a salary cap for Div 1 football?

3) Is there a salary floor?

4) How much does a Tua get in a signing bonus to come to Alabama? Is it $20M over four years. Is it $50M?

5) How does this mesh with non-athlete college students who are taking on crippling debt, while a prized 5 star player theoretically receives millions of dollars to attend the same university? Is it sustainable?

I know theres $ in the game now, but this pay for play in college will ruin the game. I am just not for paying guys. I could see giving players so much per month to a degree, but not the big $ people are talking about. It will be just like watching NFL. At that point do you need 2 leagues to watch? Probably not.

While its nice to see a decent class, I do not see where they come in make a huge difference and all of a sudden we beat clemson and play for it all. Not going to happen around here until the AD HC and other coaches are fired and a real AD and staff come here. We have apathy from top to bottom...Pres BOT AD Coaches players. We are at the bottom now got to go up. Fire them all I say....no faith in any of them....not even the players. Its time to burn it down!!

VA Cane

Spot on CGNC!!!! We do not have coaching, and no really strong players to develop.

VA Cane

I think at this point it is going to take a whole lot more than a 11 or 14 rank class to get the program started upward...you lose to Duke FIU GT....you got problems. Its coaching and culture...fire the coaches fire the AD and start from scratch. You will probably lose some kids but go if you need to....got to really break it down to the studs and foundation rebuild the house...

BigWindyCane1

LSU has more South Florida OL commits than the Canes?

BigWindyCane1

The Canes have the #2 ranked recruiting class in the ACC. The Canes play against ACC teams, and do not play the team with the #1 recruiting class, Clemson.

If the Canes continue to lose to teams with inferior recruiting classes, then it is further evidence that we have a coaching issue.

BigWindyCane1

Flowe to Oregon is yet another top-ranked recruit from California who is headed out of state. The top 13 recruits from California who have announced their commitments have chosen out-of-state schools.

Wow! USC, Stanford and Cal will have a hard time getting back to the top if they cannot recruit their own backyard.

The Canes have done a little better than that.

VA Cane

I would agree BWC.....I think we have seen that we have major issues....FIU, GT, Duke, UNC losses are unacceptable. We know how bad the coaching is.....and I do not see a bunch of young guys coming in playing and saving CMD. We have not had a good coach since BD left, and we do not have the right guy now. I like MD....but he is not a head coach at any level. He is a DC just like Shannon nothing more. Remember, you can have all the skill and speed guys you want....if you cannot block and tackle you cannot win....and we cannot!

solarcane

LOL. Who signs, who doesn't. Out coaching staff is poor so does it really matter?

Posted by: CGNC | December 18, 2019 at 03:17 PM

You are right CGNC,
We have done this every year.
Every year we rave about where the recruiting class ends up. Every year with the exception of maybe Duke J the players under achieve, the coaches don't coach and everybody acts like they are surprised that "anything less than 10 wins with this roster is unacceptable," when it's all over.

You VA and a few others realize an 8-4
season at Miami is actually very optimistic.

HerbieIbis

I can see paying players based on merit. Production on the field in the class room and at practice, then maybe u won't have no slouches and taking plays off. If it's done right practices should be fierce.
Pretty much the same schools all piled near the top of the recruiting ranking. Rich keep getting richer and rest get the scraps. Truth be know, those players are already getting lost at those schools.
Unlike basketball where Duke and Kentucky take in all these top players, it don't matter those dudes gone in a year and all Duke and Kentucky have to show for all them 5 stars is one ship each.

86Cane

If the Canes continue to lose to teams with inferior recruiting classes, then it is further evidence that we have a coaching issue.

Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | December 18, 2019 at 04:16 PM

I am going to reinforce your comment by telling you something that you prolly already know:

1. FIU's recruting ranking was #83 in 2017, #69 in 2018, #88 in 2019 and #88 in 2020.

2. Duke's recruiting ranking was #47 in 2017, #63 in 2018, #49 in 2019 and #56 in 2020.

3. Miami's recruiting ranking was #12 in 2017, #8 in 2018, #27 in 2019 and #15 in 2020.

So that means that:

1. FIU barely made it into the top 70 (69).

2. Duke made it into the top 50 (47 and 49).

3. Miami had three top 15 classes (8,12,15) and none lower than #27 during the same four year period.

I think somebody has some explaining to do?

86Cane

You VA and a few others realize an 8-4

Great post big facts

SOUP

Valhalla is a place from Norse mythology equivalent to Christian Heaven. In Valhalla the souls are said to dine with the Gods in the great hall of Odin(King of the Gods). It is said to be in Asgard. According to Christian belief Angels reside in the heavens and after death people are either sent to heaven or hell depending on their deeds in life.

In Norse mythology, the souls of warriors who died nobly in battle were brought to a magnificent palace, where they spent their days fighting for diversion, immune from lasting injury, and their evenings lustily feasting on freshly killed boar and quaffing the free-flowing mead. In Old Norse, the word for this warrior heaven is Valhǫll (literally, "hall of the slain"); in German, it is Walhalla. English speakers picked up the name as Valhalla in the 18th century. Nowadays, we can use the word figuratively, and induction or admission into a modern-day Valhalla doesn't require passing from this life. It can be a place of honor (a hall of fame, for example) or a place of bliss (as in "an ice cream lover's Valhalla").
