I Wonder Who Big Dan R will hire to be our Next Skipper of our Miami Hurricanes Baseball Team?

TonyCane

Good question on the next coach.

Turning to football, with Freeney signing that brings the 2023 class to an incredible 38 commitments (37, when you factor Jackson’s release from his LOI). Miami signed SEVEN cornerbacks in this class and technically now has 12 on the roster. I’m imagining one or two will get moved to safety, where we are pretty thin.

Herbieibis

Doesn't it seem when u get one leak plugged another pops up. It's always one or two positions that we are thin at. Like DT's. I think we have brought in 2 the last two cycles and one of those was a flip job.
Got to win. We got enough talent to get to 9 or 10 wins, as long as coaching does it's job and Van stays healthy.

Terrance Sullivan

Total Agreement Herb!

Herbie...seems like DT and WR are where we need the most help, still.

Lots of info from Gaby Urrutia:

Miami hosted one of the most important official visit weekends in program history and by all accounts it was a success. Here is some juice regarding the current weekend and some others coming through that the Hurricanes are feeling good about.

- The first sign of that success came on Saturday night when Theodore (Ala.) four-star linebacker Cameron Pruitt went public with his decision to commit to the Hurricanes. He may not be the last to end up in the class.

- Miami is trending for Las Vegas Bishop Gorman Top247 tight end Elija Lofton coming out of the weekend and I like the Hurricanes to be the pick whenever he announces his decision. I wouldn’t be shocked if some sort of announcement gets scheduled in the coming days. If things do materialize that way, that would be good news for Cody Woodiel and Miami and a big win over Texas.

Two more names to track at tight end outside of the known group (Amir Jackson and Caleb Odom) are Hiram (Ga.) Top247 tight end Walter Matthews and Chillicothe (Ohio) Top247 tight end Tayvion Galloway, an LSU commit who is giving Miami a real look. I wouldn’t be surprised to see either or both on campus this month.

- There is reason to feel good about where things stand with Washington (DC) Friendship Academy five-star EDGE Dylan Stewart. The Hurricanes and Georgia may be battling it out here but I think Miami has as good of a shot as anyone to land one of the nation’s top pass rushers.

- It also sounds like Miami made a move with Duncanville (Texas) five-star EDGE Colin Simmons. He probably wouldn’t be the one to kick the party off but if one of these other elite guys have jumped on board, Simmons would be more enticed to make the move. I think the Hurricanes should be viewed as legitimate contenders. His feedback after the visit was legitimate after checking in with some close to things.

- I also get the sense that Miami is in a very good spot with Santa Ana (Cali.) Mater Dei five-star defensive lineman Aydin Breland. There is a lot to track in that recruitment but I believe Miami is in that top tier for the nation’s No. 2 defensive lineman.

- Intel coming out of the weekend suggests that Bradenton IMG Academy five-star defensive lineman David Stone enjoyed the visit, but it’s tough to get a read on what he wants to do. Miami could try to get him back later in the process if he remains undecided long-term. They feel like this is going to be a recruitment that goes the distance regardless of what happens this summer.

- Texas A&M leads on the Crystal Ball for Bradenton IMG Academy defensive lineman TJ Lindsey, who is an impressive body type and athlete. Some around the program believe Lindsey is a high level athlete with legitimate size. Still, there is a sense that the Aggies lead.

- Daytona Beach (Fla.) Mainland Top247 defensive lineman LJ McCray said today that he’s in no rush to make a decision and after checking in early Sunday afternoon, that’s a sentiment shared by Miami. There is a feeling that he does really like the Hurricanes but is going to go through the process.

- College of San Mateo (Cali.) cornerback Sione Laulea really enjoyed his Miami visit. Mario Cristobal built a great relationship with the staff at that Northern California powerhouse junior college program from his time at Oregon and that has given the Hurricanes an in there. Jahmile Addae also has a close friend on staff. USC and Oregon will get official visits over the next two weekends, but Penn State may be the program who poses the biggest threat to Miami.

- If Miami wants to flip Bradenton IMG Academy five-star cornerback Ellis Robinson IV from Georgia, they’re going to have to win this fall. That’s my best read on that situation.

- Miami likes Bradenton IMG Academy Top247 running back Jerrick Gibson a lot, but I’m really watching Tuscaloosa (Ala.) Top247 running back Kevin Riley and this upcoming visit this weekend. Some familiar with the situation believe Miami is in a very good spot there and they wouldn’t hesitate to take the talented tailback if things started trending that way.

- Severn (MD) Archbishop Spalding linebacker Keyshawn Flowers is a name Miami likes but the focus right now appears to be on locking in Cornelius (NC) William Amos Hough four-star linebacker James Nesta, who did go to North Carolina this weekend for an official visit. Miami would like to keep him away from Oklahoma and there is some confidence in where the Hurricanes are at there.

If that becomes the reality, Miami would turn to working hard on Salem (Va.) Top247 linebacker Chris Cole, and likely go all in on trying to flip Largo (Fla.) Top247 linebacker Adarius Hayes from Florida.

- It’s tough to get a read on Aiken (SC) Top247 wide receiver Braylon Staley, but Miami and Tennessee appear to be two schools in serious contention for a commitment. A decision may not be that far off.

- If I were putting together a group on Miami’s next commitment, Elija Lofton, James Nesta, Kevin Riley, and Justin Scott would be near the top of the list. Miami is going to go on a nice run here this summer and I wouldn’t be surprised to see some of those names listed in the class.

- I also feel like Miami likes where they’re at with Chicago (Ill.) Kenwood Academy Top247 EDGE Marquise Lightfoot, especially if somebody like Justin Scott jumps on board.

Are there any college baseball teams that actually play in a domed ballpark and couldn't play outdoors if they were in the cancelled baseball championship event as a host site? Don't follow the sport but have literally never seen a game played in a dome that I can ever recall?

Ohio_Cane

From Dmoney at CIS:

This was a huge weekend and it went very well. Here is the latest on this week's visitors:

- Let me start with a disclaimer, before we get to the good stuff. This isn't the old days where you wait for a flurry of commitments after a big weekend. Big-time kids and their teams know their value and understand the leverage of visits. Here is the good news: Miami is still playing the NIL game in a major way and we're developing strong bonds between the players, the staff and the school through multiple visits. But everyone should understand there is more strategy involved these days, on both sides. This will all play out over time.

- If NSD were today, I would feel very good about Miami's chances with DE Dylan Stewart (Washington DC), DT Aydin Breeland (Los Angeles) and DE Colin Simmons (Dallas). Still a ton of work ahead of us, but we have a great recruiter in Jason Taylor and, even more importantly, a seasoned closer in Mario Cristobal.

- DT David Stone (IMG) also had an excellent visit. The reason I'm not including him in the first group is that I suspect his recruitment will have twists and turns. Miami is firmly in the game.

- If NSD was today, I'd expect CB Ellis Robinson (IMG) to be a Georgia Bulldog. If Miami has a good season on the field, I'd expect Robinson to sign with the Miami Hurricanes. It's that simple with him right now.

- I like Miami to land a commitment this week from TE Elija Lofton (Las Vegas). They view him as "one of the best pure football players in the country." I was told he would play a "funky role" for the Canes due to all the various things he can do. It was also pointed out that he is much more athletic than people think, as verified by testing numbers. "He can really run."

- As we've reported for several weeks, Miami absolutely loves recent commit LB Cameron Pruitt (Mobile). They view him as the ideal linebacker for modern football due to his ability to cover, run and strike. Lavonte David comparisons. He is also a sharp young man. They have him measured at 6'2.5 and a bit under 200 with a projection in the 215 range.

- DL LJ McCray (Daytona Beach, FL) is feeling very good about Miami. I expect a long battle there, though.

- RB Jerrick Gibson (IMG) enjoyed his visit and is a realistic possibility for this class. One thing to watch: Florida just lost Chauncey Bowens to Georgia and will be desperate for a replacement. We've seen Florida do some weird things when they are desperate.

- The two names to watch next week: DT Justin Scott (Chicago) and RB Kevin Riley (Tuscaloosa, AL). There is a feeling those two may be closer to the end of the process than others and Miami will push hard there. Both are extremely high on the list of priorities.

- Hard to get a read on WR Braylon Staley (Aiken, SC). He definitely liked the visit. We will know a lot more after his Tennessee visit next week.

- Miami did good work with CB Sione Laulea (JUCO). That process will take a while but we are in the game there.

- Miami likes DL TJ Lindsay (IMG) but he is another one that is harder to read.

- LB Keyshawn Flowers (Baltimore, MD) had a good visit but I'm not sure that's where we land. Miami is still extremely hot on the trail of LB James Nesta (Charlotte). They would love to match him with Pruitt and Shavers. If that goes sideways in his next couple visits, I could see Miami being patient here. There are other options which may present themselves in time.

- OT Tye Hylton (Orlando) is showing a lot of interest and Miami really likes him as a developmental tackle. They didn't push for a commitment because the expectation is he will visit Florida. Once that visit takes place, Miami will evaluate where they are at. There is still a lot of potential movement on the tackle board and I expect that picture to become clearer in the next couple weeks.

Herbieibis

Well, they have close to 40 warms on the target list so hopefully we should be able to nab 6 or 7 of these big dogs we are chasing, if not we got some big problems. Close to half of these dudes will probably verbal this summer and the rest will await Miami's fate on the field.

58 Straight

Need DT and WR yes?

If I was a recruit I could understand waiting for Miami to "Show Me" on the field this season.

Portal makes it somewhat of a different beast. When you factor that in...

DEFENSIVE TACKLE - NEW ARRIVALS
Branson Deen (5 years experience)
Thomas Gore (4 years experience)
Joshua Horton (true freshman)
Anthony Campbell (2 years experience)

WIDE RECEIVER - NEW ARRIVALS
Nathaniel Joseph (true freshman)
Robby Washington (true freshman)
Tyler Harrell (5 years experience)
Shemar Kirk (2 years experience)

Dean, Gore, and Harrell are likely one year and done, but we otherwise added 2 defensive tackles for 2023 and 3 wide receivers

Herbieibis

Tony,
Talking about high school talent.
We needed above good acquisition talent at DT, like bigger which we didn't get in the transfer portal. I like Horton and Moten but we need more of those types.

I did not remember that he played for the Canes. The Nuggets were a well oiled machine with big guys (yes I know she said she said), Jokic total class act after the winning making he sure he went and shook hands with all the Heat players. Proud of the Heat, they are a big man or two away from crossing that hurdle

I think a coaching change was needed for the baseball team. let's go

Interesting, who we get as a new baseball coach. Miami has been “held” back for many years, for many reasons.
75 years old in July, but love my Canes. Can’t wait for football, but will be ticked off if we start off bad again!
I am always unhappy that Miami never had its own stadium. To far to take the buses, etc. , when I was in school. Just takes away the feeling of having a team.
Hi to everyone. Will be back down to Florida in September.❤️🟧🟩

Bruce Brown era blogs were hot fire though, how can you forget?

For example, who can treasure such first mention gems of the best player UM has put out regardless of sport in the last decade like the one taken from here; https://canespace.typepad.com/canespace/2017/03/ums-blake-james-receives-recognition/comments/page/3/#comments

"

A performance only a Fake Lames check depositor could even possibly try to love.

Izundu, Murphy, Reed, Brown, Newton is the best five. Get the ball to Izundu on the block and...Huell, Lawrence and the recruiting blunder from down under can play zone to hide the midget as bench replacements and...

Brown needs at least another year to develop a reliable crossover pull-up jumper because he can't get to the lane against better competition unless they're missing their answer to sic on him defensively and they're forced to miss-match him dribbling the rock.

Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | March 09, 2017 at 01:54 PM"

That was literally the 2nd part of his pro career where he was used as a small ball distribution center once he traded in his first role of guard who gets downhill in the lane against most of the league attempts thrown at him to prevent that, not that I watch the NBA but from what I've been able to gather? And you (still) get this stuff for free going on two decades now between the usual gang of sock puppetry idiots . . .

2024's HOF ballot, you get to vote for 12 players and 2 coaches, so here's who should be in based on that number:

Jerome Brown, Ken Dorsey, and Darrin Smith are all worthy and should be in, Brown is decades overdue, Dorsey shouldn't wait, and Smith is underrated but belongs no doubt, that covers the available UM choices this year, supplant them with the next nine most worthy names in no particular order, Takeo Spikes, Ken Norton Jr., Brad Culpepper, Julius Peppers, Warrick Dunn, Larry Fitzgerald, Simeon Rice, Taylor Stubblefield, and Terrell Suggs.

Coaches, Some guy named Larry Coker has the highest career winning percentage, and a ring another nominee doesn't have from the 2002 Rose Bowl, so he's got to be the choice this time whether the blob likes it or not, I guess Mark Dantonio has to be the 2nd choice unless you really like Solich, which I have no problem with being the 2nd choice behind Clappy.

The actual entries who win this thing won't look anything like that though, way too narrow of a selection year range in my nods, all 80's to 2000s players.

Ohio_Cane

Elija Lofton is a 505-pound squatter, has a 320-pound clean, and benches 350-pounds. Going to be one of the strongest dudes on the offensive side of the ball the second he gets to campus. Love this pick up for Miami.

I feel like I’ve got my legs cut from underneath me. Because my strength in recruiting isn’t some slick salesman job, it’s built on the longevity of relationships. And now the way the college landscape is with the NIL, the transfer portal — everything is pretty much transactional, and relationships have kind of gone out of the window.

— Mike Locksley, quoted in The Athletic

Well, recruiting is a marathon, with peaks and valley's, happiness and sadness. One week it looks like u have a recruit locked up the next we aren't talking about him. Take Justin Scott for instance, he's been locked to us for a couple months now after the visit, we have work to do.
Warm by their names as targets means they have interest, nothing more.
I'm more concerned with the DT position than anything else. WR and CB would be next.
Mario going hard after the DLine guys, which I wonder where was this effort last cycle. Got to get at least 4 of those guys they are after.

They just brought in a BUNCH of CBs. Only one or two of these guys have to pan out.

DT and LB still a question although they added a few more quality LBs lately too. You need 4 solid DTs to make it through a game anymore it seems.

The Key word is elite. We got talent but how many can become elite. To beat the Georgia's, Bama's and OSU's of the world u have to have elite talent.

We Ain't even playing up to our Top 15 talent that we do have. We play like we have Top 65 Talent. I hear you Herb but until we play up to our potential consistently I have no confidence in us doing much better. We Got Top 15 Talent of Blue Chippers yet we going 5-7 and getting embarrassed by Middle Tennessee State at Home! What they got Top 100 Talent. There is no excuse where we shouldn't be winning 9 or 10 or 11 wins annually if we do that consistently then we should be able to procure even more Elite Talent.

Qatar's sovereign wealth fund is buying a roughly 5% stake in the parent company of the NBA's Washington Wizards, NHL's Washington Capitals and WNBA's Washington Mystics as part of a $4.05 billion deal.

Athletes are going to have to know more about geopolitics. How many basketball players have gotten in trouble by saying good things about Taiwan? Now they'll have to learn the ins and outs of the Middle East.

In NBA draft news, two twin brothers from Overtime Elite were taken with picks 4 and 5.
