University of Miami head baseball coach J.D. Arteaga announced Thursday the hiring of Laz Gutierrez as the program’s pitching and mental skills coach. Gutierrez’s hire is pending completion of a standard University background check.
“Laz is a widely-respected member of the South Florida and professional baseball community, having served as a head coach at Nova Southeastern and working with the Boston Red Sox during their three most recent World Series Championships,” Arteaga said. “As a hometown guy, he understands our storied tradition and knows what it takes to help our program get back to Omaha. We are thrilled to welcome Laz and his family back to the University of Miami baseball program and I’m looking forward to working alongside him as our new pitching and mental skills coach.”
Gutierrez returns to his alma mater after spending the past four years as the head coach at Nova Southeastern, where he helped the Sharks return to national prominence. Under Gutierrez, Nova posted an 86-63 record, highlighted by a 36-win campaign and trip to the NCAA Regional Tournament in 2022.
Despite his first two seasons as skipper of the Sharks being impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Gutierrez mentored nine All-Sunshine State Conference honorees and five All-Region designees.
Gutierrez, who graduated from Miami in 2000, returned to South Florida in 2019 after 13 years with the Boston Red Sox. Over his final five seasons with the organization, Gutierrez served as the mental skills coordinator in Boston, designing and applying leadership and mental skills routines that helped the Red Sox win three World Series Championships (2007, 2013, 2018).
Prior to his time with the big-league club, Gutierrez worked as the coordinator of player development programs and amateur scout.
Before joining the Red Sox, Gutierrez was the manager for the North Adams Steeplecats, where he led the New England Collegiate Baseball League team to a franchise-high 25 wins in 2006, following his two-year tenure as pitching coach at Barry University.
“I am very excited and honored to be back at my alma mater, “Gutierrez said. “I would like to thank J.D. and Dan Radakovich for this incredible opportunity to build on the rich tradition established by Ron Fraser and Jim Morris. I am looking forward to working with our incredible student-athletes and coaching staff.”
A Miami native, Gutierrez began his coaching career by spending three seasons as the head coach at Coral Gables High School, mentoring future Hurricanes and MLB standouts Yonder Alonso and Eddy Rodriguez.

Happy 4th of July, CANESPACERS. Have a wonderful day, but remember, the country that is responsible for our lives. ❤️💚🧡Still in Michigan, till the fall. Beautiful here, since Florida is too hot right now. Hope our Canes make us proud, this fall.

Posted by: MLALUMNI 1970 | July 04, 2023 at 02:41 PM
Predictions? Predictions?? PREDICTIONS???
I gave that up three coaches ago. Let's recap:
1. Shannon could NOT fail. Yet he did miserably.
2. Golden had the binder and the pillars. The book burned and the pillars crumbled quickly.
3. Mark Richt was the PERFECT choice. Yeah, maybe not so much.
4. Manny was the MAN. Until he was shown to be a boy trying to do a man's job.
5. Mario had the street cred but by all measures he was an epic failure and complete dissappointment in year one. Will he be able to recruit his way to success in spite of some apparent coaching shortfalls? Who the hell knows. He replaced several key coaches since last year and recruited well so far so that MAY help.
Only time will tell but anyone claiming they KNOW what will happen or making any serious logic or fact-based predictions at this point are simply throwing darts with their eyes closed only to later to see where they landed. Good luck with that!

Hey 86, I was only asking because all of you are pretty much football experts, on our Canes. At least more of an expert than I am. I do respect all of your opinions, for sure.
I will be 75 on July 16th. So, I am kind of in a hurry for our Canes.
Still love my school and love my team!💚🧡🟩🟧💚🟠 Nice and warm up here in Michigan. Not blistering hot, like south Florida. No AC when I was a freshman! Can you believe that?? Was so expensive when I went, in 1966 to 1970! But there is nothing like the Old Orange Bowl, in her heyday?? Hope you all had a nice 4th of July. We are so lucky to be born in the USA. Just look at the rest of the world. GO CANES!

Damn 5 felonies bargained down to 2 misdemeanors. It's good to be a football player in Gainesville.
They must have a special entrance and VIP holding cell.
Ex-Florida quarterback Jalen Kitna, the son of retired NFL quarterback Jon Kitna, accepted a plea deal Wednesday that dismissed five felony child pornography charges stemming from his arrest last November.
Kitna instead pleaded guilty to two counts of disorderly conduct, second-degree misdemeanors.
Eighth Judicial Circuit Judge Susan Miller-Jones placed Kitna on six months’ probation for each count but did not levy a fine or require the 20-year-old to register as a sex offender.

Soup, I wouldn't say he replaced key coaches. They had the keys but none of them fit the ignition.
His recruiting cred, is yet to be determined. Has brought in some nice pieces but a couple positions, I would give a grade C and until he brings in a complete class and not miss on certain positions, my grade is a B minus.
QB is a big concern with the back ups and this cycles addition.

CGNC It’s even hot, up here in Michigan, but not like in Florida. I think it will get worse, too. I am glad that I don’t have to play football in that heat.
I am thinking of selling my place in Satellite Beach, and just renting for the winter months. Had to pay 13K for seawall, and the November taxes are now 16K. Too rich for my money. We will see.

Northwestern University on Monday fired Pat Fitzgerald, its longtime head football coach, after an investigation found that his players had participated in widespread hazing, including forced nudity and sexualized acts.
The announcement of the firing came after The Daily Northwestern reported on Saturday that a player, who requested anonymity from the paper, accused players of punishing mainly freshmen in a sexual act that involved roughly 10 teammates restraining a younger player.

I think we'll get those.
Obviously Mario damaged the "hope quotient" by how his chosen OC performed last season. Scrapping that after one year and starting from scratch also means throwing out relationships with players that the coordinators and assistants had built up over the previous year.
Barring an early, season ending injury to Van Dyke or a series of catastrophic injuries across the team, the 2023 Miami Hurricanes should be so much improved over last season. I'm expecting a least a 10 point per game improvement on offense.
Aside from quarterback, every non special team position has been improved from a depth level. The team's average floor has been raised at almost every position, and the two positions that were the weakest last year - offensive line and linebacker have been strongly fortified.
This team is going to surprise a lot of people this year.
Posted by: TonyCane | July 16, 2023 at 10:37 AM
And as this season progresses, we'll be in the talking more and more as potential suitors for flips.
Posted by: TonyCane | July 16, 2023 at 10:38 AM
TE "U" didn't faze Caleb Odem, off to Bama.
Tony, agree. We are better across the board and there are 4 games that we need to show up and play well: UNC, only because of Drake Maye, Clemson, FSU and A&M. Some how we need to won at least 2 of those games and not get punked by some team that shouldn't be on the field with us. Truth be told, although a long shot, no reason we couldn't win them all. None of those teams are run aways in talent. It will come down to coaching and hopefully these dudes we brought on are the real deal.
Got to learn how to win the big games again.
I believe we will have to do more flipping in the fall, as the crusts aren't completely sold yet.
Got to get Patterson, Cole and at least Franklin on defense. Had 38 four and five start players warm for us but losing a few to many battles, so to me we have to show these dudes on the field. The QB room is ok but Brown really needs to RS this year. Got to keep working on the passing game. Great athlete but not a great passer yet.

BUT, I can’t find the darn thing with the autographs on it. Piss.

To each their own. I'm sure there are people who are proud members of the Medley Chamber of Commerce. My impression of Indianapolis, based on a couple of visits, is that the city is great if you love vanilla, cheese whiz and white bread. Friends who moved from South Florida and endured 10 years there referred to it as Indianoplace.
I suppose the ultimate test would be if Reggie Wayne, Edge and Bruce Brown were enchanted by the city's charms and decided to stay after their careers ended. Edge now lives in Miami. Reggie in Southwest Ranches (although he's now a receiver coach with the Colts and could easily sell his Florida home and make a permanent move back).
Perhaps Bruce will decide to retire there and live in his excellent neighborhood, drive his luxury car and enjoy lavish meals of cheese sandwiches and Pringles with a cone of Mr. Softee.

From D$ at CIS a few mins ago:
Miami is hot right now after landing commitments from WR JoJo Trader (Chaminade) and DT Artavius Jones (Blountstown). They are pushing to continue the momentum into camp:
- The name of the hour is CB Jaylen Heyward (Rockledge). Here is the absolute latest on the situation: Miami is doing their due diligence, and this will likely move fast one way or the other in the next couple days. Miami is high on Heyward and will do what's best for the University.
- I continue to really like where Miami sits with DT Kamarion Franklin (Memphis) and S Zaquan Patterson (Chaminade). I'd put us firmly in the lead for both.
- This is a general statement and not tied to any particular prospect. In the past, when a prospect leaning your way took visits, it was seen as a sign that his interest wasn't as high as hoped. These days, it can be as much about increasing value and following the advice of third-parties. Miami is in a very healthy position with multiple top prospects and has strong relationships. We also have one of the most competitive NIL programs in the country. The key is having the timing of the prospect match the timing of the school, and that is not always easy to predict. We saw that come to fruition last week with Trader and Jones.
- I've gotten a lot of questions about WR Lawayne McCoy (Central). Nothing is imminent there. We like him and would take him in a heartbeat if he wanted to flip. He hasn't decommitted yet. If he does, I believe Miami would be in a very strong position.
- OL Eddy Pierre-Louis (Tampa) is showing renewed interest in the program. Contrary to some speculation, this is not a situation where Miami is circling back after losing some centers. Pierre-Louis has always been sky-high on Miami's board and the original plan was to play him at guard next to C Joe Ionata, who committed to Alabama. Miami would love to get traction with Pierre-Louis and feel he could play either C or OG.
- Miami is in a strong place with OL Isendre Ahfua (Seattle) and I would say we are in the lead there. Miami's best selling point (similar to Maugoia last year) is the relationship between Ahfua and Miami's coaches.
- LB Chris Cole (Salem, VA) and DT Aydin Breeland (LA) continue to show a lot of interest in Miami. Of the two, I feel better with Cole, but Miami is strongly in the game with both.
- At this point, Miami's priority board is pretty well-publicized and they are not moving to backup plans. They are working these guys hard, including some committed to other schools. However, Miami continues to evaluate South Florida to determine if there are any players who should be on the priority board.
- Miami remains in a battle for DE Dylan Stewart (DC). The sense is there is a lot of action left in that one and that the Ohio State crystal balls are very premature.
- The Gators started rumors that Artavius Jones has grade problems. We have no concerns. Also, he is not 280 pounds. I was told we have him at 310. The expectation is that he and '23 signee Josh Horton will be high NFL draft picks in a couple years.
- I reported in the Bank a few months ago that some were excited about WR Robbie Washington's potential at corner. Andrew Ivins at 247 recently reported that Washington was flirting with a move. My understanding after speaking with sources is that Washington is still focused on playing offense for now. However, many people (myself included) believe he would be very wise to make that switch. He also has huge upside at WR so nobody is forcing him in either direction, but this is something to keep an eye on.
- I continue to receive rave reviews about RB Chris Wheatley-Humphrey's performance at camp. They view him as a difference-maker in a spread offense, but CB is a possibility if it falls that way. This is my personal speculation, but I wonder if the recent cold RB market in the NFL is influencing guys to consider defense.
- Miami remains in hot pursuit of the top two WRs in the nation, Jeremiah Smith (Chaminade) and Ryan Wingo (St. Louis). Smith obviously has strong relationships with former and current teammates on Miami's commit list, and Wingo has a relationship with fellow Midwesterner (and recent Miami commit) DE Marquise Lightfoot (Chicago). While Miami continues to work hard to get elite players in the boat before the season, they strongly believe there will be another recruiting season later in the year once Miami has success on the field. And they remain confident that this is a much-improved team. If Miami makes an offensive leap similar to what we saw from '19 to '20, I predict we land at least one of these guys.

LOL Yes, June, I suppose I was a bit hard on the Beaver, not to mention the town of Medley.
Check out the city video here: https://www.townofmedley.com/. It is truly a place apart. And the further apart from everywhere else, the better. Eddie Haskell could have easily grown up to that mayor.
Nonetheless, judging by the stogies Terrance smokes, he can handle far harder stuff than anything I could ever dish out
Posted by: Old Skool | July 19, 2023 at 06:36 PM
I see us getting a couple of those guys before mid August and then it will be wait and see. Results on the field will be paramount to me if we get a top 10 class.
There is no way we should be getting punked by any team on our schedule. We have enough talent to prevent that, so coaching will be the ultimate reason how the season goes. We learn how to win one big game again, those ass whooppings will be a thing of the past but got hot to win one first.

World champion Bruce Brown has to only make $22.5 million next year to be available to play in 41 home games in Indiana and go on all the road trips with, potentially the other best guard than him in UM basketball history since Rick Barry, in Wong?
He'll be fine, seems like to me.
