The Who, a rock band that some of you may have never heard of, once wrote:
I'll tip my hat to the new Constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
On Canespace there has been an on-going conversation for over 15 years about one central question in college football: "Does Coaching matter?" Now everyone knows that, of course, coaching matters. But how much is the real question?
And the question gets more complicated the deeper you dig. Is the recruiting process more important than coaching? Is it talent more important than coaching? And, how much does coaching really matter after all?
There are several opinions on each of these very important and interesting questions. I am going to separate recruiting and talent from this argument for the sake of this article. I am going to focus only on the coaching variable to try to make this argument very precise and concise.
When Bum Phillips was the head coach of the Houston Oilers back in the day he made the following complimentary statement about the Miami Dolphins head coach Don Shula (paraphrasing): "He can take his players and beat your team, and he can take your players and beat his team."
That statement clearly and directly indicated that coaching was the MOST important element of winning and losing. Most fans are somewhat in between deciding that coaching means all or nothing in winning and losing.
Some say it is 70/30 coaching versus talent. Some say it is 30/70 coaching versus talent. Others go with a 60/40 or 50/50 argument of coaching versus talent. But does anybody really know what the actual equation is? Probably not, and if they say they do, they are probably lying to you.
However, once and for all, we are about to answer this question at the University of Miami. If coaching matters we are certainly about to find out.
Newly hired head coach Mario Cristobal has hired an amazingly talented coaching staff in Coral Gables. A staff so incredibly talented, experienced, motivated and professional that we are frankly surprised that he, or any coach at any college, was able to accomplish this surprising and impressive feat.
So we are about to find out really quickly if Manny Diaz was a fraud and a failure or if the talent on the team was significantly below average.
Simply put, coaching will no longer be the acceptable scapegoat or the excuse, only the talent to win will be. The truth will reveal itself.
Time will tell, but my money is on Mario, and that coaching matters.
Then I'll get on my knees and pray, we don't get fooled again.
Go canes! Great article!

Nice work as usual SOUP!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
REALLY looking forward to the Cristobal Era! Off to a great start!

I am glad that I am still healthy and in fairly good shape because at nearly 80 yrs old I am tired of waiting. I truly believe that coaching matters and the long wait is about over because we have the talent to go along with the coaching.
I think we got it all this time.
Great article.

Little known fact. Jack Allison is the QB for West Liberty University, which is about an 11 minute drive from me. I had no idea until a friend told me because he's a big WVU and West Lib fan.
Crazy that he fell that far after being a 4* recruit.

Confirmed: Coach Field is staying as TE coach
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | March 01, 2022 at 09:40 AM
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, talent the same way.
Coaching matters, especially a motivator that can squeeze every last drop of talent out of someone.
Diaz left some talent but the only ones that seemed motivated were the Fr. and a few NFL eligible players. It seemed the rest were going through the motions and played when they felt like it.
Let's face it, who knows what Manny would of done with all this new found loot that is being lavished on our new coaching staff.
Mario is a bulldog and Manny was too laid back.
I would hate to think where we would have ended up in the recruiting rankings had they given Manny one more year.
Anyway that was then, this is now. We got enough talent to go at least 10-2 but we have been saying that most of the time for the last 20 years, maybe now we have the right coach that will help us maintain our expectations.
Let's see how many of these So. FLO. kids that are of the elite level he can keep home.
If he can stack talent and create competition we will start to roll again but Mario u got to get us SOME DAM LB'S!!!

Mario is the keynote speaker Tuesday at Lakeland’s Lake Gibson high school football banquet - what’s interesting is lake Gibson is home to Cormani McClain a 5 star CB we are hard after!

- go canes tonite! PLEASE beat boston, so when i watch tomorrow, i can begin my thursday morning with a smile on my face and a lightened soul
. . . i don't want to go into syracuse SA knowing we HAVE to win, in order to receive one of the "top 4 ACC double-bye" schlaboomy prizes

I love ❤️ my Canes, Canespacers, and the U, even though I could never afford to go to the U now. Never realized it, but my father took out a $10,000 loan in 1966, in order for me to attend the U. I feel so bad that I never knew that, and that my father isn’t here, for me to thank him. So, I will thank him here, on CANESPACE. I feel better already.
GO CANES!❤️Help Ukraine🇺🇦

Good job not letting coming up short cost you two games. Syracuse will refuse to go quietly but the time off in the conference tournament is now more valuable outside of almost everything but post season seeding, a nice problem to have!

- congrats to the canes on their double bye (bye bye?)
- congrats to coach L for most wins at miami (over 11 seasons) taking over from bruce hale (13 seasons)
- nice team win! all starting 5 did fine; particularly impressed with waardenburg & miller tonite
. . . double particularly impressed with wong finally going off ("wong" = "won g(ame)"
- would like to see them knock off syracuse SA and (more importantly) come out injury free!
Posted by: alpine | March 03, 2022 at 03:22 AM
not sure about rodney miller . . . thought he was injured, but coach put him in for some seconds the last 2 games
. . . meaning he's healthy? but not good enough to actually take on real minutes?
. . . surprised deng gak didn't get in at all with BC having taller dudes; but can't argue with a win! and i guess miller & waardenburg bang better than the skinny man

247 sports: NFL Hall of Famer Jason Taylor expected to join Miami’s staff in an off-field role.

^^ He was pictured with Bernie Kosar on campus this morning

I wonder if Taylor is replacing Reed?
Posted by: 86Cane | March 03, 2022 at 12:46 PM
Ed has still been on campus and at practices this whole time, I don't think he's being "replaced". I think we'll have both.

Well, we are all excited about Mario's hires but I don't see the cruits jumping on the Cane's Train yet. Figured by now, we would at least have 4 or 5 verbed. I guess they all must be from the show me state, like on field results.

Ed Reed - Chief of Staff
Jason Taylor - Associate Chief of Staff?
P.S. Are we still allowed to use the word "Chief"? Or is it now too politically incorrect?
P.P.S. Is this post too "political" for the Canespace blog?

Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | March 03, 2022 at 05:37 PM
You may be right, Herb, but we may not know all that is going on behind the scenes. Wasn't Jalen Brown, 5 star Gulliver HS WR, just an unofficial visitor to Coral Gables yesterday? Anybody know how it went?

Rambo ran a 4.53
I feel like he plays faster than that! Hope the fins get him.
Posted by: AeroCane | March 03, 2022 at 08:33 PM
Actually 4.51
And TSully - I’ve been asking and curious about that as well. But we can all agree / anyone, including a monkey would be better than patke as ST coach. LOL

Lady Canes come back from a 9 point deficit at the of qtr 1 to defeat Duke, advancing to play #4 Louisville in ACC tournament action tomorrow. At 18-11, a win over a ranked team they lost to earlier in the season, by 3, might go a long way.
Posted by: JCane | March 03, 2022 at 11:06 PM
lady canes looked disappointing 1st 2 quarters; 2nd half they were much stronger; deserved the win
. . . i love watching destiny harden rumble!
- as jcane says, match-up tonite 6 p.m. est
. . . would like to see them get at least one more in this acc tourny; to help with post-season invite
Posted by: alpine | March 04, 2022 at 06:43 AM
- re jason taylor, can't totally figure out the idea of a 2nd roving figure (like ed reed), but if they let him roam the sidelines, his eye-candiness should bring 42.81% more females into the stadium
- and whenever we need the crowd to get extra-loud on those 3rd downs, just let him take off his shirt and see if we don't get some of that beatles-tour-america type screaming!
- i do think he's taylor-made to handle some real defensive stuff, like pass-rushing (which maybe he's supposed to do anyway; i'm not totally up-to-date on this)
- and he seems to be a great dude all-round; a nice "program face"
- so lets go recruit a bunch of argonauts and let jason lead them to glory!
Posted by: alpine | March 04, 2022 at 07:05 AM
damn Alpine going way back with Jason and the Argonauts-saw it when I was a kid those fighting skeletons at the end scared the crap out of me SO Real!! Spoke to my father in-law this morning he said the red army is a day away from his town (Lozovaya) were praying them don't send missiles on the way in

speaking of sport & ukraine:
here's an inspiring read regarding the klitschko bro-for-it!
"Between the two of them, the Klitschko brothers had the heavyweight division sewn up tight for over a decade, holding all the major belts between them while refusing, on their mother's wishes, to fight each other. They had extremely unusual backgrounds for boxers - Ukrainian sons of a Soviet military officer, they both hold doctoral degrees and speak multiple languages - but they became widely beloved in the boxing community by fighters of all backgrounds for their professionalism and integrity.
When older brother Vitali retired, he entered Ukrainian politics and became mayor of Kyiv, a post he still holds, advocating a pro-Europe, pro-democracy vision for his country.
The younger Wladimir fought until 2017. He may be known to some non-boxing fans for being the former husband of American actress Hayden Panettiere - she's tiny and he is a literal giant so they made a memorable sight at red carpet events. Since his retirement he has been busy with various business and charity endeavors as well as his gig as an adjunct professor at Switzerland's University of St. Gallen.
After the Russian invasion a few days ago, Vitali made the unusual choice for a sitting politician to take up arms and lead from the front-lines, while Wlad has journeyed back to Ukraine and joined the Kyiv Territorial Defense Brigade. Both brothers are millionaires many times over and could easily have chosen a more conventional route of raising money and awareness from the sidelines. As a boxing writer, fan, and hobbyist participant, I find it impossible not to be moved by their courage. They are acting like giants right now".

With some of these hires, or reported hires, Mario is building up a staff of additional coaches and off the field personnel to rival the big boys.
