The fifth-seeded University of Miami men’s basketball team defeated fourth-seeded Indiana, 85-69, Sunday night at MVP Arena to claim a second consecutive Sweet 16 appearance.
Fourth-year junior guard Isaiah Wong scored a game-high 27 points for No. 16/15 Miami (27-7, 15-5 ACC) to help the team defeat No. 21/19 Indiana in a top-25 NCAA Tournament second-round showdown.
The Hurricanes jumped out to an 8-0 lead after just 2:13, connecting on four straight field goals after an opening miss. That helped Miami build an early 10-point edge, 13-3, after only 4:02, as it started 6-of-8 from the floor and Indiana (23-12, 12-8 B1G) opened just 1-of-6.
Aided by back-to-back 3-pointers, the Hurricanes extended their lead to 13 points, 28-15, with 9:52 on the first-half clock. The Hoosiers then scored 10 straight points in 99 seconds to close within three, 28-25, with 7:17 left in the frame. Miami countered with a 10-3 run, including eight points by Wong, to go back up by double digits, 38-28, with 3:05 to go.
Indiana eventually scored the final five points of the frame, including a buzzer-beating corner 3-pointer by fifth-year senior forward Miller Kopp, to make it 40-35 at the break. Miami shot 55.2 percent (16-of-29) in the opening 20 minutes and notched an 8-2 margin in fast-break points.
The Hoosiers scored the opening eight points after halftime and, after never leading in the first half, gained their first advantage with 18:37 to go and upped it to 43-40 with 17:42 left. Miami, though, quickly recovered and soon logged a 16-2 surge in 4:49—it scored nine straight points in just 2:05 to end it—to go back up by a dozen, 63-51, with 8:15 remaining.
Indiana closed back within seven, but never got any closer. Miami eventually drilled back-to-back 3-pointers in the closing minutes to go up by 15 points, 75-60, with 3:26 to play. Although the Hoosiers made back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers, the Hurricanes continued to score at the other end, making their final seven shots and scoring the last eight points to win by 16 points, their largest margin of the night.
Miami finished with a 48.6 percent (34-of-70) clip from the field, including a 39.1 percent (9-of-23) ledger from 3-point range. The Hurricanes posted a dominant 48-31 margin on the glass and compiled more offensive rebounds (20) than Indiana had defensive rebounds (19). Head coach Jim Larrañaga’s team totaled a 29-11 cushion in second-chance points, 14-0 tally in bench points and a 46-28 ledger in paint points.
Wong’s 27-point performance, good for the co-fourth-most by a Hurricane in the NCAA Tournament, came on a 9-of-17 shooting from the field, including a 4-of-6 mark from deep, along with a perfect 5-of-5 line on free throws. The ACC Player of the Year also grabbed eight rebounds in the win.
Fifth-year senior guard Jordan Miller amassed 19 points on 9-of-16 shooting, adding five rebounds and two blocks. Third-year sophomore guard Nijel Pack, an Indianapolis native playing against his home state school, scored 12 points in the win. Third-year sophomore forward Norchad Omier scored seven points and pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds to break the program’s NCAA Tournament single-game record he set two days prior and post the top total by a Hurricane in any regulation game since November 2018.
Fourth-year junior forward Trayce Jackson-Davis, a First Team All-American, paced the Hoosiers with 23 points, eight rebounds and five blocks, finishing 7-of-10 from the field and 9-of-11 at the line. Freshman guard Jalen Hood-Schifino scored 19 points, but Miami held him to 8-of-22 shooting, including a 3-of-11 clip from deep. Redshirt senior forward Race Thompson added 11 points.
Up next for Miami, which led for 33-plus minutes in Sunday’s victory, is a matchup with top-seeded Houston, ranked No. 2/1 nationally, Friday at 7:15 p.m. at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo., live on CBS.

Great weekend for the kids and coach L...they have had a great season so far and there is no quit. Houston is a fine team...a tough draw but we have to think we can play with them and beat them.
I have always taken The Dale Earnhardt approach to competing, winning and being a champion!!!!
"If you're not a race driver, stay the hell home. Don't come here and grumble about going too fast. Get the hell out of the race car if you've got feathers on your legs or azz. Put a kerosene rag around your ankles so the ants won't climb up and eat that candy azz.”
We take them on, head on...we go out there to win!!!! Any other approach is unacceptable. 40 years ago, NC State took them on and beat them under impossible odds...nobody thought they could win...but they did!!!!
I was 24 and there were 30 of my good friends gathered at a buddies house. We had cases of beer and were wild raising hell. They won...we still had cases...nobody made it to work the next day we all crashed there!!!!!
They were champions...we can be champions!!!
Go Canes we are proud of the team!!!!!

SWEET 16 is SO sweet!
Coach L has solidified his rep - no more barking about him allowed!
Houston will be tough. I like our odds though. Matchups are decent.

It's good for the new generations of UM students to get a taste of national relevance in a major Canes sport. The fact that they play in an on campus arena (an electric one at that during big games) just adds to the great experience a UM sporting event can be.
Watching the Canes competing at the highest levels in the Madness of late March is as good as it gets. It only makes one hungrier for a successful football program (and more Omaha appearances for the baseball team!). Let's hope Coach L's success motivates the others at Hecht to raise the bar.

Not to take anything from the outstanding season for both the men’s and women’s teams
Posted by: KYcane | March 22, 2023 at 03:28 PM
Well KYcane, we still need a down field WR and we still need another Big bodied DT but other than that they've had 5 practices. Taylor, Mesidor, Harvey and Hunt all not participating.

I'm tired of posting about or reading about Greentree all stars during the spring, only to have most of them not show up when it's live. "Show me in the fall" is the way I'm looking at it

Tough games tomorrow, for sure. But, so exciting.

Poplar is still not cleared yet for the game, they will not be able to win without him available to defend the wing and playing well offensively, even if his minutes are somewhat reduced and the leftovers entrusted to Beverly since he's now the one with the healthier back between them . . .

Great team win dragging the final #1 seed into a race to 80 game and lighting up a good defensive roster as a team. Hope they keep enjoying shooting on the rims in Kansas City as much as they did tonight in the biggest game in program history Sunday.

Texas is a little banged up in the front court, which makes the match up for them unfavorable enough that 4.5 points is too many to be favored by over Miami at this juncture, for me. They don't mind trying to get out and run so dragging them into a half court execution contest may be where they're most vulnerable to an upset at least from the style point of view.
Program is playing on a giant pile of house money at this point anyway . . .
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | March 25, 2023 at 08:18 AM
Any Spacers going to the Spring game?
Posted by: UMike | March 25, 2023 at 03:13 PM
I guess the question truly is, OGV, who isn't playing with house money at this point. All #1s have been knocked out. Several remaining teams don't have the appearance of being s hoops that should be there, like SDSU and FAU, but keep winning. For UM the problem is the toughest teams are right in front of them, like Texas and maybe UConn (if...), but this team seems to feel like they belong, as opposed to last year's group that seemed excited just to be there (yes, an overstatement). Coach L is as good a game day manager as any coach still standing. Although I think Texas probably wins this game more often than loses, I think the Canes are going to be very tough to beat if they avoid further injury. A win would truly be beyond exciting. Can't wait to see them play tomorrow. Fwiw, ESPN reseeding the last 8 puts UConn 1, Texas 2 and UM 5. Guessing a 5 seed at this juncture would be further locker room material.

On the diamond, Canes beat FAU midweek but got blasted on the road at Wake yesterday, 11-0.
Posted by: JCane | March 25, 2023 at 04:23 PM
West region final feature two teams that must win to not consider the season a failure, and it's going to shed blue blood at the end. Texas is the biggest favorite in the regional final games and the seeding held up until this game for them in their region, they can't lose this and consider this season a success no matter how insane their coach's marriage was or is. Kansas State can't lose their regional final to a #9 seed minor conference opponent and consider this season a successful one, though compared to preseason expectations they probably are the closest team to sitting on top of a house money pile in the other regionals without playing on the bank's chips yet at this point in the tournament. South regional final is the Cinderella Ball this year.
So only the teams from Florida, way southern California and Nebraska are where the piles are for now at the respective table seats.
