For the second time in program history, a member of the University of Miami men’s basketball team is the ACC Player of the Year, as Isaiah Wong claimed the award Monday night.
Wong joins 2012-13 honoree Shane Larkin in program record books. He also received First Team All-ACC distinction, becoming the second Hurricane, alongside Jack McClinton, to earn three postseason All-ACC honors.
In addition, Jordan Miller claimed Second Team All-ACC plaudits and Norchad Omier garnered Third Team All-ACC accolades. This is the third time three Hurricanes have earned first-, second- or third-team status in the same year, including just the third time in the ACC era, alongside 2015-16, 2012-13 and 2001-02 (BIG EAST).
“I am so proud of all three of our All-ACC honorees. Isaiah, Jordan and Norchad have all had amazing impacts on the court and in the locker room,” Miami head coach Jim Larrañaga said. “They are tremendous basketball players who helped lead us to a share of the ACC regular season title, as well as fantastic representatives of both our program and our University.
“I want to especially commend Isaiah on winning ACC Player of the Year, an award he most certainly deserves. He is one of the hardest-working players I have ever coached and I am overjoyed for him to receive this recognition.”
A fourth-year junior guard, Wong received 30 votes for ACC Player of the Year, seven more than second-place Tyree Appleby of Wake Forest. His 337 points in All-ACC balloting also led all players, putting him 13 above second-place Armando Bacot of North Carolina. Wong, Larkin and James (1998-99) are the only Hurricanes to win conference player of the year in any league, with James doing so in the BIG EAST.
The Piscataway, N.J., native is the fourth First Team All-ACC designee in program history, joining Kameron McGusty, McClinton (2007-08 and 2008-09) and Larkin (2012-13). He is the sixth Hurricane, regardless of league, to earn first-team status, as Tim James (1997-98 and 1998-99) and Johnny Hemsley (1998-99) did so when Miami was in the BIG EAST. Additionally, Wong, McClinton (2007-09), James (1997-99) and Darius Rice (2002-04) are the only three-time all-league honorees in any conference in program history, with the latter two doing so in the BIG EAST.
The 6-foot-4, 184-pounder is averaging team highs in points (15.9), assists (3.4) and steals (1.4) per game. He is also third on the team in rebounding (4.4), while shooting 44.2 percent from the floor, 38.1 percent beyond the arc and 82.9 percent at the line.
Wong owns the highest single-game point total in the league this year (36 vs. Cornell on 12/7/22) and is a two-time ACC Player of the Week. He ranks sixth in the ACC in made free throws (121), eighth in steals per game and free-throw percentage, co-eighth in 20-point games (nine), No. 11 in points per game, No. 13 in field-goal percentage and No. 14 in assists per game.
A fifth-year senior guard, Miller is just the eighth Hurricane to receive first- or second-team All-ACC status, joining Wong, McClinton, Larkin, McGusty, Sheldon McClellan (2015-16), Kenny Kadji (2012-13) and Guillermo Diaz (2005-06 and 2004-05). Only four others—James, Rice, Johnny Hemsley (1998-99 and 1999-200) and John Salmons (2000-01)—did so in the BIG EAST era. Miller finished ninth in All-ACC balloting with 148 points.
Hailing from Middleburg, Va., Miller is averaging 15.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.3 steals per game, all second-best on the team, in a Miami-high 34.5 minutes per outing. He is shooting 54.0 percent overall, second-best among Hurricanes, as well as 35.4 percent on 3-pointers and 80.0 percent from the stripe. He owns two double-doubles, four 20-point showings and a co-team-high 27 double-digit scoring performances, including 24 in a row, this season.

Informative Lifewallet spokesman Pack should have been 3rd team allacc point guard, Omier no lower than 2nd team allaccc at the lowest, due to his field goal shooting percentage. In the NIL era returning for another year as the ACC player of the year and Wooden award finalist is the more lucrative play than latter first round rookie contract draft choice money even, depending on where the tax laws end up applying in the nation? It would be nice. Capel mastering the off season transfer market for players even more efficiently this offseason than even Larranaga's staff, then Capel's ability to keep effective net scoring rotations on the floor way more often compared to where he was last year in that regard earned him that final ballot margin legitimately I feel. The deeper depth on the bench is a nice bonus to enjoy this postseason compared to last for the team though, so runner up is just about right in coach of the year considerations.

Free throws today, Wong missing 8 of 10 layups last week, going cold at the end of games with double digit leads, something’s gotta give! This team has everything they need to be a force, they just need to do it every time they hit the court! There is no tomorrow!

Here's your Omier update, even a "mild" sprain of an ankle averages a recovery time between three, at the fewest, to five at the most, weeks.
Sunday the injury occurred so if the training team is competent, they iced his ankle as constantly as possible until Monday night around 7:15pm then transitioned to strengthening and warm compress focused healing inducing treatment on the area. Moderate graded sprains average treatment recovery windows between four to six weeks, severe 12 to 24 weeks, three to six months.
We're going to grade him out of severe due to the xray being negative and him returning to the bench to watch the rest of the semifinal game. So that leaves moderate to mild. If he's moderately sprained, his game time decision is going to likely be a no, since he'll have 25% of the needed recovery time at a minimum and the risk of reinjury will be too high. If he got lucky and ended up with a mild sprain, he's probably going to try and tough it out because Nicaragua loves alpha male behavior as a culture, but he'll only have 33% of the recovery window needed to treat the injury in the most mild common cases, so you figure he'll be playing hurt and his effectiveness will be questionable, much less if he can finish the game with his usual around 30 minutes of starter rotation appearances.
There's a chance he's inserted to the lineup off the bench and has his minutes severely limited, 15-20 at the most, but, there's a better chance he misses the first round game and has about a 50/50 shot at the game against maybe Indiana if the seeding holds up to round two. Same type of thing happened to UM's 1999 basketball team, Tim James got hobbled with a back injury heading into the tournament and toughed it out at a reduced capacity but the rest of the team couldn't take up the slack in the postseason leading to an early exit.
It was also so amazingly reassuring to discover that the ACC refs went to the replay to whistle in extra fouls on the competition more than enough to make sure a team from North Carolina won a tournament played in the same state while getting the combined fouls ratio'd out to 50-47 over three rounds of games in their favor, good thing they took expert care with that, instead of getting fair TV market value for broadcast rights, got to keep the league priorities in order once the preseason #1 team crapped the bed after all. Foul shots in the three rounds ended up in the North Carolina team playing in the same state's favor 63 to 59, shocking I know. Good thing the fan club presidents with the striped shirts and whistles got that league memo once Pitt took that blowout with a foul disparity and free throw advantage.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | March 14, 2023 at 10:14 AM
I remember reading here a study that analyzed the referee decisions of all leagues, and only in the ACC were apparent biases made not in favor of teams likely to win the league championship and compete for national titles, but for blue blood founders regardless of record. The ACC referees would rather a 6-6 North Carolina win the ACC title against a 11-1 Boston College. If it costs BC a chance at the national title, so be it. The price to pay for North Carolina to be ACC champions.
It’s apparent attitudes like this that lead to undervalued ACC TV rights.

Instead of deep diving old musty useless star rankings, on a site that changes them depending on which fan base sends them the most monthly subscribers, for players who have hung up their cleats at every level for years now, dig that up instead for old times sake. If you go back and look at articles about the ACC when they expanded with Pitt/BC/Syracuse, you'll see concern trolling pieces about how "it hurts basketball." As if a basketball league is the ideal collegiate top tier sports league to want to emulate or something, so dumb. Or if basketball is so wounded by losing a league date, they can't out of conference schedule it anyway to avoid the sting, like Wake and UNC did exactly so in football a few seasons ago? Really revealed the media narrative hand there, wonder who primed them with a hand up their backside to make their lips move that way . . .
Gary Ferman had a wet diaper episode over Oregon getting robbed of a win by a ref crew in pac12, at the time, play in the 2021 football season too I recall recently, but I'm not watching that league churn through yet another defenseless season to bother to watch to see if it was a real gripe or just begging for refs to help programs past the finish line in individual games for ulterior motives. It is much easier for the zebra's to shift basketball outcomes and final margins than it is for even their usual useless acc crew stand ins in football are capable of doing, though they can certainly make that happen there too, I won't dispute that fact.
I only expect UM to hold on in a first round nail biter barely then if the seeding holds up, that's where they'll be out one and done. This would qualify as a good season to me despite the tough post season breaks. Omier was on the court yesterday shooting, didn't run or jump. Everyone but Jordan Miller has a covid year to play remaining at least eligibility-wise. Would be really nice to bring back the entire core and find someone to go bigger at the 4 or 5 with in 2024.

That was definitely some “home cooking”! Southern home cooking to be exact. I think UM would fare better in the Big10 vs the SEC or the ACC.

With a two-point lead and under 15 seconds remaining in the game, Cavaliers guard Kihei Clark was trapped by two Furman guards when he hurled the ball towards halfcourt, where it was intercepted by a Furman defender. The Paladins promptly hit the go-ahead three pointer to win the game.

Didn't play their best but a gutty team win and comeback tonight. Omier's double double was the stuff legit legends are made of, epic performance by him, what a player.
Maybe the seeding falls apart in the rest of the Midwest like it has in the other brackets, hope they shoot better as a team overall in round 2.

Somehow pulled it out. Likely match-up with IU next, with winner drawing winner of 9Auburn vs 1Houston. Amazing thing is Auburn gets that game in Birmingham, so it will be as close to a home game as they can get. For those forgetting last year, Auburn was a 2 seed and UM blew them out in the 2nd half. I don't see the U getting past the next game if the shooting lights don't come back on. Hope W9ng finds himself. Kudos to Omier.

Duke forgot to get the league to pack the fan club presidents with the whistles and stripes this trip to Florida again. What a shock they fouled almost 2 to 1 this crew instead of keeping the streak running.

Lady Canes pull out a crazy one, coming back from a 17 point halftime deficit to hold on late with the 1 point win. As a 9 seed, they advance to play the 1 seed next, who happens to also be Indiana. Tough draw, but part of advancing, and a whole lot better draw than getting South Carolina, like they did last year.
Hopefully the men take down IU tomorrow night.
Posted by: JCane | March 18, 2023 at 05:37 PM
How Pack and Joseph hold up defensively against IU's taller guards is going to tell the tale as long as Omier has continued to improve his injury condition with no setbacks in the last few days. They're going to want to go big and slow the game down when they do, so if Miami can be the hunter and speed the pace with some easy scores off live turnovers, maybe . . .
They're playing with house money now regardless.

Another great team win. Got to shoot better at the free throw line next weekend, I thought the refs let Indiana get away with a lot of uncalled contact though as well. The seeding held up in the rest of the regional bracket sadly, but hopefully with some injury luck the rest of the way UM can add to the #1 seed removal in this tournament too. A great season to be a Hurricane basketball fan! Only Miami is left in this thing for the conference, fittingly I'd say.
