After we proved beyond a reasonable doubt that scoring is easy in our last blog feature, we want to be fair and balanced, and therefore we have to present the opposite side of the argument.
For Miami, and for many obvious reasons, scoring was really hard last season.
NativeCane knows that scoring should be easy. But UM makes it really hard.
The Hurricanes averaged a paltry 25.7 points in 2019. If you take out the 63 points they scored against Bethune Cookman it goes down to 22.5 PPG during the season. That is simply not going to get it done in today's college football.
Shirely, I don't have to remind you that Miami used three weeks of "practice" to generate a whopping ZERO points in their bowl game against long time college football powerhouse La Tech. You're very welcome.
RaizeCane knows scoring should be easy. But Miami makes it really hard.
The reasons are many and have been re-hashed here for endless hours over the last few months. There is no need to repeat them, but we will.
It starts with the QB position. A lack of leadership and poor execution will do that every time. The porous offensive line made it worse. It was like the human turnstile Matt Pipho was playing all positions all the time.
Play calling was horrendous. To say it was boring and unimaginative would be exceedingly kind. The scheme was called into question. You can only bang your head on the same wall so many times before your brain goes numb.
KYCane knows that scoring should be easy. But UM makes scoring really hard.
In fact, the Hurricanes scored over 30 points only twice in games that mattered. They scored 35 points in a loss to Virginia Tech and 52 points in a win over Louisville. Not very impressive and not very consistent.
Miami was ranked 129th in third down conversions, 120th in rushing offense, 90th in points scored, and 52nd in passing offense. Not very good at all.
Shirley, this has to improve in 2020.
Terrance knows that scoring is always super easy.
But the Hurricanes make it really, really hard.
I just had some stunning news....a dear friend of mine, Charlie H. has passed away at 62. I played QB in sandlot and he was my center in 6th and 7th grade. He was also a center on our 10-0 8th grade team. He was a great guy....we were always laughing and cutting up. He was special. He later worked at the PD as a dispatcher and other jobs. My Dad was in the FBI and my mom Social Services; they worked with the PD and held him in high esteem. Sad to lose your guys....he was a special one!

Most all these kids come from winning programs so they know about winning but there's a big step up, especially in eating, film study and in the weight room. The game is faster, so how are we taking kids that have been winners and making them into also rans? Sorry azz coaching. Coaches allowing bad habits to fester. Special treatment for some and the team sees it and knows it. Some problems on offense have been on going before Manny took over and he hasn't done much to change it.
No hardcore coaches on staff. A bunch of brotherly types.

Sorry to hear, VA.
Posted by: TheHerb | January 20, 2020 at 02:52 PM
I agree Herb....winning gets harder at every level....I QB'd a HS team ...38 in a row 2 States....I was like KD11 in that I was surrounded by future college players...I went to college man was it different...even in the 70s...played for danny ford who later coached Clemson to NC...man we were never great but held our own...beat TAMU and Houston and they were big timers...but it changes.
We have guys who won...but they were good for HS...you get by on talent skill...but execution fundamentals block tackle catch run throw eat right sleep right go to class study film compete...is a level higher (but hey Sheriffs it wont kill ya little butterfly azz) and you have to continue to teach the basic fundamentals and the new concepts it takes to play at this level. They got to be coached.
We have to be the worst fundamental team in the country...we do not execute any fundamentals...yea we get by...but winning? NOT!
My young guys and college guys are good players but we win because we keep learning new attacks and skills but they are built on a strong foundation of execution and fundamentals....and we win....yes our talent is good and better....but we DOMINATE because we are sound in basics. The staffs of Clappy Onion AlPa CMR and Manhole do not teach fundamentals how the hell can a player execute difficult advanced concepts if he does not know the basics?

A bunch of brotherly types....
Agreed Herb....I do not yell and chew people out very often...but I do get vocal...if I got a kid with a problem..whatever..we talk private and i lay it out...and help...but not doing things right in school outside of school in practice or games is unacceptable. Our goal every year is SB....12 games...one game at a time...and its works....i work them hard...but they have embraced my concepts and style...cause they know WE yes WE are going to work very hard...and win together! I can still chew em up and spat em out when I got to....nice gives you guys like Sherriffs who are entitlted to be a BRAT...a loser...even Shaq...who played good for 4 years...a little soft...want to be with my boys...hell with that i would be mad as hell about losing....everybody should hate losing...
Thanks Herb....Charlie was a dear friend...and a fine ce3nter...who worked hard to get there...

Either today or tomorrow, I guess by 5 is all King has left, if he plans on coming here, or else wait until May, that's if LSU doesn't want him. I believe their last day to register is the 23rd. We need the dude to come in for Spring, especially to work with the line. He needs to see those guys in action to see how many Lloyd's Of London policies he'll have to take out!
Posted by: TheHerb | January 20, 2020 at 03:12 PM
Guess that's why Sheriffs ain't here.....the soft little fellow did not have what it takes...or the desire to make sacrifices to play and win.....his article is our New Miami....everything is hard out here....this is harder than a job.....I have done more hard work in a day than he will do in a lifetime...poor little butterfly....

I read that it is likely that former Carol City HC Benedict Hyppolite, the current OC/wR coach at Florida Memorial, was hired as a GA to replace Dallas Crawford. Hyppolitte was one of the more talented young offensive coaches in South Florida. Good pickup by the Canes. If CMD empowers him, Hyppolitte should help with recruiting and relationships with local coaches and recruits. He also really knows the spread and how to utilize local talent.

I never doubted Manny Navarro for a second š¤£
Anyway, I repeat, this is GREAT NEWS! We have a proven college QB, who has produced at the highest level. Our skill players should be salivating! Lashlee will find a way to use him, and we long-suffering Canes fans have something to be very excited about

Lashlee and King? I am jumping on the 12% bus right now (at least until or unless the wheels come off)!

It's ball check (OK 'man-up' then) time in the QB room. Who's going to run? Who's going to stay and fight for a job?

VA Cane, sorry to hear about the passing of your friend. The older we get, the more often it happens. Very sad...

What an offseason for Manny.
Kept a solid recruiting class together after and is adding quality late
Fired his inept OC and brought in perhaps the top young guy available
Fired his OL coach and replaced him with a respected spread guy with HC experience
Landed the top grad transfer kicker in the country
Landed a Heisman caliber QB
About to land the top DE grad transfer in the country
Was ready to give up on him after his catastrophic first year, but his remarkable last 20 days has really impressed me.

Roche is now a Cane as well.
Well done, Manny.
Posted by: TonyCane | January 20, 2020 at 06:47 PM
Manny knows to win the off-season All we need is a top-flight WR coach and we'll all start feeling like Tim Tebow on his wedding night.
Although at 32, I would think he might be wondering: "If it feels this good, what would it have been like 14 years ago when I was at my sexual peak?"

VA Sorry for the news on your Friend. Prayers š!
Posted by: Terrance M Sullivan | January 20, 2020 at 07:32 PM
Correction, adding a tackle who's not a turnstile and maybe another starting O lineman would ice the cake and light the candles.
With Roche on board, hopefully Zion can learn to be more than a tomato can or a sparring partner for defensive ends.

We have known Manny N for 15 years, when He said King was a Cane I posted it, then I wondered why guys were still doubting he was coming to Miami.
Manny isn't into fake news.
Soupster
is this the part where we start," anything less than !0 wins, a coastal championship, 4 or 5 first round picks starts?..

Not a Manhole fan from the beginning, but have to agree he has taken some steps that while they do not propel us into the Top 10, they are improvements that many of our other HCs did not take or even try to change.
He did keep the class together and has added some better players; get rid of the deadwood players coach...all 3 QBs need to go...show them the door.
Nice hire at OC; he will need a lot of help to implement the new system...he has no OL and other positions look average.
Kicker addition is a much needed upgrade from Bubba....show that kid the door...he is terrible.
QB had some nice stats...looks like a good player....but he has a sieve/spaghetti strainer/swiss cheese OL that is horrible...he will be challenged.
A good DE will help a depleted D...hope it comes through.
So there are some changes in place....good sign. I think it will be a challenging learning season...some growth some change and perhaps a couple wins more...perhaps...I never make predictions I look at results. Give Manhole some credit..he acted as he had to do so.
Thanks Roachcoach and TSully.....my boy was a good one...good player good friend good man. Will be missed!

Nice highlights from king....he seems to move well...can throw moving...senses when to move from pressure. Got to be better than what we have...williams could not move...or didnt...but he had to be frustrated with that leaky cauldron....my problem with him is the attitude...another crybaby...Perry...he does not care...hes in the adult film industry...and Martell.....may be a nice kid...but just do not see it with him either...
Posted by: VA Cane | January 20, 2020 at 09:06 PM
Well, well, well, Now The Herb can say dam straight and Roche to boot, nice package deal!
A Kicker
A Qb
A CB and Rumph got him
A DE, a nice couple days.
Ok Manny, I'll quit calling u Manure for now.
Ok , let's finish this up, with a couple upper echelon OH Linemen and either a WR or another DB.
Really we one of each, especially another WR.
Finally get a good WR coach who can coach separation and the art of getting open plus be a A-1 recruiter.
We had an easy street schedule this past year and choked. The 2020 schedule will be slightly tougher, just because GT, VA Tech and UNC, will be much improved.
The key to our defense will Be Ford and Silvera, they have to get a better push up the middle.
Finally Manny needs to get the tudes straight and dump the boat anchors, William's or Perry, Dykstra and Hillary. Maybe Herbert. If u have been here for 3 years and u can't beat out a 2 star player, u need to take a hike.

But then again, expectations been pretty darn low around here lately. Iām personally impressed when he gets thru an entire presser without inserting foot into mouth.

Herb - Coming from winning programs means those kids are used to winning. Theyāre also used to beating up lesser teams and in HS that typically means lesser athletes. The athleticism gap can be tremendous in HS. Easily out-talenting other teams means U donāt need superior technique or work ethic. Sometimes being a 4 star guy on a winning team equals believing less in hard work and effort and more in oneās innate ability. Weāve had way too much experience these past 15 years with guys used to winning but with no idea of what it takes to win at the next level and no stomach for the effort. Fingers crossed this too will change. The worm has to turn eventually, right???

Excellent observations DTX....you are exactly spot on with your posts toady...lot of good stats from TC.
Things look like the D will be good..got some guys in, and some guys gonna have to step up compete and play.
STs kicking got better as well. Still need work but kicking should be much better.
Getting the O up to speed quick will be the challenge...there will be growth pains but lest hope for some learning as well.
Got to feel a bit better about things...we will see!
Thanks DTX my boy was a good center...and guy. Appreciate all the nice thoughts from all of you!
