Hard to imagine a top recruit making a decision without having some idea of who will be the HC. But people make all kinds of stupid decisions in Life… so perhaps he knows something we don’t

Personally, not too excited about Mario. Was more so a week ago. Now I am worried about typical UM tunnel vision. Like the kind that led to Manny’s hiring.

HerbieIbis

I'd say he made a business decision and finally a kid smart enough to say he committed to the school not a coach.

AeroCane

Dallas
If you read my post above, you’d see he’s not stupid - he chose the university of Miami (for numerous reasons) and not manny. If it’s manny he’s ok but if it’s not he’s ok as well.
You also have to remember it’s so easy for kids to transfer these days with the portal

DallasTX Cane

But if you’re a top recruit and have a shot at the League, committing to a school and not a coach is a poor business decision. It’s idealism > reality. My daughter just wrapped up her college soccer career - coach & staff make or break the experience and dominate some 40 hours per week of your life for 4-5 years.

Either way… nice to get some positive Cane news for a change!

DallasTX Cane

Fair point Aero. The portal has changed everything

DallasTX Cane

Not calling the kid stupid. But after living the college athlete experience as a parent, I’d never advise anyone to commit to a school vs a coach (and staff) with only the Ivy League and perhaps one or two other exceptions such as Stanford.

But happy to have a top recruit committed!

AfriCane

The U’s brand is strong. I live in nyc and I get a shout every time they see that U on my chest.
I came over to Maryland over the weekend for a job opportunity and the same thing. Brand in a class by itself.

HerbieIbis

Got a feeling Canes are going to be left holding that bag of loot. Manny out recruiting. Doesn't seem to me that he is coming but that is my opinion. If no Mario, I just don't believe they will turn to Kiffin, dammit. We will have to suffer through another year of nail biters against every low life team we play.
We still can't run the football, no matter who we play.

Sarasota 'cane

It would be so “on brand” for the UM admins and BOT’s to back the Brinks truck up to a guy who just went practically scoreless in the biggest game of his career. If the Oregon fans are not BBQing Mario today then he should stay in Oregon. We’re already BBQing him and he isn’t our coach yet.

AeroCane

Herb
I agree - as we’ve all said, we should have a back up to Mario and not just ‘it’s Mario or nothing’ - that sucks.
But I disagree that we have do thru nailbiters etc as I for one will not watch or care until his pos ass is fired!
Also, I hope if Mario turns us down, we say eff you and never offer him again!

It's a CANES thing! You DO understand.

KYcane

So much for Kiffin
He just did a new deal with Ole Miss

AeroCane

Ky
Only cause we are so effed up that we didn’t jump on the opportunity to get him
Could of fired pos manny the minute after Duke and hired him rather than effing around with politics and Mario

HerbieIbis

Well I said yesterday it was Mario or bust and that I doubted they would even turn to Kiffin if they did get turned down by Mario.
It sucks. They could of at least talked to him and maybe that would of prompted Mario to shut the snooze button off.
This is really going to suck if Mario doesn't go rogue. Being stuck with Manny another year, jeezus. Watching inept coaching and lack of discipline and game prep.

AeroCane

Interesting

Source: The John Ruiz family is ready to launch ambitious plan to build UM a football stadium in Coral Gables
It would be at coral gables high school and they would build a new school elsewhere

Per inside the U

AfriCane

The new coach at Norte dame has about the same profile as manny Diaz except manny has even more experience. They didn’t do a national search either. And note dame’s admin is considered to be strong.
So u see canes fan’s UM is not doing anything out of the ordinary.
The only difference is, our experiment hasn’t paid off. Norte Dame’s might.
Oh yeah! He’s also a players coach.

AfriCane

Aerocane, wow!
All of a sudden, money coming from everywhere.

HerbieIbis

Africane
It won't, at least not to begin with.

AfriCane

What I want to know is that, why didn’t the UM alum thinking of this.
Let’s hope Coral Gables community board doesn’t poo poo this. We should all spam CG city with emails and demonstrate out of their offices to force their hand.

AfriCane

Well, herb, if they kept all the position coaches, it should be plug & play for them. I’m assuming Norte dame will always be able to recruit.

AeroCane

Afri
They say it could run as much as 400 million and he’s ready to foot the entire thing personally. HOWEVER, zoning, permits, relocating the school
Not really sure this is feasible but cool to think about it

VA Cane

So u see canes fan’s UM is not doing anything out of the ordinary...True Afri...true

Of course not; they been doing the same old song and dance(tip o da cap to you Aero) or what I call Bullshit since January 2001 when Larry Coker was named coach after Butch left after the 2001 Sugar Bowl victory 1/3/2001..Coker was named HC late Jan...thats 20 years of the SOS...resulting in 5 coaches that were not bad people...well Onion was not a nice guy but not a bad person...but were not the right coach.

The whole problem is the Preidents and the BOT...and to an extent the ADs...they never did coach searches...they just filled the position...thinking it was just a plug in! The AD has been bad for a long time as well...Paul Dee was the last decent one, but he was there when Coker took over. It has been 20 years of failure, despair, and delusion. Sure 2001 and 2002 teams "won" NCs...but the rot set in when the coaching situation was not properly addressed in Jan 2001.

and now we get this...SOS...Manny aint gonna do shit he will stay and we will be a middle of the pack team again...some people love 7-5 getting drilled in a bowl...me I like titles winning competing!!!

This is important so I will stop here; later I will let you know details...family your 2021 season was not total failure...we won the Super Bowl today...big! tell you more later...tire and sleepy...but we won the title...for you!

TVD you do have skill...dont stay young man...you can be on the big stage in the wink of an eye...CMD is a fraud...you deserve better...sorry JMO

AfriCane

Aerocane, u might have been too, but I was in miami when Colombian drug money built the city. Those times have past, but the politics remains the same. Bribery still works.
It use to be that u couldn’t build too tall, blocking the skies. Well, rich developers took care of that.

AeroCane

Let’s hope so afri! That would be absolutely amazing!!

HerbieIbis

All this moodiness ain't going to get The Herb down because today is his B-Day, 64 and believe me I feel everyone of dem years in my hips.
Nothing would making this day better, than for them feet dragging higher ups to get The AD in place And For the BOT to get the man of they're dreams Mario to be the next football coach and after reading yesterday, that Ruiz wants and will build them a stadium, dam the worm didn't turn he has done cut a flip.
Everybody all at once, thanks to Herbsreit, is tired of getting bent over and getting the high hard one.
Whatever and however, I don't care as long as it all comes to fruition.
A new stadium would the last piece of the puzzle. Recruiting would be so much easier and the peeps would come out of the wood work. What a spectacle that would be.

nemo2020

They say it could run as much as 400 million and he’s ready to foot the entire thing personally. HOWEVER, zoning, permits, relocating the school

First, the cost of building a suitable stadium and rebuilding CGHS elsewhere could easily exceed $400 million (not that that is an issue for a multimillionaire, I guess). On the "plus side" if a new stadium on this site is formally owned by the school board, some city/county building and zoning restrictions can be bypassed.
Second, UM is in the midst of a huge fundraising campaign. And it still still needs to raise another billion dollars to meet its fundraising goal. So, UM certainly wants a record setting (mid nine figure) donation from Ruiz but not for a football stadium.
Third, there are better locations than CGHS, I think. What about Ponce Middle School, across from UM? Is the site big enough, if most parking would be on campus? Also, if the City Beautiful was cooperative (which it is not), and sufficient money was truly available, eminent domain could be used to condem enough property west of the athletic fields (mainly the fraternity houses, which could be relocated) to build a small football stadium. And Tropical Park is always an option too.
Finally, on a more positive note, it really would be great to build an on-campus (or a near-campus) football stadium as the cornerstone of UM's 100th Anniversity Celebration in 2025.

AeroCane

I don’t know Nemo
I’ve never built a 50k modern stadium so I really don’t know the cost. As for better locations ask mr Ruiz! LOL
It was mentioned he has some property across the street from CGHS and had said he could put in a parking garage

"Early whisper is Cristobal wants to stay in Eugene but will talk it through in next 24-48 hours w his camp."

Reports from Oregon say that Cristobal is out recruiting now.

Sad to say, in this high stakes coaching carrousel, for UM it's either CRISTOBAL or BUST (aka Manny Diaz).

Oregon to target Chip Kelly if they lose Mario Cristobal to Miami?
https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/ncaafb/if-mario-cristobal-leaves-for-miami-chip-kelly-may-return-to-oregon/ar-AARtBpf?ocid=msedgdhp&pc=U531

If Mario Cristobal is to leave Oregon for Miami, will the Ducks set their eyes on their former head coach to replace him?

If you believed that the college football coaching carousel could not get any crazier, the Miami Hurricanes have entered the fray. With the Manny Diaz era nearing its end, Miami is reportedly making a big run at Oregon's Mario Cristobal to return to the school he played offensive lineman for to be their head coach. But, the Ducks are prepared to make an aggressive offer to keep Cristobal. But what are the Ducks to do if the Cristobal ultimately leaves for Miami?
Oregonian columnist John Canzano said on Saturday that he expects former head coach and current sidelines boss for the UCLA Bruins, Chip Kelly, to be a target for the Ducks.

Kelly joined Oregon back in 2007 as the team's offensive coordinator under then-head coach Mike Bellotti. Two years later, he was promoted to sideline boss and had nothing but success during his four years at the helm. Kelly coached the Ducks to the Rose Bowl in his first year and the BCS Championship Game the season after.

Overall, Kelly held a 46-7 record in his four years at Eugene before departing to the NFL to take over for Andy Reid as Philadelphia Eagles head coach.

Following his stints with the Eagles and San Francisco 49ers, Kelly returned to the college game in 2018 as Bruins head coach. After three losing seasons, Kelly and UCLA hold a 8-4 record in 2021.

College football has already seen Lincoln Riley leave Oklahoma for USC and Brian Kelly jump ship from Notre Dame to LSU this week alone. Could we see Cristobal leave for Miami and Kelly return to Oregon? At this rate, we can not rule anything out.

Mia Chi ‘Cane ‘98

Serious question… would you rather have manny for another year? Knowing we ‘ll probably get the same result? Or maybe have real head coach search and pick the right person for the 2023 season? Which still could be Christobal?

VA Cane

I would rather see UM drop down a level or 2 and play opponents on their level than keep trying to compete on a level they cannot. Face it we do not have what it takes anymore. Just be a great learning institute and play at the level your private small # of students achool should be playing at. Watch the big teams that played yesterday...we aint playing with them with where we are 20+ years after LC took over in 2001, followed by RS, AlPa,CMR, and Manny...time and change go hand in hand...the writings on the wall.
Know it accept it live it and love it for what its worth. Nothing wrong with being a footnote to prior glory and moving on in this new and changing world.

That's the thing about a coaching carrousel. What goes around, comes around.

Basura

Cristobal. $8M x5yr -ish

AfriCane

Oh shit!
They got cristobal!
I’m going to drink.

Sarasota 'cane

I want to go on the record and say I don’t hate Cristobal. I wanted Kiffin but apparently that ship has sailed. But…
I don’t want to overpay for Mario because if he doesn’t pan out we’ll be stuck with him because of the buyout clause. If the admins and the BOT are grinding on paying Manny’s buyout then how will they deal with a number that is two times larger down the road? Mario is not a proven commodity yet he’s commanding proven money.
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again…Mario Cristobal reminds me of Mark Richt with considerably less experience.

Go ‘canes!

AfriCane

Wait!
They hired cristobal without telling manny is fired first?
WTF????

Basura

It’s MC decision whether to retain MD?

AfriCane

But VA what r we supposed to do, go to the FCS level. U realize we were good enough to beat every team except bama this year and we probably had a chance if we had started TVD!
What do u mean drop a level? At the worst, we act like teams like Utah and Clemson and keep any ol’ coach for a decade and they eventually will win something, or we act like Cincinnati & eventually come around. So I don’t know what u mean by drop a level and y that would be needed. It’s like committing suicide because u have fever if u can’t afford the medicine, when u can actually sweat it out and u will eventually recover.

VA Cane

My sources tell me UM will get a run of the mill AD, cause "deep down inside...you want me on that wall you NEED me on that wall"....hmmm...

even if the guy from Clemson comes...there are no real coaches out there to look at. I like Mario as a guy...he was just a player here..no star so he was part of good stuff...no leader or standout. He spent a little time down the road and got fired spent some time with Saban and has been at Oregon a well (the best funded by a wacko liberal) funded second or third tier team...best win Ohio State a team short on D this year.

Face it Manny is back for another year...have a good QB and a couple WRs and RB...no OL a D that sucks and no idea about an O attack...Lashley was horrible...no OC yet... you got no recruits...well some LB who probably is a 3 *...cause if he were real good and smart and wanted to move on as a pro...he'd be somewhere else outside the ACC...BUT we got the greatest cornerback coach in the world in DVD....what has the world come to...he could't tacke a HS kid!

This football program is a terrible joke...and like Blue Oyster Cult said..."and the jokes on you"!

AfriCane

Sarasota, we r on the same team here. But read between the leaves. He’s going to be here all 5 years. There was not even an appetite to can manny. Miami will never treat another Cuban like that. Especially one that is related to one of Miami’s billionaires and who’s going to build us a stadium because of Mario coming here.

AfriCane

Basura, when have u ever seen a new coach retain al old coach? Doesn’t the old coach get fired first?
WAIT??? Holy shit is that’s what’s happening? Who the fock does that?
OMTFG???

Sarasota 'cane

If the news is true then welcome (back) to the U Mario Cristobal.

Ride or die!

Go ‘canes! 🙌

AfriCane

At least they didn’t give him 10 years

VA Cane

No Afri this Pres AD and BOT are stupid MFers and all have been since LC was made coach in Feb 2001....Butch had a team for the ages in place...after 2002 its all been downhill. Instead of listening to Reed and Dorsey they should have hired a real coach then and kept it going.
Nothing has happened good since then...even a couple 9-3 teams suck!!!

Winning isnt everything, wanting to win is the only thing....we have done nothing since Feb 2001 to show we want to win! Drop down be a good Div 2 or 3 team ....focus on academics football is dead at the Bama level for UM...thats the only place to be and we do not want to be there 20 years of driving a car with no oil proves that...take it from a football guy...the Presidents BOT and ADs have not wanted to win for 20 years...look at the facts and guess what..it shows we were lucky to have 2000 -02...since then the worst shit show on earth...everything bad nothing good...7-5 aint worth a F**k...shit you might as well be 0-12...no difference...

HerbieIbis

Well it looks like they got their wish. Super Mario is coming home.

nemo2020

Serious question… would you rather have manny for another year? Knowing we ‘ll probably get the same result? Or maybe have real head coach search and pick the right person for the 2023 season? Which still could be Christobal?

Posted by: Mia Chi ‘Cane ‘98 | December 05, 2021 at 10:48 AM

Serious answer. Get real! If Mario Cristobal signs a contract extension with a big increase in pay, there is NO WAY he would entertain an offer NEXT YEAR to leave Eugene for Miami. And assuming that he would even consider leaving Oregon next year, given the terms of a "Ducky" contract extension how much would UM have to pay Oregon - and pay him - to get him here? Much too much, I say.
But you may be partially correct. If we can't seal the deal with Mario, UM may be wise to roll with Manuel for another (dismal) season, and then see who becomes the next "hot coach" that might be on the market and a good fit for the Canes. After all, we're apparently going to pay the new AD upward of $1 million a year. Therefore, if we can't get Mario (here and now), we might as well allow the new AD to earn his salary by doing HIS JOB.

AfriCane

VA, I understand that your standard is EXCELLENCE OR BURST. Not that it’s not for me either. I just want us to keep trying. Not go down in level. The other school that r winning now that have no business been there have admins that don’t even know what it is to be where miami was and even them r winning now without going down a level.
I feel your pain. But I find your remedies more painful.
With all due respect of course.
