Miami Athletics captured first place in the annual NCAA Team Works Community Service Competition powered by Helper Helper, the NCAA announced Wednesday.
Miami earned the Division I award, with 100 percent of its 450-plus student-athletes participating in at least one community service activity. Pittsburgh and North Dakota finished second and third, respectively. This is the second time Miami has captured the NCAA Team Works Community Service Competition – the Hurricanes also took top honors in 2018.
“I am incredibly proud of our student-athletes and our student-athlete development staff for working together to win the NCAA Team Works Community Service Competition for the second time in four years,” Vice President/Director of Athletics Dan Radakovich said. “It speaks to the culture of service that lives here at UM, which our student-athletes have continually taken to heart.”
NCAA Team Works, which coordinates community service efforts at NCAA championships, and Helper Helper, a volunteer management and tracking platform, launched the community service competition to recognize student-athletes and schools who give back to their communities. This was the 10th year of the competition, which ran September 1 through December 15, 2022, and is based on the number of service hours completed and the number of participating student-athletes. Helper Helper tracks the school participation data throughout the competition.
Miami’s community service efforts during the 2022 Challenge included its Pen Pal program matching 86 student-athletes with students at local elementary schools; a Day of Giving when the football team delivered Thanksgiving meals to the Miami-Dade Foster and Adoptive Parent Association; an Operation Christmas Child drive for gifts to send to children in need overseas; and the swimming team giving free lessons for children at the South Miami Community Center.
“I am beyond proud of the work we have put into community service and student-athlete engagement here at the University of Miami,” said Shirelle Jackson, Executive Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development. “I am thrilled for our student-athletes, the communities we serve and our Canes Connect team. Our student-athletes continue to be receptive to our outreach opportunities, which has had an incredible impact on both our student-athletes and our surrounding communities.”
For schools that opted into the challenge, their total service hours were 218,594 hours, more than double last year’s total. The estimated economic impact of those service hours was $6.5 million, based on the calculation by the organization Independent Sector of the national value of a volunteer hour.

What a meltdown! UM blew a 9 point lead in 2.5 minutes for the loss!
Dang ‘canes…

Turned the ball over too much and didn't rebound well enough as a team to close this out.
Omier is getting the ball in good spots on the floor but not scoring enough due to not dropping his thighs horizontally to the floor enough while getting the ball up to bait defenders out position on shot fakes. That's really the one shortfall in his offensive game once he stopped getting over the back calls piled up on him.
On to Coral Gables.

Thanks Soupster too. Tough loss for our Canes. On to the next one. They are a tough team, playing for one another and the pride of our fabulous Hurricanes.
Hope all the Canespacers are well, happy, and loving our team and school.

I resigned from my job with the new home builder to pursue a better opportunity as a general real estate agent as I did for five years before working for the builder. I can now once again sell real estate in the entire State of Florida instead of one builder in one community. More options and opportunities and less micro management.
If you know of people wanting to relocate to Central Florida from the West, North, Northeast or Midwest please let me know. I am here to help!

He's struggling a bit being the first assignment defensively for the other team's priority to stop in the middle of the conference season this year, but, still on the late season watch list for player of the year. I know it's unlikely, but, he can still return for another year, own a bunch of program records, and make another solid run at being recognized as the best overall player in college basketball in 2024, if Wong wants to and his NIL rep doesn't start flapping their gums unauthorized again in John Ruiz's general direction . . .

I'd love to read something like this about the Canes. We seem to be radio silent or else the candidates have agents who are very close-lipped.
According to reports, the Tide will interview Washington Huskies, offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. The Huskies had the No. 2 offense in the country in 2022, averaging 516.2 yards per game. The Huskies also had the No. 7 scoring offense with 39.7 points per game.

Well, Mario taking his own sweet time is nauseous to The Herb. Study long, u study wrong.
Glad he got rid of that dud Gattis, just don't bring in another one. U took all that time bringing in coaches and to this point, aside from recruiting, what have they had to offer?
The down side of taking your time, is losing potential recruits. Why would a WR, like Harbor, come here not knowing what kind of offense u are going to run and I hope it ain't the QB looking at the side line, like a deer in headlights, getting the play call. Go fast or go home.
Not sold on this staff and if Mario effs up these next 2 hires and we get similar results, he's in a boat with no oars.
Realize this is only year 2 coming up but we had enough talent to win 9 games with that schedule last year.
We are still waiting on a down field play maker or 2. Still not much depth at safety. Need another QB, RB and beefy DT.
As it is right now, I can only see 7 or 8 wins. We can not afford to strike out at positions of need and keep relying on the portal.

Willie who?
Having to resort to the preferred walk on route to get us a WR, Patrick Steepleton from Cardinal Gibbons. 6'2 197. Had like 12 catches this past season. Got nothing to lose and maybe the proverbial under the radar guy.

Posted by: 58 Straight | January 31, 2023 at 06:52 PM
Not a great defensive effort overall, but a good job limiting second chances for the competition and Omier going 19 minutes in the 2nd half without being called for a fourth personal was a good sign. Casey closing out the first half being very active defensively bought some time for Pack to dial in the range later to provide the winning separation on the final margin.
On to Clemson, and the surprising game of the year for the season.

Former Ole Miss cornerback Davison Igbinosun announced Tuesday on social media that he will transfer to Ohio State. Igbinosun appeared in all 13 Rebels games as a freshman in 2022, with 10 starts at cornerback. Voters selected him as a Freshman All-American after he recorded 37 total tackles and five pass breakups last season.

Rashada announces he'll be signing with the Sun Devils. Call it his dream school. "Dream school" is now as empty a term as an executive saying "he wants to spend more time with his family" when he resigns due to malfeasance or scandal. In this case,"dream school" which team offered the most NIL money.

His first dream was to play in the SEC.
I wouldn't say all the recruiting work was done in the first signing date and now round 2 has come and no help added at WR or DT. Just like Mario, will patiently wait until May 1st thru the 15th.

Good luck always, Tom. Hope you continue to prosper year after year. As an aside, when and who did we play, when you picked me up at the airport and we tailgated with other Canes. Wonderful time, that I will always remember.❤️

From an SI article based on an interview with an NCAA vice president of enforcement
An inquiry into at least one school is further along than others. Investigators have been examining NIL-related deals at Miami since at least last June, when Hurricanes billionaire booster John Ruiz revealed to Sports Illustrated that NCAA officials had interviewed him. Investigators also interviewed others around the university that month, spending at least a few days in Coral Gables in what was believed to be the first serious inquiry into a college athletic department since the NCAA lifted rules in July 2021 that had prohibited athletes from earning compensation related to their likeness.

Kellen Winslow Jr trying to use football injuries as an excuse to get his 14 year sentence for forcible rape, rape of an unconscious person, assault with intent to commit rape, indecent exposure and lewd conduct in public reduced
He wrote:
“Petitioner contends he suffered physical trauma as a result from mild traumatic brian (sic) disorder, as well as potentially CTE. and this trauma was a contributing factor in the commission of the offense,” Winslow wrote by hand, referring to chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a disease associated with head trauma in football. “Petitioner now seeks a remand for resentencing based on AB 124. Petitioner argues because physical trauma contributed to the offenses … the court is required to impose the lower term (of the sentencing considerations).”

Want to cut down on the turnovers but another good job limiting second chance points this time on the road against a quality opponent in a hostile environment to stay unbeaten against top 25 ranked teams in a place that hasn't seen the home team drop one in a long while. Bench helped them land this one safely with some quality depth rotations letting Omier defend the four for a while during his minutes. Beverly being able to hold up this season and guard the three has been such a benefit they couldn't be sure they'd get but can't do without each game now.
One game off the lead now in the conference championship chase with the schedule about to lighten up is what you love to see ahead of you at this point! On to Coral Gables to play the refs and the visitors at the same time.

Kellen was sentenced in March of 2021. He's serving his time in a state prison in California
He played for the U from 2001, 2002 and 2003
He's famous for this quote
"It's war," Winslow said Saturday, his voice raised in the
locker room. "They're out there to kill you, so I'm out there to
kill them. We don't care about anybody but this U. They're going
after my legs. I'm going to come right back at them. I'm a ...
soldier."
The 14-year sentence was the result of a years-long legal battle after Winslow was accused of multiple rapes and sexual offenses committed against five women in Southern California. He was originally found guilty in 2019 of raping a 58-year-old homeless woman in San Diego, but the jury was deadlocked on six additional felonies.
Winslow subsequently pleaded guilty to raping an unconscious 17-year-old girl in 2003 and to sexual battery of a 54-year-old hitchhiker in 2018 and later revised the plea deal in a

Thanks Old Skool for the info on Kellen Winslow. I saw him play with Ken Dorsey and the gang at Syracuse. Such talent totally wasted.
He has a long prison term ahead of him. But, I hope he comes out as a changed man.
Great basketball game. Can’t believe that we beat Clemson! Such a balanced team. Who knows how far they can go! Now they come back home to Coral Gables!❤️
Thanks Canespacers for all the info. I love my Canes more and more, the older I get!❤️

Love How Down The Stretch Coach L was subbing our Players out Offense/Defense and getting our Best Free Throw Shooters on the Floor to ice the Game away! Excellent Game Day Coaching what an excellent concept and very refreshing! U want to win at a high level you have to recruit and game day coach! I know this will fall on deaf ears to the only thing that matters is recruiting crowd!
