Why sheltering in place is important

A new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed how one unsuspecting man who attended a dinner, a funeral and a birthday party in Chicago was the likely source of a chain of transmission that would lead to the infection of at least 15 people, three of whom later died.

UMike

Solar... it Was great being out on the river. Being here in Chattanooga there are some awesome places to kayake, so looking forward to it. There is a small island with a campsite I'm looking forward to. And yes my son is about to turn 22 now, time sure flies!

solarcane

Harry that`s fantastic.
Mad River canoes were high class for quality and innovation in the mid 70s forward.
I remember those aluminum Grumman canoes from Boy Scout days, it seemed like you just breathed on them and they would make a racket that would scare off any wildlife for miles around.
I remember seeing my first Mad River canoe on the Peace River, I had never seen a Kevlar canoe before but I knew that was the next big thing.

I have been a mason/ blocklayer/ tile setter/ concrete finisher since 1967, retired now, I wonder if we ever worked on any construction sites together over the years?
stay safe and God bless your grand baby.

Harry Miller

Solor, in the 70's when I was an ironworker I lived in Craig Colorado we took kayaks and canoes to the bottom of Royal George Dam. Spend the week easing down the green river fly fishing and camping. Did not Attempt doing the Gates of Lodore. I had a 1974 4 wheel drive E300 Van with a Mad River Canoe that was on top and went every where that van went for eight years. We would haul the canoe and enough camping gear sometimes up to 2 miles through the mountains a to reach a lake for a four to five day stay. We would bring one kayak. The canoe would haul a lot of gear. Like what you said, we would ease up on an deer, elk,and all kinds of wild life. Would never see anyone. Some great time and my son was always with us.

solarcane

You will get it UMike.
I wave witnessed some pee your pants moments watching people mount and dismount a kayak like its a revolving door. Trying to get in a sit in kayak from a dock is pure hell.
I wade out about knee deep, turn 90 degrees from the sit on top kayak and just sit down it is automatic after a few trips

Once you get it there isn't anything better than gliding along in stealth mode the turtles and dragon flies don`t even flinch when you cruise by.

Good luck, cool to see your little girl is already fishing. Your son must be a grown man by now, time flies. stay safe mike

Thanks VA for thinking of us. Family is doing well.
Oden still needs a continuous positive airway pressure tube to supply oxygen to his lungs through a little mask over his nose. He is starting to kick his legs around and move his arms about when not wrapped in a blanket. He made some little squeaks in the video. I get emotional watching him struggling. H is going to make it he's up to 3 lbs 14 !/2 oz. He has about eight weeks left before he can go home. I feel blessed to still be around at 77 to be able to hold him when he comes home. Can't wait to take him fishing UMike.

I was out of commission for a few weeks. Re injured my knee running down a hill last month.
An old Iron-working injury from back 78. You think I would learn by now.
Love all my Canes family and hope to see some of you when we start playing again.

Everyone here, including and especially myself, has a great deal of respect for your opinions. As we do for Big Al and his sense of humor. Speaking of humor, we could use some of that about now?

solarcane

The Miami Hurricanes are known as one of the top college programs that sends elite talent to the NFL.

On Monday, the NFL officially released its 2010s All-Decade Team and there was no shortage of former Hurricanes on the roster.

UM was represented by three former players: running back Frank Gore, defensive lineman Calais Campbell, and kick returner Devin Hester.

pb

I for one am still very hurt by this whole thing.

🙂

Much bigger and more tragic things occurring in our world these days to let a few slightly harsh words get the best of us.

Everyone’s a little grumpy these days. This too shall pass

BigWindyCane1

Three Canes on the NFL all decade team, Calais Campbell, Frank Gore and Devin Hester!

solarcane

soup rules are rules.
You did the right thing.

No politics no religion no bashing anyone's family.
That was agreed on by everyone on here over a decade ago.

I felt you could have chosen your words differently to make your point with alpine.
alpine brings a lot of information and humor to Canespace, he is a valuable blogger here in my opinion.

But at the end of the day this is your project, and you have every right to say what you want we all respect your decisions if we agree with them or not.

During that period a few years back when you relaxed the rules on everything to give people more room some folks began bashing each other day in and day out, it was so uncomfortable to be here some of us left and some of have never come back.
I checked in for a few years before I felt comfortable here again.
I love the people on this blog you included.

Everyone on here reacts to other peoples comments or opinions by what they themselves believe to be facts but no one is right all the time.
I think the trick is to respect everyone as a person first and leave them to their opinions without attacking them because you feel differently than they do...you could be wrong and they may be right, I have that happen to me here more than I like to admit.
I hope to see my pal Big Al soon.

Thanks for taking a minute to read this Tom

86Cane

I spoke to Big Al via email.

He said he will come back when he is ready.

I apologized for going off on him and explained the history of the blog, the banning process and my personal views. He was not upset about the ban but my comments, which I acknowledged were over the top and a bit too harsh. I said I was sorry.

He knows that the Canespace Fam is asking about him and when he is ready on his own terms he will return. We can all respect that.

Morning food for thought, courtesy of Allison Areff in the NYTimes. My worry, if we go the certificate route, there'll quickly be a black market or counterfeits.

In China, information design has crossed over into surveillance, requiring citizens to use software on their smartphones that dictates whether they should be quarantined or allowed to go out in the world. Each individual is assigned a QR code based on a health assessment: A red QR code confines you to two weeks of self-quarantine, a yellow one indicates one week, and a green code means that you can move around as you desire.

Germany plans to introduce coronavirus “immunity certificates” to indicate who has recovered from the virus and is ready to re-enter society. It is likely that similar ID’ing mechanisms will emerge here in the United States and elsewhere

HerbieIbis

Fields 120 long, 50 yards wide. No matter where the game is played at. In front of nobody or 100 thousand, best team wins. If we had to play in front of just a TV audience, maybe we will discover the magic of making their house or house, you know like we used to be real rude guest. Winning on the road used to be our forte.
Remember going to Norman and busting up Aikman, breaking dem hearts at Ann Arbor and beating down the Knittiny Kittys at Beaver.

UMike

What if Al doesn't know how banning works and doesn't know he can come back so hasn't checked lol... if I'm not mistaken, no one has been banned since he started posting and it was never explained to him.

Loser football team would have to pay me to watch their shitty games live in a pandemic situation due to the risk and boredom, in that order. Anyone paying for the crap last year would have been more entertained starting a bonfire with lighting the money they spent instead and you'd get less lung damage inhaling that air anyway.

Nice state VA but don't use no radar and let them catch u and don't speed. Not like GA, Flo and the up North states, they want u to enjoy your drive thru and not be in any hurry.
Definitely rural and mountainous in spots
Va, was up in those spots. Had state signs on dirt roads. Backwoods. Trailers sitting on 5 acres of land. Up there to repo trailers. Fun work but could be dangerous. I was thinking this dude all this land, what did he put a trailer on it for? Dad gave him the land and got him a trailer. All he had to do was pay 250. Bucks a month. Owed over 900 in back payments.
Some of these trailers were 15 years old and people still owed 30 grand. WTF, how is that possible, a single wide! My buddy was x cop had a nose like a blood hound, finding these things. Here's the best answer I've seen for when the economy will start up again

Essentially, economists say, there won’t be a fully functioning economy again until people are confident that they can go about their business without a high risk of catching the virus."

As long as the virus is a threat, would you go to a sporting event?

Maybe if people could scatter, but then what about the types of sports? Football, basketball and hockey are definitely contact sports, so probably too high a risk for the players. Tennis and golf could probably be played safely, maybe baseball.

Great idea on turning some of those buildings into homeless shelters,
that would be wonderful in my opinion.

What ever became of the project in Orlando I think it was, where the man turned his parking garage into a homeless shelter with the parking spots the perimeter of each persons "property"?

In my opinion as terrible as this is it will bring out the very best in more people than it will bring out the most evil.

1. Housing for the homeless is my hope and prediction. Think of college campus dorms. Those will be empty and great housing opportunities for the homeless with health centers, detox centers and job training centers all in house.

2. Mostly everyone will shop from home. Those buildings and mall will become medical centers or recreation centers or torn down to build more housing.

3. Hurricane Andrew (and many others) and 911 were disasters. This may overwhelm us more than those if it hasn't already. It has exposed several systemic weaknesses in our Country.

I wonder what all the empty brick and mortar buildings will be used for in just a little while?

With Amazon and Wal-Mart covering anything you need, and the thousands of mom and pop stores that are going to board up in a few months it seems there will be an incredible amount of retail space available cheap.

Maybe a bunch of mega air conditioned flea markets on the horizon as people try and sell there products with out a building they can afford to lease.

I thought Hurricane Andrew was a catastrophe, and 911, but I still can't believe we are experiencing this

To prevent or minimize the subsequent waves of infection, here's what will likely be needed before the economy and daily life can open up again:

“There needs to be a robust test, trace and quarantine system in place before you begin to unlock these measures,” said Thomas Hale, a professor of public policy at Oxford University who has been tracking government responses to the coronavirus around the world. “In Japan, we saw a country that thought it had it under control, but might have to go into severe lockdown now.”

No doubt Tony. From what I hear, he may be a better Oh linemen.
We need to develop what we got, which we haven't been doing. Unless we are getting some dude that has been an A-A, then we need to go young. We have 6 players that played a bunch last year. Develop them and move on. I think we need a bigger WR. Aside from Wiggins everyone else is 6'1 or shorter.
