It’s a busy and exciting time of the year for Miami Athletics as we have nine teams currently competing while our baseball and basketball teams have started practice in preparation for their upcoming seasons.
Our football team is off this weekend and looks to get back on track next Saturday, October 16, with a key ACC showdown at North Carolina. Kickoff is 3:30 p.m. on either ESPN, ESPN2 or ACC Network. The network designation will be announced this Monday. Good luck to the Canes in Chapel Hill!
We have three more football home games remaining — October 23 against NC State, November 6 against Georgia Tech and November 20 versus Virginia Tech. The NC State game is our annual Pink Game and we will also be honoring the 2001 national championship team on their 20th anniversary. Our Homecoming celebration is slated for November 6.
Please click HERE for ticket information. We look forward to seeing you at Hard Rock Stadium!
We inducted legendary coach Howard Schnellenberger into our Ring of Honor at halftime of last week’s game against Virginia. Howard’s wife, Beverlee, and sons Stuart and Tim also served as our honorary captains during the pregame coin toss and more than 40 of Howard’s former players were there to share in the special moment. I want to thank the Schnellenberger family and everyone who came out to honor Howard. We miss you, Coach!
Our volleyball team ran its record to 13-2 this week with a 3-1 win over Florida State at home. The Canes, off to their best start in 10 years, now own a 4-1 mark in ACC play. Keno Gandara’s squad looks to continue that momentum tonight when we square off against Duke in Durham at 6:30 p.m. Good luck to the Canes!
Our soccer team lost a heartbreaker at Wake Forest on Thursday night, 2-1 in double overtime. The Canes will look to regroup Sunday when they face top-ranked Florida State in Tallahassee. Kickoff is 12 p.m. on Bally Sports Florida. Tune in to root on the Canes! Goalkeeper Melissa Dagenais is the reigning Co-ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors after posting her fourth clean sheet of the season in our win at Boston College. Congratulations to Melissa!
Our cross country squad is off this weekend before heading to Charlottesville, Va., on October 15 for the XC23 Invitational – their last meet before the ACC Championships. Our women’s team captured their 6K division race at last week’s Paul Short Invitational and are currently ranked 14th in the Southeast Region. Elle Mezzio earned ACC Freshman of the Week honors – the first Cane to do so since the award launched in 2016. Congratulations to Elle!
Our swimming and diving team defeated FIU in its first dual meet of fall competition last weekend. Next up is a trip to Dallas this weekend for the SMU Classic, which features Missouri, Michigan, Arizona and Louisville in addition to the host Mustangs. Good luck to the Canes in Big D!
Our golf team, which finished second in its last outing at the Mercedes-Benz Invitational, returns to action on October 17 at the Jim West Challenge hosted by Texas State. Good luck to the Canes on the links!
Our tennis teams are continuing their fall tournament action this week. Isabella Pfennig advanced to the second round of the ITA All-American Championships in Charleston, S.C., before dropping a tough three-set match to the third seed. The rest of the team is competing at Vanderbilt’s June Stewart Invitational, which also features Kentucky, Illinois and Iowa State. Benjamin Hannestad advanced to the second round of this week’s ITF event in Naples, while Dan Martin dropped his opening match. The rest of our men’s team is heading to Athens, Ga., to compete in the Bulldawg Invitational, which features 12 of the top teams in the nation. Best of luck to all our tennis student-athletes!
As I mentioned, our men’s and women’s basketball have started practice and both teams have an exciting and challenging journey ahead of them in college basketball’s most competitive conference. Season tickets are on sale now. Click HERE for more information on men’s season tickets and HERE for more information on women’s season tickets. We look forward to seeing you at Watsco Center!
The UM Sports Hall of Fame announced its Class of 2022 last week. The 2022 class is comprised of 10 Miami greats representing eight different sports at The U — Jeff Alkire (baseball), T’erea Brown (track and field), Lane Carico (volleyball), Conny Falk (tennis), Cleveland Gary (football), Tim Harris (track and field), Shenise Johnson (basketball), Jack McClinton (basketball), Brittany Viola (diving) and D.J. Williams (football). The Class of 2022 will be formally introduced during an on-field ceremony at our football game against Georgia Tech on November 6. Congratulations to all!

Why???
Posted by: 86Cane | October 08, 2021 at 11:15 PM
Not going to say "we should hire Butch Davis" at this point but IF we had back when at the very least he would have brought accountability to this program. If nothing else!
Posted by: 86Cane | October 06, 2021 at 12:43 PM
Agreed. I wanted him instead of Richt. Oh well.
Posted by: CGNC | October 08, 2021 at 07:07 PM
Accountability comes from mature, responsible adults who had to work HARD for everything they ever earned. Howard had it, Jimmy had it, Butch had it, but yeah, Manny not so much.
This is the issue.

I'm excited for Fake Lames to be fired.

For people who claim they wanted butch before manny was signed, think of this; what mark gave us, butch wouldn’t have; the IPF, facility upgrades, and more on the way. We need this bad. Now we can look for a badass coach plus this facility additions/upgrades. The sky will be the limit now.

Thank goodness we have a bye week for Manny to get this team ready to curb stomp the Tarheels.
🤣🤣🤣
Posted by: KYcane | October 09, 2021 at 08:30 AM
Curb stomp, say what? A Manny Prepared team coming off a bye week and not 14 days but 16, usually results in us getting curb stomped, although we did break through last year and did win a game coming out of a bye week.
I would just like to see a semi complete game from a Manny lead team and not completely awful. Seen enough of dem reruns.

KY great pic. Poor Charlie fell for it again.
So did we...

FIU lost again. The Panthers are 1-5 for the season. And they have lost 12 of their last 13 games.
It's a good thing Miami isn't playing FIU again this year. It could REALLY be embarrassing.

I gave myself a treat and nostalgia too. I watched the Championship Canes game: Dorsey, Andre Johnson, Shockey, etc. game. What a joy. Saw them all in Syracuse, with all the greats. Coker let me in, while they were eating breakfast. No small feat. Like a kid at a concert, I was thrilling, getting autographs! at age 54!!

LOL I didn't claim to have wanted Butch back then, I DID want him back then. As for the IPF - Carol Soffer is the main donor - donating $14 million of the 40 million raised - yes CMR kicked in money and promoted it - but possibly to cover the nepotsm for hiring his son?
And as for the IPF, how is our win loss record and play on the field with it?

Lashlee needs to be watching the Texas OU game and see how to run the football, not an attempt at futility that we display. Offensive linemen need to be sitting right beside him.
Tackling issues were brought in this game as well, especially Oklahoma's secondary.
OAK. dumped Rattler and is coming back, with a back up. Don't want to hear any excuse about us using a back up.
Either u can or can't.
My early prediction for next week has us getting pillaged 34-17.
With 16 days to prepare, I don't want to listen to any excuses. If the score ends up worse, then that dude needs to go like yesterday. The only way Danny Miaz gets another week, is if we are competitive and keep it close but in The Herb's humble opinion, that is a Laffer.😁
Posted by: HerbieIbis | October 09, 2021 at 03:26 PM
OMG! Texas is a worse tackling team than us. And they call a cover 0 to stop a 4th & 1. The running back cleared the first tackle and there’s no one there to bring him down.
Posted by: AfriCane | October 09, 2021 at 04:07 PM
CGNC, u won’t get an argument from me about our play. What I’m simply saying was that getting mark was a better move than getting butch because we were heavily over due for facilities. Mark promoted and pushed for it. It would probably might have not been butch’s priority. Now we can focus on fixing our coaching. Also, hindsight is 20-20. When mark did well in ‘16 & ‘17, going into 19, we did not think we were going to wet the bed. So actually, the guy gave us facility upgrades plus did well for 2 years.
Perspective

I don't get it, teams have WR's open all over the place and we make DB's look all world.
Posted by: HerbieIbis | October 09, 2021 at 05:24 PM
Afri, we can respectfully agree to disagree LOL - we don't know what Butch's priority would have been for us because he was not hired.
I wouldn't say 2 good years - maybe 2 better years - there were red flags. As for 16 through 18 - I was at those games in person and watched the vanilla offense and poor QB play with Rosier. There were games we won that easily could have gone the other way and eventually did circa 2018. Actually we did see what was coming and weren't surprised really.
As for new coach - I don't want Blake James involved, who knows what he would come up with

Did Blake James and the UM administration actually do something RIGHT when they hired Manny Diaz as head coach?
Posted by: nemo2020 | October 09, 2021 at 05:56 PM
CGNC
Exactly
Butch easily, hands down the better candidate before Randy, Goldie locks, richt. Not manny - at that time we needed to get a younger coach IMO
Posted by: AeroCane | October 09, 2021 at 06:33 PM
As for UNC
Not good but will still beat us by 30 (I’m hoping as I pray it’s manny’s last game as the hurricane coach)
PS I think butch would be a great replacement for Blake James)
Posted by: AeroCane | October 09, 2021 at 06:37 PM
I hope Butch gets something at the U, so everyone will quit talking about him.
FSHoo beating UNC just proves how worthless this conference is, a bunch so teams that will rise up every 3 years and win 9 games, aside from Clemson. Worst 5 conference in football.
The only good thing, is it makes for interesting games, where anybody can beat anybody, any given Weekend. Mid American level at best.

I watched GA fundamental, not flashy, play hard D run it...old school football...Iowa...old school coach...loves his kids...not flashy play hard lay it on the line...fundamentally sound...thats football they play...real football..Iowa D played really good...we have a terminally ill fundamentally unsound patient in the U...this is the result of 18 years of doing things the wrong way...bad hires, bad ADs, promises promises doing things all wrong...this staff cannot spell fundamentals so how can they teach them...they cannot...but these kids dont want to learn either...they think Football is where you hi five, hip bump, TD rings, TO chains...all part of the BS culture that started on the floor of the Fiesta Bowl 18 years ago...it has manifested and metastasized throughout the entire athletic department...specifically football baseball basketball...Mens...3 major mens sports...sad sad tale of demise!!!....IJS
KY KY get that picture right...I love Charlie Brown...but we need that dumpsta fire brother!!!!

Read article further down on page about the new practice facility when it was opened...a fight in practice....S**t...these guys are the biggest kitty cats I have ever seen...I bet it was a slapfest....11 year old girls....there is not a man in that locker room who would stand up and throw a punch...a bunch of punches...
I got disciplined once at VT for jumping a coach...he had the bad habit of swinging his whistle on its lanyard and hitting ones helmet if you ever had a helmet on when it happened...it rings the ears...he did it one time too many...I was barely 18 freshman...told him if he did it again...he said you wont do S**t...and did it...I tackled him in full gear...slammed him...they pulled me off...I got sent home...but God Bless Danny Ford....he loved it...he had coached with this guy at Bama and under Jimmy Sharpe...knew the guy was a jerk...he loved it...I practiced with LBs for a couple weeks...and he never came close to me again... I was young and the smallest guy on the team...and youngest...but never take no grief!!!! They said I was crazy then...wooo must be certifiable now!!!!
There is not a fighter on this team...they seem to accept and enjoy losing...a learned habit it is...CMD and co dont care...they getting paid...why win?
IJS...and by the way we are 4-0...had a bye this week...beat the Favorite to win it all last week....got the 2nd Fav coming up...we are overlooked...but my guys have come together really well...I been pushing them to achieve by talking about the once mighty U...how when you cruise on the past, think you win by just taking the field...you become a doormat...laying flat getting walked on cleaning their feet...yup...thats us...IJS

We certainly don't need any of that around The U. I see what U are saying.

Remember when someone here said well at least we are better than FSU? And I said hold on a minute, we haven't beaten them YET. Now IF UNC beats UM next week what will we say then?
Things that make U go hmmmmmmmmm...

Great points
UNC will beat us next week. We will put Howell right back into the heisman race and their RB a doak walker candidate- I see us losing 45-20 and I pray it’s manny’s last game in any capacity at the U!
As for FSU, with our speedy, instinctive LB’s, we should contain their QB - LOL (for you non comical people out there; that was sarcasm)

I had felonious sexual-assault university plus 15 1/2 points and under 62 1/2 total combined points. Game is still a toss up as it was at the start of the year.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | October 10, 2021 at 02:51 PM
Well done OGV.
I had the opposite with UNC covering but I guess we know how that went. Overall I had a good, profitable day except for that one that I figured was a "lock". Shows how much I know. But at least over 4 weeks I am ahead of where I started so that's the good news.
I should have bet the Gators to cover as they beat Vandy 42-0. But I just can't make myself bet for the Gators no matter what the circumstances are. LOL
Today I have:
Bucs to cover over Fish
Saints to cover over Wash
Packers to cover over Bengals

I heard Brandon Meriweather say on his YouTube show that miami tried to fire manny earlier in the season, but his dad intervened. Apparently his dad is on the BOT??
Posted by: AfriCane | October 10, 2021 at 04:08 PM
Afri
I hope he’s incorrect and I don’t believe it. Manny’s dad is not that powerful and would have to abstain in any discussions regarding his son. JMO
If I was on the board, I’d tell his dad to gtfo and insist on firing his loser son!
Posted by: AeroCane | October 10, 2021 at 04:36 PM
NO, Manny’s dad is NOT on the Board of Trustees. I just looked it up. His dad used to be the mayor of Miami. That is it. So, we must get rid of the guy, ASAP.
Look up the members of the B of T. You will see many former Canes on it. So we must get it done.

Here’s the situation with arrest of Miami assistant recruiting director Mike Rumph
Former University of Miami football star and assistant coach Mike Rumph, 41, now the Hurricanes assistant director of recruiting, has been arrested. Rumph was arrested on Saturday in Weston, according to court records, on a felony charge of driving with a suspended license for the third time. He was also slapped with a traffic ticket of disobeying a stop sign. He is no longer in custody. South Florida radio host Andy Slater first reported the arrest via Twitter on Sunday morning. Court records show more than 20 traffic citations in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties alone over the past two decades, including repeated charges of driving with a suspended license. Rumph’s license was suspended in 2018, according to court records, for failing to comply with traffic school for a careless driving ticket involving an accident in Miami-Dade. He’d also gotten a red-light camera ticket in Broward County earlier this year. He pleaded guilty and paid $268 in fines for that case.

More bad mojo!
Posted by: nemo2020 | October 10, 2021 at 06:25 PM
All I can say is this: at one time he was a great college cornerback; he could shut people down! As a coach, he was not a recruiter, and I never thought anybody he coached was even a good CB...certainly not a Shut Down!
Now that hes been moved off the field and is not coaching...he still does not know how to stop anybody...but he sure knows how to get stopped; 20 tickets over 20 years...20 tickets the Miami Metro officers need to stop policing and start coaching DBs....they sure shut his stupid AZZ down eh?
Just another embarrassment in a long line of them for 18 years...at least when guys screwed up in the day...we were in the hunt every year...we were title contenders....I hate losers ON and FF the field...at least win ON the field...IJS...SMH Jeez....

This Season Is and Has Been A Train Wreck SMH
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | October 11, 2021 at 09:58 AM
Just another excuse for the BOT and Jake Blames to hang onto to this foul up.
This whole season has been effed up. All those returners and back-ups with experience and what have they got to show for it, beat downs and squeakas.
It took 3 weeks to figure out he needed shoulder surgery?
What about being prepared to play, which we have not been. What about execution? What about tackling, which seems to be an college epidemic. What about the play calling and drops. Not getting to the QB for sacks. Where are the recruits, all those big timers who got hamburgers shoved down their throats back in June. Thanks but no thanks. I can't blame them. He wants to stack top classes, well this ain't the way to go about it.
Please UNC, beat us down, put the final nail we need in the coffin.
Just put us out of our misery. U know we are going to give u the ammo to do it.
