The Miami Hurricanes caught some teams by surprise in 2019, but there will be a target on their back when they take the field in 2020.
The Canes were ranked No. 4 in in Collegiate Baseball's Fabulous 40 NCAA Division I Pre-Season Poll, released Monday. The top 5 preseason ranking was Miami's first since 2015, when the Hurricanes opened the season at No. 4 in the Collegiate Baseball preseason poll. The complete Collegiate Baseball Fabulous 40 NCAA Division I Pre-Season Poll can be viewed HERE.
A year ago under the direction of head coach Gino DiMare, the Hurricanes won 41 games and returned to the NCAA postseason for the first time since 2016. The Canes earned the 46th postseason berth in program history and reached the Starkville Regional final before falling to No. 6 Mississippi State.
The Hurricanes went 18-12 in ACC play, winning seven conference series and turning in their best conference record since 2016.
Miami closed out the 2019 season ranked in the top 25 of every major poll, finishing as high as No. 19 in the final edition of the D1Baseball Top 25. Miami came in at No. 22 in the Baseball America Top 25 and No. 24 in Collegiate Baseball's NCAA Div. I Baseball Poll. The Canes were also ranked No. 24 in the final NCBWA Division I Poll.
Four Canes were named All-ACC, including returners Adrian Del Castillo, Brian Van Belle and Raymond Gil. Del Castillo was also one of 12 players picked for the 2019 ACC All-Freshman Team.
Twelve different Hurricanes hit at least one home run in 2019, sparking an explosion of power from the Miami bats that matched the 2018 season home run total of 23 after just 15 games in 2019. The Canes' 85 homers were more than the combined team home run total of 58 from the previous two seasons (35 in 2017 and 23 in 2018).
The Canes brought in a talented recruiting class that ranked as high as No. 6 nationally and is considered among the best incoming classes in the country.
Miami opens its second season under the direction of DiMare on Feb. 14 with the opener of a three-game series against Rutgers (Feb. 14-16). For information on season tickets, click HERE or call 305-284-2263.

I got you solar....had a UVA guy give me some friendly grief about us....asked him....what happened to you vs us this year.....how many NC titles have you won or even played for....he said we won NCAA hoops....I said big deal......anybody can get lucky and win at a non contact sissy girls game.....we are friends and grief each other a lot....but he said that hurt....I said if i had to brag about winning a sissy title it would hurt too....I wear my shirts and all.....honestly....not many people even know what it is now....we are that irrelevant.....my kids ask me was UM good at one time? We never hear about them....they are Bama clemson OSU OK.....they do not know of our .....dusty dreamy past.......Hmmmm....and this program leaders are doing nothing to revive it!!!

Georgia Dekalb Jaguars win 7u National Championship in Miami.
The Jaguars defeated teams from North Carolina, Alabama and Texas in the tournament to win the championship.
Badass kids playing that far from home and beating everybody they played.

O line stuff
.
▪ The Hurricanes, with two offensive line commitments in the 2020 class, are scrambling for more help at the position. The Canes have reached out to multiple linemen in recent days, according to several reports.
One of them is Bradenton-based IMG Academy three-star guard Alex Atcavage, who decommitted from FSU and spoke to UM over the weekend. He’s expected to visit in January.
Also, UM recently offered Jonesboro, Georgia-based three-star prospect Phillip Wilder, according to Wilder. Penn State, Georgia Tech and Texas are among others in the mix, and he likely will visit UM in January.
UM also reached out to Parkland Stoneman Douglas three-star guard Gage Gaynor, and he’s also viewed as a backup plan if Miami wants to add another guard in January or February.
UM has held out hopes of luring Jacksonville-based three star guard Kobe Baynes, a Louisville commitment who will announce his intentions at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
But the Canes have lost hope of flipping four-star guard Chris Morris from Texas A Morris canceled his planned UM visit this past weekend.
At least UM has two legitimate tackle prospects committed in Oakland four-star prospect Jalen Rivers and Chris Washington, a three-star prospect based in Nashville
Posted by: solarcane | December 17, 2019 at 07:10 PM
lot of 3 stars......we have had way too many of them....all the good linemen are gone....yea they want to play in the big time....why go to college to play for a team that may not be able to beat your HS team....or out coach your grade school team?
The good ones are gone now. Trying WINNING...it helps!!

This is how far we have fallen
Plantation American Heritage two-star safety Devonte Brown, who will pick between UM and UCF. Brown’s father, Selwyn, played for UM, but UCF is a formidable challenger. Francois is expected to announce at 9 a.m. Wednesday and Brown at 9:30 a.m.
In the old days
Brown would get a chance to walk on because of his Dad, then work out with the the practice team or get cut all together, now we are fighting UCF for a two star safety.
No I don't think he is the next Ed Reed, there is only one Ed Reed and one Sean Taylor

The OL recruiting Strategy still leaves much to be desired. It’s almost too late to recruit anyone good. The Canes could end up with a lot of two-star projects after Rivers and Washington sign.
Had a chance to see Rivers play at Oakleaf this year. Rivers was a dominant high school OL, no doubt. If Rivers isn’t starting soon, something is definitely wrong.
Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | December 17, 2019 at 08:11 PM
Baseball the complete opposite of football,as far as dominance. Aside from Clemson a bunch of alsorans in football and conference powerhouse in baseball.
It's bad when u need Oh Linemen and all u got to show for a year's worth of recruiting are one stud and one project.
Posted by: HerbieIbis | December 17, 2019 at 08:21 PM
Thats what I say BWC....these kids think about where they want to go....summer camps give them a chance to show their stuff....then they get to see who is going to be relevant as the season.....we after the first 2 losses a lot of doubt crept in....any hope of a reversal of fortune...winning...and attracting top recruits...especially OL...died as the season wound down....then you finish 500 and go to a horrible bowl....
so you have no new strong kids to add to an already shaky leaky OL....so you cannot protect the QB...and pass...and you cannot run the ball....so you are dependent on a D that loses some good players...and they are weaker due to loss....so you stop nobody....and god forbid flip the field or turn the tide with ST.....if Manny is retained like I guess he will be....next year is bad and the future is not bright......you aint gotta wear shades friends!!!
I am not real optimistic about the future of the program....
Posted by: VA Cane | December 17, 2019 at 08:30 PM
It's hard to be optimistic with this program. No real signature wins, struggle to beat nobodies, can't block, can't stay focused, etc, etc!
We start out, it seems every year in the top 3 in recruiting only to get bumrushed and the next thing u know we are in the teens. We couldn't hold onto a magnet if we were made of metal.
There is no way, I would of kept recruiting Francios. The dude dropped us twice. Ain't going to be much left after this week but scrapes. Manny will out their begging some 3 stars who don't sign early who have been committed to Georgia Southern and Marshall to come play. Ripping off the bottom feeders to get players. Apparently we can't even get a tweener legacy kid to come play, Selwyn Brown's kid. Kids this day and time want eye candy and the latest fads. History means nothing. They don't care about playing in the back yard, even if it means mom and pop can't be at every game. They can see virtually every game on TV.
Even if this is a shitty bowl game they better not lose. They blew this year. UNC is going to keep getting better. They are taking North Carolina HS top recruits. Georgia Tech will get better. This should been a cake walk and we stumbled like a bunch of punch drinks on dollar day.

The U beats Temple in hoops tonight by 1 after a pair of FTs by Chris Lykes with 4 seconds left. I think this was the trade for 4 million and the U getting MD. Nice win for Coach L on a team that will likely have challenges in a tough ACC, a phrase I'm not used to saying on the heels of football season.

Question is, how long will Nebraska continue to be patient with Frost. They won 4 games in his first year, 5 games this year. If they're 6-6 in Year 3 and 7-5 in Year 4, is that enough?

it should NOT be. Bo Pelini won at least 9 games in each of his 7 years and was let go. Frost should not keep his job if he only wins 6 or 7 games in the next 1-3 years

Topic on ESPN NSD: importance of signing lineman!
SEC signs the most....hands down.....CMD now....and UM since 2003.....if you do not have a strong OL/DL you will not win....you will not compete...you will not be relevant.
Thanks AD and staff.....you are so out of touch ...Most OL signed out of top 300 on ESPN....Bama GA LSU OSU from 2016 2019......wonder why these teams do so well.....IJS.....you have to have the big fellas on both sides to win....fact.....wake up UM....
Posted by: VA Cane | December 18, 2019 at 11:08 AM
Saint Thomas Aquinas had a lot of big picks .....every one of them went to a big program...one went to MD...MD sucks....2 OTs to LSU......not a chance we got any of those kids.....its hard to fathom we cannot recruit the damn state....someone told me once....winning matters....about 53 years ago when I started playing at 7......my Dad....yea...winning matters.....who wants to lose....I guess we have settled on being happy with 6 or 7 wins a year....sad...
Posted by: VA Cane | December 18, 2019 at 11:13 AM
Again why do we recruit O-Linemen from Florida? As I said before recruit these guys from the Midwest, northeast, etc. I bet some would love to play in in sunny warm Miami.
This Miami model from the 80’s/90’s is outdated!
Posted by: Mia Chi ‘Cane ‘98 | December 18, 2019 at 11:25 AM
Linemen are the life blood of the team. Been on here for years, mainly bitching about the DT position, now it's the offensive line. The portal although helpful, has made us lazy. No sweat if we didn't get so and so, we still have the second signing day and then we have the portal.
Said on here yesterday, u know u have a problem with depth of talent at at least 3 positions and after a year or more recruiting for the 2020 class, you got 2 OH Linemen and one CB.
The linemen in Florida can be tough but CB? Give me a frickin g break. That drawing board is looking pretty empty right now. Scrap heap time.

Solar
Of course it is
We have a freaking HC that lost to Fiu and duke in back to back weeks
No imagination nor game plan and of course we know he would rather give OPOY to a lineman rather than deejay or Osborne;
He’d rather play patchen over Rousseau;
He’d rather play a walk on lb than a highly recruited lb (I think brooks)
Etc

I will admit CMD is doing better than I thought he would. Still got some work to do but felling pretty good about today so far.

Its one thing to miss out on some good OLs. Its another to strike out on nearly all the OLs from Florida, and also strike out on OLs from other places.
Really, I think the Canes got involved with OL recruiting a little late in the cycle. I am not sure what is going on, but you would think every solid OL recruit (whether in Florida or not) would want to come for immediate playing time. But the issue has been that the Canes are not winning and developing players on the OL.
As VA said, developing players and winning solves a lot of problems, but this OL did not develop at all, as a matter of fact, I could make a case that this OL regressed from last season and from the beginning of the year. This was the worst OL I have seen at the U.
