What’s up with CB Tyrique?

Old Skool

Patke = Mediocritke

AeroCane

Old Skool
Sorry but wrong
Him and baker are way less than mediocritke

The bigger problem is manny not firing them!

The Herb

Morgan was a destroyer. Now that is the kind of LBer I'm talking about that we need but don't have or have had in years.
Imagine having him and Lewis at LB.
So when they talk how excited they are about all these 3 stars they keep bring in, it's like trying to insult my intelligence. If u are so excited, then develop them into a Morgan or a Lewis or close to those guys. I see no consistency at LBer. Shaq and Pinkney were good but not great or consistent.
Use to be DT was our albetros, now it's LBer and CB we just don't recruit the position hard. U can tell by our numbers
We just played the season with 5 CB's, 2 which were true freshmen. Like I have been saying what does Patke and Baker bring to the table?

roachcane77

Awesome blog! Morgan was indeed a BEAST. A very LARGE human being. Met him in the lobby of the Sugar Bowl, (whatever year that was... ), and he was very gracious and friendly. He even let my then, "high school" daughter, videotape him for a welcome message to air on our High School news show.
Too bad about all of the concussions he went through in the pros. Seems to be doing pretty well with The Bills now though! Good for him!

Yes, we need to recruit MANY MORE players like Dan Morgan, for sure!
🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

The Herb

Some coaches and players u just can't get rid of, McCloud coming back.

AeroCane

Herb
I heard
Terrible news - manny is a gutless pos. Doesn’t fire rumph / he ‘moves him’; doesn’t fire baker - he just dilutes his already terrible HC skills by calling plays; and he doesn’t fire the worst STC in the country in patke;
He could very easily of told mccloud to enter the portal as we are moving in a different direction but no, he will stay and be talked about and we will be told he’s improved and a great leader and he will take plays from younger and better players and he will still have no clue what’s going on and always be a step or more behind the play!

AfriCane

Herb, i for one think he’s made some good moves. The only thing is, let’s see if works. If jimbo can call O play as an head coach, then let’s see.
I don’t know y Zach is back. My guess is, he received an unstaffed free agent grade from the league and so manny is trying to help him compile a better film? All I got to say is, he better not be starting. We need to play more of the skilled young guys and get them developed. And if u don’t play them, they might get in the portal, pissed for not getting playing time over a suck-ass senior. He’s not going to do anything as a pass rusher either, what is he going to be, 5th in rotation?
My guess for them not bringing in a new DC is money. They spent money for trench coaches and DB coach. They figure they can get Blake to coach LBs. after all, LB problem is not the skill or teaching, it’s the position they r put in by play calling during a game, as long as u don’t play McCloud. So I’m thinking manny hopes to fix that by calling the plays by himself.
We balled out when manny called plays. He’s not going to be distracted from HC duties because BB is going to prep game plan during the week.
LW&S!!

AfriCane

****undrafted
Fucking auto crap!

The Herb

Like the Simpson hire and TRob hire. Van Dyke can recruit but he will basically be learning on the job.
Ty Stevenson to Da U. Now we are steppin.
Got no problem with Manny calling plays but it's now his azz swinging in the breeze, not Bakers.
William's coming back as well. Only Targeting hadn't announced yet.
Really got no excuses but unless we get the LB situation taken care of, we will again have problems against the run. To many slow reacting, no gap filling or tackling dudes manning that position.

AeroCane

T-Rob paying dividends - Tyrique is coming to the U!
Also jarrin williams is coming back.
All great news
(Too bad about mccloud though)

finally was able to watch the replay a while ago:
- after the first couple minutes, i was thinking, "do i really want to put myself thru another "boston college" experience??!!
- but then the canes started really stepping up:
. . . nysier brooks was FANTASTIC, harlond beverly did great work, both olaniji & cross were very good . . . and yes wong was outta dis wold!!!!!!
- i am still disappointed in anthony walker, who seems fantastically athletic, but comes across to me as "whirling dervish" energy, and lacks the discipline & focus that wong & beverly have . . . really need him to make a big step, with us being down soooooo many players
- also, deng gak just seems sooo fragile; could call him "stick man"; no way he'll ever be able to play major minutes
. . . but it's fantastic, that larranaga managed to pull in senior transfer nysier brooks, cause that dude has meat on the bone and hunger in his spirit and he makes us a force in the paint; particularly with rebounding
- tip o the cap to larranaga for coaching his broken team to this win over excellent louisville
- p.s. it's fun to finally watch the OTHER team be on the horrible end of 3-pt shooting!!
- p.p.s. i'm already wondering which bb players will return, instead of going pro; i'd really love to watch a healthy(ish) canes team play; i bet they'd be up near or at the top of the ACC THIS year, if healthy, but i'm worried about the traditional siren song of the NBA

"Morgan should be in as a lock, he'll have the toughest time getting the votes though.
Commented Jun 18, 2020 on Respect Is Alive And Well"

I was wrong. The electors did the right thing and I commend them for their intelligence. Dorsey, Barrow and Louis now can get their recognition, not necessarily in that order, and not limited to just those three either.

AfriCane

I don’t get the narrative of ppl saying CMD ass is on the line because he will be calling the plays. That’s what he dis before he was moved up to HC, very recently too I might add.
I do agree that the only game he’s really allowed to loose next year is the bama game. Yes he can loose 2 more, but he can also win those too.
If he brought in a DC as good as he is, it would be considered a home run hire. And if he craps the bed with a DC calling the D plays, I still think he would be in trouble. So he’s fate is really tied to how we do next year, not who’s calling the D plays, as long as that person is good.
IJS!!!!

The Herb

Azz in the breeze because he is taking the heat off that useless Baker. He can't recruit and he's coaching LBers who are average to below average. How about bringing in some kids who can actually play the position.

AfriCane

LOL!
Was just on the Georgia Bull dogs 247 site.

Tbf, the " U" cowrote the book on modern day recruiting warfare and crookedness with FSU. They only became relevant bc of this. Not saying this is why Stevenson bolted, but it be naive to dismiss this being a possibility. Thought it was funny when some years back they were supposedly going to be an academic school led by I believe one of the Clinton administration's sharpest minds. It was always just a matter of time. The media is begging for them to rearrive, the NCAA is not paying attention, and it has been a handful of years since the death penalty was hanging over their heads. Like FSU, the school is irrelevant without football.

TonyCane

If the NCAA were to go after Miami after all of the illicit recruiting at Alabama for years (players posting pictures with wads of cash on NSD, leasing of cars to players, etc) I think I would be done with college football.

As for roster levels, we’re now well above the 85 man limit. It’s the first time we’ve even had 85 scholarship players in a number of years. Our blue chip ratio has also jumped above 50% as well.

VA Cane

Nice thought, but 1 they need to be coached, 2 they need to execute on the field. Despite all the ways of measuring recruits, I care about what they DO ON THE FIELD.....and I do not see it....ez to beat little guys...but Clemson UNC and OSU show me when its time to coach and time to shut up and put up.....it aint happening......all for naught if ya ask me!!!

We're in a far, far better state in 2021 than we were, let's say in 2012.

Let's just compare QBs, TEs, WRs, and HBs:

QUARTERBACKS:
2012 (4): Stephen Morris (3 star), David Thompson (3 star), Gray Crow (3 star), Preston Dewey (3 star)

2021 (5): D'Eriq King (4 star), Tyler Van Dyke *(4 star), Jake Garvia (4 star), Tate Martell (4 star), Peyton Matocha (3 star)

WIDE RECEIVER:
2012 (10): Davon Johnson (4 star), Malcolm Lewis (4 star), Kendall Thompkins (3 star), Laron Byrd (3 star), Allen Hurns (3 star), Phillip Dorsett (3 star), Rashawn Scott (3 star), D'Mauri Jones (3 star), Herb Waters (3 star), Jontavious Carter (3 star), Robert Lockhart (3 star)

2021: (14): Mike Harley (4 star), Mark Pope (4 star), Daquris Wiggins (4 star), Jeremiah Payton (4 star), Keyshawn Smith (4 star), Michael Redding (4 star), Jacolby George (4 star), Brashard Smith (4 star), Romello Brinson (4 star), Xavier Restrepo (3 star), Dazalin Worsham (3 star), Malik Curtis (3 star), Marshall Few (unranked)

TIGHT ENDS
2012 (4): Clive Walford (3 star), Asante Cleveland (3 star), Cory White (3 star), Jake O'Donnell (3 star)

2021 (5): Will Mallory (4 star), Elijah Arroyo (4 star), Larry Hodges (3 star), Dominic Mammarelli (3 star), Khalil Brantley (3 star)

RUNNING BACKS:
2012 (4): Duke Johnson (5 star), Eduardo Clements (4 star), Maurice Hagens (3 star), Danny Dillard (3 star)

2021 (6): Cam'Ron Harris (4 star), Don Chaney (4 star), Jaylan Knighton (4 star), Thaddius Franklin (4 star), Robert Burns (3 star), Michael Parrott (unraked)

Then, let's have a look at the overall roster:

Five Star Players:
2012: 5
2021: 2

Four Star Players:
2012: 17
2021: 48 (more on this below)

Three Star Players:
2012: 51
2021: 41

Two Star Players:
2012: 4
2021: None

Unranked:
2012: 6
2021: 3 (walkons converted to scholarships)

TOTAL BLUE CHIP PLAYERS
Whatever the criticisms on coaching, Diaz is proving to be the head of the best recruiting regime since Butch Davis left town. He's making expert use of the Transfer Portal. An example is the 2019 Signing Class. After Early Signing Day, we had seven spots left. In the past, we would have taken fliers on three and two star players to fill out the class and hoped that a few would develop. Instead, we went after high risk/high reward transfers that in a number of cases had multiple years of eligibility left. We've also stopped signing players who won't qualify, and the number of players who are leaving after one or two years is falling drastically from the Shannon and Golden years.

TOTAL BLUE CHIPS ON ROSTER
2007: 41 (53% blue chip ratio)
2008: 41 (48% blue chip ratio)
2009: 38 (53% blue chip ratio)
2010: 39 (46% blue chip ratio)
2011: 30 (38% blue chip ratio)
2012: 21 (26% blue chip ratio)
2013: 25 (34% blue chip ratio)
2014: 25 (33% blue chip ratio)
2015: 27 (33% blue chip ratio)
2016: 26 (34% blue chip ratio)
2017: 27 (35% blue chip ratio)
2018: 34 (42% blue chip ratio)
2019: 35 (45% blue chip ratio)
2020: 39 (50% blue chip ratio)
2021: 51 (54% blue chip ratio)

Talent alone will not win games, but it will get exponentially easier if we can maintain roster strength akin to what we now appear to have. Certain positions are still weak (LB and CB), but OL has been fortified and is going to be light years ahead of where it was two years ago. Our quarterback room is the strongest that it has been since 1999.

I personally think that the absolute floor (barring injury) is 9-3, and that 10-2 is the most likely outcome (losses to Alabama and UNC)

2012: 82

Like I say....I could care less about blue chips and stats...Tony you are the best....but when you consistently are not competing for titles...and you know it...we have not been close in 17 years....Until you get the real talented players...who want to die rather than lose and a coaching staff that understands the game fundamentals accountability and how to make good players great...you aint JACK! 8-3 might be good for Tulsa Indiana Minnesota....I look at reality...we beat nobody that was a really good team....and got drilled by 3 good teams...all that scholly and blue chip talk is nice for some....I have to win...there is no option...and if you are not winning on a national level...you just another also ran....Just Win Baby....Win Titles....Wanting to Win and doing it is ALL THAT MATTERS!

The Word From The Herb

At least we didn't lose to teams we weren't supposed to lose to as usual but when we had a chance to play up to or above our capabilities we fell flat on our mugs.
So the final analysis is, we struggle against the nobodies and plain suck against the somebodies. Same ole story that has played out for close to 20 years.
The whole problem is consistency in every aspect of the program. We get one whole fixed, another springs up and so it goes.
Manny has at least tried to fix the leaks but game day preparedness is still lacking and holding players accountable is also lacking. In other words, Manny needs to become a total azz hole, when it calls for him to be one. Personally, I don't believe he has it in him. He to much wants to be a players coach and caudle the players.
Wiggins and Pope are 2 prime examples of what caudling looks like. U keep effing up, will pat u on the back and send u right back out there. I know the dudes ain't dropping passes on purpose but either u can or u can't and they dam sho can't. I could also say the same for those hapless LBers.
He picked his poison, so he better have that dee right.

Now that they fixed that HOF problem I can get back to complaining about Dorsey being screwed over by the voters instead, it's already bad enough Crouch stole his Heisman trophy from him, the HOF letting that trash player in first before an actual college champion QB was enshrined is literally the worst decision they've made the last decade of these things anyway!

TonyCane

I don’t disagree with you VA. But I would rather Manny or whoever is coach have 50 blue chip players to work with rather than levels in the 20s as we were during much of the previous decade. Nick Saban was not taking the 2017 Canes to a NC...I don’t care if he had a thousand analysts. We need better talent.

VA Cane

I agree....TC....we have got to get better talent at skill positions...and me as a 41 year coach who has done some winning, think all positions are now skill positions......All the OL DL...backers DBs...backs and WEs...QB got to matter. You have to have a great QB....KD11 was very good because he was very smart and a leader...a winner...not the greatest talent..but had incredible talent around him he led!!!

You have to have a QB...a great TE and a game breaker WR....and a steady strong disciplined OL. You have to have strong corners....and steady DTs
...got to have big time pass rushers...there are positions that can be good...but some got to be great. I will argue til doomsday with anyone...anyone...that 2000-2003 UM teams were loaded with greats at every position.....and is the greatest talent greatest team ever....we will never have that again....but we can shoot for it. I agree TC...we need the blue chippers....but they got to want it bad...want to get better....and they have to be coachable....and we REALLY need upgrades on the staff!!!!

I agree OGV....while KD11 had great talent around him....he had to be smart...he was and is...and he had to be the leader...thats why they were so good...his leadership and intelligence...we wont see that eras team ever again.......Crouch was writers choice just because of NE being NE and Osborne being involved with the school....KD11 was one of my favs.....great player!!!

Can you do a similar analysis of Coach L's basketball recruits during his tenure at UM?
How do we compare to other teams in the ACC - most notably FSU?
Thanks!

There U go again Nemo! Larranaga must see U in his nightmares?

I hope so! I'm damn tired hearing about how good a player he was on his high school team 60 (?) years ago, his college team 50 (?) years ago, and the success he had a few decades ago as the head coach at GMU. All I'm hearing and seeing these day is a mediocre basketball program at UM that doesn't compete at a high level in the ACC.

P.S. Note my new blog name. Don't worry. It's temporary. Much like Larrañaga's one-game winning streaks this season against ACC opponents.

The Herb

Jeremy Pruitt fired for recruiting violations. Of course he denies any wrong doing or has no knowledge of wrong doing. Just like prison, they are all innocent.

So, just so I know where the expectations are set, exactly where should UM basketball be in the ACC for you to decide it's not the coaching that's the problem with the program?

Because they're not obviously underachieving playing for the current regime and have been stuck on seven scholarship players for a few years due to injuries, which pandemic conditions aren't going to help alleviate at all? (The Pimp's old time story hour is the most annoying thing about the program right now though, on that I agree even when I like the story he's busy telling, he should spend more time talking about what he wants and expects from his current roster than talking about a time he faced a coach decades ago in a smaller league, but he's in the upper echelon of career wins so what good is it getting there if you don't get to throw a tale out from the journey now and then too?)

The Herb

U can't make this stuff up:
Tenn. coaches were handing MacDonalds bags out to recruits with cash in them.
Dan Patrick was told this story by a source. The source also said Georgia was doing the same thing but nobody has heard anything yet about them.
