NEW BLOG IS UP!

Go Canes!!

If this OC is a young Lincoln Riley we are going to win a ton of games this season.

BigWindyCane1

I see former Canes OC James Coley headed to TAMU, to join Jimbo. Coley was being forced out at UGA by Kirby. No surprise after his underperforming with all that NFL talent on UGA’s roster

Happy to see someone who recruited South Florida leaving UGA. I don’t think TAMU is the same threat on the recruiting trail.

AeroCane

Sorry to burst most of your bubbles:
I don’t think any of these changes change who manny is- a decent DC but not HC material -
I remember when he was DC and Willis made a nice play and then had a bone headed personal foul - instead of pulling his ass and chewing him out, nothing was said and he kept playing. That’s all I need to know about him as a leader!

With that said - my prediction: we lose to Temple; manny gets fired; lashee becomes our interim guy; he either becomes our version of Lincoln Riley, or we hire cristobol (if he’ll come). Either way we win! That’s my best case and my opinion.

. . . would be very cool if it goes down that way; and i think you just might be right

- if they have rugby scholarships somewhere, i would suggest martell enter the rugby portal . . . i think that might be where he can get the most out of his half-QB athleticism
- but if he stays, it really is hard to see him starting . . . i could sort of imagine him quitting football entirely by mid-year

Tell him Herb I love it. Back in the old days you did't see JJ put up with sh**, The players would have run his ass off.He wouldn't have made it through practice. JJ would have looked the other way. For manny you are right he's a puss too.

Bevin Jordan's comments about Jarren leaving tells u the mind set of some of these players.
William's missed curfew before the FIU game and lays a dud.
The bad thing is he still started.
He walked out of practice early in the season.
Wanted to quit twice last year and the coaches begged him. To stay.
Jordan siding with this clown, stating fans and media be loving u one minute and hating on u the next. Effing right we be haten on your azz getting punked by the likes of Ga. TECH, FIU, Duke and La La Tech. I want us to not be haten, do your jobs on the field, practice, weight room and film study. It's called preparation. Can't be prepping if u out partying the night before a game.
It seems The bigger issue is Manny's handling of these problems or lack there of. If u are not going to punish the transgressors, what message are sending your team, moron!
No wonder your team look like crap against the dregs of the world. U did nothing! U got put heads as well.
In parting, I like the moves he has made and getting King may save your job, that's if u quit being a dam Koala Bear and start being a Grizzle or else your team will quit and just go through the motions, as they did the last 4 games to end this past pathetic season, u little puss!

At any rate Hit The Road Jack is playing in the back ground and the Arm Çhair Boyz are singing the chorus of Don't U Come Back No more, No more. Don't go away mad or sad, just go away!

THIS IS WHY THE HERB IS MY FAVORITE BLOGGER OF RECENT TIMES!

TheHerb

I wouldn't say William's wasn't tough, the dude got pounded all year but he is as mentally soft as Charmin toilet paper.
Does have a tude. Doesn't get his way, he puts and goes into a funk. I think the word is entitled because the previous staff beg him to stay, so I believed the dude thought he could get away with anything and he would still play.
Now there standing there holding the door open for him with a box of Kleenex as he walks out. That's The Herb's take.
At any rate Hit The Road Jack is playing in the back ground and the Arm Çhair Boyz are singing the chorus of Don't U Come Back No more, No more
Don't go away mad or sad, just go away!

BigWindyCane1

Frankly, I was never a big fan of JW and his dad. Glad I don’t have to look at him on the Canes sidelines pouting anymore

BigWindyCane1

Williams isn’t a fit in Lashlee’s offense, and he would also be a distraction. I am sure Lashlee let him know, and JW made a wise decision

BigWindyCane1

Greg Rousseau made ESPN’s First Team “Way Too Early” All-American team!

solarcane

I dont think Williams would ever be able to get the ball out quick enough or scramble around in the new offense.

solarcane

I think Martell stays and Lashlee coaches him up, I dont think he plays qb or starts at another position though.

I think this Lashlee guy might be this years version of coach Feeley. A guy that brings completely new 21st century tactics that the kids buy into right away.

Tony Adams donates a million to U Baseball

The University of Miami baseball program, which begins spring practice Friday to prepare for a season that is expected to be its best in years, received more good news Thursday when a former player made an extremely generous donation.

Canes baseball alumnus Tommy Adams donated $1 million toward the Hurricanes’ Baseball Facility Enhancement Campaign — the largest gift toward baseball by a former UM player.

UM announced that “in recognition of his generous gift, the home plate entrance to Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field will be renamed the Tommy Adams Main Entrance.’’

I'm expecting that some of the motivation problems that plagued us will persist a bit into 2020. Wagner will be taken very, very likely and I'm guessing that they score a touchdown at some point, just like Savannah State did a few years ago.

Agreed DTX...we have started out so many times since 2003 with it shiny new powerful....and every time we end up tearing the shit out of it and it ends up destroyed in the ditch! Hell the tires off of all the starts are fuel for KYs dumpster fire...lot of tires lot of fire eh KY?

I like the OC move OL move they are good; Manhole did a good job changing. That being said, results ...winning are the real measuring stick here. Hope and change can be a good thing...but for us since 2003 it always becomes despair and stagnation....same old dumpster fire!

It all may look good in the spring practice and game...but show me success...winning...on the field in a real game...not yucking it up and half ass blocking your buddies in a non competitive spring game...I will see what happens...the real deal not some hopeless wet dream...is imperative

It's sad the environment that's been created by society for our young adults. During their kiddie years there was no winners or losers...everyone got a trophy. I see CMD hired Benedict Hyppolite as an offensive graduate assistant. Hyppolitte was the offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach at Florida Memorial. Prior to that he spent two season as the Carol City. He also was the offensive coordinator at Booker T. and I believe at Miramar.

I recall that Hyppolitte is considered one of the bright young offensive football coaches in South Florida, and he was well respected offensive coach. If permitted, IMO, he can help the Canes recruit offense and establish relationships locally. He ran the spread offense at Carol City, Booker T and Miramar, and his offenses were always potent. He is also young with high energy, but very mature.

I also like Brewer and the other graduate assistants that they have recently hired. They appear to be better fits for what the Canes are trying to accomplish on offense.

Per Bruce Feldman -

The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman, who is considered a historian on the modern era of Miami Hurricanes Football and a UM alum, cautioned about getting expectations too high for the 2020 Hurricanes.

“I would say don’t get your hopes up too high on D’Eriq King and the offense…With D’Eriq King, I would say pump the brakes on it a little bit because he had one terrific season and I don’t know—as a graduate transfer, some times they work out great and some times they get underwhelming,” Feldman said on The Audible Podcast. “I think he will be the best quarterback that they got, but I wouldn’t expect him to be a guy that lit a lot of people up in the AAC in 2018.”

Maybe he has learned from those mistakes. We will see. The offseason is long.

I like the hires so far. I would also like to see some better decisions concerning playing time and developing the players that they recruit.

If the Canes are recruiting the right players and developing those players, there will be no need for such a heavy reliance on the transfer portal.

In the case of the Canes, CMD is going to the transfer portal for players on offense, defense and special teams. In addition, they are seeking transfers at the most critical positions, and players they recruited are transferring or not developing into starters. That needs to change. CMD needs more Rousseau's and less Herbert's on this team.

Go Canes!!

How we compete against Mich State,UNC,WF and FSU to me will tell us how we are doing.

Starting the season off against 3 punching bags, and no off week at the beginning of the season should have us all feeling a lot better.

King could be deadly with his arm and legs against these teams and
get the team fired up behind him.

This early schedule is very friendly to having a new qb and offense.

I also like Manny letting his recent moves speak for his ability rather than the Twitter blitzkrieg he used last season.

. . . and i guess considering the last decade of canes football, it's a very understandable malady

You’ve given them an A+ for all these off-season moves but the only test that matters is winning games. Manny is not capable of doing that and Blake is not capable of finding someone who can.

Posted by: Schnelly | January 23, 2020 at 08:21 AM

manny has 1 year behind him; we won't know if he's truly capable of change until we at least see him go thru a 2nd year

everyone knows manny & blake are not getting fired during this off-season

. . . those who want to jump up n down and shake their cages are welcome to do so; i guess to show off their pessimistic bona fides

. . . but the only thing that really makes sense right now, is to watch the changes manny is making and then see if that produces wins in the 2020 season

I know you’re the resident optimist, but my point was Manny and Blake should be fired. So I doesn’t matter what moves he makes, he’s terrible and the team is going to be terrible while they’re running the show.

You’ve given them an A+ for all these off-season moves but the only test that matters is winning games. Manny is not capable of doing that and Blake is not capable of finding someone who can.

A much improving UNC.
FSU, which still has a lot of talent.
Va. TECH, where 4 out 5 times we look like we have never played a football game.
Then u got to throw in one game where everything that can go wrong, will go wrong and that's usually to a team that has no business being on the field with us or our annual head scratching say what game.

No, I asked you first and, as I suspected, you don't have an answer. So I'm going to ignore you on the topic for the rest of the season now until you offer up a plan to improve the situation instead of rhetorical dead end on a joke of a non-solution complaint.

Nice job Rod Miller, outplayed Vernon Jr., just barely, but that's the step in the direction he's got to go to get his team out of the place it's in with the defensive liability midget guards in the starting lineup sinking their chances as a program.

The Canes had 6 assists and 13 turnovers last night against Duke. That low assist-to-turnover ratio has been a major problem all season.

The Canes have to work too hard to score. Too often, the Canes score from individual isolation, rather than cuts, spacing, crisp passing. The Canes really don't have a true point guard. Lykes is a good player, but he is more of a scorer, not a passer or ball-handler. Good teams have 15 or more assists and fewer turnovers-- the Canes are not a good team. The Canes cannot expect to go far this season because they cannot pass the ball. The Canes need to recruit and develop better passers.

Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | January 22, 2020 at 12:04 PM

yes, windy ... your analysis is right on
. . . but i'll repeat:

1-we lost 2 entire years of recruiting = there has not been enough continuity playing with each other

. . . i like wong, beverly and walker, but they are not 5*, one-and-done guys, so they need to slowly grow up

2- injuries are killing us; gak gone; stone has played in it about 5 games and was just getting back to being able to play meaningful minutes; then "bam";
mcgusty, lykes, waardenburg all playing with injuries

3- which means they don't have enough guys for good practices
. . . hard to develop that assist-type feel without more practice with one another

so i'll say it again: COACH L IS DOING AS GOOD AS POSSIBLE AFTER HAVING BOTH THE FBI AND THE NCAA HANG ON TO HIS BALLS
. . . and he's not a complainer either; he's a teacher and a roll-up-your-sleeves guy

I was relatively accurate back in August 2019, where I picked Miami to go 6-6 in a worst case scenario (presuming the offense was as bad in games as it was in that scrimmage) and had us losing to FIU.

TonyCane

A month ago I analyzed Miami’s schedule and predicted a 4-8 record. This presumed no changes to the team. I had our PPG declining to a measly 15 pt avg.

Needless to say that prediction goes into the ashbin of history. Haven’t done the new set yet, but at minimum we should see a 4 game improvement.

Schnelly

Well all have been addressed, some beyond our wildest expectations. So just as I called Manny's first season an unmitigated disaster and a complete failure, I'll give him an irrefutable A+ for what he's done since.

Miami picked up a commitment San Diego Lincoln three-star wide receiver Keyshawn Smith on Tuesday.

Smith, who is ranked by 247Sports as the nation's No. 127 wide receiver prospect in the Class of 2020, signed with Washington State last month during the Early Signing Period, but was released from his NLI after Mike Leach left Pullman to be the head coach at Mississippi State.

The Hurricanes made contact with Smith just a few days ago. He's the type of wide receiver that can excel in Rhett Lashlee's new offense given his ball skills and ability to get open. UM tight ends coach Stephen Field is the one that gets credit for the commitment.

Smith caught 46 passes for 808 yards and eight touchdowns as a senior. He also returned a punt and kickoff for touchdowns while adding three more scores on the ground. One of Smith's best plays at the prep level landed him on ESPN's "You Got Mossed!" as he went up-and-over a defender in the state playoffs for a touchdown.

I would counter with this...if you were Manny and saw how horribly your first season went - outside of resigning would these not be the moves you (or any other coach) might do?

Yes I do agree with the moves...but I would counter with this...are these moves, (from a coach who was not close to being qualified to be the HC, and wanting to keep his job) going to immediately change the lamest O, OL, and QBs in the country, and propel you into the elite of college football...say Top 10?...

I would say no....therefore moves that LOOK good SOUND good, while showing a willingness to change (where prior HCs would not) do not translate into the most important aspect of Sports...WINNING....therefore, I will wait and see, then assess how effective these moves are...paper aint nothing but something to start a fire with...and we got a dumpster fire of tires, paper, cardboard...and gasoline...so paper does nothing for me....what happens on the field....thats the deal...anybody can lose...but you got to step up and be counted to win...its all that matters on the field...paper is for writers....the field is a lonely club...For Winners Only!!!

See Alpine, what I'm talking about the above post from the master of garble. Basketball is plain English!

The Word From Da Herb

Va, Va it will be alright.
Yes Manny coached like his Qb's played, pretty bad.
Manny didn't create this offensive mess. Took a gamble on Enos who most of us thought was a good hire and it blew the bananas out of the tail pipe.
Barry, hey here's an NFL guy, should be great for the OH line, it crumbled like Adobe bricks. He inherited most of those goofs, the problem u can't make home made biscuits without dough!
Stumblefield, might as been hobo, from all his coaching stops. He taught the art of not getting open.
Patke, who to The Herb is a waste of a position coach, got SPT'S dumped in his lap and wouldn't u know it Bubby Yips Baxa, couldn't kick a chip shot FG.
I could go on but no use in rehashing that nightmare until the next time our qb goes color blind 3 possessions in a row or we miss a 25yd FG.
Flashbacks start to creep in.
The question do we have enough time to get these players to gel together?
Manny made several changes and even went all the way to Cali to get a 3 star Wr. Don't know how many states are between us and Cali but dam if I went that far I believe this dude should ready to play now and be a stud. We did need another WR.
Now let's get a recruiting machine top shelf WR coach.

orange 'n green in the vein

nemo, you complain about The Pimp every season the team isn't contending for a top four seed in the tournament but the halfway point is near so I'll just ask yet again: who are you proposing to replace the coach with?

Miami now has two remaining scholarships that it can offer in this period.

Would love to see one go to Avantae Williams and another to a transfer offensive lineman.

It seems to me that less than 4 weeks after a nadir, the program has the most valuable commodity you can have. Something that was lost at various points in the last 15 years.

Hope.

I'm watching the basketball game (UM v. Duke).

Miami may lose this game by 40 points (or more), unless Coach K takes pity on Coach L by mainly playing third stringers (and maybe ball boys) in the second half.

P.S. Somebody please tell Dick Vitale that no one cares any more about Laranaga's playing days at Providence or his Cinderella 2006 team at George Mason. During his nine years at UM, his winning percentage against ACC teams is only about 55 percent. Not good!

I agree with a solid F.....he failed and failed badly....but not alone!

The BOT and BJ put the program in this position by putting a Good DC in a position he had no business in....he had no HC experience. He should have gone to Temple...a good place to try being a HC...not here especially with the miserable failures since 2003. A full scale nationwide search should have been done....as should have for Butchs' replacement, Cokers, Onions, and AlPas CMRs...full real searchs for real coaches...

The coaching staff failed....OL, OC, QB, STs worst in the nation...they did not coach....they collected a salary and losing was opportunity to make lousy excuses.

The players failed.. did not care....they are entitled brats....crybabies....dont care about winning...just be with teammates...cry Shaq...dont mind losing...dont care....except to say I plqay for the U..so what? you had a lousy losing season..

and all of them above should have declined a bowl....f##k a bowl and the $.....you got shut out and embarrassed made a fool...after a terrible season...

So yes they all Failed..now credit to Manhole for making some moves LOOK good on paper, getting rid of some coaches who were bad and getting guys who HAVE had some success... and getting guys who LOOK like they can play...I like the moves...BUT they do not mean a thing on how the look via #'s or on paper....what matters is how they ARE on the field and in practice....thats when one can look at them and see real results...that means improvement effort commitment attitude humility....WINNING...thats what I will look for!

Keshawn Smith from San Diego. If I recall correctly, Lincoln High School is in Southeast San Diego, which is an urban, working-class neighborhood, with similar demographics as Miami.

They have good football over there, and it appears Smith has played multiple positions on offense receiving and rushing the football, which should fit well in the spread offense.

If he brings a positive attitude and work ethic, he can eventually contribute at some point down the line. Not sure if he is ready to contribute next season, but the spread needs more shifty WRs and he fits the bill

Go Canes!!

I gave him a resounding F for last season.

I think we a ll know about the 12% bus....its always been funny to laugh at....peoples jobs on the bus...the mechanics the sayings....Do not think anybody took it seriously.

I have never thought 12-0 since i blogged here. Last time was 2000-01, 2001-02 and 2002-03...when we were the best ever.

Honest I do not make predictions...would say next year better brand of football....a little progress....possibly make a bowl...possibly....this dumpster fire is not going 12-0.....it may never ever again....we do not get the talent, we do not coach our players, they are never held accountable player or coach, we are outdated in all 3 phases of attack,....and we have been so bad for so long that kids think we have been bad forever.....they have no clue as to whaqt we HAVE done well....

Shout out to The Herb for "stumble bumpkins". Made me LOL!
