University of Miami head men's basketball coach Jim Larrañaga announced on May 19 the signing of Elijah Olaniyi.
A transfer from Stony Brook, Olaniyi will sit out the 2020-21 campaign and then have one season of eligibility remaining.
"Elijah is a fantastic young man who brings a lot to the table, both on and off the court," Larrañaga said. "He had three excellent seasons at Stony Brook and proved that he is a tremendous scorer and a superb rebounder. He received great coaching both there and at Newark East Side, so we know he comes in with a high basketball IQ. We're excited to welcome Elijah to the Hurricane basketball family and look forward to helping him succeed."
A 6-foot-5, 205-pound guard, Olaniyi earned First Team All-America East and NABC First Team All-District accolades in 2019-20 after leading the Seawolves in points (18.0) and rebounds (6.5) per game. He added 2.1 assists and 1.6 steals in 32.6 minutes per contest, while shooting 43.5 percent from the floor, including 36.1 percent beyond the arc.
Olaniyi scored double-digit points in 25 of 28 appearances, posting 20-plus on 15 occasions, including five times in a row, and twice logged at least 30. He notched 25 points at Providence and recorded five double-doubles on the season, four of which came in consecutive contests.
A third team all-league honoree as a sophomore after averaging 12.3 points and 5.9 rebounds per game, Olaniyi also earned America East Rookie of the Year accolades as a freshman.
Over his final two years at Stony Brook, Olaniyi led the team to a combined 44-22 record, including a 22-10 mark in conference play. He recorded 46 double-digit scoring performances in 59 outings, 56 of which were starts, over those two campaigns.
Olaniyi, who received interest from programs such as Arkansas, Minnesota, Nevada and Xavier before deciding on Miami, tallied 1,135 points in his three years with the Seawolves, good for 12.5 per game.
A 2015 state champion at Newark East Side (N.J.) High School, Olaniyi played AAU basketball for the New Jersey Roadrunners, the same program that produced players such as Kyrie Irving, Al Harrington and Randy Foye, the latter of whom also attended East Side.
Olaniyi is the third incoming recruit for the Hurricanes, joining a pair of high school standouts in guard Earl Timberlake and forward Matt Cross. The four-star prospects place No. 33 and No. 81, respectively, in the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Looks like j williams is getting close to a decision
Huge for us if we can get him; immediate upgrade for 1 season at left tackle thereby helping king and the offense; it also gives Isaiah walker a year to get ready; let’s hope.

Soup,
Saw where u asked about our other needs for the football team.
QB, unless we flip Milroe, who is committed to Texas, it will have to be a late bloomer or portal.
CB. Currently we have or will have 6. Numbers are to low. We have a couple committed but Curtis really hasn't played much corner. We need to bring in 3 to 4.
RB. We need to bring in 2 but unless it's the right guy, one will have to do.
Safety one or 2. They want Kinchens and we should get him.
OH Line, pretty close to being done. If another tackle wants in like Tristen Leigh from Virginia or JC Lathem they'll take 5.
DL looking for probably 2 DE's and and at least 2 DT's. Everywhere I've read they keep saying Collins is going to flip to Florida. Been saying that for 3 months, so I don't know what he's waiting on. Want Leonard Taylor and it would take a miracle at this point but if we could swing Collins and Taylor look out for the future.
LB. No big timers, all 3 stars as of right now.
William's is a kid they want but where does he end up playing. 6'5 and 210 safety right now.
Terrel Lewis and Javion Hood are verballed else where.
WR, we have none but plenty available. Probably looking to take 3. George, Alexis, Brinson, Yulkeith Brown and a kid from Lousiana Malik Nabors who is a 4 star are the main guys they are after.
Jason Marshall is a 5 star DB, that doesn't show much interest and Jacory Brooke's is a 5 star WR that verbed to Bama. Lot of talent that as it looks now we are going to miss out on. A lot of Cruits have said they want to see how they perform. Up to that offense. The defense should be righteous. That about sums it up for now. Kids are committing early. Probably will be a ton of Decoms later. We have to win and put effing points on the board.

ESPN is airing the Miami vs Ohio state Fiesta Bowl game at 8. Like anyone would care, especially if you are a Miami fan. It should be called the “Miami got fucked” bowl game.

Yes... Agree 100%... Winning... and winning BIG, will solve most of our recruiting woes!

I told VA what you said, and he said thank you very much for the thoughts. He said he had checked out and felt it would not be right to ever go back; he has very deep principles.
He did say please tell all the blog he has great admiration and respect for everyone on here, and he loves each like family....and families sometimes disagree.
Best to all of you from me and VA.....he talks so highly of each of you....sounds like great bunch of people....like family. Sorry the blog is ending; my VA loved it and read it everyday for as long as I can remember!
Blessings and Godspeed from the VA family...goodbye now!

Herb you hit it right on with your football comments. All we have to do is and they will come.
Only a basketball fan if the canes are playing and appreciate the recruiting information. Would love to see them do really well.

Left out ( win ) the most important part.
I was in the end zone at that Ohio game and watched that sorry as ref pull out the flag way after the play was over. The Bastard stole it from us.

I thought VA posted something about music and you told him ‘it’s not a music blog’
Is that what’s got him upset? Jeez! VA, get over it (if that was it) and come back!

Hope so. I'm generally against robbing the future for the present, but in this case the upside is really strong. A 11-1 season will go a long way to solidifying our recruiting for 2021 and be a springboard for the future. Talent-wise, we're closer than we've been in a decade.

Otherwise, possibly starting over with a new coach.

We need to be at least in the early 50's with that count. Only winning and putting pts. Up will solve that.
Half and half should guarantee us 9 to 10 wins. Up grading the oh line talent is a must. We need an elite LB. We need to keep DT talent stocked and consistently have an above average QB.
To get up there with Bama, OSU , Clemson and LSU we need to get to 50 to 55.
Clemson is close to that. It's been a steady climb but what has got them over the hump is great QB play.

Yeah, that was it. Then he went nuclear for no good reason making wild claims but hey I forgave him because we ALL have our moments including me.
So this on going nonsense is just another reason to let the blog go. The technology is outdated and the majority of people who are worth it is about 20-30. Is that worth the time and effort?
Posted by: 86Cane | May 29, 2020 at 10:41 PM
Gotcha! Yes, to those 20 or so including myself, it is worth it and we appreciate you very much!

Henry gray 4 star DB who just enrolled at Nebraska is in the portal already citing family reasons - he was once committed to the U
Posted by: AeroCane | May 30, 2020 at 10:57 AM
I think someone on here stated this before but I think with everything going on, more recruits and their parents will want to stay closer to home

Posted by: AeroCane | May 30, 2020 at 11:00 AM
That was me Aero but that doesn't look like it will hold true, especially the 3 five star players in the area. Maybe if things don't get better sooner than later, we can revisit that option.
How about us winning and putting up points then maybe they rethink their options.
What I also said was, these zeroes might figure out, that staying at home and playing in the low level ACC, it will be easier to reach the final 4 than playing in the SEC. We basically just have to navigate Clemson at the present time and UNC who is coming.

Yes!
Disclaimer - I still have major doubts with manny and Blake Baker!
Posted by: AeroCane | May 30, 2020 at 12:42 PM
Outdated technology or not, I still prefer THIS version of Canespace.
Yeah Aero. If Manny D, and Blake J can't pull it off THIS year, they need to start looking for jobs at Temple. (ESPECIALLY B. James!)
I'm feeling pretty good about this season at THIS point though!😉🙌🏼
Posted by: roachcane77 | May 30, 2020 at 05:02 PM
Roach me too! I want to be so excited but in the back of me mind, I see the miserable losses we took to end the year and more importantly that manny didn’t step up! However, We should all be excited this time of year
PS nice article on ‘inside the u’ about 3 star guys who outplayed their star ranking

I know it's STILL May... but I can't help but wonder what the College Football season will end up looking like this year...
I HOPE (🤞🏼), we get to play our full schedule, and they are ALL televised, (with or without "on location" fans.)
Too many people are thinking this Covid thing is over... they are very wrong.
Let's Go CANES!🙌🏼

Got a good feeling 3 months out. This covid crap is stalling our MO. Slam course will have to do for the offense. Learn on the fly. Guys who were supposed to be's need to step up, especially Pope. He was supposed to be all that and a box of chocolates and has played like melted chocolate.
Posted by: HerbieIbis | May 30, 2020 at 09:28 PM
I’m sure hoping Pope has a huge breakout year! We need to show that offense is fun, we can score points and of course win
Then some of these guys will stay home!!
On a side note: 2 4 star DB’s from south Florida both spurned us and went to Nebraska! Yes, Nebraska! Their dB coach and recruiter is a guy named T fisher - maybe we should try to get him on board! (I know gray has already entered the portal, but the point is still the same)

If this is indeed the very last day of the blog, I want to say goodbye to all of you who made this site great.
Tnank you 86/Soup/Tom for your time, effort, knowledge, humour and common sense to keep this thing affloat and interesting for so many years.
I wish it would go on, but having run a sports fan site myself (which I gladly handed over to the next guy after 12 years), I can see all the reasons why Soup came to the point where he decided to let it go.
I'm a avid non-user of FB / Twiter /Insta & Co., so this is it for me. I'll be missing this site and the great people who made me think, made me wiser or made me laugh out loud. To all those who mostly brought hate and bitterness: It's never too late to get a life.
Love & peace & stay save everybody - greetings from Germany!
