When this men's college basketball season started not much was expected of your Miami Hurricanes. They were picked by "experts" to finish 12th in the ACC.
Some said they were short on talent, short in height and short on bench depth.
Some fans said their coach was old and tired and should be moving on.
Most people agreed that the Hurricanes would go quietly into the good night.
Turns out that these people were very wrong. In fact, they were dead wrong.
Coach Jim Larranaga delivered a coaching performance for the ages in shaping and molding the 2022 Miami team into something nobody expected.
A beautiful group of hard fighting, never say die, collection of misfits who exceeded all expectations and made it to the Elite Eight of the NCAA finals for the first time in UM history. We will take that anytime!
So on this short, but sweet note, we would like to thank Coach Larranaga and the 2022 men's basketball team for one hell of a fun and exciting ride.
You have earned our great respect and our sincere gratitude.
It was certainly not expected, and definitely exceeded all of our expectations.
Top Notch Soupster! Love ❤ 😍 It! Go Canes!

Great blog article 86!
From picked to finish 12th in conference to the Elite 8… quite a ride! Quite an accomplishment!
KU is a 1 for a reason. Just had too much size for us in the 2nd half and we went cold shooting - lot of decent looking looks that rimmed out. Sometimes U need some luck, especially to upset a 1 seed in March. Ours ran out today.
VA - saw lot of those tweets also. Great dude. Big loss for rock n roll

Having a top basketball and baseball program at Miami is a critical part of keeping alumni excited and engaged throughout the non Football calendar year. Watching Miami make history at March Madness has been an absolute blast. I hope we can reach even higher on the court by getting to a Final Four.
Kudos to Coach L, his staff and of course this great group of players for making us alumni proud to be Canes.

Wong was told last off season to have a pro future he needed to improve his three point percentage shooting; he took fewer attempts and shot 4.5% worse for this season compared to 2020-21's season. If he comes back another year, and there's no reason he shouldn't at this juncture, a starting five of him, Jordan Miller, Beverly assuming his back is finally shored up and injury free, Walker and Gak, if he develops a reliable post move while staying healthy again with Joseph, Poplar and Robinson as rotation core support along with a freshman or two can't keep knocking on the door of a Final Four banner to raise at the BUC. It'd be nice to watch Isaiah Wong have at least a year as the undisputed first scoring option in a Hurricanes uniform just from an entertainment perspective, hope it works out that way as he needs a dominant offensive campaign at this level to ensure he's not a pro castoff out of college right away.

Awesome game. I really was jumping up and down! Couldn’t believe that we won the first half and fell flat in the second half. But, as they say, “Cream Rises To The Top.” Gonna miss it, so much.
LOVE MY CANES, ALL MY LIFE! So now we have football, baseball, and basketball! ❤️❤️❤️

Surprised nobody else has said thgis yet so I will:
Larranaga did his job, exceeded all of our expectations and took the team to the Elite 8.
Mario, did you see how that is done? You are officially on the clock.

Great blog article! Great performance overall for Canes b-ball. I hope Wong comes back like OGV said
Nice Final 4 with NC vs. Duke. Since Coach K is retiring I hope Duke wins it

Wonderful job by Coach L.
As for CMC, to quote a line from the movie 2010, “Something is about to happen. Something wonderful.”

Miami offers recent LSU transfer LB Josh White who will have four years of eligibility at his next stop. He's a former Top247 prospect from Houston.

5* QB Jaden Rashada vising UM this Thursday and Friday. 6'4". Miami in a great spot with him because of Mario and Gattis.
IF we get him, a lot of skill guys are gonna want to play with him

I agree - he could be key to start the domino effect but he did say he has no timeline on his decision.
Posted by: AeroCane | March 29, 2022 at 03:53 PM
For sure, Aero. However, QB's generally commit really early and stick

Gaby Urrutia from 247 sports:
I’ve never seen the Miami staff do anything like what they just did when 5-star QB Jaden Rashada walked into the football building just now following his tour of campus. When when the doors closed behind them you could hear the applause and shouts from those guys.

Ohio
That’s awesome
This staff and Mario are terrific but we need to see the results with signatures for recruits and wins!
I’m super optimistic!

Shaka Smart coaching tree is pruned so The Pimp's coaching tree can flourish. Usually he picks very good assistants so we'll see who gets the call to replace Caputo, who did a great job all these seasons despite the roster talent drain these last several years.

Fun Tax Reading ...
Now that college athletes can earn money off their name, image and likeness (NIL) after the NCAA adopted new rules in June 2021, they may find a costly surprise from Uncle Sam.
Money made off of social media accounts and perks like free shoes, a clothing allowance, or use of a car all can be taxable, and ignorance of tax laws won’t save athletes from the IRS.

1-0 Duke heading the top of the 6th (canes at bat)
Need the bats to wake up

BTW
The Duke pitcher who is shutting us down thru 5 with only 3 hits has the stellar record of 1-5! LOL

Just like playing against the freshman 3rd string quarterback who’s only taken 5 snaps in spring practice.

KY - and not anymore!!
The canes score 4 in the top of the 8th and wins 4-1. Good comeback win but 1 good inning doesn’t change the fact that we went scoreless in 8 others!
I think we are 19-6 now. Very good!
Posted by: AeroCane | April 01, 2022 at 10:01 PM
4 in the 8th, all off the bat of SS, Dominic Pitelli, were enough to get the win vs. Duke. Nice to see pitching and D hold on a night the bats weren't working

Per inside the U:
A trio of Top100 talents are expected to attend the Hurricanes session headlined by Kissimmee Osceola defensive lineman Derrick LeBlanc, Dallas South Oak Cliff cornerback Malik Muhammad, and Venice EDGE Damon Wilson.
Other notable rising seniors expected in include Pittsburg (PA) Brashear Top247 EDGE Ta'Mere Robinson, Tampa Catholic Top247 linebacker Lewis Carter, Melbourne Eau Gallie Top247 athlete Robert Stafford, and Miami Northwestern wide receiver Andy Jean (a former Miami commit).

What could go wrong? I am sure that all of these college kids know the tax laws, save money to pay their taxes and will file their tax returns on time annually in accordance with IRS requirements. Easy, peasy, right?
Posted by: 86Cane | April 02, 2022 at 01:14 PM
86 - LOL
And they’re gonna owe cause most likely they are going to get 1099’s with no withholding rather than W-2’s and a 1099 carries an additional 15% tax over their regular income taxes.
Posted by: AeroCane | April 02, 2022 at 01:52 PM
1st scrimmage was held today. The herald has a good article about it. It appears the D won but not sure if Mario is saying that to get the offense more juiced up
I do love that he has the mentality of ‘we can get past any adversity and we can’t worry about the last play, just move on!’

And as you know as an accountant as a 1099 employee you are supposed to make quarterly IRS payments because there is no witholding of taxes like a W-2 employee has.
I am certain that ALL of these kids know this too and will faithfully follow the rules as intended. What could possibly go wrong?

Tomorrow we go for the sweep!

Noles have lost their first 2 vs ND
Gators have lost their first 2 vs UGA

Former Miami South Dade and Oregon offensive lineman Jonathan Denis announced on social media Sunday that he intends on entering the NCAA transfer portal.
Supposedly IF Mario wants him, he’s ours.

Like 86 said, 11-3 win for the sweep over Duke. What I have liked as of late has been the ability to finally complete a few team sweeps, including UNC. This is something that they'd been too inconsistent, between pitching, hitting and fielding, earlier in the season to do against anyone other than Towson State. Still have a long ways to go, but at least the trend is right.

I wonder if the vacancy on our men's basketball staff will be filled by a typical low-level assistant (such as an in-staff promotion) or maybe by an unofficial head coach in waiting.
The former is much more likely (I guess) but the latter would allow Coach L, in effect, to have some say in his likely successor and allow for a seamless transition when he retires (in four years or less).
I also wonder what role the new AD will play in the process of selecting and hiring someone to fill this vacancy on Coach L's staff.
Anyone have any ideas?
Posted by: nemo2020 | April 05, 2022 at 12:25 PM
Have No Idea Nemo but something to keep our eyes on. Should be interesting the next couple of months. We Finished Number 16 still bullcrap Should have finished no worse than Number 7. Actually I would have ranked them at Number 5. Go Canes!

Anyone notice that both the men and women got knocked out by the eventual national champions. Both had nice runs but ran into very good teams. When KU turns it up, it's crazy how fast things can turn.
