It only seems fitting that it took extra innings to decide the winner of a game between the top two teams in the country.
No. 2 Florida outlasted top-ranked Miami before a sold-out crowd of 4,046 inside Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field. The Gators (6-0) defeated the Hurricanes (4-1), 2-1, in 11 innings.
"At the end of the day it's one game. We have to turn the page and be ready to go," Miami head coach Gino DiMare said. "We still have a chance to win the series. Tomorrow is the most important game of the year."
Both sides turned in impressive pitching performances, but Florida caught a break in the top of the 11th inning against Miami closer Daniel Federman.
With the game tied at 1, Austin Langworthy and pinch hitter Jordan Butler connected on consecutive one-out singles to put runners at the corner for second baseman Cory Acton. Federman struck out the Gators' cleanup hitter, but right fielder Jacob Young doubled down the third base line to snap the tie and put Florida ahead, 2-1.
Anthony Vilar led off the bottom of the inning with a four-pitch walk, but reliever Nick Pogue took over for right-hander Ben Specht and retired the heart of Miami's lineup to save the game for Florida.
Miami starter Brian Van Belle was brilliant to open the game, retiring the first seven batters of the game and allowing just one base runner while tallying seven strikeouts over the first four innings.
"My command was pretty on tonight. I felt good overall. We're all ready to get after it tomorrow," Van Belle said.
The Hurricanes face the Gators in game two tonight at 7 PM.
GO CANES!

They also use yield management, meaning they tend to defer or deny applicants they think will be more likely to not accept the acceptance and thus hurt their rankings. This is common at many schools, as UF does the same. This can backfire, as kids of alums who have ivy level applications who hope to go to the U and then get deferred tend to be more likely to reject them later while causing the families to be less likely to continue donating. Schools are all business these days. 18 year olds aren't prepared for this stuff.

Defense hurt us last game, and almost got us tonight. Canes will have to tighten up that defense this season

Big windy
What makes you think we will ‘tighten’ up the defense other than your dreams and hope? As for reality, we had a terrible defense last season and have continued this season

Before D’Eriq King, the Canes have never had a QB to put up 50 TDs in a season. Now the Canes have a productive QB on their roster, so the question is whether he will put up 50 TDs in a Canes uniform. If King does, the Canes will have a very special season and this could be a program-changing year
Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | February 23, 2020 at 12:57 PM
someone shoved that #1 ranking right up the gazooogie with a broom handle
. . . pb was prescient when he said, right after the rutgers sweep, with them sitting at #1, that it was the perfect time to . . . feel good? rejoice? celebrate? i forget the exact words
Posted by: alpine | February 23, 2020 at 04:02 PM
i'm thinkin' we need coach L to coach the baseball team
. . . but if i would think that, then i would be setting up my basketball boys to be crushed by notre dame tonite
. . . so instead, i'm just whistlin', scuffin' my shoe, thoughtless as a meditating tibetan monk

And if he doesn't some will be calling for Diaz's or Lashlee's head to roll. He's shown he could do it, so that is not in question. But let's hope Miami's coaches allow, encourage or "let him" do it again.

The sneer is gone from Casey's lip, his teeth are clenched in hate,
He pounds with cruel violence his bat upon the plate;
And now the pitcher holds the ball, and now he lets it go,
And now the air is shattered by the force of Casey's blow.
Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright,
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light;
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout,
But there is no joy in Mudville...
mighty Casey has struck out.

Broomed into bolivian, well don't that just figure. Sisters of the poor must of been taking those AB'S all weekend. The football stink of this past season has trickled down to the baseballers. Big time teams win big time games, so we ain't big time. 5 runs and what maybe 12 hits in 3 games. World series don't need to come out of Gino's mouth.

Notre Dame rolled to an 87-71 victory Sunday over Miami.
DJ Vasiljevic, Isaiah Wong and Harlond Beverly each scored 12 points for the Hurricanes (14-13, 6-11), who saw their three-game win streak snapped.
Miami never got closer than 14 points in the second half, that being at 58-44 with 13:39 to go, before the Irish surged to a commanding 80-54 advantage at 6:24 remaining.
The Hurricanes are off until heading to Georgia Tech on Saturday.

Wow
Norte Dame must be like the best team to beat us!
Cause according to Alpine, coach L is the best and can’t lose when his team is healthy. Lol

Football, basketball and baseball are all mediocre right now. Being ranked #1 was the kiss of death for baseball. Had we been #2 and UF #1 the pressure would have been on them not us. Sold out crowds couldn't even help. We can't catch a break.
