Your University of Miami Hurricanes football team appears to be both totally hopeless and seriously helpless. That is the sad truth about the 2022 season.
It is so bad early on in Mario Cristobal's first year as head coach that UM lost to lowly and completely unknown Middle Tennessee State University by 14 points at home at Hard Rock Stadium. The fans were not pleased to say the least.
MTSU then lost to University of Texas at San Antonio by 15 points.
MTSU lost today to the University of Alabama at Birmingham by 27 points.
So UM lost to team, that then lost to another bad team, and then lost to another really bad team. To the average fan that seems really bad, correct?
This is why Miami fans are not laughing at U, just near U.
In their first Alantic Coast Conference play against the University of North Carolina, Miami put up a late effort in the game only to lose it at home once again. And that was after a bye week, with time to heal, recover and prepare.
But that made absolutely no difference and was no advantage for the Hurricanes or Coach Cristobal. The offensive game plan was well, simply offensive. The defensive game plan was curious at best and in the end has no defense for giving up 27 points and 21 in the first half.
If Manny was fired for a reason, and Mario was hired for a reason, that reason is now decidedly unclear. Manny could have lost to MTSU. Manny could have lost to UNC. Manny could have had a poor defense and an anemic offense.
Then we have to ask ourselves, what has changed with this Miami Hurricanes football team? And the answer is right now...ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
First AGAIN

Very good article! The U in deep doodoo as this coaching staff is overpaid, overrated and underachieving!
PS van dyke throws underneath way too often - he still doesn’t seem to process the defense and the field quickly enough. Oh, and he is slow as crap!

I'm done bitching. U don't have to pay me 8 mill to see what's wrong. Stop neglecting The CB position in recruiting. They finally have some LB talent coming in but don't have nearly enough at WR. I figure u need 8 difference makers. 4 on offense and 4 on defense and at least one at each level. You look around, where are those guys at. We have supposedly the 13 most talented team in the land, so where are the dam stars.
The db coach is supposed to be some kind d of stud recruiter, so where are the DB's. Gattis, the same as WR coach. These dudes ain't earning their loot.
Could of had Briles but no, take your time Mario, like 3 months to get Gattis. You over thought every thing and by doing that it probably cost you Shemar Stewart.
Nobody expected you to go 12-0 but win the games you are supposed to win and be competitive against better teams.
Should of never lost to A&M or UNC but here we are once again losing games we shouldn't be losing. Some things 8 million can't buy.

The good news? With the portal, coaches don't receive 3-5 year windows anymore. They get a 1-2 year window. This is extremely painful to watch so I don't.
Better things to do than waste time with []_[].
I still have Dennis Erickson's letter to me when they started the recruiting process back in '94. Yes, that's right before he went to the NFL and I ended up in Tennessee. Their shenanigans crushed my dream then, they are crushing my dream now. Fuck 'em. Go Vols! Lol

One game season now. FSU. We have turned into Iowa State, only one game in a season matters -vs Iowa. We are a has-been afterthought. The U is dead. Will take time to get outta the gutter. If TN can do it, so can we. TN has done it and taken advantage of when the entire SEC is happens to be down (it’s just a 2 team conf now). But how about Oklahoma. Sucks to be boomer now too. DL is the only unit that is performing halfway decent. I guess punting too. Been far too long with the punter being the best player on the team. A problem which spans multiple decades and coaching staffs.

I get it, you don't like TVD but he is not the reason we lost. After 4 games not impressed with Gattis who appears to be better on paper than in person. I thought we were back with Uncle Enos in the first half when we ran the ball ineffectively over and over again and then turn over on downs in the red zone. We should have been throwing it to begin with since they had been stopping the run. I wish Briles would not have turned us down
Posted by: CGNC | October 09, 2022 at 10:16 AM
Why is Knighton on the field in a key third down situation? The guy drops passes and fumbles way too often. What a stupid call. Parrish is the most reliable RB we have. And this came when we were driving to tie the game! And why hasn't Young been playing? The guy has huge heart, great size, speed and hands!....Good recovery by TVD. Better pacing on the O. Terrible run blocking and play calling in the red zone....Tough loss....

We had 1.7 yards per carry rushing for a total of 42 yards. Not going to win many games with that stat

Sigh. TVD mentions in post-game interview that there are "off the field issues" and not one reporter asked a follow-up. I know practices have been closed.
Posted by: CGNC | October 09, 2022 at 12:12 PM
Well, the issues are consistency. Somebody different starting from game to game. Mario philosophy is if u practice hard u play. He wants competition and I'm sure the entitlement starts to factor in.
Nobody on the this team has been consistent, except maybe sweet Lou. Pretty bad when the punter is your go to guy.
I'm also sure there are those that are bucking the system and are not his guys.
Kinchens keeps running back in even if he keeps effing up. Where is Avante. He effed up and then pouted about it and hardly played for a min. Put the best players out their, talent wise and let them learn the hard way. Stephenson is overrated. Flagg plays hard but there are more talented guys.
On to Virginia and I see us upsetting them 24-20. There is a reason we can't run and it seems like we might be to predictable. Go fast and don't let up. We are not a homerun hitting team, therefore it gets tougher for us in the redzone. To much Vanilla. To much playing it safe.
It's one guy one week another guy the next week either effs up or plays good. To many problems to address but offense should have never been one of them, if they would of left it alone.
You got teams with way lesser talent having receivers running open all day long and putting up big numbers. Texas Tech on their 3rd string qb and he threw for 370yds. Somebody ain't developing somebody here or this offense is holding us back, which I think is what the problem is. Most of these kids come from spreads. Simplify the offense, play fast and let them have fun without having to think so much.
Posted by: HerbieIbis | October 09, 2022 at 02:03 PM
If there are “off the field issues”, then the team needs to find out what they are. Obviously something is critically wrong with the team. And we are finding out all this internal strife, weeks later. Those kids have enough to deal with, school, grades, peer pressure, etc. They shouldn’t have to have stuff, with trying to be a Miami Hurricane, playing their hearts out. I have been watching great Canes games, on UTube, and it is something very special.

Glad you posted, 86. I thought that we lost you forever. Pretty tough trying to get that green and orange blood, out of your veins.
I subscribed to ACC Network, just to watch my alma mater. But, it pains me so much, to see them trashed. When I was at the U, I think we only won 3 games, one year. But, like you, I took the bus and went to the games. Remember the Vietnam movie where the guy said, “I love waking up to the smell of napalm in the morning.”? Just like me, “I loved going to the Orange Bowl, smelling the overflowing toilets.”
Turn your head to the East, and there was that beautiful Moon Over Miami. Could never get any better than that.
College football is hard bench seats, cold weather, long bathroom lines, and all that good stuff. As a kid, I used to go, sometimes, with my parents, to South Bend, in the old stadium. Magical, mysterious and fun. Breakfast at the school cafeteria, tons of people marching to the stadium, behind the band, never leaving, no matter how bad the score was, and on and on. We have no traditions like that. Very sad. My father wrote most of the papers for the football team, so they could have the extra time to play football.
Enough of that. Time for another cup of coffee.
GO CANES❤️

Off the field issues? What? Like paying SOME players in excess of six figures, while others don't get that much? Not much effort in getting the taste of defeat outta your mouth when you can slide into that BMW after the game. Hey, who cares we lost...I'm still getting paid!

All good for me and my Mom. Her garage flooded and I’ve been helping her with that but thank God for updated elevation requirements and building codes! The older houses around her development off Bayshore In Naples all flooded. It’s really tragic. Sarasota fared a lot better. The south county communities like Englewood, North Port and parts of Venice were devastated by the water.
Mom still doesn’t have internet and she doesn’t have a sports pack on her TV so no Hurricane game for me today!
I can’t watch it on my phone either for some reason.
Thanks for asking!✌️

could be more except for 8 penalties for 79 yards.

We are behind even mediocre schools at this point. But I will take the W. 16 penalties for 144 yards. O-Line injuries make anything offensive difficult.
Posted by: CGNC | October 15, 2022 at 03:58 PM
Oh the tears are hilarious.
17 points at halftime, shut the toilet bowl circling joke program out three quarters and held them to 14 points. Game was over at halftime playing their D game. Win your clunkers but stop clunking halfway through the season.

Have faith Canespacers! We won woop tee Doo.
If it ain't one thing, it's another with this team. They just can't get out of the way of themselves.
Half the dam team is on the injury list and every week we are having auditions for those players making their case of are u going to the portal or are u staying.
Ain't to many on this team can bitch about
not getting a chance to play. Might have 60 lettermen by seasons end. The ones that don't get no letter are hurt.
Only going to make them better even though another season has to be sacrificed.
And no, we ain't losing to FSU.

I give every coach a fair shake before I pull out the pitchfork. We’ll see how he’s doing and adjusting in 2023 and 2024 when Mario has his players and coaches that didn’t come in from a fire sale.
Mario won the PAC12 twice, was coach of the year once, and he won a Rose Bowl.
I’m watching the Tennessee Alabama game and I’m wondering why a recruit who goes to a game like this or shows up for a half filled Miami UNC game would come to Miami.
And it was unsurprisingly revealed this week that kids are being lured away with NIL deals so there’s that as well. We’re not there. Hopefully we will be soon.

Maybe it’s time the school started listening to me!😂

Things to consider as the season progresses:
- Miami is down multiple offensive linemen. While numerically the position is fine, this is overall the weakest position at a blue chip level. Only three players on the line rate above 3 stars.
- Miami’s cornerback position was badly under recruited by Manny Diaz, to the point where only three CBS were signed over a three year period! We have seven on roster now, and three are true freshmen and a fourth is a transfer (Porter)
- Injuries have horribly attrited the running back position, which on paper was perhaps our strongest. Trevonte Citizen, Don Cheney, and Henry Parish are out, Citizen for 2022 and Cheney perhaps back near the end. We’ve got two backs left, the banged up Rooster and power back Franklin. But per the offensive line issues, it may not matter who is back there,
Long-term, I’m concerned about the S&C program. I saw a breakdown on another site about how Oregon’s SC coach essentially overtrained the athletes to the point where they suffered an usually high amount of injuries. We may be seeing them same here, as it’s the same coach and program.
Mario has holes to fill. In seven years under Manny we only recruited three blue chip linebackers - that’s a position that needs to be aggressively attacked. Offensive line is a must - we absolutely need quality at that position or we will end up like FSU. And WR needs a portal player.
Overall, this situation will improve. Talent will cure much of these ills. One thing to remember is that while we were 7-5 last year, at least 4 of those wins were by low margins. We easily could have been 4-8, and aside from 31
Players the rest of that team is back.

Pretty crazy how injury plagued the offense is.
Down three starting offensive linemen (I believe our best ones too)
Down our top three running backs
Down our top three wide receivers.
Posted by: TonyCane | October 15, 2022 at 07:35 PM
Tony,
U at the root of the problem with the lack of addressing certain positions. U see the same thing now, only one dee linemen, 1 DB, no RB and only 2 WR's. We need a home stadium near campus of course that is blasphemy for that to be mentioned but as far as the crowd goes, it's not like the ACC has a who's who of elite teams. This league is a downer. Who would get excited to go watch the ACC coastal schedule. Their might be 2 chump teams in the SEC.
Tenn. Bama game was awesome to watch. Offense everywhere. We struggle against everyone. We aught to be scoring 35 to 38 pts. A game. Nice we are averaging 400 yds of total Oh but where are the points.
Don't matter how good a dee is if you have a QB who can throw it.
Posted by: HerbieIbis | October 15, 2022 at 07:51 PM
TVD just can’t lift the team. He gets the stats but is not the guy! He continues to lock in on a receiver and he continues to miss the ‘best guy in his progressions’ and throw to the ‘easy’ guy! This was a game TVD should of been given a half and Garcia a half and let the competition begin. Imagine if saben never put in Tua in the championship game - tide loses and it took guts! Imagine if dabo didn’t insert true freshman Trevor Lawrence in for an established very good (college) qb Kelly Bryant - it took guts!
Heck TVD is getting all the stats and still can’t score!
Posted by: AeroCane | October 16, 2022 at 02:09 AM
Herb - good post! I agree! I think the db coach is a weak coach and a poor recruiter; I think Mario doesnt make the tough calls; like Garcia should of gone in earlier in the middle Tennessee state game; Garcia should of gone in for at least 2 series in the A&M game; what the deal with gattis and not playing Colby young sooner!? I’m tired but I’m sure there are more examples!!
