What’s been a busy week for the Hurricanes ended Saturday morning at a place they know well: their home field at Hard Rock Stadium.
Miami, which is continuing to make its way through training camp, gave its fans a glimpse at some of the work that’s being done on Greentree with an open scrimmage that was held at the stadium as part of the Hurricanes’ annual CanesFest fan event.
Fans in attendance had the opportunity to watch – and cheer – some big plays from the Hurricanes, including quarterback Tyler Van Dyke receiver Xavier Restrepo, running backs Mark Fletcher, Jr., and Ajay Allen along with defensive lineman Rueben Bain, Jr. and kicker Andy Borregales, among several others.
Here’s what head coach Mario Cristobal had to say after the scrimmage:
On the offense’s ability to put together multiple explosive plays:
“[The offense] got downhill in the running game, made some big plays in the passing game. Protection, we looked a little bit different up front with our size and power and just overall, really controlled the line of scrimmage and marched down, and did a nice job early, but a really nice counterpunch later by the defense.”
On the defense’s performance in the scrimmage:
“When the offense was good on first down, they were good all the way through. When the defense was good on first and second down, naturally, third down was a lot more difficult. They showed their athleticism on third down with some of the stuff they did and putting us in a tough situation.”
On the defense’s focus on creating negative plays:
“There were some times when we did and some times we were there to make a play and we didn’t make it. The biggest thing we’re emphasizing is really high, high effort, physicality, and playing smart. Being a Miami Hurricane, it’s supposed to be really, really cool to work hard, to play hard, to go max effort all the time. That’s what’s really cool. That’s swag, right? Being so confident that you played so hard that you’re not going to give in, you’re not going to give up. We have worked our way there. We’re having progress there, but we still have a long way to go.”
“Football is not a fashion show. We’ve got a lot of big, good-looking body types that are learning to play. And we have got to emphasize that. You’re not walking down a runway, right? You’ve got to put your hand in the ground. You’ve got to get to work. You’ve got to knock each other around. You’ve got to make plays, understand coverages, angles. That being said, we saw some of that happen today. Then we saw some other moments where there were lapses. This game’s very unforgiving. We’ve got to be more consistent.”
On the fans who came out to Hard Rock Stadium and were a part of Saturday’s practice:
“They’re awesome. Aren’t they awesome? We’ll see them now and get a chance to meet some of them, get some autographs signed and then we’ll go right back to the Hecht [Athletic] Center, jump on the film, correct it, go through walk-throughs tonight, get our meals, get right to bed, curfew. We’re in camp.”

Yesterday's deadline to exit fee initiate in order to leave the ACC by next year came and went, felonious sexual-assault university was so upset with the league whining over sour grapes and not winning they forgot to leave. Guess they need to stfu or return the share checks since they feel so slighted by having to play another year in the league?

Questions regarding ACC? Reasons why FSU, Clemson, UNC and NC State would vote against Cal and Stanford admission but UM would vote in favor? Does UM truly believe keeping the ACC alive is in their best interest? Is it just keeping it alive another season to build a better situation later, or do they believe that there is no chance that the SEC and B10 would want them?
Posted by: JCane | August 16, 2023 at 06:23 PM
Well, as I have said before what value is there in bringing in Cal or Stanford? SMU has even been mentioned. Adding any of those 3 doesn't strengthen the ACC one bit. It's just adding more mediocracy.
Wait around to long and you will be relegated to second class status.
That amount dough to leave will be tough to come up.
The Big Ten & the SEC will be true power conferances and for some reason they value Virginia and UNC over us. I guess you have to have a few beat down opponents.

Yet, UVa voted to try to bring them in and stabilize the conference. Too many balls in the air to figure out imo.

Hoping for a better season. On another note, Rohan Marley was on a podcase discussing why he chose football - because he didn't want his grandmother to have to pay for his college and he knew he could get a scholarship. Really great, link below

Franklin decision tomorrow, ? Auburn, Ole Miss or UM, Z. Patterson likely 22nd or 23rd, and D. Stone on 26th,? OU, Mich St, or UM. Some big names will be coming off the board, assuming one thinks verbals are final.
Posted by: JCane | August 18, 2023 at 02:13 PM
All I know is we need to get one of those DT's, either Stone or Franklin or Mario's big plans for the DL are squash for the time being. We would have to rely on big season to try and flip somebody. This position has basically been an Albatros hanging around our neck forever. At one point in time we have had trouble with LB, CB and WR but DT recruiting has been about a C minus at best and that might be kind. Well, we have a chance with Breland but he is on the left coast.

Chris Cole to verbal 9/10, and with much UGa interest and visits to USC and Tenn scheduled the 2 weekends before, I'm not feeling the Marley to UM DNA quite as strongly at the moment. Hope I'm wrong.
Agreed, Herb. Really need 1 more high level DT.

86 - I reread those Rohan articles, Aqua did a great job. I remember Rohan coming on the blog at one point as well. Cannot believe 16 years has come and gone. We were all so hopeful back then that success was right around the corner for our Canes. Not all was lost, we had fun times at games - made friends - the Canespace Family.
Don't know if you watched that podcast with Rohan and Crowder, etc., but those guys hung on his every word.

Damn Jalen Ramsey full tear on his meniscus not a “shave”. Out 4 months. I hope the Dolphins can make a statement this season. They have enough players to win the division if they stay healthy and get some good bounces!
Go Dolphins!

A couple of Hurricanes representing in this Dolphins @ Houston preseason game. Perryman with a pick of Tua on the first play from scrimmage and now Berrios with a TD for Miami.

Saw an article earlier alluding to 4 ACC presidents being Cal or Stanford alums, VT, WF and ??, along with ND A.D. being a Stanford law alum. All 5 voted in favor of admission, not surprisingly. It explains why ND pushed so hard.

Hi guys, Just checking in with you today, to get any GOOD INFORMATION on our Canes. Here in Michigan, till October, and then to Florida, for the winter. Having trouble getting around and use my cane all the time now. It’s a bitch getting old. But a good football season would help.❤️🟧🟢🟩🟩🟠🟠🧡💚

I read Stanford and SMU told the ACC they would pass on any payouts for 5 years--Cal said it would take less
Posted by: TJL | August 21, 2023 at 02:08 PM
I saw that about SMU, too, T, and there is the clearcot positive for them about making a move that potentially benefits both in the long haul. The TV markets of TX and CA could be a draw, but the expenses of travel, etc. Will be part of the discussion.
There is the question of whether any ACC dissipation has UM as maybe a higher demand in the B10 then we might have thought as an AAU school with a big city market, a southern recruiting presence and a solid brand. Hopefully UM is planning well for any situation going forward, including finding a way to win at least 8 games this year, which would be good progress and a big in season recruiting assist.
Posted by: JCane | August 21, 2023 at 06:05 PM
No reason, they couldn't win 10 games. A&M ain't all that and will be starting a kid who hasn't played much. UNC, aside from Drake Maye, has What? Yeah, I know we keep finding ways to lose to them.
Clemson is beatable but we have to play a little above our heads.
FSU had a lot of luck last year but are they really that much more talented than us?
If Van Dyke plays the way he is capable of and we stop the run, ain't no telling what this season could be. Another of if's ands & buts.
Posted by: Herbieibis | August 21, 2023 at 09:01 PM
I feel you, Herb, but I can't say I trust the potential til I see it on the field.
Posted by: JCane | August 21, 2023 at 10:58 PM
If the ACC moves west then they will need new divisions. I guess the ACC is trying to become a super conference. I suspect all super conferences will eventually have 20 teams with multiple divisions.
If FSU and Clemson jump ship and the ACC goes “dented can aisle” hunting for nerd schools then that will be the “death by 1000 cuts” scenario that I’m afraid of.
ND could easily stabilize the losses by joining but they won’t. NF is gonna do to the ACC what Texas did to the Big12. And they left anyway!

We'll quickly see if he's got the goods (he's already got the bankroll)
Freshman quarterback Jaden Rashada will start the Arizona State Sun Devils’ season opener.
Rashada, a former Florida Gators and Canes commit, competed with Notre Dame transfer Drew Pyne, returning Sun Devil quarterback Trenton Bourguet and BYU transfer Jacob Conover through spring and fall camps for the starting job.
Posted by: Old Skool | August 22, 2023 at 04:10 PM
Rashada will struggle a bit, with inconsistency.
Big weekend for us for 2 reasons, Stone & Patterson. We need both but are on the outside looking in for Stone and could be for Patterson.
Just like Simmons and Lawrence, Stones family loves Jason Taylor but the previous 2 didn't love him enough, the players that is, not the family.
When has a family memember helped our cause lately? The player wants to come here and play but the parents won't sign off on it or the parents want them to come here but they go somewhere else.
spaeking of the recruiting numbers, in order for us to get into the top 10 those numbers need to be flipped 13 three stars should be 4's and 8 four stars should be 3's. Most of your top teams have the bigger numbers in 4 stars and up.
losing both of these guys this weekend will suck.
Our nummbers look good at almost every position with some elite talent except Dept issues at saftey and need more elite talent at CB.
Dt needs more numbers because after this year there could be a mass exodus of players and the over all dept of talent will be very low. QB could use another elite talent. the rest of the positions look pretty good.

12:05 Patterson announcement, and not liking the FSU trend, with Stone announcing at 1pm. Big day, like Herb said, on 26th, but really need at least 1 of them. With Patterson having been thought to be a strong UM lean for so many mths, it would hurt to see him go FSU of all places.
Posted by: JCane | August 22, 2023 at 10:58 PM
If we miss on Patterson after missing on Kam Franlin, the alarms will start sounding. And I dont mean the hurricane sirens...
Kam visited UM 7 times in the last year. Someone failed there. Maybe the staff as a whole, maybe just Joe Salave'a.
We HAVE to win this year to get kids like that. That's the piece that's missing, and it's a MAJOR piece to recruiting

Please ... You cheat, become infamous and want it to be forgotten.
It's like OJ suing someone who said he wasn't a wonderful, loving husband.
Former USC and NFL running back Reggie Bush is reportedly filing a defamation lawsuit against the NCAA in relation to a statement the organization released about him in 2021.
According to ESPN's Kyle Bonagura, Bush plans to file the lawsuit Wednesday after an NCAA spokesperson said two years ago that he was part of a "pay-for-play arrangement" at USC.
After new name, image and likeness (NIL) rules allowed college athletes to start getting compensated in 2021, Bonagura inquired with the NCAA about whether the modifications could lead to Bush having his records reinstated and Heisman Trophy returned.
A spokesperson insisted that would not be the case, saying: "Although college athletes can now receive benefits from their names, images and likenesses through activities like endorsements and appearances, NCAA rules still do not permit pay-for-play type arrangements. The NCAA infractions process exists to promote fairness in college sports. The rules that govern fair play are voted on, agreed to and expected to be upheld by all NCAA member schools."
Bush won the Heisman in 2005, but he vacated it in 2010 after an NCAA investigation determined that he and his family received gifts from a sports agent during his time at USC.

I also wonder how hard the negative recruiting might have already picked up regarding future realignment stuff, OC. That being said, there appears to be increasing smoke about Cal, Stanford and SMU to the ACC, with major concessions by all 3 schools, especially SMU, for a lotta years. Guess we'll know more soon.

Other aspects of the conference realignments
It might not be a huge deal for Illinois football players to fly all the way out to Los Angeles for their one game a week, but it sure is for volleyball players or women’s soccer players or the swimming team. The travel budgets for non-revenue sports are already meager; expecting those teams to be able to afford constant cross-country mid-week trips is an unreasonable ask.
Rick Pitino, posted: “Doesn’t it make more sense for football to break away to separate leagues and allow the rest of the sports to compete regionally?”
