NEW BLOG IS UP!

VA Cane

Excellent observations DTX....you are exactly spot on with your posts toady...lot of good stats from TC.
Things look like the D will be good..got some guys in, and some guys gonna have to step up compete and play.
STs kicking got better as well. Still need work but kicking should be much better.
Getting the O up to speed quick will be the challenge...there will be growth pains but lest hope for some learning as well.
Got to feel a bit better about things...we will see!

Thanks DTX my boy was a good center...and guy. Appreciate all the nice thoughts from all of you!

Herb - Coming from winning programs means those kids are used to winning. They’re also used to beating up lesser teams and in HS that typically means lesser athletes. The athleticism gap can be tremendous in HS. Easily out-talenting other teams means U don’t need superior technique or work ethic. Sometimes being a 4 star guy on a winning team equals believing less in hard work and effort and more in one’s innate ability. We’ve had way too much experience these past 15 years with guys used to winning but with no idea of what it takes to win at the next level and no stomach for the effort. Fingers crossed this too will change. The worm has to turn eventually, right???

DallasTX Cane

VA - Sorry to hear about your friend. Tough. 62 is too soon. Hang in there.

Al - thanks for the kind words.

Whoa nelly! Slow down big fella. That’s a lotta superlatives in a short sentence even for U. “Remarkable” last 20 days? LOL. It’s certainly been better than expected. But then again, expectations been pretty darn low around here lately. I’m personally impressed when he gets thru an entire presser without inserting foot into mouth.

Just messin w/U GO. Love your enthusiasm

The Herb

Well, well, well, Now The Herb can say dam straight and Roche to boot, nice package deal!
A Kicker
A Qb
A CB and Rumph got him
A DE, a nice couple days.
Ok Manny, I'll quit calling u Manure for now.
Ok , let's finish this up, with a couple upper echelon OH Linemen and either a WR or another DB.
Really we one of each, especially another WR.
Finally get a good WR coach who can coach separation and the art of getting open plus be a A-1 recruiter.
We had an easy street schedule this past year and choked. The 2020 schedule will be slightly tougher, just because GT, VA Tech and UNC, will be much improved.
The key to our defense will Be Ford and Silvera, they have to get a better push up the middle.
Finally Manny needs to get the tudes straight and dump the boat anchors, William's or Perry, Dykstra and Hillary. Maybe Herbert. If u have been here for 3 years and u can't beat out a 2 star player, u need to take a hike.

VA Cane

Nice highlights from king....he seems to move well...can throw moving...senses when to move from pressure. Got to be better than what we have...williams could not move...or didnt...but he had to be frustrated with that leaky cauldron....my problem with him is the attitude...another crybaby...Perry...he does not care...hes in the adult film industry...and Martell.....may be a nice kid...but just do not see it with him either...

Ride or die!

VA Cane

Not a Manhole fan from the beginning, but have to agree he has taken some steps that while they do not propel us into the Top 10, they are improvements that many of our other HCs did not take or even try to change.

He did keep the class together and has added some better players; get rid of the deadwood players coach...all 3 QBs need to go...show them the door.

Nice hire at OC; he will need a lot of help to implement the new system...he has no OL and other positions look average.

Kicker addition is a much needed upgrade from Bubba....show that kid the door...he is terrible.

QB had some nice stats...looks like a good player....but he has a sieve/spaghetti strainer/swiss cheese OL that is horrible...he will be challenged.

A good DE will help a depleted D...hope it comes through.

So there are some changes in place....good sign. I think it will be a challenging learning season...some growth some change and perhaps a couple wins more...perhaps...I never make predictions I look at results. Give Manhole some credit..he acted as he had to do so.

Thanks Roachcoach and TSully.....my boy was a good one...good player good friend good man. Will be missed!

LISTEN TO THIS MAN

solarcane

We have known Manny N for 15 years, when He said King was a Cane I posted it, then I wondered why guys were still doubting he was coming to Miami.
Manny isn't into fake news.

Soupster
is this the part where we start," anything less than !0 wins, a coastal championship, 4 or 5 first round picks starts?..

Old Skool

Correction, adding a tackle who's not a turnstile and maybe another starting O lineman would ice the cake and light the candles.

With Roche on board, hopefully Zion can learn to be more than a tomato can or a sparring partner for defensive ends.

Terrance M Sullivan

VA Sorry for the news on your Friend. Prayers 🙏!

Old Skool

Manny knows to win the off-season All we need is a top-flight WR coach and we'll all start feeling like Tim Tebow on his wedding night.

Although at 32, I would think he might be wondering: "If it feels this good, what would it have been like 14 years ago when I was at my sexual peak?"

TonyCane

Roche is now a Cane as well.

Well done, Manny.

Go Canes!!

What an offseason for Manny.

Kept a solid recruiting class together after and is adding quality late
Fired his inept OC and brought in perhaps the top young guy available
Fired his OL coach and replaced him with a respected spread guy with HC experience
Landed the top grad transfer kicker in the country
Landed a Heisman caliber QB
About to land the top DE grad transfer in the country

Was ready to give up on him after his catastrophic first year, but his remarkable last 20 days has really impressed me.

BigWindyCane1

I read that it is likely that former Carol City HC Benedict Hyppolite, the current OC/wR coach at Florida Memorial, was hired as a GA to replace Dallas Crawford. Hyppolitte was one of the more talented young offensive coaches in South Florida. Good pickup by the Canes. If CMD empowers him, Hyppolitte should help with recruiting and relationships with local coaches and recruits. He also really knows the spread and how to utilize local talent.

Guess that's why Sheriffs ain't here.....the soft little fellow did not have what it takes...or the desire to make sacrifices to play and win.....his article is our New Miami....everything is hard out here....this is harder than a job.....I have done more hard work in a day than he will do in a lifetime...poor little butterfly....

Either today or tomorrow, I guess by 5 is all King has left, if he plans on coming here, or else wait until May, that's if LSU doesn't want him. I believe their last day to register is the 23rd. We need the dude to come in for Spring, especially to work with the line. He needs to see those guys in action to see how many Lloyd's Of London policies he'll have to take out!

VA Cane

A bunch of brotherly types....

Agreed Herb....I do not yell and chew people out very often...but I do get vocal...if I got a kid with a problem..whatever..we talk private and i lay it out...and help...but not doing things right in school outside of school in practice or games is unacceptable. Our goal every year is SB....12 games...one game at a time...and its works....i work them hard...but they have embraced my concepts and style...cause they know WE yes WE are going to work very hard...and win together! I can still chew em up and spat em out when I got to....nice gives you guys like Sherriffs who are entitlted to be a BRAT...a loser...even Shaq...who played good for 4 years...a little soft...want to be with my boys...hell with that i would be mad as hell about losing....everybody should hate losing...

Thanks Herb....Charlie was a dear friend...and a fine ce3nter...who worked hard to get there...

VA Cane

I agree Herb....winning gets harder at every level....I QB'd a HS team ...38 in a row 2 States....I was like KD11 in that I was surrounded by future college players...I went to college man was it different...even in the 70s...played for danny ford who later coached Clemson to NC...man we were never great but held our own...beat TAMU and Houston and they were big timers...but it changes.

We have guys who won...but they were good for HS...you get by on talent skill...but execution fundamentals block tackle catch run throw eat right sleep right go to class study film compete...is a level higher (but hey Sheriffs it wont kill ya little butterfly azz) and you have to continue to teach the basic fundamentals and the new concepts it takes to play at this level. They got to be coached.

We have to be the worst fundamental team in the country...we do not execute any fundamentals...yea we get by...but winning? NOT!
My young guys and college guys are good players but we win because we keep learning new attacks and skills but they are built on a strong foundation of execution and fundamentals....and we win....yes our talent is good and better....but we DOMINATE because we are sound in basics. The staffs of Clappy Onion AlPa CMR and Manhole do not teach fundamentals how the hell can a player execute difficult advanced concepts if he does not know the basics?

TheHerb

Sorry to hear, VA.

TheHerb

Most all these kids come from winning programs so they know about winning but there's a big step up, especially in eating, film study and in the weight room. The game is faster, so how are we taking kids that have been winners and making them into also rans? Sorry azz coaching. Coaches allowing bad habits to fester. Special treatment for some and the team sees it and knows it. Some problems on offense have been on going before Manny took over and he hasn't done much to change it.
No hardcore coaches on staff. A bunch of brotherly types.

VA Cane

I just had some stunning news....a dear friend of mine, Charlie H. has passed away at 62. I played QB in sandlot and he was my center in 6th and 7th grade. He was also a center on our 10-0 8th grade team. He was a great guy....we were always laughing and cutting up. He was special. He later worked at the PD as a dispatcher and other jobs. My Dad was in the FBI and my mom Social Services; they worked with the PD and held him in high esteem. Sad to lose your guys....he was a special one!

BigWindyCane1

And who was the best overall since Vince Young? It was 3 star recruit Colt McCoy.

Posted by: TonyCane | January 20, 2020 at 10:56 AM

Don’t forget three star Patrick Mahommes and three star Lamar Jackson

VA Cane

It is not our abilities and skills that show who we truly are....it is our choices.

One can be big fast strong smart....but if one chooses to be lazy in the weight room, doesn't put in the extra work in weight room, film study, listen and learn from coaches, learn from you fellow players, dedicate yourself to being the best, compete all out to be the starter, hate losing, and when on the field hate hit hurt (low hard clean fast) your opponent....then you end up a loser....our people for the most part are not doing this....and if a coach is not holding them to a standard...wanting to win and making all sacrifices needed to make it happen....then both HAVE to GO...NOW!

"If you don't live it, it won't come out your horn" Charlie "Bird" Parker renowned jazz musician.

guess thats why Sheriffs aint here.....the soft little fellow did not have what it takes...or the desire to make sacrifices to play and win.....his article is our New Miami....everythings hard out here....this is harder than a job.....I have done more hard work in a day than he will do in a lifetime...poor little butterfly....

VA Cane

Tony great #s....DTX you hit it...execution of fundamentals, competing...outright fist fighting to get on the field, playing with intensity, dying to win...hating losing...all as a team...winning comes first then....confidence in ones self...and team follows. I am a coach....and I have never been into swag..or call it that...my players confidence is toned down more....but thats ok....winning makes you happy...makes you dance....as long as you do it with each other ok. But it got to where these kids were coming in here and goofing off, not working in practice or weight room, expecting to win by just having a U helmet and walk out there....does not happen. It has been moons my friend!!!

Soup its looking grand....custom everything for the ground up....all we got to do is get our assignments load up and we will go on a 15 game tear...beat everyone no problem.....oooppps....I just stole The New Miami playbook from Pornboy....just show up and everything is lovely
!!!!

TC I think all the QBs started out as cannot miss...but based on what I have to have from a QB....I really think they all have been average....some higher in the category some lower....but all average...a key factor is we have had what I call mostly below average OLs...some maybe average but none GOOD!

DallasTX Cane

Thanks Tony

DallasTX Cane

In my very humble opinion, the “old Cane culture” of hard work, competition for every spot/every snap, crush your opponent, then celebrate when you’ve accomplished something got lost many many moons ago. It swag first as if swag creates victory instead of the opposite. Once this happened, the 4-5 star guys coming in, not all but most, either created or entered an environment of entitlement. They ASSUMED that being a star and playing at THE U = NFL and loads of $$$. The 3 star guys could never assume anything. All they have is hard work. Hence those guys outworked the others and became our best players. Ranking is so speculative with 16-22 year olds anyway that several probably became 4 star guys but were never recognized. BUT, most out worked the higher ranked players to become great. Character - heart and work ethic - separates most great athletes from merely above average.

TonyCane

Dallas...it was all of that.

Gilbert got hurt. Texas changed OCs and systems. David Ash (3 Star player) became the favorite, and Gilbert transferred. Case McCoy got a bit of prefer trial treatment due to the success of his brother, and became the starter for a
Little while.

TonyCane

. . . but maybe that's with al the positions, come to think about it

Posted by: alpine | January 20, 2020 at 11:05 AM

Possibly. It just sticks out with quarterbacks more as it is such a vital, visible position. If you think about it, who were our best wide receivers in the last 12 years?

Leonard Hankerson, Philip Dorsett, and Alan Hurns. All of them were three star players.

Our best tight end in the same period was David N'joku, also a three star player out of high school.

DallasTX Cane

Tony - Didn’t Gilbert get injured? I seem to recall he looked pretty good but got hurt and next thing U know, Case McCoy was running the show. Do I have that timeline right? I also thought Mac gave preference to Case either because of what Colt accomplished or because he hoped to get lightning in a bottle twice.

I’ll go on record as saying that while Turf Face certainly earned his name his last 2 seasons here, I believe that most of what derailed Kyle’s career wasn’t his fault. He got sacked about a hundred times his first year starting and had how many OC’s, 4 or 5? The program was devolving into a sh-t show, both coaching and talent not performing and he wasn’t the leader needed to get at least the players in line.

TonyCane

Close to 40 is a start. We need to be at least in the 50's to get into the top 8.
We need to bring in each recruiting cycle at least 14 four star players or better.

Posted by: TheHerb | January 20, 2020 at 10:55 AM

Here's how it's trended:

4 & 5 Star Players Signed (% of total class)

2017: 10 (40%)
2018: 17 (68%)
2019: 11 (46%) COACHING CHANGE

Green Bay’s been barely getting by & praying for a miracle for most of the season. Take away their HOF QB and they’re an 8-8 team. Look at their roster on the O side... ain’t much there.

I say look at 2 things across both conf champ games...

1. Trenches. Who had the best Big Uglies??
2. Defense. Specifically open field tackling.

KC & SF Lines on both sides of the ball were far better.

SF defenders are some of the best open field 1v1 tacklers, probably the best, in the league. How many times have you seen a defender bounce off a runner or try to strip the ball instead of tackle? SF aggressively tackles which limits yards after catch and blows up attempts to get the ball to the outside of their D.

Should be a good game.

. . . and this is with (usually) at least a couple years to look at + huge QB-experts checking them out

. . . but maybe that's with al the positions, come to think about it

Big, big day for this program today.

Posted by: Go Canes!! | January 20, 2020 at 09:50 AM

Agreed. It's interesting to see the impact (or lack thereof) of star ratings for quarterbacks.

Look at Miami's quarterbacks since Dorsey:

2003-2004: Brock Berlin (5 stars) Above average
2005-2007: Kyle Wright (5 stars) Below average as time went on (although limited by talent surrounding him)
2004-2007: Kirby Freeman (4 stars) Below average
2007: Robert Marve (4 stars) Average
2008-2011: Jacory Harris (4 stars) Average
2012-2013: Stephen Morris (3 stars) Abve average
2014-2016: Brad Kayaa (4 stars) Above average
2017-2018: Malik Rozier (3 stars) Average
2018-2019: N'Kosi Perry (4 stars) Average
2019: Jarren Williams (4 stars) Average

This doesn't include the HT quarterbacks who never even played, such as Kevin Olsen (4 stars) or Jack Allison (4 stars).

Meanwhile 3 star quarterback D'Eriq King is an elite level quarterback. Johnny Manziel, Joe Burrows, and Marcus Mariotta were also three star players coming out of high school yet all became transcendent players for their college programs. It really points out how much of a crap shoot recruiting can be, at least at the quarterback position.

And if you think this is just Miami, let me tell you about Texas. Since Vince Young here is the list of Highly Touted quarterbacks who have signed with them:

2006: Jevon Snead (4 stars): Did not win starting job, transferred to Ole Miss after 2 seasons
2009: Garrett Gilbert (5 stars): Ok, transferred
2010: Connor Wood (4 stars): Transferred after 1 year
2011: Connor Brewer (4 stars): Transferred after 1 year
2013: Tyrone Swoops (4 stars): Average
2014: Jerrod Heard (4 stars): Average, converted to wide receiver after two years
2016: Shane Buchelle (4 stars): Average, transferred to SMU and enjoyed strong success
2017: Sam Ehlinger (4 stars): Above average - borderline elite
2018: Casey Thompson (4 stars): Currently backup
2018: Cameron Rising (4 stars): Transferred to Utah after one season
2019: Roschon Johnson (4 stars): Converted to running back

And who was the best overall since Vince Young? It was 3 star recruit Colt McCoy.

TheHerb

Close to 40 is a start. We need to be at least in the 50's to get into the top 8.
We need to bring in each recruiting cycle at least 14 four star players or better.
This will not happen, as long we find ways to lose to teams who have less talent than we do.
Coaching matters. Have a few pieces of drift wood still on staff and we know who they are. Have an A.D. who don't get it! If we ever get a coach that gets it, it won't matter about Blake but 2 that don't get it equal failure.
Do I believe we upgraded with the 2 new hires, yes. The WR hire has to be better and a good recruiter and that is what's holding us back, is our lack of a couple ace recruiters plus a Qb and an offensive line.

BigWindyCane1

@flasportsbuzz
... And one other UM note: Another front-seven experienced UM defender (NO, not Rousseau, thankfully) is exploring transferring. UM aware and looking for front 7 help

LOL. When he wrote something abut "BSing the professor", I thought how dumb can you be? Now it is forever out on the web. Employers check social media and know how to use Google.

VA - I am with you - we still have Blake James as AD and Mandy as HC. It won't be hard to be a little better than last year with Lashlee but the o-line was a sieve so I am wondering how much better it will be this season.

Green Bay looked outmatched and slow yesterday, never really in it. I didn't see the earlier game because I was driving. I hope the Chiefs win the SB.

alpine

https://caneswarning.com/2020/01/19/miami-football-has-conflicting-reports-emerge-about-qb-deriq-king/

- we can probably look forward to a few more cloudy tweets from no-nothings before king's declaration

- don't believe me either; i reported that king was holed up with highsmith in cleveland
. . . turns out, he's been hanging out in the CANES tunnel with the fog-blasters turned up

- emerge from the smoke? or seek the glitter elsewhere?
final jeopardy question . . .

Schnelly

with Manny at the helm we could acquire every great UM player there ever was and we’d still play flat against Central Michigan and Lose to FIU. We’d at least score three in the bowl game though.

Jay Gruden for HC?

BigWindyCane1

When Scott Frost was at UCF, he recruited and developed speedy players like Raheem Mostert to play in his offense. I think Lashlee will do that too. I think the Canes’ recruiting targets and profiles on offense will change dramatically under Lashlee

BigWindyCane1

Raheem Mostert was a great football and track athlete at New Smyrna Beach, which is in Volusia County north of Orlando. I recall he was pretty fast, but not highly recruited like Derrick Henry was from Yulee. I don’t recall if he was even considered a RB or WR.

Mostert has been an NFL journeyman, but Kyle Shannahan knows how to use speedy backs, by putting them in space and allowing them to use their speed. Good coaching

If you don't think that coaching and play calling matter just watch the Green Bay vs San Fran game. San Fran is light years ahead of GB in all aspects.

Great defense and a running game. Kyle Shanahan had a great game plan, and he really designed a great running game to attack the Green Bay defense. SF offense dominated the Green Bay defense with only 8 passes and 77 yards passing. Good old fashioned football, with a modern twist. I think Lashlee will design a rushing attack, using similar concepts.

Should be a great matchup with Andy REID, who relies primarily on the passing game, although he used the rushing attack to kill the clock after he got a lead. His route concepts, offensive design and play calling has been outstanding—having Mahomes helps a little too.

Good coaching means to design you game plan around your personnel—play to your strengths and minimize your weaknesses.

Nice play by Jimmy Graham on that TD! Too little, too late though

Supposed to start classes tuesday

@Manny_Navarro

"Here I come to save the day!"
"That means that Mighty Mouse is on the way".

UM led FSU 69-66 with under a minute to go in regulation after a Chris Lykes jumper . . .
Lykes made back-to-back threes in overtime . . .
Lykes led all scorers with 24 points, including six three-pointers.

Unfortunately, FSU was way too tough for Lykes to "save the day."

I think King is holding out for LSU or Oakl. To jump in. As much as we need this dude, I'd hesitate a sec. If I had to play behind our offensive line.
So Rumph finally, at the last waking moment got his yearly quota of one CB. Good for him.

So... who's y'alls pick for the first QB to hit the portal?

I have my money on this guy:

Even a blind squirrel...

BigWindyCane1

Raize,
I think you are right. Here is my guess on the probabilities for transfers from the QB room:

JW15 - 90% chance he transfers
Kosi - 35% (attitude is positive, but still a small chance he moves on)
Martell - 50% (likes the spread, but he will not play this season. If he isn’t the QB2 on the depth chart, he definitely transfers)
Matocha - 70% (Enos pro style QB, who isn’t built for this offense. If he doesn’t have an elite arm, he will transfer)
Van Dyke - 0%

raizecane

I saw some improvement on Perry's attitude this year. I think he stays but Williams needs to jetsons his ass out.

Terrance M Sullivan

All 3 QB'S need to be gone. The End.

TJL

Jarren followed by Kosi

Solar
Do you have inside info?
All I hear is all sources point towards the U but nothing in stone yet

VA Cane

The deceit of motion and movement really can freeze a D...and if all your guys Big Fellas, backs receivers do it really fast with a sense of urgency...like its Death....you really can control the pace...and the game...then turn that D loose....and beat em on STs.....hard to lose folks!

I knew a college team that did that once...you know compete even fight to to play, execute fundamentals.....fast with urgency as a team....like if you dont its DIE...hit and hurt as you attack...in all 3 phases....Oh...that was uh...Miami!!

VA Cane

KC looking sharp....D has gotten better....but that attack...great skill guys great blocking...and PM15 is too good....very good kid...plays like a vet....thats how you run that attack...run sets pass up vice versa...got to have that QB.....this is a lot like I try to do it...I like Andy Reed

UMike

So... who's y'alls pick for the first QB to hit the portal?

King is a Cane

New OC
New offense
New field goal kicker
New Qb
This must be be what Manny thought last year was supposed to be

VA Cane

Great to see you here KY.....lots of tweets, rumors....and the fire is already roaring....it just adds to the fire my friend....oh it is hot...feel it through my screen!

alpine

but if you watched the game, you had to love the referreeing

. . . lots of physicalness, but the whistles mostly stayed in the pocket and they could play on

alpine

wow, womens bb blown out by bottom feeder notre dame

. . . they're trying their best to see if they can be the worst in the ACC

. . . trying to root for meier, but her team is absolutely horrible this year!

KYcane

Remember when you are knocked out cold...laying on you back...you are looking up too...

Nice one VA

VA Cane

TC if he is smart and surveys the landscape....they lose Pass Coordinator QB lots of skill...but are NCs...and will continue the attack they won with...and he knows spread system...or come to a team that was 6-7...no OL and no prospect of being any better...new coaches...no real skill guys....not hard to figure this one out to me either...

VA Cane

In football...in life...I never believe it til its so. King may be a nice addition....numbers look good. Remember he played in the American Athletic Conference...not sure how good it is...but we are in ACC maybe not sure how good it is either.

Nice new OC and OL coach....but how much is there to work with...OL is terrible....will be terrible and there is no saviors in the new class to make it top notch. Backs and WRs are...well average. Perry and Williams cannot run this new attack....and with Perrys scatterbrain non focused porn attitude...and Williams cry baby cry pout attitude....they do not work for me...never have. Martell has run it....but could not run it at OSU...top team...and could not start. All that shake crap in the bowl....not impressed at all.

Look what is on the 2020 roster...Carson Proctor Ryan Rizk....who in the hell are they? Never played. Matocha...did he take a snap.....and the Van Dyke kid.....freshman unproven...average #s.....so a horrible line no QBs to speak of....coming off a losing season with new coaches and system...I do not expect much...if any real improvement against any good team...Someone on another sight...said Canes fan since 2012...things looking up....yea right on...

Remember when you are knocked out cold...laying on you back...you are looking up too...lets not get too excited or get a bunch of high hopes...I will wait and see....remember the AD is BJ and the HC is Manhole.....neither of whom I am impressed with or would call a winner....neither has insight knows the game or their job...IJS

TonyCane

Perhaps it’s me being pessimistic, but until King actually signs I think he goes to LSU.

BigWindyCane1

4* CB Isaiah Dunson from TUCKER (GA) commits to the Canes! Good work by Rumph

Beyond Basura

Why would anyone believe a thing Manny tweets out? I remember that guy tweeting Gruden agreed to a 3.6M deal to coach the canes. He’s has no credibility.

Dam, say this ain't so.
Just read where King hasn't blessed the U yet.

yep . .. latest tweet has him holed up in cleveland with highsmith

TheHerb

Dam, say this ain't so.
Just read where King hasn't blessed the U yet. Who to believe. Supposedly still considering other options.
Should kept my mouth shut.
