The University of Miami men’s basketball team rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to take a four-point lead Saturday afternoon at PNC Arena, but dropped an 83-81 overtime decision against NC State.
Fourth-year junior guard Isaiah Wong paced No. 16/15 Miami (14-3, 5-2 ACC) with a game-high 25 points, including 18 after halftime.
“I thought that was a very entertaining college game. Both teams played very hard and, I’d say, very well, for the most part. It comes down to the overtime,” Miami head coach Jim Larrañaga said. “We just had too many turnovers for the game. We only have five assists with 17 turnovers. I would prefer the opposite.”
After the teams played evenly through 15-and-a-half minutes, NC State (14-4, 4-3 ACC) closed the frame on a 14-4 run to take a 42-32 lead into the locker room. Miami shot 56.0 percent (14-of-25) before the break, including start 10-of-15, but committed nine turnovers and forced just three.
The Hurricanes opened the second frame on an 8-0 run to pull within two, 42-40, with 17:43 to go. NC State countered with an 11-2 burst to go back ahead by nine, 53-44, just 2:20 later, but Miami answered right back with an 19-6 surge to go in front by four, 63-59, with 8:20 remaining.
The Wolfpack retook the edge, 65-64, exactly four minutes later after a 6-1 run, but Miami scored four points in a row to go up, 68-65, with 3:46 on the clock. NC State answered again, this time with an 8-2 burst to go up, 73-70, with 55 ticks left. Miami fifth-year senior guard Jordan Miller then drilled a game-tying 3-pointer with 27 seconds to go and the Hurricanes got a stop at the other end to force overtime.
Miami took an 81-78 edge with 2:13 on the overtime ticker, but NC State scored the next five points to go ahead by one, 82-81, with 30 seconds to go and added a free throw 18 seconds later to double the advantage. It then forced a turnover at the other end to claim the home win.
Cam McCormick has apparently committed. Former Oregon tight end looks to spend his 8th and 9th years at the U. Probably going to have a nickname like 'Medicare'.At this point he's probably considered a resident coach.

That’s a tough way to end the NFL season. The Dolphins could challenge any team in the AFC with a QB like Aaron Rodgers or a “one and done” Tom Brady. Lamar Jackson or any of the Niners QB’s would suffice as well.
It’s now or never…
Go Dolphins!

This is from Dmoney over at Canesinsight:
- I was told on Wednesday that the timetable for staff changes was ten days (by end of this week). This is my educated guess, but that tells me Mario wants to completely close the initial talent acquisition window before moving on to staff changes. As I've said for months, I expect significant changes including a new offensive coordinator and QB coach.
- One thing to keep in mind with the Transfer Portal- even with the best preparation, it is more unpredictable and haphazard than HS recruiting. Visits are often an opportunity for staffs to evaluate the players, and vice versa. Issues with credits transferring and the NCAA's new contact periods (which doesn't match with every school's enrollment calendar) have disrupted a couple recruitments. Miami has been aggressive in pursuing players but is being mindful not to settle for inferior talents. Remember, our two best Portal acquisitions last year (Akheem Mesidor and Darrell Jackson) committed in April. Miami will continue to pursue a big body DT in the Portal.
- Miami will continue to pursue a transfer RB. FAU's Larry McCammon was very interested in Miami but could not transfer certain credits, which led to his return to FAU.
- I expect Miami to be a factor for Alabama WR Tyler Harrell if his foot checks out. I will post an update on Gary Bryant once I get it.
- I don't think Miami is done at LB. They will pursue another transfer there if the right name presents itself.
- Iowa transfer Terry Roberts remains in the mix. If Miami takes him, don't be surprised if it's at safety.
- Miami fans are underrating Purdue transfer DT Branson Deen. His commitment came at a time when fans were expecting news on a big DT, a new OC or a WR name, so I get the distraction. But after watching him against Michigan and Penn State, this is a twitchy, high-motor player who made plays against big OL. He had 34 pressures last year against the best and biggest OLs in America. For comparison, Leonard Taylor had 25 against worse competition.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 16, 2023 at 09:35 AM
Well, supposedly we added a player from Duke at LB named Rocky Shelton. Dude hasn't played in 2 years, so I don't get the take unless it is as a walk on.
He was at Duke for 5 years and his last stats were in 2020.
As far as changes go, we can only hope, Mario does the right thing, at least on Awfense.

Ed Reed complaining about the trash at Bethune Cookman 😳
“I’m waking out here with the football team picking up trash. I should leave, I’m not even under contract yet !”
“Theses MFs didn’t even clean my office when I got here !”
Posted by: Old Skool | January 16, 2023 at 11:06 AM
Ed's apology:
"In regards to my social media and comments about the University, staff and other institutions, I would like to sincerely apologize to all BCU staff, students and alumni for my lack of professionalism," he said (via HBCU Gameday)." My language and tone were unacceptable as a father, coach and leader. My passion for our culture, betterment and bringing our foundation up got the best of me and I fell victim while engaging with antagonists on social media as well. I am fully aware of the hard working folks at our school who are also fighting to make things better and more financially sound. I am encouraged from my communication with my AD and our administration and understand it's a work in progress. My passion is about getting and doing better and that goes for me too."

Got to say, you can easily see which side of the ball Ed Reed played on. He went on offense for 3 sentences then spent 6 sentences playing defense. In other words, he still knows how to swivel those hips and backpedal.

Dolphins played a good game; a lot better than expected with injuries, third string QB, injuries, and a bad case of the drops! I Think MM did a pretty good job all year seeing he was a rookie and he had challenges. They had a chance to win; their game clock/time management in general was poor. The end of the game was horrific play calling time management and it cost them the opportunity to win; they very well could have. I do think they are going to need a QB; love Tua, but he cannot remain the QB too many concusses he will not last much longer. He and the dolphins need to own up to his history of injuries and concussions and he should retire while he is still alive!!!!
Derek Carr would fit nicely if they can afford him and keep people.
Remember, as I always say fundamentals win games lack of them lose games. Clock/time management are critical fundamentals. Dolphins need to work on them much harder!!! I wanted them to win and they were close!!!
Hoops guys lets get back to winning; dropped 2 of last 3! Lets get ready for Syracuse tonight!!!! On ACCN...lets go lets win!!!!

Frank Ponce gone.
Back to App State
Posted by: Old Skool | January 16, 2023 at 06:57 PM
Well, that's a start. Don't know how good Ponce would of been as an OC but The QB's regressed. Now, it probably was the scheme that set us back but this whole situation was effed up from the start. We Ned an OC that is also the QB coach and dam sure need someone who can coach and Recruit WR's.

Great individual effort by Omier and overall team effort on both the offensive and defensive glass to win the rebound battle last night which helped Miami survive a giant game from Syracuse's center. Orange really exploited the guard match up they could isolate in the block to stay in it, until Popular and Beverly, even more so, said enough of that weak crap defensively, which allowed the Hurricanes to pull back in to striking position in the second half, so credit to the coaching staff managing Wong's first half foul situation properly to be able to adjust at halftime on that end of the floor as well as buy some time staunching the bleeding until they could start hitting threes at a decent rate thanks to Pack's hot streak from back there in order to secure a win. Syracuse got away with a lot of contact in the first half uncalled I thought, and when the fouls began to even out in the last 40 minutes they quickly ended up in penalty totals on infractions which allowed UM to shoot 11 more and make 11 free throws as a team, which was the difference in the game.
Onto Duke, they need a solid win against a ranked team to save a season beginning to spiral away from their preseason predictions for it so UM will have to beat both them and the ACC refs again Saturday.

Just the tip of the iceberg with staff changed, I believe. Mario won't sit on coaches he doesn't believe in like some of our HC's in the past.

staff changes**
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 17, 2023 at 09:47 AM
There’s no question that Coach L makes great halftime adjustments, but I wish we wouldn’t spot our opponents 10 points in the first half of nearly every game.

From Gaby at 247: Miami offered St. Louis (MO) Christian Brothers Top247 WR Jeremiah McClellan. Interesting thing is that wide receiver analyst David Cooney appears to be on the road and offered him
That's interesting because Cooney would have to be a position coach, I believe, to be "on the road" recruiting. He might've been promoted to WR coach?

QB Jake Garcia to enter the transfer portal

I wonder if he's talking to Lashlee
Posted by: Old Skool | January 17, 2023 at 05:50 PM
Here's a big name OC who'll likely be looking for a job soon: Bucs OC Byron Leftwich.
Tampa Bay was last in the NFL in rushing yardage and rushing attempts and suffered one of the biggest declines on offense in league history, going from 61 touchdowns in 2021 to 31 in 2022.
Nonetheless, this is an OC who's won a Super Bowl
Would he be a good fit.. don't know,
Interested in coaching college .. don't know
Posted by: Old Skool | January 17, 2023 at 06:04 PM
I'd prefer no one from the NFL as an OC. Most those dudes hate to recruit.
Posted by: Herbieibis | January 17, 2023 at 06:48 PM
With only analysts at UM with visitors like Gary Bryant, visiting WR, and welcoming incoming recruits, kinda says that Gattis is on the way out without much to think about.

Interesting topic for an article
The average star ratings for NFL All Pro Players this year is 4.5 stars on defense and 2.0 starts on offense. Why the disparity? Are offensive evaluations that hard to make?
Good luck reading it. It's behind a firewall in The Athletic

I agree, but to do so would require collective bargaining with players. Which would require a college football player's union.
One remote end around to the entire thing would be for national legislation limiting the earning of students attending college (players / non players). Basically a "Focus On Your Studies" maximum wage law. You could set the "cap" at $150K. That would curtail the NIL deals and return to status quo to pre 2021, where houses, equipment, and bags were key drivers to some elite recruits making their decisions. All of course ignored, depending on the school, by the NCAA.
On another note, Miami is still in it for five star athlete Nyckoles Harbor. That said, he's visiting none other than Buffalo this weekend.
Posted by: TonyCane | January 21, 2023 at 12:18 PM
Got handled on the rebounding glass, Duke's a tough place to play, have to beat the team on the floor and the ACC refs making sure to not whistle anything to keep the free throw disparity at least equal if not slanted off the visiting side of the scoreboard as well. Miami shot too poorly from the field overall to pull off the upset and Duke's length and the officiating letting them get away with almost all contact as needed in situations was too much to overcome.
On, to Tallahicksville.

That last possession when UM had an opportunity to tie the game may be one of the most frustrating I’ve ever watched. They got 4-5 rebounds and couldn’t finish. Damn…

Easy Ed Reed won't be coaching Betty Cookman. They now don't want him.
Harbor is a lonnnng shot.
I guess will have to wait until May or June to get any help at WR.
Posted by: Herbieibis | January 21, 2023 at 02:34 PM
Sounds like a money/funding issue
Ed Reed posted Saturday morning on his Instagram account that “after weeks of negotiations” he “has been informed” that Bethune-Cookman University “won’t be ratifying my contract and won’t make good on the agreement we had in principle, which had provisions and resources best needed to support the student athletes.
