Roach,
Your wife is very perceptive. I am not a big fan of Coach L’s assistant coaches. They don’t appear to help much in-game, and they can’t recruit. Frankly, I don’t think the Canes’ staff connect with recruits like Hamilton’s staff does, and Hamilton (even going back to his MIAMI Hurricanes tenure) has always been a coach that works his players hard and stresses conditioning and toughness. Hamilton definitely develops his players, and graduates his players, and can sell that to recruits and parents.

Nemo is also right that Coach L hasn’t gotten it done.

BigWindyCane1

That said, I will remain hopeful next season that Coach L will find a way to get his players to rebound better, defend better and pass the ball better.

It’s easier said than done, but those are the three areas where the Canes have suffered all season, and it starts with recruiting and ends with coaching. The Canes don’t have enough players who want to rebound and defend, and making Lykes play point guard is like fitting a square peg in a round hole. Lykes is at his best as a scorer, not a playmaker. Others on the roster should be the playmakers, whether it’s a guard, wing or big man out of the post.

When it comes to local recruits, it should be noted that guard prospects like Gulliver Prep’s Tony Sanders and Doral Academy’s Devin Carter (both being recruited by the likes of South Carolina, Dayton, Georgia and FSU), said the Miami Hurricanes are not recruiting them.

Of course not! Laranaga is looking for a 5'6" high school prospect from Tasmania, or any "top prospect" from Archbishop Molloy H.S. in NYC, and/or another marginal transfer player from some other college or university) to come here and play basketball (on a losing team) in the ACC.

alpine

lot of anti-larranaga talk on here and no one seems to understand why i have still like him
. . . next time there's a new blog, i'll be very happy to explain why!
. . . (don't feel like posting a bunch of stuff and having it wiped out for a new blog about the baseball sweep)

alpine

but i will post this:

WINDY: "Hamilton (even going back to his MIAMI Hurricanes tenure) has always been a coach that works his players hard and stresses conditioning and toughness. . . .
Nemo is also right that Coach L hasn’t gotten it done."

ALPINE: personally, what i like about the canes is that they have a lot of fight & toughness to them . . . let's look at OT games as an example of toughness:

- canes played 4 OT games, all in the ACC: they won 3 of them including the triple-OT game AT va tech

- lost in OT vs. a deep, FSU (#1-in-ACC); remember though, it was mid-january, where we were missing several players and ran out of gas

not bad for an out-of-condition, not-very-tough team!

so you don't like the 3 frosh + transfer keith stone that he just brought into the program?

solarcane

If you really follow the blog and pay attention you can almost sense nemo doesn't have a lot of confidence in Laranaga

alpine

well, maybe i have a few points to make right now . . .

NEMO: "Yeah, early in his tenure at UM a Laranaga coached team won the ACC championship. However, he did it with a team stocked with veteran players that he inherited from the prior coach (and not mainly with his own recruits)"

ALPINE: the coach you're talking about was frank haith . . . he coached here 7 seasons and DID NOT HAVE ONE SINGLE WINNING SEASON in the ACC
. . . larranaga comes here and has a winning season in the ACC in 6 of his first 7 seasons

- also, he recruited the key ingredient to the line-up: midget shane larkin
. . . after which, 2 years after taking over the team, he led them to the championship
. . . i guess you think haith would've done that? and every other coach tom, dick & harry? cause it's such an easy thing to do?

alpine

oh, and regarding that year:

- the canes also won the 2013 ACC tourny championship becoming the first ACC school not named Duke or NC to win both the ACC regular season and tourny championships in the same season since 1974 (NC state)

. . . as my father never said: "put that in your pipe and smoke it"

alpine

NEMO: "There are only a handful of ACC coaches (like Coach L) who have held their position for nine years of more. And among these coaches Laranaga has BY FAR the lowest winning percentage against other ACC teams - only about 50 percent."

ALPINE: careful of stats
- coach hamilton (who i DO LIKE!) coached here 10 seasons, including 9 in the Big East
- his overall record was only 144-147
- his Big East record: 73-87 over 9 seasons with only 3 winning seasons
(+ 1 Big East season title)

you gonna throw him under the stats-bus too?

alpine

by the way, canes killed pit today, if you want to raise a broom on your flagpole

nemo2020

Sorry alpine, but your stats about Hamilton's record in the Big East are not now relevant, any more than Laranagna's record two decades ago at GMU.
You need to compare the respective records of Hamilton and Laranaga against other ACC teams during the last nine years. As a matter of fact, Laranagna's winning percentage during this period (slightly above 50 percent) is nothing to brag about - especially when we finished near the bottom of the ACC last year and this year too.

If you really follow the blog and pay attention you can almost sense nemo doesn't have a lot of confidence in Laranaga

Posted by: solarcane | March 08, 2020 at 03:59 PM

"Yo ho, oh no, Laranagna needs to go!"
Who says so? Yes, me, nemo.

alpine

nemo - i'll get back to you . . . but it's stupid acting like 10 years is irrelevant

alpine

p.s. the whole point of the hamilton stats was to show how irrelevant they can be
. . . hamilton was building up our program in a very good way!

. . . but over 10 years, taking all the stats together, he looks like he's doing a crap job

so, more info another time

peace

Alpine

You’re missing the point coach L; oops I mean alpine.
Haith could recruit, not coach; so because haith couldn’t do anything with these kids is not news; we needed a coach like coach L to get us to a higher level; once he maxed out after 4 or 5 years, we should of moved on; change while on top NOT at the bottom; this is the reasons our AD’s since Jankovich (rip) have pretty much sucked

BigWindyCane1

Alpine,

I am willing to give Coach L the benefit of the doubt on the last two seasons, and I don’t think Coach L or his coaching staff could actually believe that Lykes can be compared to Shane Larkin (or even Angel Rodriguez). There is really no comparison.

Larkin is a true point guard that makes his teammates better. Larkin is a true point guard in both inclination and fact — Lykes isn’t. Plain and simple. Lykes is a scorer who looks for his shot first. I have seen him play for three years, and he is what he is. That isn’t Lykes’s game. Don’t make Lykes into something he isn’t or has no desire to be, and maybe he will thrive

If Larkin or Rodriguez had played point guard for this Canes team, they would be a better team immediately

BigWindyCane1

Glad to see my Canes get a much deserved sweep against Pitt. They look good!

orange 'n green in the vein

If you want to run him you have to do it with the sidtards worst nightmare, bad publicity, to wit; https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/recap?gameId=401168546

"The Orange fell to 56-54 in the ACC in the past six seasons."

Guess The Pimp's not the only one who needs to get dismissed?

"The Orange's 14 losses are the most in the regular season Boeheim has had in his 44 years at Syracuse."

But then again, UM basketball was picked to finish ninth preseason and ended up in a three way tie for 10th so they didn't underachieve any significantly more than everyone just about expected them to wasting a floor spot on the recruiting blunder from down under this season.

Still need three wins to end the season as a winning team if there's any postseason at all . . .

I have been hearing about this recruit Savion Collins since 9th grade. LAURENCE Seymore is also the real deal. Seymore doesn’t have ideal height, but he is as nasty and strong as they come. And MacLaughlin is a true legitimate Offensive Tackle prospect with a very high ceiling.

The Canes have a really good class so far, and some phenomenal targets on our board. This could be our best recruiting class in years if we win like we are supposed to

alpine

speaking of sweeps, here's the latest vs. FSU (take it anywhere you can!) ...

CANES SWEEP SEMINOLES
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – In front of a lively home crowd, the University of Miami men's tennis team got right back to where they left off, following a two-week hiatus, securing its first top-25 victory of the 2020 spring campaign.

No. 31 Miami extended its winning streak to six matches, moving past No. 25 Florida State, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

"Great team win. It is always great to beat Florida State.," fourth-year head coach Aljosa Piric said. "This is one of the matches that we look forward to playing, because it is a big rivalry match regardless of rankings or implications. It is always going to be a tough one and our guys responded.
. . .
Overall, the win moved Miami to 3-0 in conference play for the second straight season, the first time the Hurricanes have accomplished the feat since joining the ACC prior to the 2004-05 season.

In addition, the Hurricanes have now won consecutive matches in their series with Florida State for the first time since winning five straight from 1995-2001. Sunday's sweep marked the 20th by Miami in the series history, while the Canes improved to 50-19 against the Seminoles.

The sweep also marked the eighth of the season for Miami and second in ACC play.

Miami will return to the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on Friday when the Hurricanes welcome second-ranked North Carolina to Coral Gables at 3 p.m.

Miami's win-loss record against other ACC teams this year is 7-13. Winning about 1/3 of your conference games is BELOW average. Finishing in the bottom third of the ACC is BELOW average. Consequently, . . .

OFF TOPIC

I regret to say that I have lost a LOT of money this month in the stock market. Ouch!

To set the record straight, I am NOT blaming THAT on Coach Laranaga. (Not yet anyway.)

Good luck to Pachtan at Colorado State. He definitely developed while he was here, and he is a starting-caliber DE in most programs. He deserves to play, but he isn’t going to take many snaps here
