After we proved beyond a reasonable doubt that scoring is easy in our last blog feature, we want to be fair and balanced, and therefore we have to present the opposite side of the argument.
For Miami, and for many obvious reasons, scoring was really hard last season.
NativeCane knows that scoring should be easy. But UM makes it really hard.
The Hurricanes averaged a paltry 25.7 points in 2019. If you take out the 63 points they scored against Bethune Cookman it goes down to 22.5 PPG during the season. That is simply not going to get it done in today's college football.
Shirely, I don't have to remind you that Miami used three weeks of "practice" to generate a whopping ZERO points in their bowl game against long time college football powerhouse La Tech. You're very welcome.
RaizeCane knows scoring should be easy. But Miami makes it really hard.
The reasons are many and have been re-hashed here for endless hours over the last few months. There is no need to repeat them, but we will.
It starts with the QB position. A lack of leadership and poor execution will do that every time. The porous offensive line made it worse. It was like the human turnstile Matt Pipho was playing all positions all the time.
Play calling was horrendous. To say it was boring and unimaginative would be exceedingly kind. The scheme was called into question. You can only bang your head on the same wall so many times before your brain goes numb.
KYCane knows that scoring should be easy. But UM makes scoring really hard.
In fact, the Hurricanes scored over 30 points only twice in games that mattered. They scored 35 points in a loss to Virginia Tech and 52 points in a win over Louisville. Not very impressive and not very consistent.
Miami was ranked 129th in third down conversions, 120th in rushing offense, 90th in points scored, and 52nd in passing offense. Not very good at all.
Shirley, this has to improve in 2020.
Terrance knows that scoring is always super easy.
But the Hurricanes make it really, really hard.

25 is all. There are other parameters but u have to pull up them bylaws. Some could count towards last year, if u didn't feel your quota but with the portal and players jumping in at all times of the year, it can get confusing..
It's like an up hill battle to get to 85. I think before these latest defections we were at like 75 or 76.

Man you can see that stars don't matter if you don't have coaches that develop talent.

The new OC Lashlee sure is saying all the right things! He will get the players excited, and I like the new OL coach Garin Justice. I like GJ’s background as a player, OC and OL coach. He is young and energetic, and wants to be OC or HC at a major program. I just hope CMD stays out of their way, and let them coach

2 good articles that detail the type of problems larranaga has to work thru, since being ncaa/fbi-screwed (i can read on my ipad; can not open here on my compi w/o subscription ... maybe someone else can post links):
How Miami is being affected by — and trying to solve — its never-ending depth issue

another thing:
- as i've said several times, i think manny will eventually be a good head coach, despite all his growing pains
. . . that said, one thing i truly dislike about him, is his "blame game" pressers
- coach L NEVER does that, despite having a suitcase full of complaints that he could open & display
. . . he is a class act working as much magic as he can, just rolling up his sleeves and working with what he has
. . . and the last couple years, that hasn't been much
- might there be as accomplished a coach as larranaga be willing to take over the miami program? would blake james be able to find such a person?
. . . i'm sceptical about the answers to the above
. . . and i also think it's too early to show him the door
Posted by: alpine | January 18, 2020 at 01:05 AM
There is a way around the 25 limit, I think it has to do with the EE from the previous class. Like if we had 5 EE's we can now sign 30... something like that. I might not be spot on, but I know you can go over 25 and it's because the EE's.

https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/college-football-end-of-year-accountability-the-good-bad-and-ugly-of-2019-predictions/
"The ugly: Miami winning the ACC Coastal
The Hurricanes had as many division titles in 2019 as it had points in the Independence Bowl loss to Louisiana Tech -- zero. I didn't see that coming in August when we made our picks. I had Manny Diaz going 10-2 and winning the ACC Coastal in his first season with the program before losing to Clemson in the ACC Championship Game. Maybe they should learn how to block and find a quarterback who can complete forward passes? Just a thought."
Slurp squad defense force, activate!

Aero,
2 waste of times and a hopeful.
Most of the writers have William's joining his Cuz at Florida. I don't know how many more times he's going to visit. Came quit a bit in the Fall.
Dunston supposedly is a Texas lean.
King is who we need and we have a shot but when was the last time we had some great news these last few weeks before signing day?
Hope Rumph not taking the lead on those 2 DB's, is all I can say.
Posted by: The Herb | January 18, 2020 at 10:58 AM
I guess Saddlewood was right about the tudes, when he visited last year and made the comment the reason he didn't end up at Miami is because losing didn't seem to matter to some of the players. He didn't like the vibe. So our loss was Oaklahoma's gain.
Posted by: The Herb | January 18, 2020 at 11:08 AM
I think King is leaning towards Arkansas.

UMike,
In the beginning Arky was said to be the destination because of Briles. Going to Maryland today. I don't think he is visiting Ark. Frank's is visiting their. I think us and Maryland are the only 2 places he is going to.
This is the last week to register for classes, so his decision will have to be quick or wait until summer.

21-21 under 4 minutes to go in 1st half
canes alternately brilliant and clownish on offense
. . . very good defense, though
frosh walker finally sees quite a few minutes; brings some good energy
. . . unfortuantely he misses every basket, no matter how open
Posted by: alpine | January 18, 2020 at 01:45 PM
31-30 fsu at the half
. . . heartbreak last minute as waardenburg's dunk misses, riochets deep into fsu hands to give them an easy bucket = a 4-pt swing
. . . immediately, lykes gets a foul and, though he had made 23 straight FT's, he misses both
. . . typical of the way it's been the entire game
. . . and yet, the canes are miraculously down by only 1 to ACC leader and #9 in the nation FSU
Posted by: alpine | January 18, 2020 at 01:57 PM
If it’s just us and Maryland, we have at last a punchers chance to get D’Erique King. Maryland is active in recruiting down here, and they have the right offense. But the Canes might be the better fit
Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | January 18, 2020 at 01:58 PM
I honestly want Chase Brice from Clemson to come here. Dude Got Moxie and is very mature and from a winning culture. I would love to have King as well but I would priorize Brice. I would let 15, 18, and 5 find other destinations. And I would then have a QB room of Brice, Matocha, TVD, if we luck up with King. Then we can Ride. Just My Thoughts.
