We Ready, We Ready!

There were moments, rare though they may have been, when D’Eriq King couldn’t help but wonder if he’d really, truly be ready for the start of Miami’s new season.

When the MRI revealed he’d torn his ACL in late December. When he was unable to walk after surgery. When he relied on crutches to help him move. When doctors and physical therapists told him it wasn’t time for him to run just yet.

But anytime the questions and doubt crept in, King did his best to refocus.

He’d gather his thoughts, put his head down and find a way to hit the next benchmark in his rehabilitation process. Now, less than eight months removed from a knee injury that left him devastated, the quarterback is ready to get back on Greentree.

He’ll have his opportunity Friday evening when the Hurricanes finally open preseason camp.

“I’ve been working my butt off all summer. I didn’t really have any weeks off. I’ve just been trying to rehab and do the best I can,” King said Wednesday. “I’m still taking it day-by-day. A lot of people don’t understand the rehab process isn’t going to end before camp starts. It’s literally going to be all year…It’s going to be a long process, but I feel awesome right now. I’m ready to go.”

That’s news teammates, coaches and Miami’s fans are, understandably, excited to hear.

“I want to see him get back to what he loves, but we’ve also seen, inside the program, the work he’s put in since his surgery and what he’s done in his rehab. You can’t forget that,” said Hurricanes head coach Manny Diaz. “When our fans get to watch him play, you’ll get to see the end product, but every step along the way, all he’s done to get back on the field, he’s been relentless. I couldn’t be more proud of him.”

Last fall, King – a transfer from Houston – wasted little time in emerging as one of Miami’s leaders on and off the field.

He helped engineer comeback wins against both North Carolina State and Virginia Tech. He dazzled in both Miami’s 52-10 win over rival Florida State and the Hurricanes’ top-20 road win at Louisville.

King finished the year completing 64 percent of his passes, throwing for 2,686 yards and 23 touchdowns, while rushing for another 538 yards and four more scores.

He announced just before Miami’s Cheez-it Bowl matchup against Oklahoma State that he would take advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted to student-athletes because of the COVID-19 pandemic and excitement for the 2021 season began brewing quickly.

But with 4:06 left in the first half of that game, everything changed.

Nice to see the Blog coming alive again after my trip to central fla. for 2 1/2 weeks. I had to get my sister into M.D. Anderson Cancer Research Center
for treatment of stage 3 breast cancer. While there her daughter, my niece had a major stroke and is no longer with us. Not a very good trip.

I had a chance to meet my friend Tom Papadak for a very enjoyable lunch. We talked a little about my experiences and life over the years and of course some Canes football and beating Alabama 34 to 17. I will be 79 September 30th and been a avid Fan since I went to the old Orange bowl in 1946 with my Dad.

I am again believing our beloved Miami Hurricanes are going to be great again. They better be I am running out of time,

If ever there was a time for them to be had, it's this game.
The game will be won in the trenches. I don't see us running to much against them and I see them trying to ram it down our throats, especially breaking in a new QB.
Not ready for a prediction, I would be but our LBing situation is scary. If they go missing in action, it could make for a long ugly game.

The University of Miami football team checked in at No. 16 in the preseason USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll Tuesday.

The Hurricanes, who finished the 2020 season with an 8-3 mark, are one of three teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference represented in the initial poll. The Hurricanes return 10 of 11 starters on offense and nine of 11 starters on defense.

Miami opens its season against No. 1 Alabama on Sat., Sept. 4 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

I just do not know what to think; a team, 8-3 last year lost to Clemson bad UNC bad...lets face it, we quit gave up rolled over versus both...I hate QUIT! We quit late against Clemson....we knew we were going to lose. We quit before we took the field against UNC.....I would have fired CMD that night....it was just like Golden...losers.

So we do not see Clemson this year....but Bama is in that class and we will lose. Though we have a lot of starters back....we are no longer giant killers like days of old....we will lose to Bama...maybe not blowout...maybe....and again we will lose to UNC. They are better teams and are better coached....theres the rub....better players better coached. UVA VT and UNC were close last year...and should be good games. FSU we have beat 4 in a row...but ya never know.

I figure we lose 2 for sure...and find a way due to lack of consistency and attitude on the field and by the coaches to lose a couple more...and once again go about 8-4.....and get drilled in a bowl because of consistency and attitude on field and by staff to have another 8-5 whatever year....just like the last 18 years....good enough for some folks as some people think if you win more games than you lose you did good....cheer, drink a beer and give everyone a trophy that says yay we all won together...winner winner chicken dinner.....
Not good enough....no championship....not real good...just me folks!

I hope I am wrong...and could be....but I just do see the athletes or coaches doing well enough regarding fundamentals, commitment, attitude, intensity, teaching and coachability....just like the last 18 years.....I hope I am way off...but have come to expect it....how could we not expect...mediocrity....18 years of it...tack on another....hope not!!!

I hear ya dog! It's sad that we really don't have one legit LB out of 8 or 9, that we can, " now that's a player". Not one! As of right now, our 2 best DE's are McCloud and Johnson. Whom has played mainly LB, in a 3-4 defense.
Our safety's better be legit and tackling machines and CB's too or it could be UNC all over. Until I see it, I have zero confidence in our LB's.

I have noticed that for years we had the same old offense; mainly due to really average slow slew footed QBs..I an 62 and could smoke them in my sleep. Now in DK we have a good QB....Not unreal....but probably the most dynamic since KD. I am not sold on the line....and I am not a big fan of catchers of the ball.

There were several years we had a monster D....but no Oline or QB. This year we have a good QB....but I dunno about the D. The line is good....but boy once you get through that line.....it may be 88 and out the gate.....we better tackle strong and often Herbster....or opening day may be a long day!

Roachcoach.....that is a great analysis question....I felt even in years when we had good D.....we did not play D consistently....I'd say.....ohhh since the Fiesta Fiasco of 03....18 years!

Folks, I am not trying to be negative here...I hope we go 12-0, get to the playoffs and beat down everyone like the days of old.....but I aint betting the house on it....unless of course, Fearless Leader 86 has one lined up for me somewhere in Hollywood FL when I lose mine....LOL

Negative.

But holding the opponent to FGs and outscoring them will be the name of the game. People always underestimate the importance of field position and special teams play. Pay more attention to this area of the game. Our kicking game looks very solid again this year. Kick coverage and the return game is going to be critical.

I hate being inconsistent on D...but would agree....if you can make critical stops on the opponents end of the field forcing punts, if you can make key third down stops forcing FG attempts, if you can make big plays on kickoff and punts getting the ball and giving the ball up, make some FGs and have DK buy time and get a couple scores.....and get some TOs....we could be 10 - 2...I can only hope for that....I just dont know...guess all of us have been guessing for 18 years....IJS

Well, we got some DB recruiters finally. Matter of fact, aside from a couple DL, DB's are the warmest, even with William's coming aboard. Hell, if we can get them all, getem.
Aside from Bisainthe and Stewart, it's all DB's.
Online recruiting is lagging, even though we got 3 warms, we are not the number 1 choice of those 3 guys.
TE looks like portal city.
We aren't going after any RB's because we got Brown from Tenn.
I believe 17 high schoolers, is all they are going to sign and with their new recruiting tactics, it might be tough for us to get to 17.
