Growing up with the Miami Hurricanes was a lot of fun.
Learning to love the rickty old Orange Bowl was fun too.
When you arrived you loved the stadium but you were never sure if you were going to survive it on any given Saturday when the Hurricanes played. It could have collapsed on any given game day. But we lived to talk about it, didn't we?
Growing the Canespace blog and our family was been just as fun. No, make that more fun! The fans, and friends and family that we have formed around here has been a glorious experience. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
Well, that was all until there were no sports events anymore.
Then the games, and the fun, suddenly and traumatically ended.
I have documented my long history with watching, rooting for and loving the Miami Hurricanes. Most here are well aware of the fact that I started going to UM games with my Dad at the OB in the early 70's and long before going to games was cool. We saw games, players and coaches that many never heard of.
There were coaches named Selmer, Curci and Saban who all got their shot.
There were players named Otis Anderson, Fred Marion, Chuck Foreman who excelled. And many, many others graced the field with their talent even as Miami lost many more games than they won.
In the 1980s I attended the University of Miami from 1981-1986. After graduating I worked on campus as a Supervisor of facilities maintenace in the academic area of campus and then Manager of facilities maintenance in the residential area of campus. These were really good times in my life.
All told I spent 10 of the best years of my life on the beautiful, tropical and vibrant UM campus in Coral Gables. It was an unbelievable time to be alive.
And I wouldn't change that for anything in the world.
Those were the best days of my life.
And I would go back again in a minute.
But that minute has passed, and what awaits us is uncertain.
Only time will tell what is going to be next.
Boom

- excellent article, soup!
- funny, even though i went to a few hurricanes games in the 60's, it was the bob griese dolphins, who captured my orange bowl heart; particularly the '72 undefeated team, which left me hoarse on many a sunday afternoon
- i "zum'med" for the canes games in '72 & '73 before leaving the area when i graduated in '74 (i forget why we called it "zum'ming"; it meant being one of those guys wandering the aisles with p'nuts, drinks, etc.)

i'll be honest, never heard of "dingleberries"
like a 21st-c. man, i jumped my compi-wikipedia and learned several meanings for those buggers:
1- mountain-cranberries (vaccinium erythrocarpum), the dingleberry, sometimes produces berries of excellent flavor, which are used locally for jellies
2- a stupid or foolish person
3- dried fecal matter adhering to anal hair

Alpine, the fins drafted bad hip Tua. 5th overall. Sigh
Posted by: CGNC | April 23, 2020 at 09:34 PM
can you imagine, though, if they didn't take him and the fins had a replay of drew brees?
like everyone, i'm worried about his injury history . . . and i would have HATED if they had traded up to get him
. . . but i'm they're taking a chance on him and my fingers are crossed that the fins-jinx will wear off one of these years and our luck will turn good again for the first time in . . . a while
(same with the canes)
tua will be VERY good if he can keep his body parts hanging together and in the right succession

NYC with a staggering 20% infection rate.
That whole city was rotten with this plague.
Makes the crazy death total more explainable.
Posted by: pb | April 23, 2020 at 09:48 PM
A few initial thoughts:
1) New York residents are on top of each other, so to speak. Subways and mass transit serve to emphasize the spread of a infectious disease
2) If the true infection rate is 20%, it means the actual death rate is far, far lower
----------------
That is becoming extremely evident. Very infectious, extremely dangerous to older and/or the immune compromised, diabetics, the obese and those with high blood pressure.
But for younger, healthier people, as deadly or less than the common flue.

Peebster,
thank God Covid is only deadly to old people. Those old farts don't deserve to live and enjoy life like 25 year olds.
That was like saying
Hey we are going to hit everyone in the United States on the knees with a sledge hammer, sure you older people will be crippled for life but you younger folks will just have a limp, so this isn't anything to worry about,
Posted by: solarcane | April 24, 2020 at 10:42 AM
Posted by: solarcane | April 24, 2020 at 10:42 AM
That's not at all what I'm saying. I haven't seen my 84 year old father, 82 year old mother and 80 year old step-mother in nearly 6 weeks. I want them safe and healthy more than anything.
What I'm saying is this data gives us a clearer picture of what we need to do going forward:
1) Continue to protect older and compromised individuals through self quarantine and proper social distancing.
2) Allow healthy people to begin returning to work in order to get our country and economy restarted in the safest way possible.

Anybody got a cure for Plantar Fasicitis? Had this crap for 6 months and a cortisone shot yesterday. Got a boot, used the ice bottle and nothing works. Had this crap 11 years ago in both heels at the same time. Eventually had the left one operated on. Instant relief.

No, but here are the natural rememdy cures that reduce inflammation such as gout, arthritis and other related afflictions:
1. Black Cherry or Tart Cherry concentrate in liquid (grocery store) and/or powder capsul form from GNC or other providers. I take both.
2. Turmeric (Curcumin) powder with black pepper (for better absorbtion) capsuls. I take one from a company called Seven Nutrition
3. Ginger
For the immune system Elderberry chews with Zinc and Vitamins C and D. Elderberry powder capsuls. Probiotics in various brands of yougurts and powder capsul form. EmergenC brand powder packets to mix with water. They have Immune System Booster one with Zinc, C & D vitamins.
Also take a good multi-Vitamin from a good source such as GNC Mega Men 50 Plus (with Selenium, Lutein and Lycopene)! I do.

http://www.med-health.net/Tart-Cherry-Juice-Benefits.html
Nutritional Facts for Tart Cherry
In addition to the anthocyanidins, tart cherries contain many other nutrients. Tart cherries are high in fiber and potassium. With no fat or sodium, tart cherries also have high amounts of vitamins C, E, A and folic acid. The amounts of beta carotene and thiamin in tart cherries are higher than found in other berries and apples. Tart cherry juice also contains high amounts of the phytonutrients that can help protect against the effects of aging, heart disease and cancer. Before increasing your intake of tart cherry juice, be sure to consult your nutritionist who can help read the labels and ensure that the form of tart cherries is right for you.
Relieve Pain
Tart cherry juice contains phenolics that can have potent anti-inflammatory effects. These substances tend to block two enzymes that produce prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are the compounds that cause inflammation and pain. Very dark cherries such as the tart cherry contain more phenolics than other cherries. Drinking tart cherry juice can act very much like pain medicines such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen. In fact, studies have shown that 400 milligrams of the anthocyanins will relieve pain as well as the well-known drug indomethacin (Indocin).
https://www.webmd.com/diet/supplement-guide-turmeric#1
Turmeric and especially its most active compound curcumin have many scientifically-proven health benefits, such as the potential to prevent heart disease, Alzheimer’s and cancer.
It’s a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant and may also help improve symptoms of depression and arthritis.
If you want to buy a turmeric/curcumin supplement, there is an excellent selection on Amazon with thousands of great customer reviews.
It’s recommended to find a product with BioPerine (the trademarked name for piperine), which is the substance that enhances curcumin absorption by 2,000%.
Without this substance, most of the curcumin just passes through your digestive tract.
Ginger does seem to help with painful periods. In one study, more than 60% of women felt that ginger lessened pain.
There's strong evidence that ginger may ease osteoarthritis pain. It may also help with:
Rheumatoid arthritis
Muscle and joint pain
Headache

Have had that conversation with my mother multiple times. She has been an avid cruiser and is still on top of her game mentally and phyically.
She told me she needs to make a decision-live her final years in fear or wait this thing out and get back to living life.
The psychological toll this thing has taken on older folks is huge and will be long lasting.

PB,
You are completely correct here.
Doing Meals on Wheels you can see the
fear and a feeling of impending doom in some elderly peoples eyes, it is heart breaking
I think of the lyrics to John Prine's Hello In There often.
I am 71 but my wife says I Wil be 15 until the day I die,I am thinking that is not a bad thing.
My best to your mom and dad pb

Anybody got a cure for Plantar Fasicitis?
Posted by: HerbieIbis | April 24, 2020 at 12:14 PM
HerbieIbis, I've been through it in both feet as well. Stretching and flexibility exercises was the "eventual" relief for me. BRUTAL pain. I tried sleeping with a foot brace sock thingy on, (similar to the boot), but it only provided "marginal" relief, as often I would wake up with the thing wrapped around my leg in the middle of the night. Those therapy straps where you can sit and pull upward on the toes also help.
My main therapy is to, three of four times a day, use a slant board that I stand on and let my heels drop and just stretch the achilles for a minute or two at a time. If I'm out with the dogs, I'll stand near a step stretching the heels down. It'll clear up for awhile, and then come back, depending on the amount of time I spend on the tennis courts. (Tennis is a non-issue right now, all public courts locked down.) Orthotics also help "some. And I found certain shoes would aggravate the situation, so I would quit wearing those.
I feel for you though, every step is agony.
Good luck.

according to the communications director of the republican governor of MD (larry hogan), more than 100 people in maryland have earnestly called the state’s emergency management hotline asking about the use of household cleaners to treat COVID-19
. . . the answer they're giving in overpopulated areas: "all household cleaners work, but only when you use a debit card** to buy these products" . . . evidently, the covid virus can now help us contain both our elderly populations and those who should probably never reach a ripe age!

So I switched to huffing Lysol Spray in a zip lock bag. As previously stated I prefer the Lavender Fragrance for maximum relaxation.
That with shots of bourbon for full throat disinfecting have worked so far so I am not changing a thing. Although if I do run out of bourbon (highly unlikely) I may switch to Vodka.

Solar and pb you are both right. But the fear in people's eyes is because they watch the never ending inundating media that shows every single death which makes it seem WORSE. The other elephant in the room is that we are a very unhealthy society (like most developed countries) with rampant diabetes and obesity. The human body was made to be dynamic and move, and people do less and less of it.
