The University of Miami football program was mired in mediocrity for the longest time. Previous coaches names Tate, Curci, Elliott, Selmer and Saban tried to make it work but couldn't get it done.
And then, all of a sudden, it happened.
Along came a coach with a really long last name that was really hard to spell.
That name was Schnellenberger.
That name changed everything that has to do with University of Miami football.
That name changed my life. And most likely yours too if you are reading this.
He coached guys named Kelly, Kosar and Testaverde who made Miami QB U.
Most importantly, he brought us our first National Championship in 1983.
To Schnellenberger we owe our history, our fandom and our incredible success.
There is only one first time. In any thing, at any time. Howard was that guy.
Howard Schellenerger gave us a dream that lives on and that's all because of that pipe smoking, tie wearing, bear of a man.
And for that we will forever and eternally be grateful.
Thanks Howard and rest in peace.
7-1 win and the sweep

KYCane - you’re welcome
I hope others like to be kept up with the team as well

Aero,
That would be playing for a big inning. Nothing wrong with that early in the game. Now, Morris would have squeezed the run in. That fool loved to bunt.
Late in the game and if it's close, I'd squeeze the run in, especially if the team has sucked all day hitting.
Posted by: The Herb | April 04, 2021 at 07:50 PM
Herb I wasn’t talking about bunting - I was talking about a deep fly, something hit to the right side - just being smart - I’ve seen us strike out way too many times this year in these situations - every run counts! I understand that a K will happen every now and then, but I just feel Gino doesn’t teach fundamentals strongly enough (including fielding)
PS Morris drove me crazy with his inning killing bunts etc - playing for 1 run rather than hitting away.

Tony, I believe it was NC State and it was either one or none, with 3 ints.

All he needs is to hang around a few years, get promoted to staff and beat out Odell Haggins as interim coach to complete the big three in the state of speed head coach hat trick . . .

Nice post Tony....honestly....I dont think Wright was a 5....nor do I think any of these guys were 4s....there is not a four on there. While HS numbers clippings reputations etc are one thing, they do not always pan out in college ball. Look at that list....not many what I call good QBs in there. On the flip side, maybe had we had a good OL good backs, good WRs good D good ST...and coaches coaching all aspects...the QB play would have been better. To win at this game...at any level....you need good players in all areas....and a few greats. 5 NCs tell me so....and had we been a little more focused and disciplined...and at times not in the crosshairs of the NCAA and the refs....mighta had more!!
Posted by: VA Cane | April 05, 2021 at 03:59 PM
Baylor tough hoop team....very strong well coached....gotta feel for Zaga.....hard to believe 45 years since coach Knights Hoosiers went undefeated in 76....last team to do so....this was a good tournament...lot of upsets...one thing though....get the hell rid of that damn One Shining Moment......sappy sappy....syrup....just give the trophy.....and let the kids party....they have earned it....I do not like sappy endings win lose or draw...thats too much for me..

I’m glad I’m not wasting my time (or too much of it) on this crappy baseball team
Lost 6-4 today
Pitt going for the sweep of our ‘mighty’ canes tomorrow
Posted by: AeroCane | April 10, 2021 at 06:52 PM
Win 5 or 6 in a row lose 3 or 4 in a row. We ain't got no dam business losing to any northern team. Freaking into 3 or 4 DP's.
Our starting pitchers are marginal at best. Aside from relievers, do we have anyone with a sub 4 era?

Not good baseball - from coaching to the players
Posted by: AeroCane | April 10, 2021 at 11:09 PM
No bueno!
Posted by: 86Cane | April 11, 2021 at 04:35 PM
Got swept by the mighty baseball Pitt panthers! Not even competitive as dimare has no clue how to manage a pitching staff and we gave up 7 in the 6th!
A bad coached team! The talent is there I just feel dimare doesn’t know how to practice, train and prep these guys!
But that’s what we get with Blake James as our AD!
Posted by: AeroCane | April 11, 2021 at 04:59 PM
U can blame Gino all u want but the fact is he can't pitch for them, he can't hit for them and he can't field for them.
We get based loaded, with less than 2 outs we either strike out or hit into a double play. We don't make a play in the field, next guy up hits a grand slam and our starting pitching stinks. Hell he's used about every pitcher he has and there is no consistency, hitting or pitching.
Posted by: The Word From The Herb | April 12, 2021 at 10:28 AM
I’ll disagree Herb!
You don’t know how he’s practicing with them, training them, teaching them etc; there’s so much behind the scenes that we don’t know about
I’ll bet you if you took Sullivan from UF he’d do more with our team than Gino does;

Posted by: 86Cane | April 12, 2021 at 12:22 PM
Aero,
He knows how to coach but he is no small ball coach, like Morris. It would be good to be a little bit that way. He plays for the big in inning and right now the big inning is happening for the other team. How many grand Salamis did Pitt hit?.
Posted by: HerbieIbis | April 12, 2021 at 05:44 PM
Minnesota is one effed up state.
Don't want anyone getting killed but it's getting to the point where someone gets capped the whole world stops. The show has always gone on, no matter what but now no matter who it is, shut everything down.
Posted by: HerbieIbis | April 12, 2021 at 05:48 PM
Herb, I’ll still disagree
I hate that small ball crap that Morris played. I am NOT saying small ball or long ball - I’m saying play freaking intelligent, situational baseball. Ie men on 2nd and third and no outs / you do NOT do a freaking suicide bunt, but you also don’t effing strike out either (it’s gonna happen but it shouldn’t be the norm); You hit a single to the right side, you hit a sac fly to the right side, etc
Dimare is not teaching fundamentals, not practicing them correctly etc
He’s had No head coaching experience and should never have been named head coach but it is what it is. I’m done arguing about this with you - I’m right, you’re right, who really cares cause it won’t get dimare fired or make him a better coach.

From inside the U (free article)
The position changes for defensive returners Amari Carter and Keontra Smith in the spring have been subtle, but the moves could prove to be valuable.
Carter, who started nine of the team’s 11 games at safety last season, has been working at striker in the spring, which concludes on Saturday (11:00 a.m., ACCN) with the annual spring game to be held at Hard Rock Stadium.
“I think Amari with his versatility in terms of—we have a lot of versatile guys in our back seven, a lot of experienced guys so be able to put Amari closer to the ball, there’s some skill sets that he has," head coach Manny Diaz said.
"Frierson can do some things, Frierson has a lot of skill in that position," Diaz said. "Amari has a little different skill set that can make you call some different things."
The process of moving Carter positions likely stems from his occasional struggles in space and coverage at the safety position, while taking advantage of his strengths of a strong tackler on contact, which is needed from a striker who typically lines up close to the line of scrimmage, or at the least, much closer than a safety on a typical play.
It also indicates confidence from the coaching staff in the safety position with Bubba Bolden, an All-ACC second team pick in 2020 and the team's leading tackler, and Gurvan Hall, a full-time starter in 2019 with four starts in 2020, also returning in addition to the impression second-year freshman Avantae Williams is making in his first spring. Five-star recruit James Williams is also slated to join the team in the summer.
Smith, who has been primarily playing striker since he arrived in 2019, was moved to weakside linebacker.
“I think Keontra at Will—he’s looked at home there,” Diaz said. “He actually played that position at Chaminade quite a lot. He’s very comfortable closer to the ball.”
Frierson has been impressed with the seamless transition both appeared to have made.
"A bunch of speed, guys that can move and understand the defense, understand the game," Frierson said. "Both of them are older guys that have been able to move around and learn the position with a little bit of time, has been amazing with how far they have gotten."
Second-year freshman Jalen Harrell also switched positions in the spring, from safety to cornerback.
"I think when we get all of our guys back in the fall, I think some of our versatility and different looks we can provide to an offense will be more diverse because of guys that can play different positions—not to mention our sub-packages with nickel and dime," Diaz said.
Diaz noted that linebacker Sam Brooks (toe), Bolden (toe), safety Brian Balom (neck), and cornerbacks Al Blades Jr. (stress fracture) and Te'Cory Couch (neck) will be held out of Saturday's spring game among players in the back seven.
