On the same day that Mario Cristobal's Miami Hurricanes football team played Clemson and got blown out by the ACC dominant Tigers 40-10, Jim Larranaga's UM basketball team won in decisive fashion, once again proving the point that many have recently made: The University of Miami is now a basketball school.
Miami men’s basketball team defeated Providence by the score of 74-64 Saturday evening at Mohegan Sun Arena in its first game of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament.
The victory marked the 700th win of Miami head coach Jim Larrañaga’s illustrious career. The dominating win, in which his team led for 30-plus minutes against the reigning BIG EAST champions, came against his alma mater.
After Providence (3-1) took a 15-11 lead, Miami used separate 9-0 and 10-0 first-half runs to take early control, building its edge as high as 15 in the opening frame. The Hurricanes, behind 14 points from fourth-year junior guard Isaiah Wong, took a 12-point cushion, 38-26, into the locker room.
The Friars closed within six multiple times in the second session, but never got any closer. Fifth-year senior guard Jordan Miller banked in a 3-pointer with 5:48 left to cap an 8-0 run and make it 63-49. The Hurricanes’ advantage never dipped below double digits the rest of the way in the 10-point triumph.
Now, if only the UM football team could...oh, never mind.
Great win by the Hoopsters!

Nice win for the basketball team they are offto a great start.
Football.....boy what a loss. I told you they would kill us...the D saved some embarrassment as they had 3 takeaways in a row..it could have been 58-0..their QB cant say his name he is average at best...they are a good team....but they are not what they have had in the past...they are a top 10...not a peak team....but we are a bad team.....look at SC pounding UT....Beamers son coaching...they are not top team but not bad...look at that O Spencer Rattler throwing it around...nice plays....a modern offense..instead of half a yard first down incomplete 2nd down 2 yd run.third down..holding penalty...2 yd run.3rd.....punt...not real effective attack...

1. Yes, SC apparently knows how to score TDs and has proven that it is clearly not against the rules to do so.
2. The UM offense is horrible, atrocious, pitiful and painful to watch. They make scoring look like the NCAA made it illegal.

Larranaga for President!

USC vs UCLA nothing but a track meet.
Us a lead sled.

After last night, I feel like I'm a member of the UM version of the American Legion, an old guy sipping his beer and droning on about the Good Old Days University and how much better everything was 40 years ago.

Better solution to a teams’ on field issues and get back on track:
-Bye week to re-group, maybe get healthy?
Or
-Miami week to build your confidence and come out with a heisman font runner?
I’d vote UM week.
Playing Miami is better for your team than having a bye week.

I watch UM athletics to stay in touch and have pride in my alma mater. UM basketball and coach L fulfill that need. Fill the Watsco, you won’t regret it.

Didn't think Miami matched up too well against The Pimp's old school he played at, but they put together an excellent defensive stretch in each half to maintain control of the game once they started to finish defensive series with a strong rebounding effort from Omier and everyone else on the floor.
Maryland has even more size and will require an even better effort at preventing buckets in the paint today, getting the guards hot from behind the three point arc will be key to secure a victory this afternoon.
Pitt is about the same team they were last year winning the conference, just severely downgraded at QB and somewhat at WR, but make up for it with a workhorse RB to feed and lean on the clock with in 2022. Van Dyke playing, and finishing the game, would help immensely Miami's chances to win, but the line hasn't exactly protected well in pass protection yet this year so I don't expect them to start now. No bowl at least gives the staff extra recruiting time but whoever stays around for the 2023 roster needs those bowl practices so badly, so it's still a pressing need to get to .500 for the regular season to secure that extra month of development under direct staff supervision.

Yeah,
They need those practices to install a new offense, minus Gattis, like uptempo.

This year and next year will (likely) represent the worst Miami teams we'll see in the next couple of decades. I think next year's is at risk of being so bad due to roster attrition. We could easily see 30 players leave. Mario can bring in a number of portal players, but the rest will be true freshmen. Stack that on top of this year's class and you have a team that is really, really young.
The nightmare scenario is 50 odd players departing, and we end up going into next season with 60 players and 1997 Butch Davis conditions.

Be honest, do you really think that more "practice" is going to fix what is wrong with this team? They have been "practicing" all year and haven't gotten better at any phase of the game so...

If you saw QB Spencer Rattler and the South Carolina offense score 63, that's right 63 points, against the 9th ranked Tennessee Volunteers then you know what a college offense is supposed to look like. Hells bells, even Tennessee scored 38 in a losing effort.
#GattisMustGo
Posted by: 58 Straight | November 20, 2022 at 03:37 PM
There are a lot more questions than answers we just do not generate any strong sustained offense....we were lucky it wasnt 58-0...they turned it over and their QB was average....
what started out as such a positive outlook sure fell apart fast....I think recruiting is going to be very hard...gonna have decommits transfers....and honestly cant blame them....wht play this badly when you can go somewhere and shine
Lincoln Riley was the real coach available and USC got him...his qb came and he has put together a nice 10-1 season...that offense is humming....ours is broke down in the ditch....sad
Posted by: VA Cane | November 20, 2022 at 04:14 PM
No O Gattis for sure....hey anybody got the banner....we can rent the plane....its time to fly baby Fire Gattis!!!!!
Posted by: VA Cane | November 20, 2022 at 04:16 PM
Mario's mistake was thinking he was an Oline guru and taking mediocre Rpo futa and making them into a power spread minus a power back.
Taking a potential NFL QB, that was a blossoming very good Qb and turning him into a turd, with this suck azz awfence.
We are the worst offense in America and IF and that is A big if, he can keep this class together, we will be lucky to go 7-5 next year.
Steelers ain't getting a pass either, his every other game good defense, sucks too! I don't need to say anymore about Gattis except good effing riddance.
Posted by: HerbieIbis | November 20, 2022 at 06:56 PM
Yes the offense is really bad....just no production at all....D has tackling problems....its not a real good team right now. I think its going to be a rough couple years, and recruiting is going to be tough...a kid with a lot of potential has everyone recruiting him...why do you go to s suitor who has not had a contender in 19 years and is 5-7 6-6 at best....and playing in a mid December bowl? You probably do not...and certainly understandable why.

Return game is improved. So that's one identifiable phase. Considering that most problems on the team stem predominantly from three offensive line starters out with injury and a starter out with injury QB rotation between a true freshman project and a turnover machine who reads all their own headlines from high school, no it's not going to fix this team's problems, but, it will continue development for the core coming back to win more next year, so it's the way it will get better, nine months from now.

Next up for the portal is Elijah Robert's, DL.

Avery Huff to the Transfer Portal as well!
Posted by: Terrance M Sullivan | November 21, 2022 at 08:27 AM
I suspect TVD/Michael Rapaport is in the portal at some point....boy what a letdown. He started the season as a possible Heisman hopeful he was in the top 15...and sadly he is about as far removed from it as I am...and I do not blame the young man...he certainly did not come out firing on all cylinders and was over rated based on one season, but I feel for the young man...this offense and staff did not help him in any way, a really bad OL with all that has gone down....I cannot imagine him staying....he needs to find greener pastures. He has a lot of potential, but he really needs at least 2 strong seasons under a program that can truly develop him for the NFL....they are out there...name em...Bama OSU USC TN MI....lots of good teams would be better if he can recover from this disastrous season/program.. ..I think he would work well at Clemson and Dabo...they need a real QB not the guy with the odd name...he didnt show me much...
Its time for the season to be over...hell it was over after TAMU game....people do not care all around....players are sleep walking in all areas....cannot wait for the Pitt loss to come and end it for this year...sad but its come down to that but it may be for the best....everyone needs a break

Non Canes football...Saturday Stanford and Cal played, with Cal winning 27-20 it was the 40th anniversary of the play....The Bands On The Field....Sunday was the actual anniversary of it...but wow what a play...I recorded a E60 of it broke down....pretty cool play.... 2 things I took away...
1. After the game John Elway said the refs ruined my college career
2. Elway would not comment or participate in the film
What a cry baby loser he was and is....wahhhh...wouldnt play for Colts if drafted....and yea he might have won 2 SBs late,,,,he got his team drilled in 3 SBs....prima donna player....was great but to me...what a loser to not be able to say hey it happened it was a great part of CFB history....watch it...maybe make you feel better about the Canes...we had one against Duke too

Third worst offense in the last 25 seasons. A LOT of parallels with the 2007 squad.
Ironically, this was a significant improvement over manny’s 2020 and 2021 defenses, but still the seventh worst of the last 25 years.
Fifth time in six years that we are within one game of .500 after 12 games.
Posted by: TonyCane | November 21, 2022 at 08:02 PM
Tony,
Are u sure, it's the third worst because I sure don't ever remembering us to be this pathetic. U take out the Betty Cookman game and this has got to be the all time worse. I think a high
school team could of lucked into 100 yds.vs the Tigers.

Not looking good TC....been a very tough year and the outlook right now is somewhat bleak.
One can only hope for better days.
Posted by: VA Cane | November 21, 2022 at 10:04 PM
Statistically it is.
The 2006 and 2007 squads had barely scored 200 points eleven games in. Both were marred with a lack of bodies at wide receiver due to very poor recruiting. The 2022 version is somewhat more prolific. But generally very similar.
Posted by: TonyCane | November 22, 2022 at 12:18 AM
TC is always spot on....the keeper of the flame....or in this case.....a smoldering smoking badly damaged torch. We have had a really tough year, much worse than I think we expected.

Today's Middle Tennessee State ... the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. They just beat Argentina in the World Cup 2-1. Technology played a part. One of Argentina's first half goals was disallowed for offsides because digital technology (what they call video assisted referee:VAR) revealed the offensive player's elbow was closer to the goal than the defender.
Posted by: Old Skool | November 22, 2022 at 08:01 AM
Yeah, I remember those days, where we couldn't get WR's or QB's, not good ones anyway.

I am not a regular soccer watcher, but I do enjoy the level of competition for the WC. I really have enjoyed 2 days of soccer; it has been fantastic. I know Ohio Cane is a big soccer guy; hope he is enjoying it....I really have so far.
Yes we are in tough times and it is going to take a lot of work to get out of them.
Posted by: VA Cane | November 22, 2022 at 05:45 PM
Allan Haye, little used DL, to the portal next mth. If all goes as one would hope, those with less talent and/or less work ethic, or some combo thereof, would be heading out while depth gets built very gradually at a higher level. I feel bad for the hard working guys who just may not good enough for MC's view of the future. For those without the team first work ethic, that's different.
Posted by: JCane | November 22, 2022 at 11:25 PM
Haye was to short. More of a nose guard type.

I know it's been said already, but don't be surprised when this list of transfers hits 20-30 kids in the next month
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | November 23, 2022 at 11:27 AM
I agree OC...I think a lot of kids go....they dont think they will get a shot, and they are very disappointed in this season...many think there has to be a better place...I mean you could go to Alabama LAU TN...play on special teams or not play and be 9-2....5-6 or 5-7 is unacceptable to many...and thats us in a nutshell. At least the game is at Pitt...may be some Pitt fans there....home game may be a no show....I bet few people would show to see this team under perform
I still think TVD/Michael Rapaport is in portal after season

God bless you all....I wish each of you a very Happy Thanksgiving....enjoy your family and eat well....tune in to watch the U....I hope we can win the finale.

Nah, Van Dyke ain't going anywhere unless Gattis is back and that would be a toss up.
Lake making excuses up for Gattis because of all the injuries on the Oh line. How about devising a scheme that fits your personnel, instead of trying to make them something they are not.
Both coordinators need to hit the bricks, Yesterday.
This team had holes but they weren't a bunch of scrubs either, like what I watched. Van Dyke was like a deer in headlights in Gattis's offense.
It's a shame, it didn't have to be that way. Should of left well enough alone.
Posted by: HerbieIbis | November 23, 2022 at 07:37 PM
Agreed....not real good work on the Offense...and the OL.....I really like TVD...he has to be discouraged by this year...he needs to get healthy and get somewhere he can show his talent. I do not think he can do that here....but he is talented. MC really made some bad calls this first go round...hope he can do better with a full if ugly season under his belt...get rid of some coaches...let a bunch go to the portal...start over the right way!
