alpine

weren't we talking about bussing away all the 2019 mess?

isn't the whole canespace on that bus?

cleaning up/out the old as important as ordering in the shiny new, which manny is mostly very good at

Big Marsh
@hurricanesmarsh
If you combine Greg Rousseau and Quincy Roche’s stats from 2019, you’d have:
-28.5 sacks
-38.5 TFLs
Bring Roche to Miami, and you have the most deadly DE duo in college football
Jan 3, 2020

alpine

all this talk of a roche on the d-line brings back roach battles growing up in the gables

. . . lived in the wonderful, beautiful chinese village, but it was old (no AC or heat) and, together with all the banana trees in our backyard, we were a center for the spine-tingling palmetto bug, with it's creepy, ugly markings and it's ability to prove, thru chemical-tentings and bi-monthly terminators, that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger

- had my first levitational experience after turning out the light and walking barefoot to my bed, when one foot came partway down on one
. . . my body did an 8" vertical without even using a foot-plant into the floor;
roach didn't even get smushed

- night snacks meant reaching my arm around to turn on the kitchen light at night; then waiting for all the scurrying sounds to stop, before entering

etc . . .

didn't mind leaving that part of south florida behind!!

- hoping the roche-rousseau duo has the same nightmare effect on opposing offenses

alpine

one last thing:

i think go canes' somewhat over-the-top positive response is the better way to handle the off-season, than "i'll wait 'til thanksgiving before giving thanks"

. . . too often, we have both bigger wins and more consistent winning during the off-season than, at the least, anyone else in the ACC

(. . . except, of course, for clemson, which again unloaded a cattle-car full of 5-star, can't-miss, stud bulls)

shouldn't we be having 2 seasons? so that we can collect our off-season coastal championship each year?!
. . . the canes way to "fight for the right to paaaaaarty"

Go Canes!!

Got some comments on my post complimenting Manny before the new blog came out.

Don't understand how anyone doesn't think what Manny has done since the end of the season deserves the superlatives.

If we put together a checklist of what MUST be fixed on this team for us to have any hope for 2020 what would it look like. Think it would look something like this:

1) Fire OC and find a proven young coach who runs a spread offense
2) Fire OL coach and find someone with experience who's had success recruiting
3) Fix the completely dysfunctional QB room with a great Grad Transfer
4) FIND A FREAKING KICKER!!
5) Bring in more DBs, we are paper thin there
6) Find a way to replace the pass rush lost with the Garvin and Hill departures

Would anyone disagree with that list?

Well all have been addressed, some beyond our wildest expectations. So just as I called Manny's first season an unmitigated disaster and a complete failure, I'll give him an irrefutable A+ for what he's done since.

W ECU 52-27 (3-9)
L @Tulane 17-20 (5-7 highest level QB play says the slurpers in the sid-tard squad!)
W Navy 24-14 (7-6)

2018 (coach was fired despite all that 'top level QB play', sid tards blame D'No after frothing his nuts along with fatso for five seasons in Miami because that's what Fake Lames made them do with his hand up their ass)
W @Rice 45-27 (2-11)

L @Texas Tech 49-63 (5-7, coach was fired)
W Texas Southern (2-9 cupcake game)
W Tulsa 41-26 (3-9)
W @East Carolina 42-20 (3-9)
W @Navy 49-36 (3-10)
W #21 USF 57-36 (7-6)

Big Al,
I really enjoyed your recent posts, plenty of humor with some good thoughts sprinkled in.

The reason I said I would consider how this off season improvements went by Thanksgiving was because as it's been well documented I have believed for years we are an 8-4 team.

If by Thanksgiving we have won 8 games and have a chance to improve on that, I will think Manny has done an outstanding job.

I DO believe he has made some good improvements.
If Lashlee can groom Van Dyke to step in after King leaves I will be content Manny has it together.

old news, but now that the big king signing is slowly being digested, time to go back to this one and savor it:

The Miami football program flipped their third former Florida State commit on Sunday. Four-star cornerback Isaiah Dunson announced via Twitter that he intends to sign with the Hurricanes on National Signing Day in February. Dunson will join running back Jaylen Knighton and safety Jalen Harrell as former FSU commits in Miami.

Dunson fits the profile for what Manny Diaz is looking for in a cornerback. At 6’2, 180 pounds, the length Dunson has is what Diaz and defensive coordinator Blake Baker like on the outside. Dunson will be the second-highest ranked defensive player and highest-ranked defensive back in the Category 20 class for Miami.

If we start showing a resemblance of the offense
that I see watching Huston and d'Eriq King with a steady improvement through the year, we will be off and running with 4* and more 5* recruits not leaving. They will want to stay and be part of the
march to the play off's and a Championship.

I think they will love the U and this new offense.
Build the Spread and they will come.

The Herb

Fellows, got to look at the bright side, we got no where to go but up. We still have more talent than everyone in ACC except Clemson and maybe FSU and now maybe we have somebody in Lashlee that knows what to do with it.
Going be up to the players to get in the playbook, get their Tudes right and play for each other, then we will start to see the results. Going to be a few growing pains. Still got to learn how to be consistent. Still got to learn how to consistently win on the road and learn how to not lose to teams that have no busy being on the field with us.
Whatever The King brings us, it has to be better than watching those 2 stumble bumpkins (William's & Perry) try to run an offense. Granted William's was a RS a would have a bad game here and there but this dude has a major tude problem and it has been on going. Best thing for him to do is hit the portal.
Perry don't care one way or the other.
As far as predictions, if can resolve our issues quick we could be anywhere from 7-5 to 12-0. There will be a couple games where will struggle, every team has them but the good teams find a way too win those and we have found different ways to lose them.
Will be alright.

TheHerb

Or Damon Hazelton?

RCCF

Someone Say 12%????

Joe

The Houston Defense was garbage, so you can't hit him on that. He scored the points needed to win, but his defense isn't anywhere near Miami's to pull their weight. I don't care what King's record was at Houston, he scored points and ran the spread flawlessly. Our Defense will be on the field the same amount as last season, because Uptempo scoring offense will allow us to score fast and wear down the opposing teams offense for a change. Also, the another difference is the high scoring will offset some of the defensive mistakes and our defense should feed off the the offense. That's how good teams play they feed off each other and that was definitely lacking as we relied completely on the defense all game. I'm optimistic we get atleast 9 wins and hope for more.

nemo2020

Any confirmation yet on new transfers, etc.
Today is the deadline for Spring Semester registration.

Joe

I'm guessing we wont be getting any of the OL transfers that were mentioned a few weeks ago since the deadline is today. I guess we can get some transfers in the summer, just better if they were able to practice and get in the weight room with the team in the Spring.

TheHerb

Unless, something strange happens, will have to wait until after Spring practice to check out the fruits from the portal. Don't look for much going on Feb 6th either, maybe one to two additions.
Will definitely get someone in the spring for Oh line help and either another Cb and Wr, that's if we don't snatch one of those up Feb.6th.

I think we a ll know about the 12% bus....its always been funny to laugh at....peoples jobs on the bus...the mechanics the sayings....Do not think anybody took it seriously.

I have never thought 12-0 since i blogged here. Last time was 2000-01, 2001-02 and 2002-03...when we were the best ever.

Honest I do not make predictions...would say next year better brand of football....a little progress....possibly make a bowl...possibly....this dumpster fire is not going 12-0.....it may never ever again....we do not get the talent, we do not coach our players, they are never held accountable player or coach, we are outdated in all 3 phases of attack,....and we have been so bad for so long that kids think we have been bad forever.....they have no clue as to whaqt we HAVE done well....

Go Canes!!

Posted by: 86Cane | January 21, 2020 at 05:57 PM

I gave him a resounding F for last season.

BigWindyCane1

Keshawn Smith from San Diego. If I recall correctly, Lincoln High School is in Southeast San Diego, which is an urban, working-class neighborhood, with similar demographics as Miami.

They have good football over there, and it appears Smith has played multiple positions on offense receiving and rushing the football, which should fit well in the spread offense.

If he brings a positive attitude and work ethic, he can eventually contribute at some point down the line. Not sure if he is ready to contribute next season, but the spread needs more shifty WRs and he fits the bill

VA Cane

I agree with a solid F.....he failed and failed badly....but not alone!

The BOT and BJ put the program in this position by putting a Good DC in a position he had no business in....he had no HC experience. He should have gone to Temple...a good place to try being a HC...not here especially with the miserable failures since 2003. A full scale nationwide search should have been done....as should have for Butchs' replacement, Cokers, Onions, and AlPas CMRs...full real searchs for real coaches...

The coaching staff failed....OL, OC, QB, STs worst in the nation...they did not coach....they collected a salary and losing was opportunity to make lousy excuses.

The players failed.. did not care....they are entitled brats....crybabies....dont care about winning...just be with teammates...cry Shaq...dont mind losing...dont care....except to say I plqay for the U..so what? you had a lousy losing season..

and all of them above should have declined a bowl....f##k a bowl and the $.....you got shut out and embarrassed made a fool...after a terrible season...

So yes they all Failed..now credit to Manhole for making some moves LOOK good on paper, getting rid of some coaches who were bad and getting guys who HAVE had some success... and getting guys who LOOK like they can play...I like the moves...BUT they do not mean a thing on how the look via #'s or on paper....what matters is how they ARE on the field and in practice....thats when one can look at them and see real results...that means improvement effort commitment attitude humility....WINNING...thats what I will look for!

nemo2020

I'm watching the basketball game (UM v. Duke).

Miami may lose this game by 40 points (or more), unless Coach K takes pity on Coach L by mainly playing third stringers (and maybe ball boys) in the second half.

P.S. Somebody please tell Dick Vitale that no one cares any more about Laranaga's playing days at Providence or his Cinderella 2006 team at George Mason. During his nine years at UM, his winning percentage against ACC teams is only about 55 percent. Not good!

TonyCane

I would counter with this...if you were Manny and saw how horribly your first season went - outside of resigning would these not be the moves you (or any other coach) might do?

It seems to me that less than 4 weeks after a nadir, the program has the most valuable commodity you can have. Something that was lost at various points in the last 15 years.

Hope.

TonyCane

Miami now has two remaining scholarships that it can offer in this period.

Would love to see one go to Avantae Williams and another to a transfer offensive lineman.

orange 'n green in the vein

nemo, you complain about The Pimp every season the team isn't contending for a top four seed in the tournament but the halfway point is near so I'll just ask yet again: who are you proposing to replace the coach with?

The Word From Da Herb

Va, Va it will be alright.
Yes Manny coached like his Qb's played, pretty bad.
Manny didn't create this offensive mess. Took a gamble on Enos who most of us thought was a good hire and it blew the bananas out of the tail pipe.
Barry, hey here's an NFL guy, should be great for the OH line, it crumbled like Adobe bricks. He inherited most of those goofs, the problem u can't make home made biscuits without dough!
Stumblefield, might as been hobo, from all his coaching stops. He taught the art of not getting open.
Patke, who to The Herb is a waste of a position coach, got SPT'S dumped in his lap and wouldn't u know it Bubby Yips Baxa, couldn't kick a chip shot FG.
I could go on but no use in rehashing that nightmare until the next time our qb goes color blind 3 possessions in a row or we miss a 25yd FG.
Flashbacks start to creep in.
The question do we have enough time to get these players to gel together?
Manny made several changes and even went all the way to Cali to get a 3 star Wr. Don't know how many states are between us and Cali but dam if I went that far I believe this dude should ready to play now and be a stud. We did need another WR.
Now let's get a recruiting machine top shelf WR coach.

HerbieIbis

VA Cane

I would counter with this...if you were Manny and saw how horribly your first season went - outside of resigning would these not be the moves you (or any other coach) might do?

Yes I do agree with the moves...but I would counter with this...are these moves, (from a coach who was not close to being qualified to be the HC, and wanting to keep his job) going to immediately change the lamest O, OL, and QBs in the country, and propel you into the elite of college football...say Top 10?...

I would say no....therefore moves that LOOK good SOUND good, while showing a willingness to change (where prior HCs would not) do not translate into the most important aspect of Sports...WINNING....therefore, I will wait and see, then assess how effective these moves are...paper aint nothing but something to start a fire with...and we got a dumpster fire of tires, paper, cardboard...and gasoline...so paper does nothing for me....what happens on the field....thats the deal...anybody can lose...but you got to step up and be counted to win...its all that matters on the field...paper is for writers....the field is a lonely club...For Winners Only!!!

Perhaps, you could first answer one simple question for me?
Name any ACC caliber team that would be eagar to hire Laranaga (away from Miami) at this late stage of his career?

58 Straight

Miami picked up a commitment San Diego Lincoln three-star wide receiver Keyshawn Smith on Tuesday.

Smith, who is ranked by 247Sports as the nation's No. 127 wide receiver prospect in the Class of 2020, signed with Washington State last month during the Early Signing Period, but was released from his NLI after Mike Leach left Pullman to be the head coach at Mississippi State.

The Hurricanes made contact with Smith just a few days ago. He's the type of wide receiver that can excel in Rhett Lashlee's new offense given his ball skills and ability to get open. UM tight ends coach Stephen Field is the one that gets credit for the commitment.

Smith caught 46 passes for 808 yards and eight touchdowns as a senior. He also returned a punt and kickoff for touchdowns while adding three more scores on the ground. One of Smith's best plays at the prep level landed him on ESPN's "You Got Mossed!" as he went up-and-over a defender in the state playoffs for a touchdown.

Realistically I see Miami as a 9-3 team in 2020.

But I have to call it 12-0 until we lose or else Capt. 12% RCCF will put me on blast because The U fans are NEVER supposed to pick a loss before it happens. IF it happens of course we have to accept it but to PREDICT IT is a cardinal sin!

. . . but i'm really looking forward to seeing what coach puts out there in 2 years, when he gets more bodies, so they can actually practice during the season

The Canes had 6 assists and 13 turnovers last night against Duke. That low assist-to-turnover ratio has been a major problem all season.

The Canes have to work too hard to score. Too often, the Canes score from individual isolation, rather than cuts, spacing, crisp passing. The Canes really don't have a true point guard. Lykes is a good player, but he is more of a scorer, not a passer or ball-handler. Good teams have 15 or more assists and fewer turnovers-- the Canes are not a good team. The Canes cannot expect to go far this season because they cannot pass the ball. The Canes need to recruit and develop better passers.

That's one more win right there!

Well all have been addressed, some beyond our wildest expectations. So just as I called Manny's first season an unmitigated disaster and a complete failure, I'll give him an irrefutable A+ for what he's done since.

Fire Manny and Blake James is also on the check list and that didn’t happen so it’s still a big fat F for me.

A month ago I analyzed Miami’s schedule and predicted a 4-8 record. This presumed no changes to the team. I had our PPG declining to a measly 15 pt avg.

Needless to say that prediction goes into the ashbin of history. Haven’t done the new set yet, but at minimum we should see a 4 game improvement.

I was relatively accurate back in August 2019, where I picked Miami to go 6-6 in a worst case scenario (presuming the offense was as bad in games as it was in that scrimmage) and had us losing to FIU.

I love the changes
Hate that Patke I was not canned
Unhappy rumph wasn’t canned
I will wait and see - I’m not convinced that we will even beat temple with manny as our politician

yes, windy ... your analysis is right on
. . . but i'll repeat:

1-we lost 2 entire years of recruiting = there has not been enough continuity playing with each other

. . . i like wong, beverly and walker, but they are not 5*, one-and-done guys, so they need to slowly grow up

2- injuries are killing us; gak gone; stone has played in it about 5 games and was just getting back to being able to play meaningful minutes; then "bam";
mcgusty, lykes, waardenburg all playing with injuries

3- which means they don't have enough guys for good practices
. . . hard to develop that assist-type feel without more practice with one another

so i'll say it again: COACH L IS DOING AS GOOD AS POSSIBLE AFTER HAVING BOTH THE FBI AND THE NCAA HANG ON TO HIS BALLS
. . . and he's not a complainer either; he's a teacher and a roll-up-your-sleeves guy

I never thought the day would come where I would have to spend time on this blog trying to convince UM fans that Miami would beat Temple.

Yet, here we are.

OK, take a deep breath and repeat after me:

Miami will beat Temple.
Miami will beat Temple.
Miami will beat Temple.

No, I asked you first and, as I suspected, you don't have an answer. So I'm going to ignore you on the topic for the rest of the season now until you offer up a plan to improve the situation instead of rhetorical dead end on a joke of a non-solution complaint.

Nice job Rod Miller, outplayed Vernon Jr., just barely, but that's the step in the direction he's got to go to get his team out of the place it's in with the defensive liability midget guards in the starting lineup sinking their chances as a program.

My 7-5(4-4 ACC Play) Prediction Hope I am wrong and we go 12-0

HerbieIbis

Oh no Tee, say that prediction ain't so! A loss to U-ABS, nah!
A loss to the QB less Cavs, Nah!
A loss Wake Florist, which by the way is the only ACC school that has not beat us, Nah!
A loss to QB less, pro style MSU, which is where my Fiance' graduated from, well they ain't whiskey. NAH!
NOW THE 3 PROBLEM games we will have is:
A much improving UNC.
FSU, which still has a lot of talent.
Va. TECH, where 4 out 5 times we look like we have never played a football game.
Then u got to throw in one game where everything that can go wrong, will go wrong and that's usually to a team that has no business being on the field with us or our annual head scratching say what game.
Now maybe, just maybe, we got all those dud games out of our system. We will ride the King as long as that stag stays underneath him.

Tony,
We shutting out Va. Tech and Puke but Porter Wagner is going to torch us for a 10 spot? Bold prediction. I hear ya dog!
