Great work TonyCane and Soup!

It appears that the Canes have a very talented roster (from the recruiting stars perspective). Need to see that committed talent translate to winning on the field.

So Do We Finish 8-5 with this Roster 7-5 Regular Season and Bowl Win or better or worse than this scenario.

Gin & Tonic

Still makes me laugh when people blog about how we are more talented then the opponent we play.

Talent at Miami used to mean a special player. Someone who could dominate and win the game by making impact plays.

We have two such players on this roster.

One at tight end.
One at defensive end.

Simply not that good.

Beyond Basura

We have average players with a well below average coach. This last year is what you get.

I’d like anyone to come up with a single worse game-day prepping coach in any sport at any level than MD. He is absolutely trash when it come to this. However, I have to give him credit for his in-game, half time adaptability. After getting down 3 scores, he does do a nice job of halftime adjusting so that we are usually within striking distance by q4.

TheHerb

Yeah, those adjustments on offense the last 3 games were really sound.

orange 'n green in the vein

Who is more foolish? The Pimp who keeps playing the recruiting blunder from down under or the fool who pays a website to read them put instances of the shift and the 8 key combination next to names of players who can't win football games?

9-3, uh I mean 12-0, keyboard error.

We might be better than you think. Two factors give me hope.

1) The offense will get better. Last season was a nadir for a number of reasons:
a. Terrible offensive line plan
b. An offensive scheme that seemed not to take point A into account and relied on long-developing plays, turning our QB into 2003 David Carr

The offensive line had three freshmen. Just by virtue of another year in strength and conditioning, they will be better next season. The Lashlee offense will seek to mitigate any continued weakness. And King should be the best quarterback that we've had here in a LONG time

2. If kicking had been better, we win against Florida, North Carolina, and Georgia Tech. A made extra point might have given us the edge against Virginia Tech too. Whether we like it or not, there's a huge motivational difference for the team if they are 10-0 and ranked in the Top 5 and facing FIU versus 6-4. So even with all of our offensive problems, if Matt Bosher had been here we likely would have won 3 or even 4 more games.

We've likely upgraded on kicker as well, so hopefully this challenge has been solved.

No reason we can't go 12 and OH BUT until we break the curses of losing on the road and especially losing to trailer trash teams that have no business being on the field with us, we will continue to be followers in the ACC where a majority of these teams are a bunch of rollercoaster teams that range anywhere from 5-7 to 9-3, excluding Clemson of course.

Barring injuries and/or an inability to adapt the new offense...10 wins is the minimum next year.

I just hope that when there are blowouts, that Van Dyke, Perry, Matocha, or Tate (whoever is the primary backup) get significant, meaningful playtime. CMD needs to plan for next season as well.

TheHerb

That's a fact about PT because Bama is waiting with fork and spoon to start 2021.

1. The game was NOT Miami vs FIU. That game was Butch vs Manny and we know how that turned out.

King, Roche Joining Forces at The U
Jan 25, 2020

By Christy Cabrera Chirinos
HurricaneSports.com

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – More than once, they've studied each other's film.

D'Eriq King and Quincy Roche shared a conference during the first parts of their respective college careers. And that meant, given their positions, understanding what each did well.

It also meant trying to find ways to neutralize those strengths.

That wasn't exactly easy.

"He was in the game plan every single year. We tried to know where he was at all times. … Just getting away from him is a task. You have to do the best you can do," said King, a quarterback.

"He gave me one of the toughest times of anybody that I've ever had to go against. Between him being able to pass and him be able to run while still being able to throw. … he's so dynamic in the run game while still being dynamic in the pass game," countered Roche, a defensive end.

The good news for both the signal caller and the pass rusher? The only place they'll have to worry about containing each other these days is on the practice field at Miami, where they've now joined forces to play their final season of college football together.

They're plenty happy about that fact. The Hurricanes might be even happier.

Earlier this week, King and Roche – two of the nation's top graduate transfers – set the college football world abuzz when each decided to join the Miami program.

To some, their decisions might have been surprising, given the fact the Hurricanes will take the field this fall looking to bounce back from a tough 6-7 season.

But both King and Roche see the opportunity to make a difference in Coral Gables and both believe they can each have significant roles in helping second-year coach Manny Diaz get the Hurricanes back to competing for the ACC Coastal Division title.

"I kind of played in a fast, aggressive defense," said Roche, who was the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year last fall after totaling 49 tackles, 13 sacks, 19 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles at Temple. "So, [Miami] reminds me of a lot of the same things. Fast, aggressive, high-energy, that's what I'm used to. I think that will kind of make this transition smooth."

Roche's addition to the defense is expected to give an already-talented front a boost, particularly if he's lined up with another of the nation's top pass rushers, Greg Rousseau, whose 15.5 sacks last fall ranked second nationally and helped him earn ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year recognition.

While an impending quarterback competition looms this spring, King's addition, too, is big.

Though the former four-star prospect played in just four games last season before deciding to redshirt at Houston, King was an absolute force in 2018.

He completed 64 percent of his passes and threw for 2,982 yards with 36 touchdowns and just six interceptions. He ran for another 674 yards and 14 touchdowns and earned numerous honors for his play, including a spot on the American All-Conference Second Team.

During his time at Houston, King worked with multiple coaches and offensive coordinators. He gained experience in offenses similar to the one run by new Hurricanes offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee and saw Lashlee's system up close when the Cougars faced SMU.

Those are just two of the big reasons King expects he'll feel comfortable at Miami, even as the Hurricanes, as a whole, are preparing to adopt a new offensive system and he'll personally have to adjust to playing for another set of coaches.

"Coach Diaz is a great guy. That's the first thing I noticed about him. He's real genuine. He's not loud and screaming. He's just a good guy. And Coach Lashlee [who came to Miami from SMU], he was also in the same conference as me and Quincy, so I kind of knew his offense a little bit playing against him and kind of had a relationship," King said. "We just built on that relationship.

"I'm very excited. I played in an offense pretty similar to it in Houston … just coming down here, in this offense, I'm ready to go. I'm ready to work."

While both King and Roche are established playmakers at their respective positions, the two know that with their level of experience, they'll be called on to provide something more than just touchdowns and sacks.

With the departures of linebackers Shaquille Quarterman and Michael Pinckney, the Hurricanes know they are going to need veterans to step up and lead the defense. The same applies on the offensive side of the ball, which lost veteran receiver K.J. Osborn and running back DeeJay Dallas, who was widely regarded as one of Miami's heart-and-soul players last season.

King and Roche know that as redshirt seniors they'll be counted on to set examples.

Neither is shying away from that reality.

"I feel like I'm a lead-by-example type of guy, but [I can] also be vocal at times. I'm not a big 'rah-rah' guy, but I come into the building every single day to try and do as much work as possible to get better and build a relationship with the guys," King said. "I also feel that's important, just having a relationship in the locker room and everybody being on the same page, I think that can help a team win. That's what I bring."

Added Roche, "I want to come in and just mesh with the team, start building the chemistry. My leadership style is that I'm a leader by example. … I just want to exhibit the right thing so people can look at me and say, 'I want to go that way. I want to do the right thing.'"

For both King and Roche, the past few weeks have been plenty busy.

After visiting Miami and deciding to join the Hurricanes, they've had to relocate to South Florida from Houston and Philadelphia, respectively. They've gone through the process of enrolling in Miami's graduate program. They've worked to meet as many of their new teammates and coaches as possible, all while trying to get settled in their new homes.

Soon enough, they'll be diving into offseason workouts. And in the coming weeks, they'll join their new teammates on the practice field. Before long, the season will be upon them and they know they'll truly step into the spotlight and make that famed run through Miami's smoke for the first time when the Hurricanes return to action in September.

It will be a moment – and a season – they won't be taking for granted.

"There's a lot of history here, a lot of winning traditions and I was excited they even wanted me, to be honest with you," King said. "Just being here, and making the best of the year I have here. … It's a big deal. I don't take it lightly. I know the history of the program is winning, has always been winning. I'm coming here just ready to work, get to it and try to win as many games as possible."

Said Roche, "It's a big deal. This program is historic. It has a lot of history and the 'U' on the side of your helmet, that's a big deal to me. I'm just trying to make the best of it."

Lord Willing I will be at the Alabama vs Miami Game at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The Fun Time in Atlanta and Tailgating with the Canes Family is worth it for me As For The Game I have no expectations. I will treat it like I treated the Trip to Arlington against LSU Great Time minus The Game but great time nontheless.

I agree with Alpine on this one! Dejan Vasiljevic's 3 pt shooting percentage is first or second in the ACC, I think. Sure, it would be great if our head coach could recruit better players. But DV has definitely improved during his stay at UM. And right now he is a necessary part of our offense. Why wouldn't Coach L play him?

VA Cane

Kobe was one of a kind. He could be a jerk...ran around on his wife...smug...arrogant....thats him. But what a competitor.....he played angry....he had to win he hated losing!!! Thats what makes a real winner...hating losing in anything!

Shaq Quarterman this is for you...crying about being with your boys....how about smashing your helmet into a wall going off and chewing azz about losing? Learn to be a real leader not one on paper....another floating snowflake...a loser!

I wish all our players had Kobes outlook...HAVE to win HATE to lose....we might get a little better...ya think?

RIP KB.....you were a competitor a winner who had to win hated losing....perfect attitude for my kind of player!!

BigWindyCane1

I agree Nemo. DV has definitely improved. The Canes simply don’t have the talent on this team. I don’t think they have a real point guard, they have too many assists and not enough turnovers, and they lack talent in the front court.

The Canes are not a very good ACC basketball team. The Canes major problem is that they haven’t recruited consistently well, and the results are evident this season. Hopefully, they will get better and will improve next season with the development of the young players and the infusion of new recruits

VA, now you're adding SHAQ to your hall-of-dis comments?!

. . . you're a grown-ass man

. . . it's weird; and you're better than that

It about the difference between pouting and leading...wanting to win. He will need to learn that if he is to make it in the NFL...one has to hate losing in anything. He is a good player...one of our best...but needs to change that attitude.

not personal just fact. I have been coaching for 31 years I coach and teach skills and attitudes....my guys learn to hate to lose....to despise losing...you can only learn one thing from losing...try again....but you hate losing itself.

I have had 4 young men get to the NFL and another will be drafted this year....I think I taught them skills and attitudes that helped .....I suggest you do your thing and have your opinions....and I will do the same.

alpine

damn, somehow the womens bb game pissed me off

. . . i am not one of these "winning is everything" people; i really do enjoy my teams

. . . but sometimes, like tonight, i wonder when the next time will be that i get to feel what a final 4, or even a final 8, feels like

. . . or a superbowl, or even a conference playoff

. . . or be in the college playoffs; or even be in an interesting new years bowl

. . . or, . . .

every now & then, the weight of too much irrelevance of all my miami teams on particularly crummy days, (especially with politics being what they are), is like having concrete filling up parts of the heart & lungs area

please, lordy, give me a winner team and soon!

how do you know if he's a pouter and not a leader, VA?

maybe he's says the right things in the players room and provides leadership there behind the curtain, but provides support of his guys when in the public eye
. . . we'll never really know about things like this . . . that's why it's foolish to dis in these ways based off one comment or someone's tweet or what you hear on rumpelstiltsCane or whatever

That’s just ridiculous!
We lose an effing game and he says it’s more important that he hang with the boys! Almost everyone on here saw that and said the same thing - he’s part of the problem and I know that I’m happy!

AeroCane

Happy he’s gone!

VA Cane

I am not throwing down on the kid....and perhaps theres some shared blame...He played for AlPa...horrible coach...CMR good man good but burned out coach, and Manhole...a good DC horrible HC....you got to coach fundamentals execution both physically and mentally....and my first thought with my young teens and college guys is...WE HATE LOSING...its unacceptable...though apparently here at UM now it is ok....never with me. He was a good player but needed to step up in the locker room....and demand that this losing stops...it stops mentally first!!!

I work my guys really hard...and I am sure they know its for one reason ...Instill WINNING...in Life Family School...and Football...and they win...its not me..its we...WE HATE LOSING...so we do not. my young guys have lost 5 games in 11 years...we start by knowing we love to win must work harder refuse to lose...and Hate Hit Hurt on that field....its just a mindset I learned from my pop uncle and godfather..who all were NFLers from the tough 50s!

I have taught the hate of losing for 41 years(not 31 my typo)...and I know who my leaders are...I just expected more from my 4 yr MLB than just hanging with my boys...i want a helmet through the wall..and leading the cry to hate losing....maybe ya heard of Ed Reed...I'm hurt Dawg speech....thats Miami and thats what Aero and alot of us knew and expect out of this program....HS JJ DE and Butch...those guys hated losing...but watch out...its like that Chinese flu....one guy gets it leads the team....and all of a sudden everyone gets it!!! Winning is contagious...Losing is unacceptable...Thanks Aero for remembering the new UM leadership attitude!!!LOL!!

alpine

aero, Va, you guys are definitely right!

. . . shaq played in more football games than any other cane
. . . was the backbone of a good defense

. . . but the dude was not perfect
. . . so let's shiv him in the back and shove him out the door

VA Cane

All I can say is this..I was a way undersized guy who played all out in HS and college QB/DB in HS CB in college...I was too small per...well everybody...except my Dad Uncle and Godfather...they all played in the NFL...taught me all the aspects of Hate Hit Hurt...met Tatum as a yong boy as GF was Oakland DC...Tatum the all time crusher...then as I started coaching 41 going on 42 this year...I met and remember Rohan M., ER20, ST26....those guys did it all...along with many legendary Canes on O D ST....they hate losing...I almost cry...reaqlly when we lose...I hate it so bad...and it hurts as I have seen UM since 1970....when we sucked...it just hurts me so bad to think how the guys WE this family loves....we love all our kids as people...always...but since 2003 it has changed so badly...LOSING counts for nothing...but it gives yoo the chance to HATE it...and dammit try again...much harder than before...We have to stop the LOSING culture...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LG_f1GzmwHo

Put this in ya pipe....draw deeply on it let it filter into your brain...take control of your thoughts mind deeds outlook heart....then you will see what WE! This Family! This Canespace!...is all about...

VA Cane

Not shiv and shove...just calling it as I see as as a player coach....and a fan of the Old Miami!

Step up and lead and men will follow you....do nothing and others who look to you to lead will do nothing either.....Look at the above video again.....baptize yourself in the waters of leadership....and walk out those doors different...it WAS the Miami Way.....I dunno guess ya had to be there....Thank you Ed Reed for all you did leading on that field...us in the know understand your opinion of losing...We Hate It Too!!!
