Thanks to a dominant second quarter, stingy perimeter defense and a combined 33 points from Shayeann Day-Wilson and Ja’Leah Williams, Miami women’s basketball (13-6, 3-5 ACC) upended Duke (13-7, 5-4 ACC), 64-58, on Sunday.
Day-Wilson drained five three-pointers and Williams brought down seven boards to go with 16 points as the Canes improved to 12-1 at home on the season.
“You have to trust your team and I thought there were some big shots made and we had the lead almost the entire way, so I thought we deserved it,” head coach Katie Meier said.
Ally Stedman and Day-Wilson made three-pointers, helping the Canes to an 8-2 run in the second and a 22-17 lead at the second quarter media timeout. Williams and Jasmyne Roberts countered with buckets, forcing Duke into a timeout as UM widened its lead to 26-17. Miami held Duke scoreless for over four minutes while vaulting its lead to double-digits before the end of the half. Williams kept the lead at double-digits with a trey to beat the shot clock.
Day-Wilson became the first player into double-digits with a three-pointer to start the half, bringing Miami’s lead to a game-high 13. Miami kept Duke at arms length throughout the quarter, carrying a 49-41 lead into the last frame.
Miami got a stop to start the fourth, setting the tone as Day-Wilson followed with a deep three-pointer to bring UM’s lead to 12. Duke clawed away, getting within seven until Roberts got free to sink a key three-pointer with 3:46 to go in the game. With 1:30 to go, the Blue Devils trimmed Miami’s lead to under five for the first time since midway through the second quarter. Duke got within three points with 31 seconds to go, but Miami forced the Blue Devils into a travel. UM closed it out at the line to seal the game.
“Ja’Leah wanted the ball and wanted the free throws. Duke didn’t foul at the end, which gave us a few more seconds, which really helped. I’m happy we didn’t turn the ball over,” Meier said. “We’ve been battling hard, playing great opponents and our defense was phenomenal.”
Excellent Win for Our Lady Canes! They look to be tournament bound again! Go Canes!

From the NYTimes
The N.C.A.A. is investigating the University of Tennessee’s football program for recruiting violations involving a group of outside donors, signaling an escalation of efforts to rein in the growing influence of money flooding into college sports, according to documents and people familiar with the case.
The investigation is focused on Tennessee’s high-profile donor collective, a group of alumni and wealthy boosters who support the team by channeling payments and other benefits to players. The inquiry is looking at, among other things, the group’s role in flying a high-profile recruit to campus on a private jet while the football team was wooing him, one person familiar with the case said.
Having the booster group pay for the trip by the recruit, Nico Iamaleava, now Tennessee’s starting quarterback, would be a violation of N.C.A.A. rules. The inquiry comes after the N.C.A.A. penalized Tennessee for earlier recruiting violations and signals the organization’s growing concern about the huge sums being injected into the nominally amateur world of college sports by donor collectives.

Looking like the men will need to win 3+ ACC tourney games just to get in? Might have to win it all

Sports business outlet Sportico is reporting that the FSU has been seeking private equity funding for its athletics department since 2022:
The private equity talks were internally nicknamed “Project Osceola” and they appear to center on the creation of a NewCo to house commercial rights from the school’s athletic department. That entity could then take on outside capital. This structure has become common for PE investments in sports, including Silver Lake’s backing of the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team and CVC’s financing of LaLiga, the top Spanish soccer league.
Sixth Street is still in active talks with Florida State about a possible investment, while Arctos is not, according to multiple people familiar with the negotiations. Representatives for Sixth Street and Arctos declined to comment. Representatives for JPMorgan and Florida State did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The initial discussions between JPMorgan and FSU date back to at least the summer of 2022, the documents show.

Team didn't shoot well as a group, especially when turning the ball over too many times in the first half, officials weren't going to help them across the finish line despite playing the entire fourth quarter in the bonus to overcome missing their best overall athlete on their roster.
Chokies could always catch a strong case of South Beach Friday nightlife flu, but not too likely to happen with them looking for revenge, you figure. Cleveland led the team in points last game on the road against them too . . .

Since FSU is on the warpath and wanting to leave the ACC, The Herb sees the quickest path for their exit, is by the ACC withholding their 22 thru 23 revenue. If this happens, reports say that they will take off to the big 10 and somehow play their this coming season. How the hell that happens who knows.
Personally I hope they succeed and we should follow the following season. This conference is a dam Albatros that has hung around our neck choking the life out of us. We have become up to this point the same as a majority of these schools, mediocre! We are like a seesaw. Except for Clemson these schools just don't have staying power year after year. A couple good seasons for ACC schools would be 9-3. I would take 9-3 at this point.
I know Mario is working his magic in recruiting but the fruits of his labor need to start showing results this year.
I love to be in the SEC. but that won't happen. I've looked at those schedules and they are murderous. Won't be to many teams with one or no losses.

Teddy Bridgewater will be the head coach at his alma mater, Miami Northwestern High. That's probably not good news judging from the way he ditched the U during his recruitment.

I do believe that the men play on Saturday at high noon. Hope it’s on here in Satellite Beach, FL.

Eh, that was 13 years or so ago. Different school now. Different staff. Mario will have a great relationship with him and his staff quickly.

Much Needed Win Today against Virginia Tech! Go Canes!
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | February 03, 2024 at 02:26 PM
That win yesterday was crazy. Wild lead changes. I was about to give up right before the two steals that sealed the game. Omeir was on fire in the second half and the ‘canes hit every free throw as well.
And on a side note I hate the strategy that allows a losing team to hack away at the clock in the final minute of a game. IMO there should be a 10 second runoff for fouls in the final minute of a game.
Go ‘canes!

OSU already has the #1 & 2 CB's in the class of 25. The loots rolling in Ohio. Since we need corners of the elite status I hope Mario finally opens up the checkbook for that position.

Sarasota Yeah the Game yesterday against The Hokies was crazy indeed hahahaha glad we pulled it out got a tough one tomorrow against Virginia in Charlottesville!

Looked like the South Beach Friday nightlife flu strain wasn't catching, but in the 2nd half Miami turned it up defensively and finally started to find the range from deep. Joseph played great as the microwave role off the bench again too.
Virginia is playing some of their best basketball this year right now, has won enough games in a row currently to clinch a post-season title, and will be tough to beat at home. Try and get to the line and win it there as they aren't a great overall team shooting it at the line, but Omier can't get his two first half fouls in there fast if they want to stay in the mix still for a decent conference tournament seed draw, they'll need 30+ minutes from him Monday.
