Brian Van Belle turned in another outstanding performance on the mound, posting a career-high in strikeouts to help the Canes beat Towson, 2-1.
The senior kept the Tigers off balance for seven impressive innings on Friday night, leading the Canes (6-3) to another series-opening victory before the 2,431 fans inside Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field.
"It feels good," Van Belle said of his success as the Friday night starter. "Obviously its a big role. You have to set the tone for the entire weekend, but I just want to go out there a treat it like any game. I tell myself that you have to treat every game like it's your last game."
The Miami ace continued his dominance on the mound Friday night, setting a new career-high with 14 strikeouts. The redshirt senior posted the most strikeouts by a Hurricane since Bryan Radziewski fanned 16 batters against Virginia Tech on March 23, 2013.
"Right off the bat, I just wanted to establish command on my fastball and stick to my same approach as I have every game," Van Belle said. "Obviously in the first inning that first batter probably, I don't even know how many pitches it was, but it was probably like 10 pitches, I wanted to remain efficient throughout my start and thankfully I put the team in the best position to win."
The Canes got Van Belle some run support in the bottom of the fifth, as Tony Jenkins reached on a base hit and advanced to second on a throwing error by Towson third baseman Brandon Austin. Luis Tuero doubled Jenkins home with a two-base hit to left and Jordan Lala followed with an RBI single up the middle that gave the Canes a 2-0 lead.
"It feels good to spark up the lineup," Tuero said. "Just trying to do the best I can in every opportunity I can to score some runs for our team and put us in the best position to win games."
Van Belle held Towson (2-5) to just three hits over seven shutout innings, throwing a season-high 105 pitches to earn his second win of the season. The right-hander has not allowed an earned run in any of his three starts this season. Opponents have scored just one run against Van Belle, while he has racked up 33 strikeouts and just two walks over 20 innings pitched.
"He is just the same guy," head coach Gino DiMare said. "He throws a lot of strikes. It's interesting his pitch count got up there, in the fifth inning he had 80 pitches. He has been outstanding."
Townson is in Maryland, near Baltimore:

We have 3 strong starters
Ok to good relief pitchers
Poor defense
Hitting is the variable at this time between being good vs excellent
Need toral and del Castillo as well as a few others to start tearing it up as well as getting timely hits and HR’s

I hate to sound like a broken record, but the same issues continue to plague the Canes, except this game the issues were magnified.
The Canes had only 4 assists....I repeat, 4 ASSISTS! How is that possible? No doubt, the Canes need much better movement, and maybe recruit a true point guard during the off-season. I have never seen a Coach L team struggle moving the ball on offense, struggle rebounding and struggle defending
Then, throw in 17 turnovers, and that assist-to-turnover ratio continues to look worse and worse.
Then, the Canes were out-rebounded 48-33 again, and

In any basketball game U have:
A embarrassingly high 17 turnovers
A ridiculously low 4 assists
A major disadvantaged 33-48 rebound deficit
How do U expect to win a game like that?

Canes beat Towson 8-2 but were out hit 8 to 6. Half the team hitting below .250. Maybe they need to take some dam boat oars to the plate with them.

Need to recruit and coach up players who can rebound and pass much better.

watched the basketball reply this morning while in my role as grandfather with a 1 1/2 yr. old, who sometimes watched for long minutes at a time on my lap
. . . but we took about 20 pauses to do other things
. . . so my game awareness is a little shaky
- but for the 2nd game, the 2nd part of the 1st half absolutely killed the keystone-cop kanes, who looked as frustrated & unfocussd as i've seen them during a stretch that saw GA tech clobber 'em and go up by 20
- wong & lykes were particularly frustrating to watch during the 1st half, but the ball didn't really want to go down for anyone
- and this slump vasiljevik is in is absolutely a killer . . . we were used to his timely 3-pointers and nightly 15 pts off of higher-than-40% 3-pt-avg
- waardenburg picked his game way up during the middle of the season, when injuries kept him on the court for too many minutes, despite his struggle with his leg injury . . . he stayed tough and was actually a force on offense
. . . now he seems to have lost his O-mojo and his D is not nearly as tough or effective
. . . i would have liked to see walker get some of his minutes last night
- BUT, that 24-2 run during the 2nd half was a thing of beauty
. . . i wish they could have kept it together the last couple minutes, but several foul calls that didn't seem to go their way seemed to frustrate them more than usual and their magic dissipated
- i would like to see them put it together vs VA this wednesday, with wong, lykes & mcgusty having good games and vasiljevik breaking out of his slump

Canes up 6-3 in the 6th
3-3 to start the inning so the bats woke up a little
As for basketball - move on and get a younger coach who knows the players and schemes better and can recruit JMO

The Miami Hurricanes opened spring drills at UM’s Greentree Practice Fields on Monday morning with their newcomers all around and an energy and enthusiasm of a team eager to return to work after a 6-7 season.
As soon as the media walked in from the gate adjacent to Miami’s soccer field and track, Cobb Stadium, there were the quarterbacks. They were lined up with returning redshirt junior N’Kosi Perry first, then incoming grad transfer D’Eriq King, followed by redshirt junior Tate Martell, redshirt freshman Peyton Matocha and true freshman early enrollee Tyler Van Dyke.

They threw to wide receivers, tight ends and running backs with the Hurricanes’ new crop of skill position freshmen available in the spring among them. They first threw standing still and then lined up to toss an assortment of routes to different targets with no defense.

By the time what appears to be Miami’s very early first-team offense lined up without an offensive line, it was King with receivers Michael Harley, Mark Pope and Dee Wiggins, running back Cam’Ron Harris and tight end Will Mallory. Fellow junior tight end Brevin Jordan is not available for the spring as he recovers from his foot injury.
While new offensive line coach Garin Justice was working with his unit in the distance from where reporters could watch, new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Rhett Lashlee and receivers coach Greg Likens were up close.
[Popular in Sports] Here’s why Dolphins should keep an eye on Tua-to-Redskins talk ahead of NFL draft »
Lashlee was intense instructing quarterbacks, including one moment where he yelled after an errant throw from one of his passers, emphasizing they cannot overthrow receivers while no defense is covering them in practice.
Likens got on one freshman receiver for the way he ran a route: “You did better than that in high school!”
Freshman receiver Michael Redding III, while he wasn’t expected to participate in Miami’s first spring practice based on what coach Manny Diaz said about his status nearly a month ago, was out there with a cast on his right wrist and a blue non-contact vest over his No. 83 jersey. Redding would run routes without having balls thrown to him and would simulate the ensuing catch and run.

Michael Redding III wasn’t expected to be out here based on what Manny Diaz said almost a month ago.
But even with what looks like a cast on his right wrist, he’s out here running routes and simulating catch-and-run situations without balls getting thrown to him.

Redshirt senior tight end Michael Irvin II was not seen at practice on Monday.
When a defense lined up against receivers, one highlight came from senior safety Amari Carter, who had an impressive pass breakup running with Mallory in 7-on-7.

Lashlee, with the quarterbacks, yelled at one point: “You started throwing go balls in the seventh grade! Do not overthrew them, people!”
Then, this: “Hey, quarterbacks! Every overthrown go ball is five up-downs from here on out! Give them a chance to make a play.”

Nice pickup. McLoughlin could be a nice OT for us down the road. These are the kind of players that the Canes should not allow to leave South Florida. We are finally recruiting true OTs for once.
I hope Garin Justice gives Jalen Rivers a chance to play. Frankly, I have seen enough of the current OL, and I saw Rivers at camp and once during the season, and I think Rivers can contribute. Rivers also has talent, and we need more talent on the OL.
Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | March 02, 2020 at 06:37 PM
Yeah, a good pick up and a former TE. Good redshirt candidate and let him develope into a 6'7 310 tackle by his RS Soph. Season.
Might finally be a year where we load up on some decent Oh line talent, bring in more than 2 CB's and get a high level LB or 2. When's the last time that happened?

Got a good chance with the first 3 but the last 2 going too be real tough. Collier, I believe is a FSU legacy and William's is all about the SEC, at the moment anyway. He's going to be a game player through out the process.

I also read that Justice moved players around on the offensive line to find a fit. Rivers is backing up Scaife at RG, and Zion Nelson was moved to RT. Clark is the backup at Center. Campbell and Herbert are at LT. Donaldson is injured.
This is how I see it. Donaldson will be the starting RG when he returns from injury in the Fall , which means that Scaife will likely move to another position on the OL, and my prediction is LT or RT, depending on who steps up.
